MINISTER of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula will deliver a key-note address at the Langa Massacre Commemoration in Allanridge Civic Centre, Uitenhage today as part of Human Rights Day celebrations in the Metro. The day commemorates the events of March 21, 1985 when 20 unarmed civilians were brutally murdered and scores more seriously in-

jured by the apartheid police force. “This day is a stark reminder of where we come from as a nation. A nation with a fragile democracy. A nation that must work together for the benefit of future generations,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron. According to Baron, Nelson Mandela Bay’s senior politicians including the Executive Mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, will officiate on this day that calls on all people of the metro and country to

work together. Families of the martyrs and survivors of the massacre and all metro political parties including the leading ANC and official opposition parties and inter-faith organisations, schools and cultural bodies will take part in the events of the day which include the planting of a Tree of Remembrance and Wreath laying. “People of all races need to come together to commemorate this day. All of us must work extremely hard to unite and take the country

forward,” Baron told PE Express Indaba. Other big political roleplayers to visit the metro today include a DA delegation led by Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille, who will be marching to the Port Elizabeth SA Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) regional offices today. Other DA official who will be taking part in the march are DA National Spokesperson Mmusi Maimane, Annete Lovemore MP (DA Shadow Minister for Basic Education) and Edmund van Vu-

uren MPL (DA Provincial Spokesperson for Education). According to a statement by the DA, the march is for “underprivileged learners’ right to quality education, and against Sadtu’s policies that are jeopardising this right,” The march will start at 10.30am at Cillie High School’s Sports Grounds on the corner of Voyle Road and Sydenham Road, proceeding towards Commercial Road and Richard Road (R75), behind Shell Garage.

Promise of jobs as Dr Zuma launches Port of Ngqura NCEBA DLADLA PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has promised the Eastern Cape jobs that will turn this poor province around. Speaking at the official launch of the multi-billion rand Port of Ngqura on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth on Friday the president said the launch of the Port of Ngqura underlines government’s commitment to economic development and transformation. It is a positive step to fight against poverty, inequality and unemployment, said President Zuma. Following shortly on the official opening of the Dube Tradeport in Durban where King Shaka International airport is housed, Zuma said, “This port is a key strategic infrastructural project for our country, the continent and the world given its location and potential.” Zuma said these two key projects were launched against the back-

drop of his 2012 State of the Nation Address in which he outlined the implementation plan for infrastructural development. According to Msholozi, government has to date invested through Transnet, eight billion rand in the basic port infrastructure, creating over 15 000 jobs during construction. Government was pleased that the planning of the Ngqura Port has been integrated with the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), the president told the gathering. Currently the Coega IDZ trains 8 000 unemployed people per year and is a facilitator of scarce skills development programmes. “In the State of the Nation address, I announced the market demand strategy of Transnet, which entails an investment, over the next seven years, of three hundred billion rand in capital projects. I said that of this amount R200 billion would be allocated to rail projects and the majority of the balance, to projects in the ports,” he said.

Also present at the Port of Ngqura were from left, Sindiswa Mbambani, Siyamcela Mlangazi and Nolusindiso Ibitoye.Pho to: Nceba Dladla Transnet employee Siphiwo Lukwe is flanked by Amanda Ben Mazwi (left) and Hombisa Simanga. Photo: Nceba Dladla

Big shots at port launch NCEBA DLADLA THE Launch of the Port of Ngqura by President Jacob Zuma at the Coega IDZ in Port Elizabeth on Friday was a huge event. The launch saw the crème de la crème in leadership positions including politics and business from across the province and country visiting our shores and doing some networking. PROMOTION

Alternative to filledtocapacity universities YOUNG people who are turned away from filled-to-capacity universities, as well as those who are still undecided about a career, can still enrol for further study this year. All they need do, is consider alternative study routes, says Natalie Rabson of Boston City Campus and Business College. “It is disturbing to see the news being dominated by reports of students queuing in vain for university admission,” comments Rabson. “It shows that thousands of young people are not aware of how tertiary education works, especially where the application and registration procedures are concerned. On the bright side, however, it shows that the South African youth is firmly committed to education – which is great news.” Instead of giving up hope, Rabson recommends that prospective students take some time to research their study options carefully. “From student comments quoted in the media, it seems that many young people are under the impression that there’s only one way to get a good qualification and that is through university,” she adds. “They also seem to think that the only way to get a degree is through full-time study at a university.” In reality, prospective students are spoilt for choice when it comes to the availability of courses of study and alternative routes to get a qualification that will ultimately take them to the career or job of their dreams. Rabson debunks some of the myths pertaining to postschool education:

) “You are entitled to register at any tertiary institution and for any course of your choice despite your academic performance” – in truth you are entitled to what you have successfully worked towards, what you have previously applied for and been accepted for, and all subject to availability. You need to work hard to meet the entry requirements of a course just as you need to pass Grade 7 before you can proceed to Grade 8. That is just how it works. )“ It’s difficult and expensive to get career guidance” - this is only true if you consult a career counsellor in private practice. Most universities and colleges assist prospective students in choosing a field of study best suited to them. Boston City Campus and Business College offers a computerized career assessment and one-on-one career guidance to prospective students. Students are invited to do career research on the computer-based Career Compass programme at any of the college’s branches nationwide and then book an individual session with a trained career counsellor – all free of charge and with no obligation to register. )“ Closing dates can be ignored or changed” - not true as closing dates have to be adhered to so that education institutions can allocate classroom space, prepare study materials and so forth, much in the same way that you need to know how many friends will attend your birthday party so that you can cater adequately for them. But there are certain courses where there are no closing dates and you can register at any

time. A career guidance professional can help you identify such courses; you can also consult the Boston City Campus and Business College brochure or website to see which courses are ‘registration any time’. ) “A degree is the best qualification to have” – this is a false perception. If you’re intending to become a medical doctor you need a degree, sure enough. But if you are passionate about counselling, and want to help people with HIV/ Aids, you can for example enrol for the Boston HIV/Aids Counselling and Management course on NQF level 5. There are other similar examples, too many to mention; it’s best to consult a career counsellor. ) “You can’t enrol for further study if you got ‘bad’ results in Matric” - this is definitely not true. You may not meet the requirements for some courses but there are many courses that are open even to those who did not get the results they wanted (perhaps only have Grade 11). You can study towards nationally – and even internationally – recognised diplomas and certificates that will enable you to secure good employment and build a career. Boston City Campus & Business College offers over 80 dynamic career qualifications throughout 48 branches nationwide. Contact Boston on 0 041 363 0778, email bbcportelizabeth@bostonbc.co.za or catch up with Boston students on the Boston Facebook group\ page or Twitter.

UTE Force builds cricket field for Cowan High PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE Chevrolet UTE Force recently descended on Cowan High School in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, and with the help of a fleet of the legendary all new Chevrolet Utility bakkies, a brand-new cricket field was built for the school within five and a half days. The UTE-Force is a new initiative of Chevrolet and consists of the country’s most varied and skilled experts, from carpenters and plumbers to electricians and industrial designers. These talented and dedicated individuals are all ready to give back to the community by taking on various projects around South Africa. Tim Hendon, Brand Manager for Chevrolet, said the aim of the UTE Force is to promote the Chevrolet Utility’s capabilities, while at the same time giving back to the people of South Africa. “In coming up with the idea we wanted to show the capability of the vehicle, but we also looked to do it in a way that would benefit a community,” he said. Hendon said Cowan High School had been identified through Eastern Cape Crick-

et, owing to their strong performance as a cricketing school, despite their lack of resources. “We are leaving a sports field here. It will be fully functional. We are also training locals to take care of the facility,” said Hendon. Trevor Dolley, Cowan High School’s principal said the school was established in 1946 and currently has 1 300 learners. According to him many learners are from disadvantaged homes where parents are often unemployed and where children are raised on income from old age pensions and child care grants. Despite the disadvantages, Dolley said New Brighton is known for producing some of South Africa’s political, economic and sporting greats. “We were actually brought on board owing to our performance in terms of the cricketing abilities of our boys and our girls,” he said. The school’s cricketing successes can be traced to Cowan’s dedicated cricketing coach, Moses Maleki, who has been at the school since 2007. When Maleki started coaching cricket at Cowan, there was no proper field, no facilities and a single bag of donated kit. Fuelled by the love of the

game, Maleki persevered, growing two strong boys’ teams and a girls’ team. Some of his boys have already been called up for EP trials. Dave Emslie, CEO of Eastern Cape Cricket, who had identified Cowan High School as the beneficiary on behalf of Chevrolet, agreed. “Last year in the CSA pro 20 competition Cowan played in the regional final against Grey High School, and I was struck by the stark difference between facilities at the two schools” he said. Lonwabo “Lopsy” Tsotsobe, well-known South African and Chevrolet Warriors cricket player, who grew up in New Brighton, said the area had a good sporting culture. “I remember playing in the streets using bread crates as wickets. I think what Moses is doing here for children is more than just coaching cricket,” he said. Maleki agreed, comparing his cricket field to a classroom. “Some people see Cricket as just a game. A field is a lot like a classroom. It shows the kids how to catch and how to swing and how to get back up when you get knocked down. Those lessons one can apply anywhere,” Maleki said.

KwaZaKhele school addressing computer literacy problems NCEBA DLADLA

Sakhisizwe High School principal Mzimkhulu Qunta wants township youth to be computer liter ate in this day and age. Photo: Nceba Dladla

PASSING matric without computer literacy is a huge problem that many of the township youth will face if something is not done urgently. This according to the principal of Sakhisizwe High School, Mzimkhulu Qunta. Speaking to PE Express Indaba last week, Qunta who carries Nelson Mandela Bay’s Citizen of the Year Title because of his love for education and philanthropic work, said something should be done soon to ensure that no child gets out of the schooling system without the valuable knowledge of computer literacy. Realising this need a few years ago, Qunta started Computer Literacy classes in his school - although the school initially did not have computers; nor funds to buy them. “We went to the education department and asked that instead of auctioning their unused computers, they should let us have them and make use of them,” said Qunta. They further requested firms and private companies in the metro to give them their old and unused computers, which has resulted in a classroom being turned into a computer workshop in his school. They have now employed computer guru Jeff Munyaka to repair the old computers and teach the discipline to Sakhisizwe High School learners and those from around nearby primary schools - from Grades 3-12. “We want to urge PE Express Indaba readers to help us with their old and unused computers to assist our children never to be left behind in this highly computerised world,” pleaded Qunta.

Indaba Art & Entertainment Blaq Dee in online recording NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay artists are not only moving to the beat but also in time with modern technology by producing their music through on-line recording. One of those is Lubabalo Tobi (22) of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage. Tobi, aka Blaq Dee in music circles, has released a 16-track Online Beat-Tape titled: Beater Evolution. The music which is free to download was recorded at Entsimini in Uitenhage after a lot of fund-raising by members. It features other local Hip Hop artists like Ashanti, Tehn, Upset and Deeprizing who together sold hot-dogs at Matanzima Square, KwaNobuhle to raise funds. The group also did outdoor hip hop (cyphers) events at the square to be able to record the beat-tapes. “This is interesting music that fans will surely love. It is made up of 16 tracks that I have produced. We also have interludes,” said Blaq Dee. Blaq Dee, an IT student at Edu-varsity Campus of the Edu-College passed matric at Nkululeko High School in 2008.

Indaba Sport Themba Webb is the Prince of Netball from Motherwell NCEBA DLADLA THEMBA Webb has been appointed as the Nelson Mandela Bay Netball Team’s U-21 coach. The team will be taking part in the national netball games scheduled to take place in East London from April 26. Webb is overjoyed because he says for a man to coach a senior netball team is indeed an honour. Webb, of NU9 in Motherwell, is not new to the game and has been playing and coaching netball since 2007. He is the Valencia Netball Team coach. He also holds a Grade-C Umpiring qualification. Last year Webb received the Prince of Nelson the Year Award for Webb. being a player, coach and netball umpire. This is a rare feat in this highly competitive and entertaining game, he said.

Webb has fond memories of how his cousin brother Sonwabile Lwana, the great

coached Eastern Cape U-13 in 2005, got promoted to coach EC U-17 girls in 2006 but in 2007 Valencia Netball Team girls approached him with a coaching position. “I agreed even though I had never been part of netball before, having never participated in the game,” said Webb proudly. Webb has been winning Easter tournaments with his outfit and in 2010 received a Silver Medal for coming second in the Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral Cup. In 2009 he coached an U-19 Nelson Mandela Bay team that won a Silver Medal in Mafikeng. Local Madrid receives financial boost from Dekon Projects NCEBA DLADLA A BUILDING Contractor company Dekon Projects has given a Walmer Township football club, Real Madrid, a R28 000 shot in the arm, in what has been described as an investment in the youth and future football stars of South Africa. Real Madrid coach Rabi Gongqa appealed to Dekon Projects for sponsorship since the club cannot compete equally with other clubs because of the financial constraits which many of his young football hopefuls face

because of lack of finance. Gongqa said 99 per cent of his players come from very poor backgrounds. “Although the young players are dedicated to the sport for the love of the game, I think some may see sport as a ticket out of poverty and misery. “We have U-11, U-13 and U15 players that have to share the same jersey and boots during matches. This becomes difficult and causes inconvenience when matches are held at the same time. “But thanks to Dekon Projects, all that will be history. We’ve got enough money to buy jerseys and boots for

all our teams. We’ll register our players with the Local Football League, buy soccer balls and be able to pay referees,” an elated Gongqa said. “We are currently building a Youth Centre in Walmer/ Gqebera and when Rabi contacted us for the sponsorhip, we felt it would be for a good cause,” said Dekon Projects Branch manager Brett Wiehahn. Financial Manager Peter Mills said “We are pleased to assist the local youth in the development of football. These are the future stars of South African Football. We are pleased to have helped.”

Female boxing history made in Mandela Bay NCEBA DLADLA HISTORY was made when Bukiwe Nonina of the North West Province became the South African Female Bantamweight Champion at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton on Saturday. In the main bout of Gladys “Noforty” Tsenene’s Rainbow Boxing Promotions bill in conjunction with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and DStv’s Mbuyekezo Boxing Channel, the lanky Nonina stopped Mukondeleli Ndou of Limpopo in the seventh round to become the first official holder of the title in the history of boxing. The shorter Ndou took a lot of punishment in the second round after a reconnoitered first round. Ndou could not penetrate beyond the long hands of Nonina who fought brilliantly behind the jab. Ndou, who herself was not a bad challenger, could not answer the bell at the start of the 7th round. In the main supporting bout, local star Asanda Jacobs failed in his bid

to win the number five spot in the SA ratings when he lost to Free State’s Tello Litebe on a 6th round Technical Knock Out (TKO). In the other bouts, Mzwabantu Dabaza stopped Asandiso Mancapa (KO3); Anelisa Gungqisa beat Unathi Nelani (TKO4); Bulelani Jacobs beat Kwezi Antoni on points over 4 rounds while Rodney Smith KO’d 3 Wele Mpolongwana. It was an exciting tournament viewed by hundreds of boxing lovers including Boxing South Africa (BSA) Director of Operations Loyiso Mtya, Nelson Mandela Bay Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Portfolio Chairperson Councillor Babalwa Lobishe and other dignitaries from the Department of Sport in the Bay and Province.
