Bittersweet moments for Lebo’s mom at musical tribute < Judy Peter took a photo with one of leading role players in the musical, Khanyi Mbau at the State Theatre in Tshwane. Photos: NCEBA DLADLA > Judy Peter in the middle (in front) backstage with the scriptwriter and director of Drama Queen: A Tribute to Lebo Mathosa, Sello Maake kaNcube, members of the cast and band members at State Theatre.

NCEBA DLADLA THE biological mother of the late South African diva, Lebo Mathosa, who died tragically in the prime of her life and career, was invited to the State Theatre in Pretoria last week to watch a musical about her daughter’s life. Judy Peter, of Kamvelihle in Motherwell, had an opportunity to mingle with well-known figures in the entertainment industry including Khanyi Mbau and Sindi Nene who together with four other girls play South Africa’s own Madonna in the show. “Drama Queen - A Tribute to Lebo Mathosa”, which is currently running until 9 September, is penned and directed by thespian, film actor

This is like winning an award,” said a vivacious Mbau. KaNcube said that with this production he wanted to focus on Lebo as she was on stage. “I wanted to show her creative side as a singer and dancer. Using some of her interviews and lyrics in her music I saw a three-dimensional person in Lebo and took the liberty of letting her speak from the dead,” said KaNcube. The immortalised and in-yourface Lebo speaks about everything including discovering her mother

who is from Port Elizabeth and how she wanted Judy to be part of her life. “It brought moments of happiness and sadness to me. It made me cry and laugh at the same time. I wish my daughter (Lebo) was there to see it. Finally, I am finding peace and closure at last. I want to thank Sello (Maake kaNcube). And may God richly bless him,” said Judy. Plans are afoot to have the musical tour the Eastern Cape and other parts of the country. KaNcube said there was also a possibility of a tour to the SADC region.

and director, Sello Maake KaNcube. Former SABC1 Soapie Generations heart-throb Archie Moroka KaNcube, who is currently playing Daniel Nyathi on eTV’s Scandal, invited Peter to attend the show. KaNcube said he would also have wanted to have Nomvula Mathosa, Lebo’s adopted mother, there had she still been alive. The musical tells of Lebo’s life from birth, growing up in Daveyton outside of Johannesburg, to becoming a member of the Kwaito group Boomshaka from 1994 to 1999 and her very successful solo career from 1999 until its tragic end in a car-crash on 23 October 2006. Lebo was 29 years of age, single and without a child when she died. “It’s an honour for me to play Lebo. She was my idol and mentor.

Police show good heart in women’s month celebrations NCEBA DLADLA POLICE are not only about arresting wrong-doers. They protect law-abiding citizens and also have a softer side to them which was seen in Motherwell and New Brighton in Port Elizabeth last week Thursday. The SAPS women from Motherwell Police Station led by Col. Tebogo Machaba visited the eThembeni Interim Home in the Social Development Building in Motherwell to offer love and goodies including fruit, sweets, toiletries and face-cloths. They offered a short prayer and sang with the elderly. Col. Machaba said as women, they decided to show that they love and care for humanity and especially the elderly who so need love and care at this stage of their lives. Machaba spoke about Moral Regeneration and the need for the young to love, re-

spect and honour the elderly. “These are displaced elderly people who are brought here because there is nobody in their families to look after them. The institution does not get any grant or government support. These gogos and mkhulus depend on their old-age pensions and donations. We thank you for thinking about us,” said Social Worker Nokulunga Ndabangaye. Meanwhile, women of the Swartkops Railway SAPS brought an early Christmas to the children of Bambani Pre-School in Avenue E, New Brighton as they showered them with gifts including toys and sweets. “We also had lunch with them and they enjoyed it,” said Col. Alicia Leander who led the delegation that also gave lots of love to the toddlers. “We also gave them talks on the safety issues as a lot of young people easily fall victim to the railway line nearby,” said Col. Leander, adding that plans are afoot for them to officially “adopt” the pre-school from the first week of September.

Casual Day invites public to get on board for persons with disabilities SOUTH Africa’s biggest fundraising project for persons with disabilities, Casual Day, will be held on Friday, September 7. Inspired by a naval and boating theme, the 2012 message is, “Get on Board”. Whilst the public is encouraged to dress like a captain, sailor or pirate, the implication is that wearing the R10 Casual Day sticker is the endorsement to show that one did in fact, get on board with Casual Day. Last year Casual Day showed that South Africa really is a nation of “rock stars” and more than R20 million was raised for persons with disabilities. About 400 organisations rendering

services in the field of disability, via the structures of 6 major, national beneficiaries, benefited from last year’s money raised. Casual Day is a successful initiative of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA) and beneficiaries include Epilepsy SA, DEAFSA, SA National Council for the Blind, SA Federation for Mental Health, Disabled People SA as well as the NCPPDSA. The annual Casual Day event has become a staple on the calendars of corporate South Africa, providing an easy and fun-filled way to make a positive contribution to this, one of most marginalised sectors of society.

Disabled Andisiwe wants to prove he is able ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL WHEN she found out her 6-month-old baby was disabled, the young mom was distraught, but 21 years later no one can be more proud of the young man who has become an inspiration to his fellow learners and teachers at Northern Lights Special School. Lilian Nyangasya is the proud mother behind Andisiwe (21) who is aspiring to attend university next year, despite his severe disability. “My son was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia at the age of six months, and I was shocked and wondered why this had happened to my baby. But today I am so proud of where he is in his life, and how hard he works to be successful. He brings me so much joy and makes me very happy,” said Lillian, a single mom of three. Andisiwe is currently in matric, a top academic achiever and the headboy at Northern Lights School. Not one to let his disability hold him back, he has his heart set on attending NMMU next year. For this to be realised he would need a full-time carer who can assist him with daily living and also help him around campus. Andisiwe’s class teacher, Amy Weitz, says they have faith in him that he would make a success of his studies. “Andisiwe is an excellent scholar, and all his assignments are always on time and all his schoolwork is neatly done. In addition he is always friendly and has a smile on his face, despite all the discomfort he suffers,” said Weitz. Weitz realizes that it would not be easy for Andisiwe to attend university, but she has faith that his determination and positive attitude will carry him through. “Owing to the nature of his disability, he

He is a permanent wheelchair user with no control of his arms and therefore cannot propel himself in his wheelchair or write,” explained Wendy Kops, the school’s physiotherapist who works with Andisiwe on a daily basis. He has no medical aid and has been on a waiting list for a Schantz Osteotomy - for a painful, dislocated hip - since 2008. “We certainly hope that he will get corrective surgery to enhance his seating and positioning. We are looking for any medical help and financial assistance with sponsoring him with a carer for his time at campus,” said Kops. Andisiwe wants to study either Law or Media Studies, and is hoping to receive a bursary. For more info call the school on 0 041 365 1644.

Siseko wants to share his love, expertise of the violin NCEBA DLADLA SISEKO Pame loves his violin. And, in the spirit of good will, he wants to share the skill of playing this instrument with the youth of Nelson Mandela Bay. The very talented Pame, who describes his music as a combination of Jazz, Gospel and Afropop, is also vocally gifted and is a songwriter, music producer and director. Pame, of Walmer/Gqebera in Port Elizabeth, started playing classical orchestra in 2005 after receiving classical music lessons from Richard Lento’s private institution – the TACC Youth Orchestra in Duncan Village, East London. Like most South African musicians he started singing in the church choir at the age of 13 years, and was the leader of a worship team. After passing matric at Alphandale High School in East London, Pame enrolled for an Engineering Diploma at the Eastern Cape Technikon (now part of the Walter Sisulu University of Technology) but could not finish his studies because the music bug just would not leave him. “I did some short courses in Electrical Engineering instead and went to work, because I wanted to play music more than anything,” said Pame. He now works for civil and engineering management company Mikros. Married to Umhlobo Wenene FM’s Nokubonga Pame, otherwise known as DJ Blaq, this father of a 3 month old baby
