Media24 branches nationwide will be packing snack packs for child rape victims, and the Port Elizabeth branch of Media24 will be spoiling children from the SOS Children’s Villages, as well as two homes for the aged. Seen here are some of the 24 children from the Umcosa PreSchool in the Westville Informal Settlement, who will each receive a teddy bear and a goodie bag donated by staff from Media24’s Port Elizabeth branch, which includes PE Express Indaba. This school was founded by the SOS Children’s Villages and it also forms part of their Family Strengthening Programme, which consists of 450 participating children in the Westville and KwaDwesi PHOTO: TANYA VAN ZYL areas. Here the children show off their new and cuddly best friends. With them is the schools’ Principal, Ntombentsha Mayekiso.

Help needed for family to bury child electrocuted through illegal connections NCEBA DLADLA THE untimely death of a 10-year old girl, Phelokazi Mzwakali, of Westville Informal Settlement who was electrocuted while playing with her friends more than a week ago, has left the family and community devastated. It has shown a dire need for the community to stop using illegal electricity connections and for the local municipality to consider supplying electricity in this residential area that has quickly mushroomed in the short space of time. Residents complain that they had been pleading with the authorities to put lights in the area. After reports of increasing crime, they claim electric poles were installed but a cry for electricity to be put in their homes fell on deaf ears. While a quick solution is now being sought between senior officials of the metro municipality and the residents, PE Express Indaba has discovered that Phelokazi’s death has impacted heavily on her unemployed parents who are now faced with the impossible financial burden of having to bury their child.
“We (with wife Nohlumile, 45) are unemployed,” said Phelokazi’s father Thembelani Mzwakali (47) in whose arms the child died at Dora Nginza Hospital. He was retrenched from Ibhayi Construction Company in 2010. “We do not know what the outcome of these deliberations will be. As residents we have been talking to authorities about this bad situation - all councillors know about it. Our main concern is how we are going to bury Phelokazi,” said a sobbing Thembelani. Thembelani said they were hoping to bury Phelokazi “at home” in Tsomo in the former Transkei this Saturday if they could get the assistance. “We’d like help even though some members of my family have also promised to assist,” said Thembelani, adding that neighbours and community members, including foreigners doing business in the area, have also promised to lend a helping hand. “We have lost a good child and future leader of the community. Her untimely passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill,” said Emafini Primary School Teacher and member of the Bereavement Committee Hlumisa Marenene where Phelokazi was a Grade 4 pupil.
Grieving parents Thembelani and Nohlumile Mzawakali hold the only picture they have of Phelokazi (10) their baby girl who was electrocut ed by illegal electricity connec tions while playing with friends. Photo: NCEBA DLADLA
Dialogue sessions to inspire the youth HEILIE COMBRINCK
South Africa has a booming youth population which means millions of young vibrant minds full of dreams and expectations regarding their future. nearly 31.3% are aged younger than 15 years. Approximately 60% of the population is younger than 30 years of age! The largest age group is the 10-14 year olds. “Its nice to dream, you have to dream, but you will have to work damn hard to make your dreams come true and to be successful. The same with talent. It’s good to have, but talent alone is not enough. You have to put it to work,” said wellknown singer Zwai Bala, guest speaker and ambassador of the recently launched Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI) Youth Desk. This youth empowerment initiative will present various interactive sessions on a regular basis with the aim to motivate and inspire young minds through dialogue. Various stakeholders have come on board in support of the initiative. “Through this we want the youth to unlock their potential, to get confidence in the direction of their own dreams. They are our future lead-
ers and will have to contribute in making a positive difference in our country,” said Milisa Piko, UDDI Acting Marketing Manager. According to Bala, who hails from Uitenhage, the key to success is the same whether it be in business, art or on the soccer field. “This key is work. And the only place where you will find success prior to work is in the dictionary,” said Bala. “One also needs confidence and the youth should not miss out on that. It is one of the youth desk’s aims to install confidence through peer group dialogue in the young ones participating. Sometimes a person might not be good at whatever he or she does, but when he or she has confidence it makes a huge difference.” S S These youth empowerment sessions are open to all interested youths and will be held every second month at the NMB Science & Technology Centre in Uitenhage. Faku and Wayile must now talk, every two weeks HELGA VAN STAADEN IT’s now a question of wait and see if the fortnightly meetings between political opponents Nceba Faku, ANC-regional chairman, and Zanoxolo Wayile, executive mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, will bring reconciliation. While it was widely speculated that Derek Hanekom, chairperson of the ANC’s national disciplinary committee, was to announce a shuffle during his visit last week Friday, which would put an end to Wayile’s mayorship, this did not realise. Instead, Hanekom instructed that
Faku and Wayile must meet every two weeks to bring each other up to date on developments in the metro to relieve the tension between the ANC leadership and the municipal administration. This follows after Faku last Wednesday allegedly instructedANC councillors to boycott the special council meeting, scheduled for the next day, as they were not happy with the issues up for discussion. Faku confirmed giving this instruction, but said it was a collective decision by the ANC regional learship and not an individual one. Hanekom’s visit was a scheduled visit after the investigations into the legitimacy of the ANC regional

congress in April. Wayile said on Monday he has never lost any sleep over his position as mayor. He said he has always acted in the best interest of the ANC, the municipality and residents. “I have never treated anyone as my enemy. I am flexible and will do anything to unite the ANC. We can work together as a team. Any family has its problems but that doesn’t make you less of a family,” said Wayile. The meetings will be facilitated by Fikile Xasa, speaker in the legislature until there is more harmony between the two ANC factions. Hanekom and Faku could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Mandela Day
Help FoodBank SA to feed hungry people EVERYONE can make a difference on Nelson Mandela Day. Why not support FoodBank SA, the country’s only food banking network? Currently, a staggering 14 million people, or almost 30% of South Africans, don’t know where their next meal will come from and FoodBank SA has created a national food banking network to address this. FoodBank SA provides food support to more than 1 700 agencies which collectively benefit more than 300 000 hungry South Africans, including the aged, orphaned children, people suffering from HIV/Aids and the unemployed. FoodBank SA also provides food support to many schools and HIV clinics, building a stronger future for our country. In this way, children are encouraged to go to school as they will receive a meal as an incentive. In the same way, receiving a meal also serves as encouragement for those suffering from HIV/Aids to seek treatment at their local clinics. Here are some ways in which you can help FoodBank SA and contribute to Nel-
son Mandela Day: •Go online to www.foodbank.org.za to make a once-off donation of R6.70, R67.00 or even R670.00 to support a community, family or a child. A donation of R67 will feed a child or adult for almost a month. •Make an instant R20 donation by simply SMS-ing the word “Foodbank’” to 0 40421 (Free SMSes do not apply. Standard rates apply) and encourage 6-7 of your friends to do the same. One SMS allows FoodBank SA to feed 12 hungry people. •Go online to www.foodbank.org.za and join FoodBank’s Fill The Gap Club to make monthly or once-off donations. The main idea of Nelson Mandela International Day, or Nelson Mandela Day as it is commonly referred to, is to reach out and make a difference in another’s life. In celebrating the birthday of our most cherished national figure, Nelson Mandela, the nation is encouraged to help someone else in any way and through this set in motion a movement towards positive global change. Nelson Mandela fought for 67 years for social justice and 67 has become the numerical symbol for this day and campaign.
We want your Mandela Day photos!
Send us your photos and a brief description of what you did with your 67 minutes for Mandela Day. We would like to publish these pictures in next week’s edition and on our website. Send it to express@media24.com; post it on our facebook page (PE Express Newspaper) or submit it on our website under CONTACT US – photos.

Boardwalk refurbishes Frail Care Home NCEBA DLADLA IN celebration of former President Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday today and the 67 years of his life fighting for peace, equal rights and justice, the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World has refurbished the Gelvandale Park Frail Care Centre to the value of R200 000 on behalf of 115 elderly residents calling the place home. The casino supplied the range of kitchen equipment and painted the home which needed a new coat of paint. A group of thirty Boardwalk staff members, including General Manager Clifford Ngakane, CSI Manager Peggy Mokhatla and Public Relations and Communications Manager Caley Phillips rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty – for a good cause. The casino also donated gas stoves, two-
litre industrial microwaves, a large stainless steel splash table, various industrial-sized casserole pots, colanders, basting spoons, kettles, eating bowls and tilting pans. “The centre was coping as best it could with a kitchen in desperate need of maintenance and equipment of which some was over 30 years old. It was an impossible situation for those running the home to supply the residents with their daily meals. Given that we are celebrating Nelson Mandela’s Birthday this month, we could think of no better way to honour him than by giving back to other underprivileged and vulnerable pensioners,” said Mokhatla proudly. The centre – which is currently being run by the community and is dependent on government subsidy, donations and sponsorship from the public – was founded in 1979. Many of its residents suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and plans are underway for the construction of a special enclosed area for the safekeeping of these residents.

League brings relief for squatter camp pets THIS weekend’s heavy rains brought hardship not only for residents in squatter camps whose homes were flooded, but also for their pets. To address this great need, volunteers of the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) were out in full force in the squatter camps to help those who cannot speak for themselves. “ One cannot describe the destruction and suffering, but with the incredible support system of donations that kept coming in, we were able to make at least a small dent in the squatter camps of Missionvale on Saturday and Barcelona on Sunday,” said Linda-Louise Swain of the AACL. “We find ourselves left with many little souls who now need homes. Throughout this week, our teams will be going to the worst-hit squatter camp areas and will be distributing food, blankets and what pallets we have left,” said Linda-Louise. Some AACL volunteers returned to Missionvale on Monday as many of the shacks which they had set up with pallets and beds for animals on Saturday, were further flooded or destroyed after the worst part of the flooding hit at about 8pm on Saturday. “Many of these people have now been evacuated and we will need to offer dry evacuation homes to these animals until things are back in
place,” said Linda-Louise. “One of the dogs we found was kicked out of her home, because of her skin trouble. She waited patiently outside the gate to be let back in, but this was not to happen. We are treating her skin problem and when all healed, we will need to find her forever home,” said Linda-Louise. “In Barcelona we removed a poor dog whose ears had been cut off and whose nose had been sliced open, leaving a permanent gaping wound. We released chained dogs, got animals inside, took a number into homes, gave out food and blankets, but what we achieved is only a drop in the ocean. “We always need blankets and food, but our greatest need is for kennels. Many of these animals were terrified to go indoors, but if we could provide a safe, dry kennel for each animal, which we can raise on a pallet, this would be the ultimate,” said Linda-Louise. Besides homes for the rescued animals the AACL is in need of nails and pallets to build kennels with. The AACL has a volunteer who helps build kennels but they are looking for extra help in making the pellets into kennels. People who would like to volunteer or donate, can contact Linda Louise at 0 082 838 3988.

Volunteers empowered with childhood development training THE Community Chest, in partnership with the Airports Company South Africa, is sponsoring 12 volunteer students to be trained in early childhood development. The course is twelve months with the prospect of obtaining employment to alleviate poverty and generate income while giving good education to foundation phase learners This capacity-building programme was initiated by the Community Chest in 2003 to aid the volunteers at different day care centres in the Metro. Since then over 300 volunteers have been successfully trained in early childhood development and are now teaching Grade R in schools while some are still carrying on at day care centres empowered with more knowledge and skill.

Children taught to save whilst they still can NCEBA DLADLA STATISTICS estimate that over 70% of South Africans do not save at all while the country’s domestic savings rate was at a mere 20% in 2011. But this will however change if the Teach Children To Save Initiative has anything to do with it. The Teach Children to Save (TCTS) is a programme aimed at teaching South African children the value of money and the importance of saving and spending it wisely - the best inheritance anyone can give children. According to TCTS spokesperson Pearl Mogadima, the TCTS has in its five years in operation reached more than 350 000 Grade 4-7 learners in over 1 500 schools countrywide. This milestone will be celebrated at Isaac Booi Primary School in Zwide today (18 July). The MEC for Education, Mandla Makupu-
la, will deliver a keynote address. Asked why this important information is given to children Mogadima said: “The rationale is that the earlier children learn about the importance of saving and spending money wisely, the higher the chances that this culture will become ingrained in them.” According to Mogadima, the programme has this year attracted 16 banks and 30 financial sector institutions who participate to deliver lessons starting from basic concepts like saving, reasons to save, budgeting to save, understanding the difference between needs and wants and where to save. “The programme is integrated within the Economic Management Science (EMS) Learning Area of the school Curriculum, said Mogadima. Tips and the examples given have been carefully selected to resonate with the preteen target audience.

Oncology student Sr. Phumla Maquku loves nursing NCEBA DLADLA PHUMLA Maquku is the only nursing sister from Dora Ngiza Hospital getting training in Oncology; and she is loving it and proud. Maquku is studying towards a BTech Degree with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town. She is in the final year. “Normally cancer is treated at Provincial Hospital because there are people who are trained there so I decided to go for training so that there would be someone trained at Dora Ngiza Hospital as it now has a Paediatric Ward to treat Cancer patients,” said Sr Maquku of Kabega Park in Port Elizabeth. Maquku studied her First Year of Oncology Full-time in Cape Town and now is doing her Second Year of Management and Research at Langenhoven Oncology Centre here in Newton Park; but from time-to-time she visits Cape Town. She is also doing practical work at Dora Nginza Hospital. “I am happy with what we have achieved so far at Dora Nginza Hospital with regard to cancer treatment. But we need more resources for further management of the disease so that we’ll not have to refer patients to the Red Cross in Cape Town,” said Sr Maquku. Asked whether she loved her job Sr Maquku retorted, “Nurs-

ing profession is a calling. You’ve got to love it!” Maquku had a word for students who would like to join the nursing profession one day. She said: “Don’t join it for the money. You’ll be disappointed. You must have passion. Love people, and especially children. “Also, you must remember, it’s not only about medicine; as a nurse, you are also a social worker. Understand pain and think about the parents of your patient whom you also need to nurse - to give them assurance that their child is safe in your care.”
Lwandile M launches his gospel album NCEBA DLADLA THE gospel album “Malibongwe” is a thanks-giving by Lwandile M to the almighty God for the things He has done. So says Lwandile M about his 10track album recorded at Zonke Bonke studios in Motherwell and produced by Bonke Bunu. Lwandile Mbewu, also of Motherwell, who records as Lwandile M believes his music is inspired by God to give hope. He wrote the songs and arranged well-known hymns in his own style. “People love my music. They get healing from listening to songs like the title track ‘Malibongwe’ because I prayed before I penned each song,” said Lwandile, a believer and member of the Universal Church in NU6, Motherwell. Ti’ters Productions Managing Director Nceba Alla agreed: “We’ve been to a number of venues promoting the music and gospel fans love it.” According to Alla, Lwandile has been on Bay TV for interviews and also performed in Uitenhage and Grahamstown shows where people loved his music. “They invited us to return to Grahamstown but we’ll go there after our tour to East London and Lusikisiki in September,” said Alla proudly. “In fact we’d like the whole country to know about Lwandile M and to be blessed by his music. Yet we want to start with the Eastern Cape and especially the rural areas of this province,” said Ti’ters Production’s Marketing Manager Bonke Mpanda. Lwandile thanked his backing vocalists Sinovuyo Selekele, Andisiwe Zoneleni, Masixole Mqedazwe and

Indaba Ezemidlalo Free amateur boxing at NU9 Park NCEBA DLADLA AMATEUR Boxing development is on the rise in Port Elizabeth, thanks to the initiatives of former South African Welterweight champion Linda “Black Mamba” Nondzaba. After seeing Nondzaba’s development tournaments featuring amateur clubs in Port Elizabeth recently, Motherwell sports lover Mthetho Didi (64) who owns Good Hope Boxing Club in NU6 decided to feature his club in a tournament scheduled to take place in NU9 Park in Motherwell this Saturday (22 July). Other clubs expected to take part in the tournament are Supreme BC, Bafana BC both from Motherwell, Wells Estate BC, from Wells Estate, Fighting Stars and Young Champs Boxing Clubs both from Kamvelihle and M-Tigers BC from Chatty.
“We decided to do this tournament at a Park to attract more people to watch the kids fighting,” said Didi who is the organiser of the tournament. He said he was inspired by Nondzaba who helps keep the youth in sport and out of crime. “Sports help keep the youth occupied and out of crime. I am a great follower of boxing whilst I have been involved in the development of soccer and netball at amateur level, said Didi, adding that he was hoping to turn some of his promising amateur boxers to professional. “Mr Didi loves the sport. I am also happy to inspire people like him whose involvement will surely take boxing to greater heights. This Saturday’s tournament will surely a lay a solid ground to develop the sport,” said Nondzaba. Saturday’s tournament is free and the first bout starts at 12 noon.

Mandela Bay BSA officials licensed at the weekend NCEBA DLADLA BOXING South Africa (BSA)’s IT and Statistics Officer Skhumbuzo Motha was in the Eastern Cape this weekend to assist with issuing of licences to the registered boxing licensees. Motha was in Port Elizabeth at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre, Kwazakhele on Sunday 15 July between 9am and 10.30am and at Councillor Barns’ office in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage from 11am to 12pm to assist boxers, trainers, managers, promoters and ring officials get their licence cards. “I am very happy that a lot of our licensees came but I am worried about those who missed the date,” said Nelson Mandela Bay BSA Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. Mapitiza said he thought
those who have already paid for their licensees at the bank should keep the slip as proof of payment in order for them to be able to work as registered licensees. Without those receipts, he said, it will be difficult for them to operate as BSA licensees. According to the BSA office, Motha started in East London on Saturday and spent the whole day issuing licences. From the Eastern Cape, Motha will go to KZN, The Western Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West. Gauteng will be lucky because theirs is on-going until BSA closes the time of registration for the 2012/2013 Financial Year. “But if there are many licensees who request that Skhumbuzo (Motha) come back, such a request should be made to Mapitiza and a plan will surely be made,” said BSA’s Lilian Dewee on Monday.
