whether – the bodies of their loved ones would be found.

RELATIVES and friends of the missing, presumed drowned, Motherwell rugby players yesterday had to brave a third day of not knowing when – and even

On Monday relatives were told by capt. Anton Groenewald of the Swartkops Police Station, as they gathered at the Raymond Mhlaba community hall, that

it could take weeks before the bodies might be washed up to the shore and that some might even not be found, reported Die Burger yesterday. The tragedy, which has received media coverage nationwide and internationally, occurred on Sunday after a beach training session of the Motherwell Rugby Football Club. They were training for the Easter Rugby Tournament taking place in Cape Town in two-weeks time. After the training session some of the players went to cool off in the ocean. They were among a group of about 21 fellow bathers who were swept out by a freak rip current. Masixole Myosana (29)’s body was found shortly thereafter. The missing men are Xolisa Nyembezi (27), Arthur Peters (30), Lundi Muleka (29) and Avuyile Tshabalala (18). The other could not be named as his family was not yet informed at time of going to print. According to Motherwell police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) started an extensive search for the missing men and increased the search yesterday by using specialised equipment including two more boats. Officers were also patrolling the area on foot, on horseback, in vehicles and in helicopters. Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile and Portfolio Councillor on Sport and Recreation Councillor Babalwa Lobishe have been giving support to the families of the players, said Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron. “This is a huge loss to the municipality. We had high expectations of these rugby players who were still at the developmental stage of their sporting careers,” said Baron. The Municipality has arranged for counselling for the traumatised survivors and members of their families at the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre in Motherwell on Monday afternoon. “I have spoken to the president of the Eastern Province Kings rugby union and members of the community today (Monday) and this is a devastating tragedy,” said SA Rugby Union President Oregan Hoskins on hearing the news. He added: “To have their afternoon turned into a tragedy is shocking for the whole rugby community and our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.”

Delight as Dianne finally gets her long lost baby NCEBA DLADLA THE wait to be united with her baby is over for Dianne Wabanie whose baby was allegedly snatched from her, while only 3days old, by a student nurse at the Dora Nginza hospital about three

weeks ago. A 28-year old suspect, Sibongile Mama, handed herself over to the police a week after the incident after the baby was recovered and handed to the authorities by a relative of Mama. Police, however, would not let Dianna see or be with the baby before the DNA tests were done and

results received. “The blood samples have confirmed beyond any reasonable doubt that the baby belongs to Dianne. We as police are overjoyed as police that the mother has been reunited with the baby,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu.

outside area have a clear view of the golf course which, according to Theo Geertshuis, who was responsible for the layout 24 years ago as part of the Gary Player design team, “has stood the test of time”. Fish River Sun greenskeeper, Tim Ridden, is continuing with the approach of working with nature to ensure that “The Fish” remains one of the country’s favourite courses. Administration manager, Karen Lee, says the staff team at the resort continue to work together to ensure that there is as much action off the course as on it. “As a family destination, we understand that parents can really relax only when their children are happy and safe. Our activities are designed to do just that.” A relatively new addition to the attractions at the Fish River Sun Resort is the Castaways facility near the beach, which serves as a perfect base for a day in the sun and waves, or just relaxing by paddling in the Old Woman’s River. The river mouth and stretch of beach along the Fish River Sun property are also favourite spots for fishermen. The Fish River Sun was taken over in 1999 by black economic empowerment company Emfuleni Resorts – which also owns The Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth. As part of its bid commitment for its present licence, The Boardwalk cross-subsidises the Fish River Sun.

‘Prayers alone won’t cure illness you need treatment,’ says doctor NCEBA DLADLA FIVE Port Elizabeth women and members of Jesus Dominion International (JDI) Church have claimed to be cured from serious diseases through miraculous means. But a local doctor and a herbalist have warned that prayers alone will not cure the sick. In an age that humanity is falling prey to different kinds of diseases, hundreds of people from Nelson Mandela Bay flock to the JDI church in North End, which works in association with the Tim Omotoso Global Outreach (TOGO), and claim healing through the power of the Holy Spirit. While science maintains that there is no cure for HIV, Nomsa (assumed name), 31, of East London came to Port Elizabeth this week because the head and founder of the Church, Bishop Timothy Omotoso, was here. She tested positive for HIV in 2009, but claims she has since gained health and strength after prayers from the Nigerian born, Omotoso. “I got very sick and tested positive for HIV. By January 2010 I was admitted to Frere hospital. My CD4 Count was 16 and I was very weak and dying. My weight was only 29kg. I had lost hope of living until Bishop Omotoso prayed for me,” said Nomsa. “He told me the curse that I carried in my body was gone. Look at me now, I am healed,” said Nomsa. Mother of two, Phatheka Mdodana

(38), was in the last stage of breast cancer when the healing power of God touched her in 2010, she said. Mdodana said she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in a terminal stage, and had lost all her hair after receiving all chemo- and radiotherapy, “But I kept my faith as the Bishop Omotoso prayed for me,” she said. Nozuko Tsila too thinks the prayers helped her to live a better life. Brenda Cele (50) of Kleinskool has her own story of a miraculous healing which she received from the church whilst Cikizwa Mzinyathi (53) of Ximiya Street in New Brighton said she was certified blind by the doctors but now she can see. “The highly anointed man of God is doing all these things. Bishop Omotoso is being used mightily by God to heal the people, give sight to the blind and make the lame walk,” said Pastor Jude Tosh of the church and part of Tim Omotoso Global Outreach. But Dr. Fred Isaacs, a member of the Traditional Healers Association (THO) disagrees. “I know of someone who refused to take medication for HIV because he believed his pastor was going to cure him with prayers. He died, eventually,” said Dr. Isaacs. Dr. Isaacs said people should differentiate between treatment and cure. He said there is currently no cure for HIV. “You can’t cure aids by faith-healing. You can just treat HIV/Aids and you need medication and herbs to do that; and not by prayers alone,” said Dr. Isaacs.

Following in the footsteps of great musicians that have called Port Elizabeth home, Lazola Yengeni on vocals, Yanga Ndzamela (Piano), Sicelo Gangxa (Trombone), Xola Mrasi (Drums), Sicelo Tabata (Keyboard), Phakamile Msizi (Alto Saxophone), Anda Mvandaba (Bass guitar) and Elethu Mbebe on vocals only need support to take their music to the higher level. That is according to local music promoter Bongani Siyona. Siyona, a sergeant in the SA Police Service (SAPS) in New Brighton who manages local gospel sensation Nombongo (Siyona), saw the youths performing during Nombongo’s show and was inspired, he told PE Express Indaba. “I saw the boys in Motherwell last year during Nombongo’s CD launch. We always give up-and-coming artists an opportunity to perform during Nombongo’s shows and these boys did not disappoint,” said Siyona, adding that the Soul Elements are now regularly performing at events and functions. “We work together musically even though we are from different townships of Port Elizabeth. Some are from KwaZakhele while the rest are from Motherwell, said Group Leader Yanga, adding that their music is a mixture of gospel, soul and jazz. Soul Elements believes in the power of music as an instrument for cultural change. According to Yanga, music has an ability to transform people and communities and they are happy to be involved the art. “We do a lot of cover versions but also compose and sing our own songs,” said Yanga, adding that as the group they have Bongani Tulwana of Mojazz to thank for having inspired and taught them all there is to know about music and the discipline involved.

GM issues lapdesks to primary school in Kwazakhele GENERAL Motors South Africa (GMSA), in association with The Lapdesk Company, handed out 475 Lapdesks, valued at around R50 000 to disadvantaged children from the Mzomtsha Primary School, in Kwazakhele. The handover means that all children at the school, from grade R through to grade seven, will now have their own Lapdesks – an ergonomically designed writing surface made from durable, child proof materials that is also extremely lightweight - which they can use at school and take home with them. Speaking at the handover, school principal Mntuwenkosi Mashologu, said the school, which was established in 1958 and currently had 465 learners and 16 teachers, battled with limited resources. “Most of our buildings are dilapidated and subject to vandalism. We have no paving, no administration offices, many classrooms have no electricity and conditions are generally a challenge for teaching the children,” he said. Mashologu said at least half the learners at the school did not have a proper desk to sit at. “We are all very happy to have received these Lapdesks, as it will make a huge difference in the ability of learners to do their schoolwork,” he said. GMSA’s Public Relations Officer, Michelle Wilson, said each school underwent a stringent selection process before being identified as a beneficiary. “Education is one of the most important elements in a child’s up-

It was nice to see what a difference GMSA and Isuzu have been able to make in these children’s

lives through this donation,” said Wilson. Dimba Mjalo, the Lapdesk Company’s co-ordinator for the Eastern Cape, demonstrated to the learners how to sit with the desk on their laps

to ensure they maintain a good posture, and also pointed out to them that the Isuzu Lapdesk has a timetable, a multiplication table and an alphabet on it, which they can use when they study.

Wilson added that each Lapdesk also had a space on which the children could write their names and what they aspired to become one day. “Many children indicated that they want to become doctors and lawyers, but a few also mentioned that they want to work at General Motors so that they can drive an Isuzu bakkie,” said Wilson. Port Elizabeth District circuit manager for the Department of Education, Pamela Mbusi, who had been assigned to Mzomtsha Primary School for the past year, praised General Motors and The Lapdesk Company for their contribution. “I don’t have words to express what this donation means to the school, the parents and the department of education. GMSA has made an invaluable investment in these children’s futures,” she said. “While we recognise education is a constitutional right and that it is the responsibility of government to provide the resources, it is impossible to meet the unlimited needs without the assistance of companies such as General Motors,” she said. Lapdesk founder, Shane Immelman, said his company, which has been manufacturing Lapdesks since 2004, had already distributed in excess of 730 000 Lapdesks in South Africa, but said this was just the tip of the iceberg. “Nationally there are between 3.7 and 4 million learners who do not have access to desks. Schools in the Eastern Cape alone have a shortfall of around 780 000 desks,” he said. GMSA has already distributed more than 2 000 Lapdesks across the country.

R815 000 donated to deserving NGOs in the Bay NCEBA DLADLA EMFULENI Eastern Cape Community Development Trust (EECCDT) gave deserving Nelson Mandela Bay-based Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) a shot in the arm with a donation of R815 000 at a function held at the Red Location Museum in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth last Thursday. To qualify for funding, the organisations had to be registered as NonProfitmaking Organisations and whose work is clearly visible and progressive. It was a moment of truth and reflection on the real meaning of ubuntu as the 10 beneficiaries received cheques of between R60 000 to R120 000 - to continue doing their good

work of social welfare, improving and uplifting the poor and needy communities. Their work includes looking after children, elderly, the sick (including HIV/Aids infected and affected) and the vulnerable in society. The EECCDT Chairperson MK Rubushe explained that the primary aim of the 1998 established Trust was to create funds from which both the capital and income will be utilised for exactly this purpose. The funding, according to Rubushe, was the dividends received from Zonwabise Resort Holdings, the BEE partner of the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World of which EECCDT is a shareholder. They use the income received to fund deserving projects identified by the Trustees in their own discretion. “I have a very special place in my heart for all the organisations we

support as we have not only provided them with funds to fulfil their daily needs, but created a platform of hope for the future. We strive to assist them through funding owing to their continuous charisma shown to their respective communities,” said Emfuleni Resorts Chairperson Bongi Siwisa. Infrastructure and Engineering Portfolio Councillor Andile Mfunda thanked EECCDT for its good gesture on behalf of the mayor who could not attend owing to other municipal commitments. The equitable distribution of funds to deserving organisations was described by Trustee Mike Naran as “an emotional event” and Nelson Mandela Bay Moral Regeneration Movement Chairperson Reverend Mcebisi Xundu said it proved true the saying: “I am, because you are.”

Bontle Tigers LRFC wins final SELBY MADIKANE

Happy moments for winners Bontle Tigers LRFC.

Photo: Selby Madikane

HISTORY was made when the newly established Bontle Tigers Ladies Rugby Football Club won their first final 10-5 over the experienced Zwide United during their EP Rugby Union Mayoral Cup Section B encounter at Dan Qeqe Stadium on 21 March. Tigers seemed to respect United as they gave them room to attack. However, it was Tigers that piled more pressure with their diminutive scrum half Itumeleng Njwayi scoring a try to put their side 5-0 up. United put Tigers on the back foot,

but Tigers’ no. 8 Nozipho Bell denied their counterparts any scoring opportunities. At the half-way mark of the first half, Tigers’ left wing, Lutho Sajini scored their first unconverted try in the corner to level the matters 5-5. Sajini’s try changed the complexion of the game as they launched an attack against United. In the dying moments of the second half, Sajini scored the final try to make the final score 10-5 in favour of Tigers. Bell played a phenominal role towards her team’s success. As such, she was voted as the player of the match.
