‘I would rather die than go back to Livingstone’ says mother NCEBA DLADLA
Wrestling to put Bay on TV
A VERY ill and bedridden Soweto-onSea mother says she would rather die at home than go back to the Livingstone Hospital after the treatment (or lack thereof) she received there. Pamela Maxhanti (36), a mother of a 20-year old daughter, was diagnosed with a rare disease called elephantiasis about five years ago. It is a condition in which a limb or other part of the body becomes grossly enlarged owing to obstruction of the lymphatic vessels. She was taken by ambulance to
Livingstone Hospital on January 24 after experiencing “excruciating pain” in her swollen leg. During the next two weeks she was in and out of the hospital without getting any help, according to her. Last Monday she returned to Casualty at Livingstone Hospital. “When I arrived I waited and waited with nobody assisting me, while I saw other patients waiting in the queue with me getting help,” said Maxhanti. She said a doctor (whose name is known to PE Express Indaba) told her in no uncertain terms that she was not going to get help at Livingstone hospital.
“He shouted at me telling me to go home,” she said. “At about 4pm I started crying hysterically to alert all and sundry that the hospital was treating me badly,” she said. But even then the nurse and the doctor who came to see her offered no medical assistance. They only offered her pain tablets and sent her home. “Then I saw worms coming out of my leg. It was very painful. But the staff did not care. I asked for an ambulance to take me home. Then they said I should pay R200 or else find my own way back home. “This is bad. I did not expect this
kind of treatment from a hospital; especially from a doctor. People usually claim it’s the nurses that treat patients badly. I won’t go to hospital again, I’d rather die here at home,” said a tearful Maxhanti. In reaction Provincial Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said all public hospitals are expected to render quality services to the community. “We heard about the allegations and are currently busy with investigations. After we get all the facts we’ll take appropriate action against those involved,” said Kupelo.

DA concerned about transport system HELGA VAN STAADEN THE DA is concerned that the integrated public transport system might suffer, now that project manager, Errol Heynes’s contract has expired. At a recent budget and treasury meeting, DA councillor Angelo Dashwood said he was informed that Heynes got three months’ notice. He said it was unthinkable that they would let someone with Heynes’s skill and experience go. Heynes, former acting director of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in the metro, however, put matters into per-
spective. According to him he signed a five year contract with the metro in 2007 as acting director of the local directorate for the Soccer World Cup. This contract ended on January 31 this year. The directorate dissolved after the 2010 Soccer World Cup. In October 2011, Heynes started working as temporary project manager of the integrated public transport system. He confirmed that his contract was extended for just three months and that the position will be advertised. According to him he got so caught up in the project that he overlooked
Could Sinazo Charles be the next Oprah Winfrey? NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay lass Sinazo Charles is young, beautiful and determined to succeed. This presenter of the Bay TV magazine programme “Today’s Show” which broadcasts every Monday to Friday from 6.30pm, with repeats on Sunday from 10am to 12 noon, is also ambitious - a trait that is much needed in this cut-throat show business. Speaking to PE Express Indaba recently, Sinazo, better known as Zoe, said she would like to have her own television show one day. “You are looking at the next Oprah Winfrey,” she said with much confidence. She has already interviewed celebrities such as Pieter-Dirk Uys aka his alter ego Evita Bezuindenhout and the hilarious Mark Lottering. “This week, I’ll be talking to the Eastern Cape Members of Provincial Legislature (MPL) about the State of the Province address. Born in Northcrest, Mthatha, 23 years ago, to Macebo Charles, a Civil Engineer and boss of Sakhisizwe Trust, and her mother, Nothemba, Sinazo describes herself as a “culture vulture” growing up. “I had a very busy childhood. I was
a school prefect and a Junior City Councillor. I took part in the debating society, drama and also served in the Community Outreach Programme known as Maranatha which looks after abandoned children,” said Sinazo proudly. Sinazo passed matric at Pearson High School in 2007 before attending City Varsity in Cape Town to acquire a Professional Acting for the Camera qualification. She became pregnant with the now 2-year old baby-boy Sipho and came back to study a Public Relations Diploma with Damelin College. Now in her final year, Sinazo attributes her success to the love and support of her parents. “I am grateful to my parents for the love they continue to give me. They support and trust in what I am doing. This is my love, this is what I want to do. Look at me now, you are looking at the next Oprah Winfrey,” said Sinazo.

other job opportunities, because he was trying to grasp the complexity of the transport system. “I am still untying knots,” Heynes said. He is positive that the bus rapid transport system will be up and running within three to six months. Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron confirmed that the position will be advertised. The Express reported earlier that the implementation of the integrated public transport system is being held up by litigation between the secondary taxi cooperative Laphumilanga and the Port Elizabeth and districts taxi association.

Programme to help those who could not obtain matric PE EXPRESS REPORTER
THE Northern Areas People Development Initiative (NAPDI) has launched a programme aimed at tutoring people who for various reasons didn’t complete their studies towards a Matric Certificate. The programme is open to adults who are over 21 years of age and have already passed some subjects but need a few more to get matric, or anybody that was not yet in matric but had at least passed Grade 9 or Standard 7.
The programme is aimed at people who enrolled for NATED 550 as well as unsuccessful candidates who sat for the NSC Examinations after 2008. The Department of Education first started the NATED 550 Programme in 2007. The programme is primarily aimed at adults who sat for the matric programme commonly referred to as NATED 550 before 2008. The last full-time NATED 550 matric examination took place in November 2007. Learners have written the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Examination since 2008. The Department subsequently adjusted the entry requirements to enable those who passed Grade 9 or Standard 7 or the ABET equivalent of Level 4 to enrol for the Examination [i.e. NATED 550]. Although the NATED 550 Examinations were initially going to run until April 2011, it was decided to extend them until April 2014. Mr Myron Leonard, Head of Curriculum in the Port Elizabeth District, said it was unlikely that the opportunity would be extended beyond 2014. “I therefore urge all those that must still complete a few subjects, as well as those that at least passed Grade 9, and are older than 21 years, to grab this opportunity with both hands”. He said they found that many learners just turned up for the examinations without any tutoring or preparation, resulting in a disappointingly high failure rate. According to him, learners would now be tutored by experienced educators and would be far better prepared for the examinations. Matriculants that sat for the NSC Examinations since 2008, but failed some subjects, would also now have the opportunity to be tutored in preparation for their examination in November this year. This programme is also open to those that passed their NSC Matric Examination but wish to improve their marks so they qualify for tertiary studies. The Chairman of NAPDI, Isaac Metembo, indicated that students would be charged a small fee to offset the cost of payment of tutors, learning material and administrative cost. It is envisaged that classes will run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 4pm and 7pm as well as Saturdays between 8.30am and 1pm. For more information call 0 041 409 3761.

Big aims for Junior Police Commissioner Project NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of SAPS are abuzz all over the country teaching the youth about the important role that they can play in the fight against crime. In a project called the Junior Station Commissioner the police are showcasing their profession as a career of choice and not only an afterthought when everything else has been tried and failed. “Involving the youth in the fight against lawlessness, crime and corruption is the most effective way to cut down on crime,” said GCIS Senior Communications Officer, Portia Mlisa. According to Mlisa, the incidents of residents taking the law into their own hands in the fight against crime in South Africa and Nelson Mandela Bay in recent months have prompted government to take this urgent, but necessary, action. “In the State of the Nation Ad-
dress, President Jacob Zuma mentioned the need for South Africans to work together to fight against crime as one of Government’s top five priorities,” said Mlisa New Brighton Police Station Communications Officer Warrant Officer Mzoxolo Thobani said school debates are held as part of National Junior Commissioner Project. Young people in Grades 8 to 11 debate why they should be involved in crime fighting strategies. Learners from Motherwell high schools took part in a debate at NU30 Motherwell last week. New Brighton Police Station will hold its debate on Wednesday 29 February. The learner who wins the debate is nominated as the Station Commissioner of the policing area in which their school is situated. Runners-up become the Support Services Commissioner, Visible Policing (Vispol) Commissioner, Detective Commissioner and National Divisional Commissioners. Winners, he added, proceed to the Cluster Police Station level on a provincial as well as national

level. Those who are nominated at an upper level vacate the position to be filled in by the reserve from the Police Station level. In this way, the learners will get a first hand experience of working inside the police station after school. “The only role our children know is that of police who wear a uniform and whose duty it is to arrest lawbreakers. We want them to know that there is more to policing than that. People can become scientists to work in our labs, physicians, psychologists, dieticians and ministers who work as chaplains. There also opportunities as communication officers,” said Project Manager Constable Lucille Thomas of KwaDwesi Police Station. “With this project we are laying the foundation and planting the seed for future leaders,” enthused Constable Thomas.
NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the SAPS in Uitenhage have issued a stern warning that children should never swim in a deserted pool without supervision. This follows the drowning last Thursday of 8-year old Liyema Mamkeli of KwaNobuhle township whose body was recovered by the K9 Police Unit in the water between Matanzima and Mtambanana Streets in KwaNobuhle after a search. According to Police Spokesper-
Wors King We make the difference
son Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, the deceased and two of his unnamed friends had been to the water to swim the previous day and returned home without his shoes. On this fateful Thursday he went back to the area, apparently to fetch his shoes, and he never returned home. “Police request parents and teachers to inform children not to visit, or swim alone in, deserted water pools during the hot summer days,” said Swart, adding that children must always be accompanied by an adult that can supervise them.
