Freedom Run to breed champs NCEBA DLADLA
L
OCALLY born ultramarathon hero, George Ntshiliza, is among the big names to participate in the second annual Motherwell Freedom Run scheduled to take place from NU2 Stadium in Motherwell at the weekend. The run is supported by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for its ability to develop and nurture untapped talent from the townships, to become athletes who go out and become competitive on the national and international athletic stages. Apart from the 2011 Two-Oceans Champion, George Ntshiliza, women’s runner Ntombesintu Fuzi, will also participate. Both are defending their titles after winning this race last year. According to Mr Price Sport Athletics Club Manager Michael Mbambani, who is also the event’s organiser, they are also expecting Gladwin Mzazi (SA’s 10 000m number 3 runner), Lungile Gongqa (who holds the 10km record of 20min, 17 sec) and Cape Town’s Nkosinathi Madyo. Speaking at the press briefing at the Woolboard Exchange in Military Road yesterday (Tuesday) an upbeat Mbambani thanked especially the Nelson Mandela Bay Exec-
utive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile for supporting the initiative that is meant to keep the youth in sport and out of crime. “The event is in April, a significant month in the calendar of South African politics,” said mayor Wayile. He mentioned the names of Chris Hani, OR Tambo and Solomon Mahlangu as people to remember when launching programmes for the development of the youth. “Our mission as the municipality is not only to deliver water and lights to communities, we also have to look into the development of sport and cultural activities,” said Wayile. He mentioned soccer, rugby and netball and added that there was a need to widen the net and include more sporting codes. The mayor promised: “We’ll never betray sport and will never betray the youth.” “Whilst Mandela Bay is in a development stage, we need to appreciate initiatives that are meant to develop young people of the 21st century the true ambassadors of this nation through sport,” the mayor said, adding that this sporting event held in April – the month of Celebrating Freedom had a strategic objective that won his heart. It has an ability, he said, to integrate all races in the metro whilst at the same time attracting tourists. Athletes from schools will also participate in this event on Saturday with the 10km run starting at 7am and the 5km run at 7.15am.

Moral regeneration needed to end crime, bring back human dignity NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the community should rise up and fight against rampant crime that is tearing them apart. This according to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Councillor Rano Kaiser. Kaiser, a PR Councillor of the opposition party Cope, was speaking during the handover last week Wednesday of reflector jackets for members of the sector Crime Police Forum (CPF) at the Bethelsdorp Police Station precinct which includes Arcadia. Kaiser, who arranged the donation, said he has noticed that “the elements of crime are very diplomatic” and felt that men and women who risk their lives - without pay - in fighting against crime must be identified and honoured with dignity and integrity - for the good cause in which they sacrifice their lives. “We need to work together to fight crime, starting at home,” said Cllr. Kaiser, adding that parents, schools, all
councillors, the church, businessmen and -women have a major role to play in the restoration of human dignity through moral regeneration. Kaiser said he took it upon himself to consult big business and got assistance from a Kempston Road firm Create a Stitch which bought the bibs “for these soldiers that are fighting a just war against crime.” Lt. Colonel Nyameko Ngum thanked Kaiser for the gesture and told PE Express Indaba that crime in the area had dropped, thanks to the sterling work of the community police forum. “We have a good partnership with our community, thanks to the good relations we enjoy with the CPF. On behalf of the station’s management and the community I want to thank Cllr Kaiser for the gesture,” said Lt. Col. Ngum. “This has made the work of the CPF easy as they patrol the streets and guard schools day and night. We are very pleased,” said CPF Secretary Phumzile Mdunyelwa on behalf of the Acardia Sector 3 CPF.

New technology helps recipients of government grants RECIPIENTS of state grants will soon be able to use the latest technology to ensure their safety and to curb fraud. Adults who wish to receive their money through a commercial bank will each have a device similar to a phone with a SIM card, that works with voice recognition technology. Luzuko Qina, provincial spokesman of the Social Security Agency (Sassa), said last week that this piece of modern technology is part of the second phase of the re-registration process that starts on June 1. “The process is not a re-application for grants or checking ifbeneficiaries do qualify for the grants they are already receiving. We only want to make sure whether those receiving grants do exist. This is all part of fighting fraud,” he said. Qina also said adults’ finger-

prints will be taken and their voices will be recorded. Each beneficiary who wants to receive money via a bank, will receive a voice recognition device to use every month to activate the payment of the allowance. The fingerprints will also be compared with the information from the Department of Home Affairs and the Revenue Service (Sars) to curb fraud. According to Qina the fingerprints will also be compared to the police’s database to catch criminals. In the case of child grants, copies of children’s hands and feet will be taken. This will be done during the school holidays. Qina said there are 2.7 million beneficiaries in the Eastern Cape, of which 1.8 million are children.

Wheels all set for start of AFTER a very successful media launch on March 7 which featured world class cricketer Makhaya Ntini as the guest of honour, the ABay Wheelchair Wednesday wheels are turning furiously for its start on Wednesday, May 2. The power of wheels is often underappreciated. On a daily basis people rely on wheels – two or four – for all kinds of mobility needs, but mostly for getting from A to B. But just imagine what it is like spending every day reliant on a tool, like a wheelchair, that is completely central to one’s existence and the space and place challenges that come with it. This exercise of imagination is the motive behind the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities’ (APD’s) pioneering new fundraising and awareness initiative, dubbed ABay Wheelchair Wednesday. “APD wanted to keep the idea simple but effective,” said Brian Bezuidenhout, APD Executive Director. “So we thought, what better way to raise awareness, funds and turn the tables on traditional thinking about people with physical disabilities than to give able-bodied people some insight and perspective into our everyday lives. “How do we do this? The answer is simple. May 2012 will see company heads, chief executives, and city lead-

This practical experience will assist our leadership from the public and private sectors in gaining a deeper insight into the obstacles of persons with mobility challenges, as well as providing opportunities for practical change,” said Bezuidenhout. With over 75 000 people with disabilities living in Nelson Mandela Bay, this is a well-needed perspective, added Bezuidenhout. The APD aims to get 50 local high-flyers to come on board – ten each week. Each of these business and public sector participants will donate R5 000 to take part in ABay Wheelchair Wednesday. These donations will ultimately translate into 50 wheelchairs which will go to needy children with disabilities. Any remaining funds will go to APD’s Day Care Centre in Motherwell where they care for 29 children with various disabilities between the ages of 1 and 7 years. “One of the major factors that prohibit persons with disabilities from integrating and functioning normally within society is the issue of reasonable accommodation,” Bezuidenhout explained. “The ABay Wheelchair Wednesday initiative will challenge the mindset of the decision-makers

within society and help to bring about an unprecedented paradigm shift in the way persons with disabilities are treated.” The first organisation to pledge its support was Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, with CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile dedicating herself to performing her duties in a wheelchair each Wednesday in May. Other leaders who have followed the NMBT CEO’s example are from ABay Stationers, ACSA, The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex, Die Burger, Bay FM, Dis-Chem Pharmacies and Spar – to name but a few. Willie Bosch, Project Coordinator, advises that there are still participant chairs available and he encourages local businesses to enter. The Grand Send-Off, which will see some very prominent Nelson Mandela Bay personalities in wheelchairs, will take place on May 2 at 10am from the APD Nelson Mandela Bay offices at 55 Paterson Road. Parents’ night of hell after murder of student VERA SCHOEMAN
T
HE mother of the Rhodes student who was killed en route to her graduation on Thursday, remembers how excited her daughter was when she last saw her. Leloma Fufu (24) completed her honours degree in mathematical statistics at the end of last year and started working at the Medical Research Council in Durban on April 1. “She was so excited about her graduation and counted the hours until her moment on stage. That any man could do something so cruel to an innocent girl on the eve of her adult life, is something that I will never understand as long as I live.” These were the words of a crying Bongica Fufu from Motherwell about the murder of her daughter Leloma Fufu. On the day of her murder, Leloma had hitch-hiked from Motherwell to Grahamstown to collect her gown for the ceremony at a clothing store. Her parents would later that afternoon travel with the car to the event. According to Fufu the last time she had spoken with her daughter was at 2:55pm when she said she had obtained a lift. When they called her again a while later, someone answered the phone and they could hear music playing in the background. All their calls thereafter were in vain. “I wanted to panic, but forced myself to remain calm and continue to believe everything would be fine.” She and her husband, John, drove to the shop late afternoon to find out whether Leloma had picked up her gown. “When they told us the one with her name on was still there, I knew,” said Fufu. They were taken to the hall where their talented
daughter’s allocated chair was empty. The parents then went to the police and experienced a night of hell. “We sat up and prayed. Only a parent would understand what goes through a person’s mind on such a night.” Captain André Beetge, a police spokesman, said passers-by came across Leloma’s body at 11am in the woods behind the old Coega Hotel on Friday. She had been stabbed four times in the chest. Police suspect robbery was the motive for her murder. The deceased’s shoes, formal clothing, camera, phone and money were stolen. According to Mr. Fufu his daughter hitch-hiked regularly on weekends and holidays without any problems. The Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Zanoxolo Wayile paid a visit to the grief stricken Fufu-family on Monday afternoon to offer condolences on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the broader community of Nelson Mandela Bay. “As the Municipality we are deeply shocked and outraged by this senseless act of violence against an innocent young woman,” said Wayile. “We are further enraged by the recent spate of violent crimes that have taken place in Nelson Mandela Bay. Not too long ago we had the shooting of two on-duty Police Officers, resulting in the death of Constable Thandiswa Bambiso. Violent acts of this nature have no place in our society and should be condemned,” he said. According to Wayile the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its citizens and to this end is working closely with the
South African Police Services and other law enforcement agencies to promote law and order. “We also understand that for us to succeed against this scourge of violent crime, we need a strong partnership between civil society and law enforcement agencies. We therefore call on our communities to rally behind our efforts, acting within the law, to make sure that the objective of creating a crime-free society becomes a reality,” he said. At time of going to print no arrests have yet been made.

Top DJs mixing it up at Diamonds this weekend INDABA REPORTER This autumn, Hennessy Cognac presents Hennessy Remixed – a showcase of Hennessy mixability through a phenomenal music tour and four top DJs will be igniting crowds at Diamonds in PE on April 21. DJs SPHEtacula, Naves, Lulo Café and Cndo have been invited to headline the Hennessy Remixed Tour with performances around the country, each artist mixing his or her own unique beats alongside the signature flavours of Ginger, Apple, Soda and Tonic – a distinctive taste for every occasion. Hennessy Remixed will see the four DJs playing at six events around South Africa, kicking off with Solly’s Tavern in Cape Town, moving on to Sedibeng in Soweto, Cubana in Bloemfontein, Diamonds in PE, Max’s Lifestyle in UmLazi and finishing at Jack Budha in Pretoria. “The notion of mixing Cognac is not something new; in fact, from as early as the 16th century the product has been consumed with water. Cognac was also often the spirit of choice for cocktails during the 19th century, when discerning gentlemen wanted something of quality,” commented
Avukile Mabombo, Hennessy Cognac SA Brand Manager. “Hennessy Remixed will highlight Hennessy VS, a young, vigorous cognac with versatility that can be enjoyed neat but also lends itself to mixing with
flavours that still allow its character to stand out.” For further information on the tour, join the Facebook page at Facebook.com/HennessySA and follow on Twitter: @HennessySA.

Indaba School News Books needed to improve learners’ grasp of English language NCEBA DLADLA
A
PORT Elizabeth High School principal Mzimkhulu Qunta is on a mission to help township school-going learners improve examination results. “But this will only happen if learners improve reading,” said Qunta, who is principal of Sakhisizwe High School in KwaZakhele. Qunta said he had observed that a number of matrics fail their examinations not because they do not know the answers to the questions, but owing to the fact that they do not understand the question because they cannot understand English - the medium of instruction. Sakhisizwe High school has introduced a Library Project aimed at instilling a culture of reading in the learners of the school - something which benefits neighbouring schools as well. Named after Judy Aljoe, who sponsored the

building of the library as well as shelves and books, the running of the library is taken care of by teachers Rewallen Blaauw and Jeff Munyaka. Learners take turns to visit the library every day of the week. Qunta believes schools – as centres of learning and excellence – must have libraries to help children read. He added that those schools who don’t have libraries must collect books and put them in boxes. Teachers should then give learners books to read and ask them to summarise the books for the class - to get oral marks. “This can assist our children and improve their language literacy. The language is the medium of conveying ideas, and that is improved through reading,” said Qunta, adding that reading also broadens the mind. To achieve this Qunta has pleaded with schools and individuals with unwanted books to assist his initiative by donating books which will be used to assist poor learners in their learning of the English language and improve their results.

Khanyisile needs sponsors to take part in karate champs in Mexico NCEBA DLADLA KHANYISILE Nel is hoping to represent her country in the next World Karate Championships in Mexico in July this year, that is if she manages to raise enough money for the trip. Khanyisile of Quku Street, Motherwell in Port Elizabeth needs at least R20 000 to be able to go overseas. The 15-year old Masiphathisane High School Grade 9 learner in Motherwell, who already holds a black belt in karate, has qualified to represent the Eastern Cape in the SA games in Pretoria next month (May); but her major problem is getting sponsorship for the overseas trip. This has caused a major strain on Khanyisile’s gogo Joyce Madikane who would like to see her granddaughter realising her dream to tour overseas with her sport. South Africa went to France last year, but financial constraints prevented Khanyisile from going and gogo Joyce fears if nobody comes to their rescue this year, that was bound to happen again. “Winning in local and national games has been a norm for her. I wish she can finally get the sponsorship and go overseas this year,” said gogo Joyce, adding that she was always saddened to see Khanyisile watching her dreams disappear because her family was poor and cannot help her realise it. “Khanyisile is the bright star and a good ambassador for South Africa. She has been involved in karate for a long time and is testimony to the discipline that the sport instills in the young minds,” said sensei Mike Ndube who trains Khanyisile at Motherwell Karate Academy. According to Ndube, Khanyisile needs about R20 000 for travel, accommodation and
everything else to make the trip possible. He said he hoped a good Samaritan would come and make Khanyisile’s dream come true.

Amakhosi won the NEBFA Nozenza Koester Easter Tourney SELBY MADIKANE HISTORY was made when the New Brighton Football Association (NEBFA)’s underestimated Amakhosi FC lifted the Nozenza Koester Easter Tournament trophy following their 2-1 victory on penalties over the high-riding Bush Bucks in the final game at New Brighton Oval on 11 April. Both teams could not score goals on full-time score. Amakhosi fans were, however, ecstatic to see their side beating Bucks on the lottery 5-5 penalty shoot-out. Amakhosi knocked out Roaring Tigers 2-1 while Bucks edged out Eastern Jumpers 3-2 also in the semi-finals. The Nebfa Koester Easter Tournament’s newly crowned winners Amakhosi scooped the first prize of R6 000, 20 gold medals and a floating trophy, with Bucks collecting R3 000 plus 20 silver medals. The semi-final losers Jumpers and Tigers went home with a consolation prize of R1 000 each. Nebfa president Mxolisi Ngqok-
we hailed the clubs, fans and the match officials for their contribution towards the event’s success. “I want to say thank you, guys, for your good behaviour from the beginning to the end of this major
event. Hats off to our sponsors Dr Dyke Koester, Fain, Coca Cola, Continental Tyres and MTN. We appreciate your contribution to the development of football,” said Ngqokwe.

Mandela Bay’s two PSL games in few days NCEBA DLADLA ELITE football league lovers will be entertained when Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfits Jomo Cosmos and Maritzburg United fulfill their promise of playing their home matches against Bloemfontein Celtics and Mamelodi Sundowns at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium today (Wednesday 18th April) and Saturday 21 April respectively. Kick-off for the matches is at 7.30pm tonight and 6pm on Saturday. Both teams will be relying on their Eastern Cape fans for support as the league’s curtain is coming down to a close. It remains to be seen how much Ezenkosi (Cosmos) who are rooted at the bottom of the log want to retain their PSL status following their 1oss to league title chasing Orlando Pirates last week. A game Mjomana (Jomo Sono) has, however, assured fans that his side will do whatever it takes to avoid the chop to the lower division. Then the question is, can Celtic who are placed
9th on the log, afford to be outside the top-8? High-flying Sundowns will be hoping to keep the number one spot on the log with only four matches remaining (after playing Platinum Stars at Lucas Moripe stadium in Pretoria today) but will surely find Maritzburg United singing a different tune as the relegation-threatened Black Leopards (14th) and Santos (15th) are breathing heavily behind them. So, which ever way it goes, it’s going to be fireworks and a good value for money for the paying public.
Spectacular games hosted by ZAFA
