No money to use Metro’s white elephants of R16,5 million and has never been used by the community.

The Red Location Lodge in New Brighton was built at a cost of more
than R5 million and has been in use since September last year. Visitors
from as far afield as Bloemfontein have stayed at this lodge.

HREE ultra-modern multi-purpose centres with a combined value of more than R50 million which were built mainly as recreational facilities for the community are standing empty and have become white elephants as the municipality does not have the budget to operate it.
This while the Nelson Mandela Metro spends R720 000 annually to secure the buildings and protect them against vandalism. This is the information that Themba Hani, acting municipal manager, gave at last month’s council meeting in response to the DA’s written questions with regard to the utilisation of the centres. “The Centres are not in operation yet and are therefore not open for the community. As soon as there is a budget available, staff will be appointed to run them,” said Hani. Gustav Rautenbach, DA’s chief whip in the metro, said the empty centres are due to poor planning. “They are there for the poor communities, but now they cannot use them. The R50 million could have been spent in much better ways,” said Rautenbach. ) The Wells Estate Multi-purpose Centre near Motherwell was built at a cost of over R16,7 million, but has been closed since October 2010 – soon after construction work was completed. ) The Soweto-on-Sea Multi-purpose Centre in this township was sponsored by the provincial government and cost over R17,5 million. This building has also never been used. ) The third white elephant – the Govan Mbeki Multi-purpose centre near Missionvale – was built at a cost
The Wells Estate Multipurpose Centre near Motherwell has been standing empty for over a year. This R16.7 million building has not been utilised at all since its completion in October 2010. Police are hitting criminals hard where it hurts NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth members of the SA Police Service (SAPS) are squeezing the area so that criminals have no space to move. Only this weekend, 107 arrests were made for different crime incidents in the Motherwell and Kamvelihle area owing to stop and search operations and other activities that were held. Police believe that this is perhaps sending a strong message to perpetrators of crime that they are working extra hard every day to
ensure that communities are safe and free to enjoy themselves. Ten people were arrested for rape; 55 for drunk and disorderly conduct , eight for possession of dagga, nine for domestic violence, four people with outstanding warrants were arrested while four more were arrested for house-breaking and theft, three for shoplifting and two for malicious damage to property. Two people were arrested for house-breaking, another two for possession of mandrax while one was arrested for each of assault with intent to do grievous bodily
harm, house robbery, assault and house-breaking, driving under the influence of alcohol and one more for reckless and negligent driving. “Alcohol abuse remains a concern and a big contributing factor with regard to certain incidents of contact crime,” said Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, adding that they will always ensure that licensed premises comply with the law. “We want to ensure a safer community by squeezing the area for criminals not to have space to move,” said w.o. Gwavu.
PE man arrested for perjury after losing cell phone NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth man who reported a case of robbery to the police after he lost his cell phone was arrested for committing perjury (or lying to the state). The 36-year old man from Motherwell township opened a case of rob-
bery of a cellular phone. The case was opened and investigated, confirmed Motherwell Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. “Police investigations revealed that the complainant was never robbed of a cell-phone; instead the cell-phone was lost in a Jikeleza taxi. The man decided to open a case of robbery because he wanted to claim the cellphone from
his insurance,” according to w.o Gwavu. The cell-phone was apparently being used by someone else. It was traced and is now being kept by the police. “We have opened a case of perjury against the 36-year old complainant,” said Gwavu, adding that it was wrong for people to lie to the law in order to satisfy their own selfish needs.

THE opening of New Dawn Pre-School and Day Care Centre in Nelson Mandela Bay this month is set to brighten the future of young people in the metro. Joyce Mtyumza, the Director of New Dawn Pre-school Day Care Centre, which is based at No.12 Govan Mbeki Avenue, Port Elizabeth believes in the empowering of young people through education. To her, New Dawn Pre-school and Day Care Centre, a registered Non-profit Organisation (NPO) will provide children whose parents work in and around Govan Mbeki Avenue, with an ideal institution that will look well after their educational needs – while parents are at work. According to Matyumza, the management of the school have been toying with the concept of starting a school in the area for a long time, but started the ball rolling only from September last year. “We promise to give our pupils the best service,” said Matyumza. To do this they will introduce programmes of which some are aimed at helping children to study at a very young age. “We’ll also teach kids from 5-years of age how to use a computer mouse. We’ll give them information about human rights and a lot more about drug abuse. Matyumza told PE Express Indaba
Director of New Dawn PreSchool and Day Care Centre, Joyce Matyumza (left), teacher Chante Johnson and Principal Nokuzola Mabija at its opening in Govan Mbeki Avenue. Photo: NCEBA DLADLA that the programmes she made mention of were currently being taught to teachers and that she was really delighted that they as a pre-school will be teaching things that are taught to teachers.
Admissions to the school have started at R650 per month. The school starts at 7.30am until 5.30pm but parents who want to bring children 30 minutes earlier are allowed to do so, said Matyumza. Tuition is in English.

Celebration time for Tsotsobe sporting siblings
T
HE Tsotsobe siblings, one a former Women’s Rugby captain and the other a Proteas cricketer making waves, has a lot to celebrate. Rumours this week abound about the impending marriage between Nomsebenzi Tsotsobe, former South African Women’s Rugby captain, and Anthony Calata. Nomsebenzi did not want to confirm or deny it to PE Express Indaba yesterday. Needing no confirmation is the news that her younger brother, Pro-
teas pace bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe, is this week celebrating soaring 10 places up the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI rankings released on Monday to become the country’s top rated bowler. Lonwabo (27) took 11 wickets at an average of 18.81 in South Africa’s five-match limited overs series against Sri Lanka, which ended at the weekend. Lonwabo, who is ranked third among bowlers, became the country’s top-rated player with ball in hand. Lonwabo is a former Westering

Thembelani excelled at SA Chefs Academy in Cape Town NCEBA DLADLA A FOCUSSED Nelson Mandela Bay youth, Thembelani Wiseman Gunya, has qualified as a chef from the South African Chefs Academy moving closer to realising his dream of owning a restaurant one day. Thembelani (22) of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage will be recorded in the history books as the second Umzi Wethu graduate to receive a grant to study further and graduate at the famous Chefs Academy in Cape Town in December 2011. This young man passed matric in 2007, doing exceptionally well in Maths and Science. But financial constraints stopped him from pursuing a career in mechanical engineering at a college in Uitenhage and as he put it: ‘I was (also) not passionate enough about the course.” So, he
started looking for other avenues. At this time he heard about Umzi Wethu, a social investment project by the Wilderness Foundation which focuses on securing sustainable job placements in hospitality and eco-tourism establishments for resilient, motivated youth displaced by HIV/Aids. Thembelani admitted to having taken a gamble because he had only ever cooked very simple meals at home and was not very passionate about cooking or the environment. But the bug bit him, nonetheless. After graduating in 2008, Thembelani worked for Lion Roars Private Game Reserve for two years. Umzi Wethu advised him to apply for scholarship in order to further his studies in Cape Town and he was successful in his application. “Thembelani has always shown a high level of commitment to the
Umzi Wethu Programme and his work ethic has been outstanding. He excelled in his job as a commis chef at the Lion Roars game reserve which led to us nominating him for the scholarship to the SA Chefs Academy,” said Umzi Wethu Academy Manager, Paul Longe. An equally elated Thembelani had all the praise for Umzi Wethu for helping him in his studies. “I am so grateful to have had my experience at Umzi Wethu. Without it, I would not be the person I am today. Not only do they do skills training, but the life skills training really changed me. I am much more confident than I ever was, and I feel like I can make a difference in the world,” said Thembelani. He thanked his two lecturers, Paul Hartmann and Garth Stroebel whom he called his “chef heroes” that he would like to emulate.
Prospective students should not despair owing to limited places at universities PUBLIC sector universities and FET Colleges will never be able to meet the massive demand for places, but prospective students who have not been admitted to these institutions should not despair, as there are other quality options available. Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education, says that even with the significant increase in the numbers of post-school opportunities made available by the public sector, many students will not gain access to their institution of first choice, as demand far outstrips supply. According to recent reports, the University of Pretoria fielded 40 000 applications for 13 000 available places; the University of the Witwatersrand fielded 30 000 applications vying for 5 500 places, the University of KwaZulu Natal received 61 500 applications where only 9 000 places exist, and the University of the Free State received 13 000 applications for 4 000 places. Not only is there fierce competition for places for students who apply on time, but most institutions do not accept late applications, Coughlan says. This means that, for students who do better or worse than they expected to, there is very little room to move in the public sector at this stage. Coughlan says that prospective students are often not aware of the additional choices available to them beyond approaching a public university, but adds that while many opportunities exist in the private sector, it is important to ensure enrolment at an accredited institution whose degrees and qualifications are widely recognised. “In a statement released by the Minister of Higher Education and Training before the results were released, the existence of higher education opportunities in the private higher education sector was acknowledged. The Department, however, cautioned that students should check the status of the institution
at which they wish to register prior to enrolling or paying any money,” Coughlan advises. “This is sound advice, and should be extended to include cautioning students also to check the status of the actual qualification for which they wish to register, as well as the quality of the campus and service offered. “Quality assurance and accreditation of qualifications and registration of private institutions are related but not identical processes, and it is possible that a registered private higher education institution’s programmes may not all be fully accredited or registered higher education programmes,” Coughlan says. A list of registered private higher education institutions is available on the website of the department concerned, as well as the SAQA website. Furthermore, all private institutions are required to display their registration certificates in their reception areas. But Coughlan warns that students should go further than ensuring that their institution is registered and accredited. “In both the public and private sectors, students will do well to visit campuses and speak to existing students to ensure that the institution will meet their specific needs,” Coughlan says. “Private institutions generally offer smaller campuses, smaller classes and qualifications that are more focused on the world of work,” she says. “While some private institutions offer qualifications in niche areas only, others offer general academic and degree qualifications similar to public university qualifications, so it is important to understand both what you need and what is being offered.” Coughlan acknowledges that private institutions may sometimes be more expensive, but says that learners’ financial circumstances are taken into consideration and accommodated.

Local coach puts women’s football on the map SELBY MADIKANE KWAZAKHELE-born Mzwandile Knox Faas has made himself a name in the football coaching fraternity across the country. Knox is the current coach of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Eastern Cape Women’s Team. To date, Knox’s coaching skills made the province of the Eastern Cape proud. As such, the EC women’s team under Knox’s mentorship won SA games when they beat Mpumalanga Province in Polokwane in the Limpopo Province in October 2011. But before taking national honours, Knox demonstrated his coaching prowess when the women’s team of the Eastern cape whacked Gauteng Province 3-1 in the Absa National Tourna-

Knox started coaching football in the late 1980s working with school coaches in his community and the junior teams of Dynamos, his team thereafter. Knox played an instru-
mental role in introducing football to Ebongweni Primary School girls’ team and Sophakama Ladies Football Club. PE Express Indaba wanted to know his recipe for success and he said: “Dedication, discipline and determination play a huge role in one’s success. If you want to win, you must have passion and be prepared to work very hard.” It is not easy to start coaching football to girls who have never kicked a soccer ball before, Knox said, adding that “it was important for coaches to inculcate good morals and ethics in the girls and coaches should let girls be girls.” He added that he believes the involvement of soccer legends should play an important role in uplifting the standard of the ladies’ football because they (the legends) have the expertise and experience.
Bay Stars lead logstanding after flurry of goals NCEBA DLADLA AN avalanche of goals against the visiting Bush Bucks FC at the Gelvandale Stadium on Saturday ensured that the Nelson Mandela Bay Professional Soccer League (PSL) hopefuls Bay Stars FC lead the Vodacom League standing by two points. Playing their second league match in the space of a week, Bay Stars showed no sign of fatigue when they thrashed the visitors 7-0. The first goal of the match was scored by
Lutho Totwana in five minutes from time. Wade Jooste wrote his name on the score-board to make it 2-0. Farouk Abrahams scored a goal with John Giannakis coming in to score and Totwana taking his second in the match to make it 5-0. Even though the visitors showed some class and resilience in this game, the fighting spirit of the local team out-thought and out-gunned them as Giannakis came back to score two more goals that sealed it for the visiting Stars. “It was a magnificent performance
by our guys who are fresh from losing 1-0 away to Mighty Greens FC in Lady Grey,” said an overjoyed Bay Stars FC coach Graham Harrison. Harrison said he was proud of the team that responded positively to the loss midweek. The win put Bay Stars, who are hoping to win promotion to the National First Division and ultimately the elite PSL, 2 points ahead of second-placed Tornado FC. Bay Stars’ next match is against Thembu Royals FC at Mthatha Stadium this Saturday. Kick off is at 3pm.

Girls United aims very high SELBY MADIKANE THE newly established Girls United Netball Club promises their fans and supporters that they will continue where they left off last season. According to coach Sakhiwo Nogwaza, they are set to take the Motherwell club to another level. “We have already started with our training. The response is very good as
we are having two teams, i.e. under-16 and under-19. We urge ladies to come and join the club to make Motherwell proud. We want the youth to take part in sport because if they are left out doing nothing, they end-up drinking alcohol, smoking dagga and doing all sorts of wrong things,” said Nogwaza. The training sessions take place at Nyathi Street, NU 1 and interested players should contact Nogwaza at 0 084 733 5520.
