‘Who pulled the trigger?’ Security guard’s family still has no answers people dead.

EMBERS of South African Police Service (SAPS) are still busy with investigations after a security guard was killed during a shootout between police and armed robbers at United National Breweries near Markman, Port Elizabeth, on Friday, April 20 which resulted in five

We’d like to know,” said Thembani’s grandfather Saki Makubalo from his home in Hamburg, Peddie. According to Makubalo senior, Thembani had a bright future ahead of him. “His life must be accounted for.
Who killed him and why?” asked the elderly man. Thembani’s mother Thembeka (45) described her son as humble and respectful. He attended the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church in Peddie before he moved to Kamvelihle in Port Elizabeth to be closer to work, she said. At his funeral, SDA members described Thembani as a good person whose loss was felt by many. Before Thembani’s funeral SQ Risk Security Managing Director, Wessels Scheepers, told PE Express Indaba that Thembani was in their employ. He was new in the position and had worked only 11 days for them before his death. Scheepers said at that stage that he was trying
to get hold of Thembani’s family to assist with funeral arrangements. But when the family did not hear from the security firm they consulted Khula Community Development Project lawyer Petros Majola who works for the EC Provincial Children’s Rights Organisation. Majola is now acting on behalf of the family. “The Makubalos came to my office with a PE Express Indaba copy which quoted Mr Scheepers saying he wanted to assist the family with funeral arrangements. We facilitated that and the family received R5 000,” said Majola. “The family then asked whether there was to be compensation paid for someone who died in the line of duty,” said Majola. He then contact-
ed SQ Risk Security, the labour department, SAPS and later the Investigating Complaints Directorate (ICD). “SQ Risk Security said Thembani was relatively new in their employ and he did not have a provident fund at the time of his death. The Labour Department could not assist him with benefits from the Workers Compensation Fund until they obtained information on cause of death. “The SAPS has sent the matter to the ICD for investigation and an autopsy because the matter involves a police shooting,” said Majola. According to Police spokesman, Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, the Police are still investigating. The two suspects who managed to escape have also not yet been located.

This generous giving, according to KwaNobuhle police and the Victim Support Centre, was part of their integrated approach to fight a winning battle against crime in the area. “A Combined partnership between the police and the commu-
nity will enhance the values of caring and sharing as well as promoting upright and moral citizens,” said police spokesperson Lt Col. Priscilla Naidu, adding that if children are taught the values of good living at an early age, they will more than likely grow up being responsible and caring adults. Naidu reminded residents that the Victim Support Centre in KwaNobuhle is open to anyone who is a victim of abuse. According to Lt Col. Naidu, there was no need for people to suffer in isolation - from any kind of abuse - be it domestic violence or sexually related. Residents called to participate in IDP and budget talks NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality is inviting residents to take part in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget participatory sessions of which a second round will be held at Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in KwaZakhele today, June 20, from 5.30pm. All residents are encouraged to take part in this key planning and decision making process of the

Kamau a writer, teacher and mentor, who also dabbles as a graphic and visual artist, will also be the guest artist of the other Love-loud codirector and Nelson Mandela Bay poet Lelethu Mahambehlala better known as Poetic Soul in a workshop. The workshop is organised for Friday 22 June by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Languages and Literature Department in its effort to promote the use of isiXhosa as the language in Motherwell. Thursday’s show starts at 6pm. Admission at the door is R60.
THUMPING Music was played during the Youth Day Celebrations at Gondwana Cafe, Dolphins Leap in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth on Saturday. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s youth went to the Wolfson Stadium in KwaZakhele to hear Minister in the Office of the Presidency Collins Chabane speak about the significance of the day and the lessons to be learnt while the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) revealed to the young people the opportunities available to them in this new dispensation with some ending the day with a dose of fun at Gondwana Cafe. The party was called the Dance Floor Politics but there was absolutely nothing political about it; except for local deejays doing what they do best on the turntables - spinning the disks. The untouchables – DJs Mthi, Tshepho and Mills were at their best whilst featuring DJs Illu, Jesse James and Muzi who were unstoppable. “It was a day well spent. The ladies loved it and everybody had fun,” said Ryt Clik Communication’s Mthiwekhaya Gqamane otherwise known as DJ Mthi.

Government belittles plight of youth IT has been been 36 years now since the 1976 Massacre. If my memory serves me well the sole purpose of the protest was to fight Bantu Education and create better education for all. Yet 36 years later, our state of education leaves much to be desired. We have teaching taking place under trees, no learning/teaching material, inadequate teachers, unemployable/unemployed graduates! When are we going to take a bold step against this anomaly? Like our fallen heroes of 1976 did! I am tempted to say the plight of 1976 has been belittled by the behaviour of the youth of today. Drugs, sex and dropping out seem to be the order of the day, irrespective of whether they have access to education or not. And I think that I can tolerate! But for Government to belittle such a national plight, is totally unacceptable! I am still finding it very hard to comprehend that the office of the Presidency could not honour and address the National Youth
Day Celebrations held at Wolfson Stadium. What message are the President and his Deputy sending to the youth of today, to the families of the fallen heroes and to the history of our struggle in general? We are always accused of being apathetic, apolitical and uninterested in building the nation and in youth programmes/agendas. But now I think the Government should look at themselves first. Is our government, led by the President, setting an exemplary tone and pace of accelerated youth development? Nevertheless I am proud of the youth of 1976 for their selflessness has made it possible for me to be who I am now, a young Medical Doctor. The tournament is one of the highlights in the University Sport Calendar and it has proven over the years that it can rise to the occasion. The last tournament held in Port Elizabeth was held in 2005. The respective visiting teams will be bolstered by a number of national
players within their ranks, such as local athlete Reece Prinsloo who is studying at Vaal University of Technology. NMMU will have his own dose of players such as Thando Nondlwana who is the most experienced player on the field, Siwa Siphahlanga and Lwazi Mapitiza. Bernard Petersen, Manager: Mar-

ices of Sanela Vimbela who is part of the USSA student team that will be involved in a world student netball tournament over the same period. It will be up to Sandra Panesu, the captain and chairperson of NMMU Basketball club, to prove her worth,” Petersen said. The games will start at 8.30am and end at 8pm. Entry is free.
Walmer Football Tourney’s title up for grabs registration open NCEBA DLADLA REGISTRATIONS are still open for the development football tournament that takes place in Walmer Township every year, said organiser Rabi Gongqa. Set to take place at Walmer High School sports grounds from 9-12 August the tournament, which is a breeding ground for football development in Walmer/Gqebera, is open for registration,” said Gongqa. The invitation is open to all the teams even outside of Gqebera. The tournament was started by sponsors Engen, which were later joined by Absa Bank in 2002, to take the youth off the streets, to reduce crime, drug and alcohol abuse,” said Gongqa. “Thanks to the Nelson Mandela Bay businessmen and women, the strategic objectives of the tournament are still being met

This tournament attracts a lot of teams from around the Eastern Cape and even professional players are taking part in the tournament which was televised by Supersport last year. Last year it was won by Cacadu United FC, a Vodacom league outfit from Alexandria in the Cacadu District Municipality. Winners in both the senior and junior categories will take home R15 000, 20 gold medals and a trophy for a first prize; runners-up will receive R7 000 and 20 silver medals whilst third and fourth place winners will receive R1 000 each. The registration fee is R650 and it’s payable on or before Wednesday 25 July, said Gongqa. The draw date will be at Rabi’s Place on Wednesday 1 August. Nelson Mandela Bay to host SA Karate championships next week NCEBA DLADLA THE Eastern Cape chapter of the Kyokushinkai Karate Association will be hosting the 2012 South African Championships Tournament at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Vista Campus in Missionvale, Port Elizabeth from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 June. The tournament will be played under the watchful eye of the 7th Dan Shihan Kenny Uytenbogaardt. “We’re expecting more than 500 participants who will be taking part in the tournament,” said local organiser Sensei Zolile Maxam of KwaZakhele. Maxam said under-17 children and youth who perform well in this tournament will be selected to go to the Reunion Islands in September where they will compete in a tournament involving
countries like Australia and Japan. He added that the seniors or those who weigh under 70, u-80 and u-90 will be competing for selection to take part in the World Weight Category Championships in Tokyo, Japan in April 2013. According to Third Dan Maxam, who looks after three Kyokushinkai Karate Clubs in KwaNdokwenza, Zwide and Colchester, the tournament will also be used to select fighters who will represent South Africa during the Champions of Champions in Cape Town on 6 October. Sensei Maxam urged karatekas to register for the tournament and pay the fees that range from R80 to R120 depending on the category of the participant. The admission fee for spectators is R20 adults and R10 children.

There was big drama when Hotspurs were reduced to 9 men, but defender Godwin Petersen became the hero of the day when he saved crucial penalties for Hotspurs to make it 4-2 on penalties. Hotspurs and Island City gained automatic promotion to campaign in the SAFA NMB SAB League 2012/2013 season.

Young Ideas win MOFA Premier League promotions SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL Football Association (MOFA)’s newly established side, Young Ideas, were crowned as MOFA Build It First Division League champions recently.
Since their inception in 2011, Ideas has rocked the MOFA fraternity beating the so-called big teams. The man behind the success of this team, which will campaign in the MOFA–Build It topflight league, is Sobantu Madlavu. Other teams which will be promoted to
the MOFA Build It Premier League are City Rangers, NU 29 United (who are also new comers in the MOFA League) and Channel Porto. Young Destroyers,Young Swallows and Milan Stars were dropped to the MOFA Build It First Division.
