Changes at Compensation Fund lead to admin headaches PE EXPRESS REPORTER EMPLOYEES who are injured on duty and are trying to process claims with the Compensation Fund, find that they are hitting their heads against a brick wall. Recent system migration at the Compensation Fund is causing backlogs and consequently results in administrative headaches for employers, employees and healthcare service providers who struggle to get their money paid out from the Compensation Fund. The compensation for employees who have been injured on duty is legislated by the Department of Labour. The backlog of payments goes as far back as October 2011. This situation has compelled CompSol, a company specialising in
providing end-to-end injury on duty (IOD) processes, to step in and assist claimants. “As key players in the IOD industry, we welcome the fact that the Compensation Fund has decided to implement an electronic system, as literally millions of documents need to be captured each day. We also accept that any system migration has difficulties, but – as an industry – we need to put our heads together and find a way to address the current situation which is becoming unmanageable,” said Fritz Lüttich, managing director of CompSol. “Not a single medical account submitted to the Compensation Fund since October 2011 has been paid to medical service providers treating injured workers,” said Lüttich. Lüttich added that compensation payments to injured workers did commence on the new system, but
was discontinued shortly afterwards owing to a glitch in the system. “CompSol have undertaken to maintain their service standards to their medical service providers and employer clients who use their systems, thereby enabling both parties to receive payments due to them. CompSol is also in contact with the Compensation Fund to find a way for all stakeholders in the IOD industry to collaborate and overcome the current system glitches,” Lüttich said. CompSol will continue to engage the Compensation Fund and offer their expertise to reduce the pressure. “In the meantime our priority and focus will be to assist our medical service providers, employers and employee clients to ensure that they go through the claiming process as easily as possible and receive compensation timeously,” said Lüttich.
Residents must join police in a fight against drug abuse/crime NCEBA DLADLA DEPUTY Minister of Police Maggie Sotyu has urged members of the community to work together with the police to end the scourge of drug-abuse and crime. Speaking at the Gelvandale Community Hall in Port Elizabeth last Wednesday the Deputy Minister said police were human beings too and could be vulnerable to corruption and bribes but urged: “Please do not bribe my policemen and women. Let them do their job and (instead) support them in their work to clean our streets of crime and drugs.” Before coming to PE, Sotyu visited Grahamstown. The visit, she said, was meant to consult the
communities who are living in gang-infested areas and whose children are used as drug-mules and are now languishing in foreign countries’ prisons. Statistics show that Eastern Cape has a high level of drug abuse, according to Sotyu. She said the end-result of this was serious and violent crimes that drug-users and their masters commit. The Gelvandale/Helenvale area has been in the news lately for drug-dealing and gang-related shootings which puts the lives of law-abiding citizens at risk. The visit, explained Sotyu, could be seen as that of a doctor visiting the sick - in a call for a public participation in finding a remedy to change things around.
NOMAZOTSHO Mbasa Swartbooi’s musical career may have begun only in her 30s, but this Gospel songstress has a long musical career ahead of her. At the age of 35, Mbasa felt that she needed to use the talents God had given her, and put pen to paper to write some of her own songs. “I went to concerts and gospel shows to showcase my talent as a solo artist. I received a lot of positive feedback and was told that my music really did have an impact on people,” says Mbasa. “The message in my compositions is all about how you can deal with bad things that happen in life.” She will be launching her debut album in Uitenhage on April 28 at the
Uitenhage Babs Madlakane Community Hall in Kwanobuhle. This coincides with the country’s Freedom Day celebrations and the long weekend held from April 27 to April 30. Swartbooi and her band, Spirit of God, will launch her 10-track album the next day. Entitled “UJesu Uyandibiza” (Jesus is calling me), Swartbooi regards her album as a combination of relief, comfort, continuity and encouragement. “This album is meant for people to preach the word of God, to inspire those who have talent and dreams but are in hopeless situations, to let those who are in pain know that they are not alone,” says Swartbooi.

Uitenhage Gospel artist launches debut album Despite having few resources at her disposal, she has managed to compile a masterpiece. “Although I did not have a sponsor when working in this album, my husband, Thembikile Swartbooi, helped a lot in ensuring the success of this project” said Swartbooi. Written in both Xhosa and English, the album was produced by prominent mentor Siyabonga Hlekani who has worked with national artists such as Teargas and Jamali. The launch is taking place at the Uitenhage Babs Madlakane Community Hall in Kwanobuhle. Tickets can be purchased at the door for R50 and the show starts at 2pm. Grudge return fight for title
SPORT
Real City MOFA Easter Tourney champs SELBY MADIKANE
NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth’s Leon Mariba will be defending his Eastern Cape Super Middleweight championship against his nemesis Unathi Jacobs of Uitenhage over 10-rounds at the Mzamomhle Community Hall in Kirkwood this Saturday, April 28. This grudge return fight between the two pugilists will be the main bout of Sibongile Nkebe’s Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions eightbout bill which promises fireworks. Mriba stopped former Baby Champ Jacobs in their first encounter for the same title last year while the latter was on the verge of fighting for the national title. “He took what righfully belongs to me; he’s going to pay for it. I’ll be correcting the wrongs that happened when we first met,” said a confident Jacobs during Umhlobo Wenene’s Sport Programme led by Sterra Ngqezana last Saturday. But an equally confident Mriba retorted: “I beat you first, I’ll beat you again. Anytime.” In the main supporting bout, there will be a lot at stake when Xolani Mpushe of Uitenhage trades leather with Lusindiso Siyo of Port Elizabeth over six rounds in the flyweight division while Xolisa Kana will find Luvuyo Mzamo ready to rumble when they clash over 6-rounds in the bantamweight division in the main preliminary bout. The other bouts, all over four rounds, will feature: Melumzi Jantjies vs Thando Mahlahla (Flyweight); Mzuvukile Daniels vs Masonwabe Mgcuwe (Jun. Bantamweight); Lonwabo Roboshi vs Vuyani Swartbooi (Mini-flyweight); Lwandile Phillip vs Thembelani Mbebe (flyweight) and Unathi Nelani vs Ndumiso Lolwana in the Lightweight division.
ONE of Motherwell Football Association’s (MOFA) oldest clubs, Real City, rose above the rest as it won the MOFA Big Daddy’s Heineken Build It Easter Tournament against Tomorrow Stars 7-6 on penalties, after a full-time tie of 0-0 at Motherwell NU2 Stadium on April 15. Owing to heavy rainfalls that poured during the Easter weekend, the games were postponed. High-profile figures, like SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay president, Mzimkhulu Fina, SAFA EC secretary Isaac Klaas, Motherwell Build It owner, Sibongile Nkebe, WAFA president, Hombile Hempe and Hip-hop artist, Azz Veritazz, were in attendance. In the semi-finals, Tomorrow Stars overcame Real Strikers 2-0, while Real City won on penalties 6-5 over Crystal Palace after a goalless full-time score. In the finals no side could break the ice during the full-time and the game had to be decided on the 5-5 penalty shoot-out, with Real City beating Tomorrow Stars 7-6 in the sudden death. City took home R15 000, a floating trophy and 25 gold medals, while Stars were presented with the consolation prize of R10 000 and 25 silver medals. The losing semi-finalists pocketed R2 500 each.
