Funeral of murdered senior traffic officer this Sunday were shot. Two bullets hit him in his chest and arm, while the other three hit the wall of his house. “Who would do something like this? Who would rob us of a father, a loving and caring husband?” asked a still visibly distraught Kona, who added that although Camagu was his uncle, he treated him as his own son. The family was visited by Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, on Sunday. Khosi could not speak to the media on Monday. The motive for the killing is unknown and police spokesperson,

HE coldblooded murder of Nelson Mandela Bay Traffic Department’s Senior Superintendent, Owen Camagu, has devastated his family, his nephew Sisa Kona said. Camagu, who was gunned down in a hail of bullets in front of his house on Saturday evening, will be laid to rest after a service at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton this Sunday. The memorial service is scheduled to take place at the same venue tomorrow (Thursday) from 2 pm, while colleagues and senior traffic officers will gather at Camagu’s residence in Ntlolokotshane Street at 5pm. Camagu, who was a sports lover, was murdered after he arrived home from watching the rugby test between the Springboks and England at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium. Kona (31) said he, Camagu’s wife, Khosi (38), and Camagu’s sons were not at home during the attack. They were alerted by the neighbours. According to Kona, one of Camagu’s sons found him lying at the front door and rushed him to hospital. He was, however, certified dead on arrival. According to police five bullets

Dora Dora Nginza Nginza Hospital Hospital opens opens Paediatric Paediatric Oncology Oncology Ward Ward NCEBA DLADLA A Paediatric Oncology Ward was officially opened at the Dora Nginza Hospital this Monday to benefit children who suffer from cancer. “This huge project, which is run in conjunction with The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC), is a dream come true for the Dora Nginza Hospital staff who have been witnesses to the suffering of the patients and their families who need support in more ways than one,” said Dr. Florentina Ureche. “In South Africa cancer is the second biggest cause of death in children between 0 and 14 years. Over 800
children are diagnosed with cancer each year. This figure could be over 1600 owing to the late detection of cancer,” said Dr Ureche, adding that leukaemia is the most common childhood cancer representing over 24% of newly diagnosed cases, followed by solid tumors. “Today our dream became a reality owing to the tremendous work and generous support from CHOC,” added Dr Ureche. Chairman of CHOC Board Mzwandile Khanya explained the strenuous and stressful effects the disease has on the family of the little patients as they grapple with the daunting task of looking after the sufferers. He said the Ward will make a big difference.

New Korsten rehab centre expands ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL THE Survivors’ Lifeskills Centre in Korsten is expanding after an overwhelming increase in patients owing to an article that appeared in the Port Elizabeth Express in May. The Survivors’ Lifeskills Centre was established by Mohamed Mayet, who also fought with addiction years ago. His method of rehabilitation is very popular as it contains a full herbal detox, with no prescribed medication. A building in Highfield Road, not far from the Survivors’ Lifeskills Centre, is now being renovated especially to accommodate female patients. The new building will provide both rehabilitation and recreation facilities for girls and women. Omar Mallick, a contractor, has donated material and workmen to renovate the building. The first Survivors’ Lifeskills Centre caters only for male patients and is run on Muslim principles, meaning that men and women cannot socialise
under one roof. The facility, however, caters for all nationalities, creeds and religions. After the article appeared in the PE Express, the centre was inundated with calls from people who needed help with addiction, and there was also assistance offered by family members of patients the centre has helped. “I never expected there to be such a great response after the article in the PE Express. It has caused us to start with phase two of the centre much sooner than expected. There are so many people out there who need help, and I simply cannot turn anyone away. So there is an urgent need for us to get the second centre up and running as soon as possible,” said Mayet. Also forming part of the team is Altaaf Swartz, Sharmiel Swartz, Nasreen Pillay and Fahldeela Salie. The new building still needs furniture and appliances, and donations would be welcomed. For more information call Mayet on 0 079 172 1921.

Motherwell Youth launches a Community Centre in NU 11 NCEBA DLADLA MOTHERWELL in Port Elizabeth could soon have a Community Centre which will look after the interests of youth development in NU11. The official launch of Lukhanyolwethu Community Development Project at Brandley Menemene Wesleyan Church in Mntanezulu Street, NU11 on Saturday 30 June is going to help change things around in this area, according its director Vuyelwa Qashani. A Filing Clerk at South City Financial Planners Qashani (34), Amanda Nzelani, Zoleka Sithebe and Thando Kotyi, who are directors of the project, are already reaping the fruits of their work
through the success of the Ukhanyo Pre-school which they launched in February. The school has 33 toddlers with three teachers looking after their educational needs. The Lukhanyolwethu project which means “Our Light” is divided into three categories, the foundation, the youth and adults. Their aim is to bring change in an area that needs it. Qashani said the pre-school was part of its foundation phase. On Saturday children from the creche will receive goodies and clothes thanks to Qashani’s bosses and other sponsors. Motherwell Community Police Forum (CPF) Chairperson Nomawethu Jama said, “The community is looking forward, with great anticipation, to the launch of this NPO. They are hoping it will change things around
in this area that knows no development,” said Jama. According to Jama, the youth of the area destroy their lives with booze and drugs. Jama said although there are cases of rape reported in the area, there are many cases that are not reported because of lack of evidence - as the victims were drunk during the incident. “Worse still, some of the youth involved in crime are still at school. Some passed matric but because they don’t have funds to continue with education or at least find jobs, they become victims of drug-lords by selling drugs and get deeper involved in crime,” said Jama. Jama hailed the vision of Vuyelwa Qashani and her co-directors of this NPO which she believes will surely make a difference in the lives of the youth of the area.

School garden provides food for children and adults Dumani Primary School teacher Xoliswa Mambalu shows the good looking crop in their garden which provides healthy nutrition for their children.Photo: NCEBA DLADLA
NCEBA DLADLA WHEN Dumani Primary School received the news that the school was categorized in quintile four, and therefore not qualifying to get free meals that are provided by the Department of Education to benefit pupils, the principal and staff rolled up their sleeves to come up with a plan. “We thought of planting a garden to provide fresh food for our children,” said principal Simphiwe Mkangelwa. He added: “We had to do something. Most of the parents that bring children to this school are unemployed. We knew our children needed at least one decent meal a day.” The school is now running a very successful garden with the help of Fruit and Veg City in Newton Park to benefit over 800 pupils of the school. They plant the seedlings and get good crops of spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, beetroot and carrot. “We now provide our pupils with a cooked meal a day – where they eat fresh vegetables for healthy living,”

PORT Elizabeth primary school learners had an opportunity to get a month of lessons offered by teachers from the United Kingdom. Retired teachers and volunteers, Robert Reid of Ireland and Christen Wisdom and Deidre MacGuire both from England, taught at Emafini Primary School in KwaDwesi, until the schools closed for vacation last Friday. This project was a joint venture by Saga, a UK-based company that gives an opportunity to retired teachers to offer their services world-wide as volunteers, and the Calabash Trust. “Reid, who taught English and Science, has helped learners improve their understanding and performance in the language as well as in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Science Expo that they partake in annually,” said school principal Mzukisi January. The charitable Reid, who is also an avid sports enthusiast, bought sports equipment with his own money to benefit learners of the school. “Christen (Wisdom) bought teaching aids to assist learners with learning difficulties and for physical education. In no time the learners responded positively to the teaching,” said January. Reid agreed: “We were so amazed by the manner in which they responded to the exercises. They are so keen to learn and, with enough support, will surely succeed in life.”

said teacher Xoliswa Mambalu who looks after the garden with the children. Dumani is also a member of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Southern Africa (WESSA)’s ecoschools project which focuses on water conservation and keeping the environment clean. “We use new methods of planting the garden; that is tilling the soil and using grass as mulch for water conservation. The grass keeps the soil moist and warm,” said Mambalu. “The other advantage is that we can mix three different seeds in the same plot - to keep away pests and insects - all thanks to the teaching we receive from Wessa. The local community also benefits from this partnership, said Mambalu. Unemployed parents who run a community garden in the school are also trained in these new methods. “We work together to develop what is best for both us – the school and the community. If we don’t have something that we want to cook and they have it, they give it to us. We cook and enjoy the meal,” Mambalu told PE Express Indaba.
With a passion for reading, MacGuire bought books and shelves for the school’s library and gave the learners reading classes in what was termed “Drop everything and read” every Friday. “They taught us everything, including drama. I am so happy. I want to thank them,” said Kamva Kula (13) a grade 7 learner at the school. January also thanked his teachers Hlumisa Marenene and Nobom Tambo, who assisted the volunteers in this project which will have a long-term benefit for the learners who are mostly from Veeplaas, Soweto-on-sea, KwaNoxolo, Ezinyoka, Joe Slovo and Missionvale.

Matric class of 2012: The time has come to explore and apply for tertiary study in 2013 AS the June holidays are fast approaching its end, so are the deadlines for applying to tertiary institutions. An education expert warns that those who want to pursue studies next year must, without delay, investigate their options and submit applications to the tertiary institutions of their choice. “It is imperative that the lessons of the last three or four years are used to make this group’s experience less stressful than those of the thousands upon thousands of prospective students who had their dreams dashed in recent years,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education. In past years, many prospective students left their registrations and applications until the last minute (or even later). Great distress resulted when masses of applications could
not be considered because they were late, a candidate’s chosen course was already fully subscribed, or a schoolleaver’s academic record disqualified him or her for a chosen path. “This year’s matrics must act immediately to ensure they have sufficient time to investigate their options and apply timeously. Taking action now can save a lot of heartache and complications – including unexpected financial blows – later,” says Coughlan. She says the following tips will empower students to make the best choices for their unique circumstances, without the pressure of looming deadlines forcing them in a direction they would not otherwise have chosen: • Broaden your scope and check out campuses for yourself. • Check the facts. “This is your fu-
ture so fully explore registration and accreditation, entrance requirements, duration of qualification, price, campus size, equipment, staffing and success rates...” • Keep your options open by having options. “You must apply to more than one institution and even across institution types (for instance public and private institutions, universities and colleges). It is also better to apply for more than one qualification. • Meet the deadlines. “Several institutions have surprisingly early closing dates and it is important to get your application in on time. • Remember, life is not lived by degrees. Coughlan points out that it is a myth that all the best opportunities come to those with degrees. • Local is “lekker”. It is great if an institution can claim international
recognition, says Coughlan. But she warns that there are many scams that could see you pay for a qualification that has no value in SA. “Look for evidence of a locally registered qualification that has international recognition from a reputable international partner or for relationships that enable you to achieve here and internationally. Just because it is international does not make it good – there are many tragic stories of students being taken in by unscrupulous international institutions.” • The beauty of accreditation may only be skin deep, so you need to investigate. “Some institutions advertise accreditation by a range of different organisations. But while the list of acronyms and logos can look impressive, they may have absolutely no value,” warns Coughlan.
“ If a website does not provide you with detail or is only one or two clicks deep it is important to try to find out more.” • Talk to different people. Coughlan says that the best source of information remains word of mouth. “What you need to do is talk to students registered at institutions you have heard about but never been to. Ask about that student’s experience of service, class sizes, personal attention, campus safety and success rates.” “By giving yourself more time and arming yourself with as much information as possible, you will be laying a solid foundation for your studies and your future. The best way to ensure that you have options to choose from when you get your results, is to set up as many for yourself as you can right now,” says Coughlan.

Brighton Superspar staff in school uniform for Youth Day SELBY MADIKANE THE shoppers thought that Brighton Superspar was a classroom when they saw the neatly dressed staff wearing uniforms of their former schools on Youth Day. According to the Brighton Superspar promotional manager Andiswa Lupuwana, Youth Day reminded them of their school days.
Lupuwana stated that June 16 was one of the most important holidays in the history of South Africa. “During this all-important holiday hundreds of young persons lost their lives during the Soweto student uprisings on June 16, 1976, fighting for a quality education for all – irrespective of colour, race, creed or sex – against the apartheid government,” said Lupuwana. Referring to today’s youth, Lupuwana made mention of their challeng-
es like the high unemployment rate, HIV/Aids, drug-abuse, teenage pregnancy and lack of financial assistance with their studies. Lupuwana urged young people to take education seriously. “The youth must dream of constructive things and be goal- orientated. Today the youth have more opportunities than the 1976 youth.Young people: focus on your future. Your positive attitude is the right weapon towards your goal realisation.”

Indaba Art & Entertainment Madlakane Music Academy launch for wouldbe opera singers in KwaNobuhle NCEBA DLADLA A CALL has been made for young opera singers from KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage to join the Madlakane Music Academy launched recently in memory of the late Wandile Wara Madlakane. The Madlakane Music Academy is, according to its founder and head, Sidima Nkumanda, a befitting tribute and honour to the Uitenhage born and bred opera singer Madlakane who has represented the metro and province well in the national musical landscape. According to Nkumanda, Madlakane died in 2003 just on the verge of going overseas to pursue his musical career. Nkumanda said Madlakane was one of the best South African tenor solo artists who was involved in many opera music programmes. He added that he would, however, be remembered for performing with the Eastern Cape Philhar-

monic Orchestra for many years under the baton of Professor Gerald Lock. “In memory of Wara Madlakane, we’d like children between the ages of 7 and 14 years to join the academy. We’d like to train and develop them into wellprepared singers,” said an upbeat Nkumanda. They also wish to bring back the art form, to nurture local young talent and also to educate the youth about the intricacies of music. Nkumanda is hoping the local Departments of Education as well as Art and Culture will later form part of the project aimed at assisting under-privileged children to become professional musicians. Application forms are available at the Uitenhage and KwaNobuhle libraries and at the offices of Councillors Loyiso Stemele, Lucky Vumazonke and Andile Gqabi. For more information contact Nkumanda at 0 079 309 9768.

Lelethu Mahambehlala is a poet of note NCEBA DLADLA THE day she first stepped on to the stage at the Barn in the Opera House in 2003, to entertain the crowds during the launch of Nubian Mantombazana, a non-profit making organisation, it was clear that Lelethu Mahambehlala has arrived. That day a star was born and nothing would ever stand in her way. She is now heading the organisation and also a poet par excellence with words that pierce the heart and calls for action. Lelethu, better known as Poetic Soul has won many accolades and starred in documentaries by film-makers dissecting her noble art. Lelethu’s voice of reason has been heard during various special events, and she holds the title as the winner of the Lentswe Poetry Project Competition for Women’s Day. Born in East London 30 years ago, Lelethu of Central, Port Elizabeth, is an LLB graduate from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University who matriculated at Pearson High School. She calls herself “a very simple girl who is trying to live her dream to the fullest.” Lelethu says she wants to be a vessel of truth. She wants her powerful words to invoke action and reaction. She wants the weak, women and children, the downtrodden and abused to finally wake up and say, “enough is enough!”.
Lelethu has performed alongside great poets and musicians like the published Lebo Mashile and Mak Manaka, Thabiso Sikwane of SAFM, awardwinning Simphiwe Dana, Zulu Boy and Siseko Pame. “Some people think that I’m a feminist. But I say I’m a fighter for human rights, though at times it comes across as if I am more a women’s activist. I
don’t want humans – men, women and children – to be downtrodden. I’ll continue to highlight the ills of exploitation and oppression. That’s what I’m about,” said Lelethu proudly. Asked why she did not practise as a lawyer she retorted: “I am practising in this field. I am happy in what I am doing and yes, it pays the bills.”

Clinics to help children with facial deformities SMILING is one of life’s simple pleasures, but for some children a smile is a gift they can only dream about receiving. One in 700 children is born with a disfiguring cleft lip or palate, impeding their ability to eat, breathe and speak. Fortunately, there is a smile on the horizon. The Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, in association with the Department of Health and the Smile Foundation, are excited to announce that the Eastern Cape’s second annual ‘Smile Week’ will be held at the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital from August 13 to 17. During ‘Smile Week’ they will be operating on children from all over the province with a variety of facial abnormalities, including cleft lips and palates, burn injuries and ear deformities. They offer world-class, multi-disciplinary interventions and solutions free of charge to children suffering from craniofacial abnormalities. As such, a ‘Smile Team’ comprising doctors, speech therapists and psychologists will be visiting hospitals throughout the Eastern Cape in July, running ‘Smile Clinics’ to identify children who could benefit from ‘Smile Week 2012.’ The ‘Smile Team’ will be visiting Settlers Hospital in Grahamstown on July 2, Cradock Provincial Hospital on Tuesday, July 3 and Midlands Hospital in Graaff-Reinet on Wednesday, July 4. Children with facial abnormalities, their families and friends are encouraged to visit the team at these hospitals.

EP Children’s Home celebrates 123 years THE EP Children’s home is 123 years old this year and is still going strong. The Eastern Province Child and Youth Care Centre (formerly known as the EP Children’s Home) was founded in 1889 and is the oldest centre of its kind in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. In 1905, they moved into their present premises in Lennox Street, Glendiningvale (opposite the SABC). According to the Home’s director, Terry Hattingh, from 1905 to 1985 the majestic white buildings that can be seen from Lennox Street served as home to the children. “In 1985 it was however decided to build cottages so that our children could experience family living rather than a hostel environment. We use one of the original buildings for administration and the other two are rented out to generate income for the centre,” said Hattingh. Seven of their eight double storey cottages house 15 children and their Child Care worker each. She is assisted by an assistant who comes in 6 hours per day, and a general assistant for the household duties. “Imagine having to get 15 children up and ready for school each day and to make sure all 15 of your children have done their homework!” said Hattingh. “Children are placed in our Cen-
tre as a last resort if they are found to be in need of care by the Children’s Court. This is often because they have been exposed to violence and abuse or have been neglected by their caregivers. In total, we accommodate 104 children of all races between the ages of 4 and 18 years,” said Hattingh. According to Hattingh they are faced each year with the challenge of balancing their budget for normal operating expenses for the food and clothing for their children, as the shortfall for total operating costs and the amount they receive from the state by way of subsidies is 60% of the budget. “This percentage increases every year as the state has pegged the amount per child to R1 700 per month. The amount has not increased since 2008, yet food, transport and clothing costs have rocketed,” said Hattingh. According to Hattingh people can help the Home in the following ways: • Renting their office premises of which they have 500 square metres presently available • Donating unwanted clothing, linen and household goods • Adopting and supporting a cottage • Regular monthly monetary donations – no matter how small. • By buying a few essentials every time you do your shopping and bringing them to the home: food-

Blind man’s music dream realised stage with national gospel artists such as Sfiso Ncwane, Andile B, Zodwa Twecu and Nombongo. “Melikhaya (Heugh) is very active in community development and teaches music to young people in local schools and churches,” said Cllr Vaaltyn who was really touched by Heugh’s resolve never to let his disability lead to inability. Heugh said that not having a keyboard made it impossible for him to get gigs to play at or to record his own music. “I am very thankful to Cllr Vaaltyn and the municipality for the sponsorship. It is going to make a big difference,” said Heugh. He did mention however, that he still needed a PA system, an amplifier and at least two speakers to have the whole thing working. “But, I am sure, God is opening doors for me. Someone out there will come and assist to complete the whole music set,’ said an upbeat Heugh.

BLIND musician Melikhaya Heugh’s dream of owning a keyboard was realised last Sunday when this very special gift was handed over to him. Ward 45 Councillor Monde Vaaltyn said he facilitated the matter between Heugh and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality through the mayor’s Discretionary Fund. Heugh, who was born blind, is an inspiring musician of note from KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage who has not allowed his disability to stand in his way. Heugh is a Nkqubela FM volunteer Disc Jockey who presents the Weekend Breakfast Show every Saturday from 6am to 8am. He has featured in two of the Twins for the Glory of God albums. He has also taken part in a number of local and national competitions and has shared the
Red Location tours take off THE Red Location Backpacker Primary Co-operative took their first guests, 5 Dutch volunteers, on a tour of Red Location using the train last week Friday. The tour captured the route that workers took daily to work at the harbor. The guests then disembarked at the New Brighton Station - the site of the first arrests connected to the 1952 Defiance Campaign. The tour is enhanced by comments and narrative from the backpacker owners who were active in the liberation struggle. Today these women con-
tinue as transformation agents sharing their stories with tourists, local and international, with learners and students and our senior citizens and women groups. They impact their communities with the reading programmes they have started and sport programmes promoting healthy living and active citizenship among the youth nationally and internationally. To showcase the shared heritage, even in local cuisine, rostelli (roosterbrood) and African potjies were served.
