GOOD news for Eastern Cape football lovers is that they can look forward to two elite Professional Soccer League (PSL) matches in the next week at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Orlando Pirates will take on Jomo Cosmos on Sunday (October 30), while Amakhosi and Maritzburg United will play against each other on November 1. “These are the first of six PSL matches lined up for Nelson Mandela Bay stadium to ensure that local football lovers are entertained up to April 2012,” said Access Management Marketing Manager Buli Ngomane. Speaking to PE Express Indaba last Friday, Ngomane, better known as Buli G, said this was part of a bigger plan to have a PSL team coming to have its base here in Mandela Bay. “Together with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality we (the stadium management) have noted that there are teams in the PSL who are struggling to find grounds for their home matches. We then thought, opening up for these teams would be a good business decision and cost-effective in the maintenance of the stadium, so we invited Jomo Cosmos and Maritzburg United to come here and test the grounds,” said Ngomane. “With these top PSL matches played in the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium we want to dispel the myth that we are only rugby crazy people. We love our soccer and this stadium is available to host any event that the people want,” said Ngomane. Kick-off for Sunday’s match is at 3 pm and the tickets are available at R40 each at Computicket and selected outlets in and around Nelson Mandela Bay.

Alcohol blamed for Motherwell spate of crime NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth have made 83 arrests during a crime prevention operation at the weekend. A total 66 cases of the arrests in the operation, that started on Friday until Sunday evening, were alcohol related, said police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge on Monday. “We arrested 64 people for be-
ing drunk and disorderly and two for driving under the influence of alcohol,” said Captain Beetge. They confiscated a 9mm pistol, a plastic toy gun, two cell phones, three bompies of dagga and 17 knives during the swoop. “We have noted that alcohol plays a large role in the committing of crime and thus we say these arrests should serve as warning to alcohol abusers – both victims and perpetrators – that the SAPS in Motherwell has a zero tolerance for crimes committed where alcohol has been involved or abused,” said Beetge.

Boardwalk construction full speed ahead WITH construction at the Boardwalk now well underway, contractors have released some facts and figures that put the scale and size of the project into perspective. In the initial excavation phase, more than 115 000 m³ of earth and rock were removed, enough to fill almost 60 Olympic swimming pools. Then 1 424 soil nails and 27 ground anchors were used to secure the excavation sidewalls, while nearly 10 000 m² of waterproofing – enough to cover a
rugby field – were laid to ensure the new structures stay dry. More than 32 000 m³ of concrete – enough to fill 60 standard domestic swimming pools – together with more than 5 200 tons of reinforcement and 158 tons of structural steel will be used in the basic structures, with 1 852 columns providing support. In addition more than 37 000 m² of brickwork, enough to cover over three rugby fields, will be used to enclose the structures, and most of that will be hidden behind some 80 000 m² of
internal and external plaster, which could provide a rather hard surface for a further eight rugby fields. Once the structures are complete, they will be covered by 4 600 m² of roof covering, enough to enclose almost six tennis courts, while the public areas in the different storeys of the new buildings will require more than 35 000 m² of ceilings – enough to cover almost 44 tennis courts. When all of that is complete, the walls in the public areas will be covered by 10 000 m² of wall-
paper and 3 000 m² of shiplap timber cladding, while the floors will be covered by 15 000 m² of tiling, and 14 500 m² of plush carpeting, enough to cover 14 rugby fields. More than 10 000 new and replacement lights will be fitted to the new buildings, and seven lifts and eight escalators will provide quick and easy access. Although some areas will be opened to the public over the next few months, the target date for the completion of the entire Boardwalk project is set for December 2012.

Domestic violence awareness programme in Motherwell NCEBA DLADLA A high incidence of domestic violence has been reported in the area known as Kamvelihle near Motherwell in Port Elizabeth in the last few months. To curb this scourge that is causing so much pain and breaking down family units a campaign has been organised by the National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (NICRO) at ePalini near the clinic in Kamvelihle tomorrow (Thursday 27 October). Nicro is working in conjunction with the SA Police Service (SAPS), Women against Women Abuse (WAWA), FAMSA and Amadoda Okwenene, from KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage, to help local communities to know about the dangers of domestic violence. “There has been a high incidence of domestic violence in the Kamvelihle and Motherwell area and the main problem is that both the victims and perpetrators do not know about it, said Bekeka Siyephu of Nicro. Siyephu (21) is a BA Honours Social Work student at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University who works for Nicro at the Motherwell Magistrates Court in the Diversion Programme. She has been surprised by people’s lack of knowledge about this problem which is gradually tearing them apart. “Domestic violence comes in many forms; like sexual

Siyephu mentioned as examples of financial and emotional abuse, a woman keeping her husband’s salary to herself and abusing it while the husband struggles; and the man who shouts and calls his wife derogatory names. “Domestic violence is a huge problem, agreed Motherwell SAPS spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge. “A number of assault as well as

Beetge said he believes every attempt should be made to create community awareness of this problem and its relations to alcohol abuse, and that they (SAPS) will continue to give talks to the residents to cut down on alcohol and drug abuse as these are the causes of most of the crimes committed in Motherwell.

Young adults trained in workplace skills NCEBA DLADLA ELEVEN young adults completed the inaugural Umzi Wethu Livelihoods Programme at the beginning of October. The programme is one of the Wilderness Foundation’s social intervention projects aimed at the youth of the Eastern Cape and will benefit up to 300 job seekers per year. “The Umzi Wethu Livelihoods Programme aims to equip job seekers with the skills required to find work and to become valuable employees,” said facilitator, Heinrich Terblanche. “The programme combines an established job readiness training programme (Work 4A Living) together with a comprehensive life skills programme.” The Programme targets job seekers between the ages of 18 and 35 and consists of 20 workshops presented over a five-week period. It caters for individual job seekers who make contact with the programme through their own job search efforts as well as through Umzi Wethu partner organizations that are already working with youth in the Province. “Job readiness and life skills are the two major components of the programme,” said Ter-
blanche. Through these components, they aim to empower young job seekers and ensure that they are better prepared to enter the world of work. “We give them training on how to take responsibility for their own physical health and wellness, and we also teach them about environmental issues and their personal impact on the environment.” Instead of simply migrating from job to job, students are taught how to conduct professional job interviews, build up a skills portfolio, grow and develop in their jobs by working to a standard of excellence and having a good work ethic. Entrepreneurship is also addressed in the training. According to programme graduate, Zikhona Yona (22), the programme has helped her build confidence when it comes to job interviews. “I know how to be professional in an interview now. I am looking forward to applying for jobs because I feel more informed through this programme.” Nonkululeko Mbalo (24) agrees. “Now I don’t have to be afraid when I go for an interview. I know that I must be confident, and smile because I can offer valuable skills to my employer . . . ” The next Umzi Wethu Livelihoods Programme starts today. For more info phone Heinrich or Lulu on 0 041 374 0746.

Free tickets for Freshlyground in Mandela Bay NCEBA DLADLA MULTI Award-winning Afro-fusion group Freshly Ground will be visiting Nelson Mandela Bay next month as part of its 10th anniversary. Courtesy of Nedbank, their primary sponsor, the sevenmember group will present free concerts around the country starting in Umlazi Cinema hall in Durban from November 2 to December 3 in the Sun City Superbowl in Johannesburg. This is all in celebration of what has become an interesting decade in the South African music landscape since the
band, made up of members from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa including the New Brighton, Port Elizabethborn Zolani Mahola, was formed in Cape Town in 2002. “The concerts, which will combine captivating story-telling with vibrant music from the group will form part of the ‘old school’ Freshlyground 10 years Birthday South African Love to Hate Tour,” said Nedbank Communications Manager Soneni Phiri. According to Phiri, Nedbank will make between 500 and 2000 tickets available for each concert. These will benefit the bank’s existing members as well as people who participate in its community based promo-
tional activities as part of its commitment to community involvement. “Freshlyground has been one of South Africa’s most successful and most loved groups over the past decade and we are very pleased to be partnering them and sponsoring these community concerts to celebrate their ten years together,” said Nedbank’s Managing Executive Consumer Banking, Ciko Thomas. “Freshlyground is certainly the epitome of how each of us makes things happen through hard work and commitment,” said Thomas, adding that working with the group was Nedbank’s idea of keeping their commitment to the develop-
ment of arts and culture in South Africa through the Nedbank Arts and Culture Trust since 1994. Freshlyground has won an MTV Europe award and eight South African Music Awards (SAMAs) including; Album of the Year, Ma Cheri, May 2008, Best Duo/Group also for Macheri, May 2008 and Best Adult Contemporary English Album for Radio Africa, May 2011. In 2010 they were selected to perform the official 2010 Fifa World Cup song alongside multi platinum-selling artiste Shakira - in the process gaining much deserved international acclaim. People can also listen to Inkqubela FM for more details.

Kwaru triumphs in women’s rugby tourney A PORT ELIZABETH women’s rugby football club (RFC) Kwaru won the Women’s Rugby Tournament held at the Langa Stadium in Cape Town last week. Kwaru, of Kwazakhele township, thrashed Maties Women’s RFC of Stellenbosch 37-13 in a match that provided fans with fireworks. The Port Elizabeth side gave the home team a tough time as it became clear from the outset that Kwaru did not go to Cape Town for anything less than a win. According to Msutu Kewana, Managing Director of Women’s Rugby in Cape Town, this annual tournament is aimed at giving women an opportunity to show their mettle in rugby. Kewana indicated that the Western Cape Province was determined to put women’s rugby de-
velopment in the forefront. “As a home team, we were hoping to take up the challenge and bring the trophy home, but the visitors proved to be better. I am proud of my players’ performance so far,” said Maties RFC Manager, Margaret Smith. Meanwhile, Kwaru coach Xola Jacobs who was happy with his players’ overall performance said he told them to surge on as victory was guaranteed. “Of course we had a better selection of players who are determined and are able to stick to the rules of the game and follow instructions,” said a proud Jacobs after lifting the trophy with R10 000 prize money, medals and certificates for becoming the winners of the tournament.

Tiltmann said the station had played a part in this 200-member team’s success by donating balls
and soccer kit in partnership with Puma earlier this year. Since its inception in 1998 to unearth and develop football among youth from different backgrounds, St George’s FC has grown from strength to strength, said the club’s Chairman John Oddy. According to Oddy the club was a thorn in the flesh for the other clubs in the Port Elizabeth Football Association (PEFA) League where it currently plays. Oddy was hoping that his team would qualify to play at the highest level in football in the not too distant future. St George’s Colts won the Social section of the competition while Swallows took home the Youth section.
The Champions are, front row from left, Julius Ongweche, Thulani Sipango, Nkosi nathi Ndamane, Anele Madikane and Thembelani Tshisa. In the middle is Zolisi sizwe Nhele (goal keeper). But GB, as Golden Brothers are affectionately known by their supporters started to make

NMB Boxing Veterans association launched NCEBA DLADLA THE days of talking are over; now it is the time for action. This was the commitment given by the Nelson Mandela Bay Boxing Veterans Association during the launch of their structure at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth last Saturday. Sport and Recreation Portfolio Committee member Councillor Xola Sabani, who delivered a keynote address on behalf of the municipality, welcomed the veterans for their decision to come and plough back into the sport and promised that council will support their endeavours. “Sport and youth development is one of the key performance areas that Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality focuses on,” said Cllr. Sabani. Sabani further urged the former great fighters to work together with other interest groups in the sport and not in silos because government is encouraging unity in diversity. “We won’t entertain anyone who’ll come and say they represent the boxers association - we recognise your office, but it is your duty to ensure that everybody is on board. remember, you are not
representing Port Elizabeth but the metro, and that includes Despatch, Uitenhage and surrounding areas,” Cllr. Sabani said. Chairperson Ace Makaluza committed his committee and members of the association to develop the sport and bring back the discipline boxing is known for. Former Cape Junior Lightweight champion Andile Phillips who came with other former professional boxers from the Buffalo City Municipality, asked Mandela Bay veterans to send at least five representatives “to meet us half-way – even if it is in Grahamstown – so that we can talk and see where we can work together. “We welcome this association. Now is the time for us former boxers to take charge of the sport and our well-being and avoid letting others to go out and source funding on our behalf,” said Phillips. This important day in the history of boxing in the area will also be remembered as a sad day as it was the funeral of former All-Africa International Miniflyweight champion Mthuthuzeli “Skeleton” Nene who died a few days earlier after a short illness. Nene, of Futshane Street in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage was the nephew of the great Vuyani “Wonder Boy” Nene.
