HELMET? þ Leather jacket? þ Biker boots? þ Soft toy? þ The time for the annual Toy Run is fast approaching, and countrywide motorcyclists are gearing up for one of the biggest motorcycle-related charity events in South Africa on November 27, which is now in its 20th year. This year Port Elizabeth organisers of the event aim to raise R200 000 for less fortunate children. Last year R146 000 was raised. The riders will start at the Pick n Pay in William Moffett Expressway and make their way to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The public are welcome to come along and support these “Knights in shining armour”, toys in hand on horse(power) back, either at Pick n Pay or at the Stadium. Entrance is R40. There will also be a big truck parked near Pick n Pay on the Sunday where toys of any kind –

and even clothes – can be donated. The Toy Run, which is organised by Midnight Motorcycle Club and Zwartkops Round Table 195, will this year benefit three charity organisations – the Missionvale Care Centre, Solidarity Helping Hand and the POPS Foundation. They will also host a Christmas Party for about 350 children from various children’s homes on Saturday, November 26 at the Stadium. Here the children will be entertained, receive party packs, Christmas hats and other goodies.
The route the motorcyclists will follow is as follows: Start at Pick n Pay Hyper in William Moffett; Turn left from Pick n Pay into William Moffett; Right into Cape Road; Then left into Mount Road; Turn left again into Harrower Road; RightintoPrinceAlfredRoad; And finally left into Fettes Road, into the Stadium.

Metro taken to labour court over advertising of municipal manager position BETTIE GILIOMEE DR. Sitembele Vatala, director of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan, who has taken the metro to court in September for an interdict to prevent them from appointing a municipal manager, has on Monday launched contempt proceedings in the Labour Court for the metro’s failure to comply with the first court order. This according to his laywer Grant Howard of Kaplan Blumberg, who said the application, has been enrolled for next Monday at 10 am.
Apart from the position of municipal manager, other key positions that were advertised include executive directors of safety and security, infrastructure and engineering, human settlements, electricity and energy. The closing date for applications is Friday, November 25. Roland Williams, the municipality’s director of communications said that since the court action by Dr Vatala has not been finalised he cannot give comment on the matter since it is sub judice. With regard to the advertising of the vacancies, Williams said this was done as instructed by Dr Israel Tsatsire, Chief Operations Officer of the Metro.
It follows the re-advertising of this position in various national and local newspapers this past weekend and yesterday, despite the fact that the court case is still pending and have not yet been finalised. Dr. Vatala, was one of the candidates during the metro’s previous recruitment process for a municipal manager. He alleges that there was unlawful meddling with the results of the interview scores resulting in him appearing lower on the selection list. Die Burger reported earlier that the decision to advertise the municipal manager’s position despite Vatala’s court action to prevent them from appointing a municipal manager, was taken at a council meeting.

Pupils warned after a learner is robbed on the Framesby footbridge THE parents of school children using the Framesby footbridge have been warned to alert their children to be alert when they cross it. The caution followed after a scholar was robbed on Wednesday, November 9. A 15-year-old high school pupil was on his way home after he wrote his exam when the incident occurred. According to information, the learner used the bridge to cross the N2 highway when he was accosted by two men,
one armed with a knife, who demanded his cell phone. ADT Response Officer, Frank Rossouw, was passing through the area when he was flagged down by a group of children who alerted him about the incident taking place. Rossouw immediately pursued the suspects and apprehended both of them. He was assisted by the Framesby Neighbourhood Watch. The learner’s belongings were confiscated and handed back to the victim,
while the suspects were handed over to the local authorities. “By arresting these two suspects, we have helped to put an end to the criminal activities and have been able to play our part in making the area a little safer for all pedestrians who make use the bridge,” said Mike Byers, Managing Director for ADT Security Eastern Cape. Three weeks ago, ADT was also instrumental in the arrest of a mugger after a similar attack in Walmer.

Parents’, editors’ blood flows for SANBS school campaign PRIMARY school learners may be too young to donate blood but the South African National Blood Service is – through their Adopt A Month campaign – harnessing something that young children are very able (and willing) to do use their power of persuasion in return for a reward. Primary schools in the Metro each choose a month to run this campaign
where they receive a target and the winning class receives a cash prize to be used for their class. Learners have to encourage parents, family and friends to donate and the class with the highest percentage of participation wins. The Adopt a Month campaign is the brainchild of Maryke Harris, public relations practitioner at the SANBS’ Port Elizabeth branch and it has been running since October 2005.
Mrs Hendrine Niemand of Sunridge Primary has encouraged parents of her grade 1 class to visit and donate blood with her on Saturday at the Walker Drive Blood Donation Centre as part of the school’s Adopt a Month Campaign. Sunridge Primary School was the pilot school for the project and 87 units were donated. The campaign was held again at Sunridge in March the following year and 213 units were collected which resulted in the campaign being rolled out to other schools in the metro. This year Sunridge Primary School has adopted November for their campaign and they have a target of 200 donations. Keeping it in the family, one of the biggest campaigners for the project is Sunridge grade 1 teacher, Mrs Hendrine Niemand, who is Maryke’s mother. She has been so successful that her class has been tops every year since 2005. Determined that this year will be no excepttion, Mrs Niemand has encouraged parents of her class to visit and donate blood with her on Saturday at the Walker Drive Blood Donation Centre. A total of 13 units were collected for her class on the day. Also rolling up their sleeves for the Sunridge Primary campaign were the editors of the OP Koerante newspapers, Port Elizabeth Express, Kouga Express and UD News. Being a proud Sunridge parent (in Mrs Niemand’s class as well) and regular blood donor, Port Elizabeth Express editor Bettie Giliomee and Kouga Express editor, Monique Basson, who is also a regular donor, encouraged Heilie Combrinck, UD News editor to donate blood for the first time ever on Thursday. And the verdict from Heilie, who is now so motived that she is determined to become a regular donor: “I have wanted to do this for years, but have never plucked up the courage. The ever growing demand and the fact that there is no substitute on earth for blood, encouraged me to roll up my sleeve. This is a gift of life!”

Public participation sought over bylaws THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has started a comprehensive public participation campaign on a number of draft by-laws in order to accommodate stakeholder and public input into the bylaws as guides by Sections 12 (3)(b) and 15 of the Local Government: Municipality Systems Act, Act no. 32 of 2000. The by-laws under discussion are for Customer Care and Revenue Management, Tariffs, Assistance to the Poor and Credit Control. Two meetings were held last week. The draft by-laws were considered and approved by Council in principle earlier this year to allow for the public participation process. Community and stakeholder inputs will be considered and discussed in public meetings again in January next year. The by-laws/policies are available for inspection during normal working hours at all Customer Information Centres and municipal offices throughout Nelson Mandela Bay, at the security counter foyer at Lillian Diedericks

Leukemia sufferer tells how blood donations saved her life BETTIE GILIOMEE ALMOST 260 people who selflessly donated blood saved the life of a young Collegiate High School music teacher after she was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago. Nikkie Fyvie recounted her struggle with leukemia at the annual media breakfast of the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) last week to emphasize the importance of donating blood. On 15 December 2009 Nikkie received the diagnosis that changed her life forever. “I had enjoyed a fruitful school year, involving myself in every facet of educational life, and performing in orchestras and string quartets, around the Eastern Cape, when I realised I was not feeling myself. Rising in the morning left me as weary as the night before and I had developed large saucer-sized bruises on my legs,” Nikkie said about the circumstances leading to her being diagnosed with acute promyolycitic leukemia.
“I initially refused treatment, as I had only heard the negatives about chemotherapy, and in addition, the most shocking af all . . . I believed the doctors were wrong. Things like this didn’t happen to me – didn’t happen to 30-year olds who had run 11kms two days prior. After initially going into denial about her diagnosis, reality hit when she landed up in hospital and was told she would only have 48 hours to live if she didn’t receive a platelet transfusion and treatment. “The next afternoon I was flown to Cape Town as there was no treatment facility for me here. I was to spend 2,5 months in an isolation unit at Grootte Schuur Hospital, with my husband and parents,” said Nikki. An isolation ward is the size of an average child’s bedroom and any person entering the room needed to suit up in full medical attire. Further diagnostic tests revealed a white cell count of close to 200, where an average healthy person has a count of between 4 and 11. Rigorous chemo was administered for 5 days, after which they waited

for the cancer to react. As a result of the chemo, she was administered bag upon bag of platelets and blood. “Amidst all this drama, there was one huge ray of sunlight- I had been warned of the devastating side-effects of chemo, which had led me to refuse treatment at the start . . . nausea, vomiting, mouth sores. Well . . . I am still waiting! The doctors and nursing staff accused me of making them out to be fraudsters, as I experienced no horrible side effects. Obviously I lost my hair, but a miniscule price to pay in return for my life,” said Nikki. After this first round of chemo, tests revealed that the cancer was well on its way, but she was advised to receive another stronger round, as well as spinal chemo. After nearly three months, she was released to return to PE for further out-patient chemo at Provincial Hospital Haemotology Unit. She unfortunately contracted Sepsis, and was at St George’s Hospital again for two weeks. Here, she once again received platelets and blood. SANBS have worked out that it took almost 260 people’s blood donations to save her life. The SANBS head of marketing in the Eastern Cape, Elize van Zyl, said they were again approaching a difficult time of the year for SANBS. “Blood collections over this period drop significantly and this is mainly due to students and employees who are away on holiday. This means SANBS is unable to hold the regular blood drives at schools, universities or at large companies. More importantly, people are busy planning their festivities and are therefore not
available to go through to our donor centres,” said Elize. To address this the SANBS have planned many blood drives in shopping malls and at holiday resorts. One of these is the first-ever Youth Blood Drive on Thursday, December 8, at the Student Centre at Westview School. The drive is held in partnership with Bay FM and Pick n Pay hypermarket and is aimed at getting the youth to donate blood before the school holidays. It is, however, not restricted to a specific age group.

TANYA VAN ZYL EVERY year as Christmas approaches, people of all ages get super excited, because they know that Port Elizabeth’s Christmas tree artist will add another spectacular tree to his collection. Arthur Muller – a celebrity in his own right – brings joy to Port Elizabethans every year by not only opening his Christmas Wonderland house to the public to admire, but by donating the money he asks as entrance fee to a worthy cause. This year he will be donating the funds to St Mark’s Congregational Church’s Helping Hand, which feeds the needy. People who want to experience Arthur’s magic touch with Christmas trees, will be in

for a treat this year when they lay their eyes on his mesmerising black and white tree, which is inspired by the My Fair Lady movie. Arthur paid very fine attention to detail to this tree and spent hours in preparation and hard work to give some of the decorations his personal touch. Every one of the 14 hats used in this tree for example, was repainted black by Arthur and he also added a touch of glamour with diamaté and other sparkling decorations. He also used 210 m of fairy lights. “If your imagination can run away with you, then you can do anything! But, I must admit, decorating this tree according to the theme was very challenging and expensive,” Arthus said. Thus far the tree has cost him more or less R3 000 and all of his Christmas decorations together is valued at about R100 000, Arthur said. He has been decorating Christmas trees for
ten years – the first five years only entering it for competitions, whereafter he decided to carry on with the tradition, but at the same time to raise funds for charites. Every year he displays the previous year’s trees, together with his latest tree. The trees on display are an avant-garde tree, a traditional tree, an African tree, a Shakespearean tree, a Medieval tree, a pearl-and-berry tree and an ocean-star tree. And his favourite tree to date? “Definitely the My Fair Lady tree – without a doubt!” This year his designs will be on display from 2pm to 5pm on November 26, December 3, 10 and 17 at 4 Framesby Villas, Kabega Road. The entrance fee is R15 per person, which will go towards St Mark’s Helping Hand. Non-perishable food items can also be donated. For more information, contact Arthur at 0 082 565 4216.

SUMMERSTRAND VILLAGE 21 BIRTHDAY GIVE AWAY Summerstrand Village Shopping Centre is celebrating 21 years of seaside shopping with a “Win a Car” competition. The shopping centre, on the beachfront in Summerstrand, is a suburban shopping centre where the focus is on convenience. The shopping centre was built in 1990 as an openair centre. The centre, which initially was the only centre on the beachfront, was bought by Anglo Alpha Pension Fund and a complete renovation was undertaken in 1995 to enclose the centre. Two of three open court yards were covered with an eyecatching marquee roof, made from transparent fabric imported from Israel at a (then) cost of R250 000. The GLA was increased from 5037m2 to 5706m2 to provide extra space for Pick 'n Pay, which changed from a pantry to offering full supermarket facilities. In 2000 the centre was bought by Cham Properties and managed by Broll Properties Group. In 2002 the building's exterior was upgraded in the first phase of the renovation programme. The
programme's second phase, entailing the revamping of the interior was completed in 2005. Pick 'n Pay extended their shopping area in 2008 which increased the total GLA for the centre to 6186m2. A glass elevator was added towards the end of 2008 for the convenience of all their customers. “The shopping centre has seen how Summerstrand has changed from a sleepy to hustling and bustling suburb with hotels, guest houses, tourists and students” says Madie Venter, centre manager.

RESIDENTS can look forward to a fun-filled Golf Day in aid of the People Opposing Poverty Foundation (POPS) that is being held on December 9. Afterwards, an evening of awards and entertainment will take place at the same venue. The POPS Foundation operates with its members, their families and volunteers. They have been engaged in charitable activities for the past six years on a seasonal basis, aiming at providing special treats for underprivileged and orphaned kids as well as senior citizens living in old age homes. Currently their database reflects a total of 25 recipients of food supplies consisting of orphanages, children’s institutions, schools, soup kitchens and old age homes. This figure excludes individual families. Adoré Morgan of Bay FM, is steering the projects after she saw the great need throughout the Metro. She took
the initiative and convened a group of individuals, all of whom hold the best interests of the community dear to heart. Although these individuals hail from different backgrounds, they are unified by the common goals of uplifting the community and assisting those less fortunate than themselves. They pride themselves in having achieved all this with practically no budget, no funding and no fund-raising. The possibilities are endless as to what can be achieved with assistance from businesses and other members of the community. These measurements can be categorised as follows: • Normal 1.7 mmol/L • Borderline high 1.7 to 2.2 mmol/L High 2.3 to 5.6 mmol/L • Very high 5.7 to 11.3 mmol/L • Extremely high > 11.3 mmol/L • While it is well known that very high (above 5.6mmol/l) and extremely high levels of triglycerides (above 11.3mmol/l) are a risk factor for pancreatitis the risk associated with lower levels have been unclear. Most evidence suggests that Low Density (bad) cholesterol poses the greatest risk to the arteries and therefore treatment of dyslipidaemia, (raised levels of blood fats and/or cholesterol) always targets this as the first step. It is however clear that even in patients where Low Density (Bad) cholesterol levels are well controlled there remains some residual risk for cardiovascular disease. New evidence suggests that triglycerides are important indicators of this risk especially in diabetic patients. Not only do high triglycerides indicate an increased cardiovascular risk but they do so at much lower levels in diabetics than non-diabetics. High triglycerides are also important independent predictors of the risk of lower limb amputation. Triglyceride testing should therefore be an important component of managing any diabetic even where LDL levels are within target. Treating high triglycerides is recommended in all diabetics whenever they are elevated above normal (1.7mmol). CLARISSA VENTER A TRIP down memory lane. That is exactly what residents can expect when they hear Don GEE, or rather Don Grithis (78) when he sings ballads from the 1960’s and 1970’s Don, a retired pensioner who has been in the construction business most of his life, is a local singer who entertains crowds from all over the city. Most lately he performed at the Malabar Community Hall, singing alongside the great Donna Africa, who is well-known for her stage performances with the hilarious Gino Fabbri.
Don, who retired at the age of 65 took up singing lessons, “because I can’t sit still.” “After my retirement I did a bit of handyman work for the elderly, but that became a bit too much,” Grithis said. So, my wife Pam suggested that I take up singing lessons. I have never sung before, only once when I was in a choir at the age of 12.” Grithis, who sings under the stage name, Don GEE, usually entertain the elderly at old age homes. He also sings for the South African Association for Retired Persons (SARP). “At the end of 2009 my music teacher asked me whether I wanted to sing professionally of just for fun. I am doing this for fun, I thought.” Being an introvert, he said, can be difficult, because he was completely out of his comfort zone when he first started singing in front of crowds. I auditioned to perform at the Splash Festival last year, but that did not turn out very well at all. So, my confidence fell. Weeks later, however, I walked past the Westway Café in Cape Road and saw a poster about a music talent night where auditions will take place. “I found out more and eventually my wife and I only attended the evening as part of the audience. But, I did give them my recorded CD. During the auditions one of the judges asked me to go on stage and perform. I was taken aback and very nervous. I had stage fright, but it turned out very well. I got three standing ovations that evening.” Grithis, whose favourite song is “My way” from Frank Sinatra, has done 17 shows this year. “I do this because it is fun and the elderly enjoys it so much. Some elderly people are in wheelchairs, but you should see them when they do hand dances. And, because I sing music from a long time ago, I bring back so many memories for them.” He sometimes performs with a singing partner while his wife does line-dancing. He has even started wearing wigs to perform certain songs.

Locals win with Pretty things 4 Little Things ONE is never too old to mean something to someone else, and to warm a child’s heart with a home-made gift. The Pretty things for Little Things-project presented by Age-in-Action, gives senior citizens the chance to put their creative talent to work to make something for a needy child. This year a whopping 14 500 unique handmade articles were entered for the Pretty Things for Little Things competition presented by Age-in-Action which is sponsored by Shorite and Checkers. Two Port Elizabeth woman ended amongst the top three category winners in the county. For the Clothing category Marlene Lang came first, while Julie Scarr, won the Other category with her doll house. The project annually invites all Shoprite and Checkers customers, especially senior citizens over 60, to use their creative talents to make something for a needy child. By entering they
stand a chance of winning generous cash vouchers that can be used at Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper stores nationwide. The handmade items created by all contestants will be distributed as early Christmas presents and bring joy to thousands of disadvantaged SA children during the coming festive season. Entrants were invited to make anything practical, durable and safe that a child can wear or play with. Articles could be made of any resources available. The items were entered into four categories namely soft toys, blankets, clothing, and other articles made from materials such as wood, tin, wire etc. Three provincial winners per category were selected in each province. The provincial winners received gift vouchers to the value of R2 500, and also went through to the final judging round in which three national winners per category were chosen. The national judging took place in September.

Extended studio hours for Front Page Christmast Baby entry photos WORKING parents who would like to have professional photographs taken to enter their baby for the PE Express Frontpage Christmas Baby competition, can make use of extended open day studio hours at Pro Design Photographers this weekend and next week. Although parents can enter any photo, Pro Design in Westering, is offering parents special open day photos at the much reduced price of R80 for 2 or R100 for 4. This Saturday and Sunday (November 19 and 20) they will be open from 1pm to 5pm. This will be the last weekend that open days will be held. Other open days are from 1pm to 5pm on November 16, 17 and 18 November and from 10am to 6pm on November 21, 22, 23 and 24.
No bookings are necessary on these open days, which will be held at Pro Design Photographers studio at 26 Joan’s Way in Westering. Entry forms are available from Pro Design Photographers, the PE (www.pe-exExpress website press.co.za) or from our offices in Die Burger building, off William Moffett Expressway. Entries close at 10am on Thursday, November 25. Four winners will be chosen – one for each edition of the PE Express, namely Southern, Metro and Northern and PE Express Indaba. The competition is open to all babies who are younger than oneyear-old on December 25 and who are in other words celebrating their first Christmas. The winner will be selected from the photographic entries by judges who will be representing the prize
sponsors. Entry photos will be selected at the discretion of the PE Express Editor, to be published in the runup to the finals. Not all the entries will be published in the PE Express. Entry photos will also be published on the PE Express website. Winners will have to be available between December 1 and 9 for the front-page shoot, which will be done by Pro-Design Photographers. Our first potjie recipe finalist THIS week we publish our first finalist in the PE Express Reader Potjie Recipe competition. Two more finalists will be published in the following two weeks for readers to vote for the winning recipe on Thursday, November 24. The PE Express team will enter the winning recipe into the potjiekos competition at the Willows Challenge which will take place on Saturday, November 26 Not only will the newspaper’s staff members prepare a potjie for the competition, but another huge pot will also be cooked for a charity organisation. Fruit and Veg have donated all the ingredients for the charity pot which will be enough to feed 60 kids. Recipes cannot be entered anymore but 8 recipes have been uploaded onto our website and readers can now vote for the second and third finalist in the potjiekos recipe competition on our website www.pe-express.co.za. The final two finalists will be published in next week’s edition (November 23). After that voting will take place until 5pm on Thursday, November 24 to select the winning recipe. The entrant of the overall-winning recipe will win a R500 Sunridge Superspar voucher. One of those who have voted on the website

Enough lamb/mutton for 8 people (either cubes or chops) 8 Tablespoons cooking oil 4 Onions 8 small potatoes 8 carrots Mixed vegetables of your choice 1 Teaspoon garlic (optional) 750 ml Pineapple juice (Liquifruit) 3 Tablespoons brown sugar 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind Cake flour 125 ml tomato puree 6 Tablespoons brown vinegar 4 Tablespoons Soya sauce 1 teaspoon Curry powder Salt and pepper as you like
Method: Fry onions in cooking oil in potjiekos pot. Take out and keep aside. Cover meat with cake flour and fry in pot. Add fried onions on top of meat. Mix all the other ingredients with pineapple juice and add to meat. No water to be added. Simmer for 45 minutes and add the small potatoes and carrots. Simmer for another 30 min and add the mixed vegetables. Simmer until all the vegetables are done. You may add 2 tablespoons flour if the potjie is too saucy. Serve on rice.

Christmas Celebration at new Richmond Hill venue A CHRISTMAS Celebration show will be held at the brand-new Richmond Hill venue, Artuo Teatro. The event is a collaboration between Doxa Deo Church and Summerwood Primary School and will feature contemporary arrangements of all-time favourite Christmas songs, including “When a Child is Born”, “Mary’s Boy Child”, “Christmas isn’t Christmas”, “Somerkersfees”, and “Sonneblom uit Bethlehem”. It will be directed by Nagel Myburgh and Hanlie Young. The Summerwood Primary School choir will perform on the evening together with a number of accomplished Port Elizabeth musicians.

Learn about Bonsais at annual show IF you enjoy the smaller things in life, why not learn the exiting art of Bonsai? The annual Eastern Province Bonsai show will run from November 26 to 27 at the Walmer Town Hall, where more than 120 beautiful trees will be on display. A wide variety of indigenous and exotic trees will be there to entice vistitors. No two trees are the same, so there will be wonderful styles and settings – something to suit everyone. Five demos, each with different speakers and topics, will be held on the Saturday at 11am, 12.30pm and at 2.30pm and again on Sunday at 11am and 12.30pm. In the Orient, Bonsai are passed down from
father to son and the trees live for many years, being carefully tendered. So don’t just dig up that unwanted tree and throw it away – it might be suitable to nurture into a Bonsai tree. The art of Bonsai is thousands of years old, but it is continually changing. The doors open at 9am on the Saturday and Sunday until 5pm on the Saturday, and 4pm on the Sunday. There will also be lovely trees, pots, tools wire and fertilizer on sale, with advice available – free of charge. The entrance fee is R10 for adults and R5 for children under 12. EXPRESSION OF INTEREST BY COMMUNITY GROUPS OR ENTITIES: PARTICIPATION IN ECOTOURISM DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN NATURE RESERVES (C/E 2849) 1. Purpose The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (the NMBM) hereby invites expressions of interests from community groups or entities (community trusts, cooperatives, cooperatives and other companies, community trusts and other companies, other companies or joint ventures (JVs) between community trusts and cooperatives, cooperatives and other companies, community trusts and other companies, or community trusts, cooperatives, and other companies) to participate in developments within specific NMBM nature reserves. 2. A large percentage of this area is currently being managed by the NMBM as 11 nature reserves. Surrounding several of these reserves are rural communities living in adverse poverty. The NMBM has identified an opportunity for using this biodiversity economy to create potential avenues for economic development in these communities. The Executive Mayoral Committee approved the development of the NMBM’s Nature Reserves on 29 March 2008 (19/3/1/1/1) (Agenda p. 17) (Minute No. 23/2008). Plans for upgrading and developing a number of these reserves, i.e. Settlers Park (including Dodds Farm, Victoria Park and St George’s Park), Maitlands, Van Stadens, Van der Kemp’s Kloof and Springs Nature Reserves, are currently under way. With the right development, these reserves have the potential to attract increased tourism. 3. Scope of work 3.1 In line with the above Executive Mayoral Committee resolution, the NMBM invites expressions of interest from community groups or entities to participate in the following three (3) nature reserves with associated public open spaces: 3.1.1 Van Der Kemp’s Kloof Nature Reserve 3.1.2 Swartkops and Aloes Nature Reserves The abovementioned nature reserves are to be developed through a collaborative venture, comprising the NMBM, private developers (with vast experience in the Ecotourism Sector), the community and South African development finance Institutions, such as DBSA, IDC and ECDC. Pheiffer (Walmer Cycling Club) narrowly beat Viljoen (MecerNMMU) in a thrilling sprint last year to take his first major victory following a decade-long absence from the sport. He said he was looking forward to a rematch with the 27-year-old former Eastern Province and national student champion. “Conrad’s also been off the bike for a while and is making his comeback, so I’m sure he’s going to come out with all guns blazing.”

Originally scheduled for October 2, she said the organisers had decided to postpone the event due to dangerously wet and windy conditions on the day. “Although the new closing date for entries is November 17, there will be no penalties for late entries because of the postponement.” Registration, where late entries will be accepted, is at the stadium clubhouse on Saturday, November 19, between 1pm and 3pm. THE Varsity College MTB Relay Challenge and Kids’ mountain bike race will be part of the activities at the Willows Challenge, powered by Die Burger and Bay FM on November 26. Schools, friends and sporting groups are challenged to join in on the fun. In order to raise as much money as possible for CHOC, a portion of the entry fee for the kids’ mountain bike race will go towards the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa.
“We will run a competition for the child who provides the most referrals,” said Adele Voges of Varsity College. By entering online and referring your friends, you can stand a chance to win fantastic prizes, she added. The kids’ MTB race entrance fee is R50 per person and starts from 10am opposite the tennis court near the main gate of the Willows, targeting age groups from u/8, which will do a distance of 2.5km. The u/10 and u/12
groups will do a distance of 5km over a terrain of grass, tar and a little gravel. The cost of the Varsity College MTB 3-hour Relay Challenge for teams of 2 or 3 persons is R200 per team. The winners will be the team with the most laps in a given period and the fastest last lap. pecting the worst. Little did they know it would be the worst – not for their team but the opposition. In just 18 overs the Aussies would be all out for a paltry 47! Stranger still, top scorer would be last man in Nathan Lyon (14). When Lyon came to the wicket, the wearers of the Baggy Green Caps were 21 for 9! Second-top scorer would be another bowler, Peter Siddle, with 12! Then as mysteriously as it had fled, cricket’s sanity returned. With little trouble, Graeme Smith (101 not out) and Hashim Amla (112), batting with skilful aggression, knocked off the required 238 in fine style. It was the stuff of legends. It made you shake your head in wonder, shiver with pride. Not just for the victory, but for what the preceding two-and-a-half days said about the game of cricket. This series started with the clouds of yet another corruption scandal hanging over the sport. So much dirt has been attached to cricket – the so-called Gentlemen’s Game – lately. Yet, despite all the bluster and promises by the International Cricket Council and national cricket bodies, little is being done to stop the bribery and corruption bedevilling the sport. The Pakistani players given jail sentences in Britain is a healthy sign. But it should be remembered the culprits were exposed not by the ICC but journalists doing the work for the governing body. The sport will not be safe from the likes of these manipulators, happy to sell their souls for the lure of ill-gotten gain, until the ICC acts with greater decisiveness and urgency. Then – and only then – will cricket-lovers once more be able to point with pride to a game that has spawned so many legendary figures and names.
As to how many grey hairs collectively the more senior members of the Aussie team sprouted during the two-and-a-half day duration of the match, it’s understood now to have become a classified secret of the Oz Department of Internal Affairs. Didn’t anybody tell the collective 22 taking part in the match that it was a FIVE-day test? There was the Timeless Test in the late 30’s. The match was eventually abandoned. Music hall comedians of the time used to joke that the two countries involved, South Africa and England, forgot about Hitler and the war they had to fight. Now at the other end of the scale, we have the “Newlands’ Shorty” – a gale force wind that lasted little more than 20 hours that’s written a completely new chapter into the annals of cricket. An unconfirmed report says that one intrepid member of the visiting team was heard to remark to sternly frowning skipper Michael Clarke: “Crikey, mate, I know the wind’s supposed to blow a bit here. But, mate, no one warned us it’d be a bloody monsoon!” Ah well, whichever way you look at it, it was an epoch-making event. Take a quick look through the scorecard. At first it’s cricket as normally played: Australia scoring a modest 214 after losing the toss, and Clarke, in a masterly innings of 151, looking as though he’s on another planet compared to his teammates. Then SA, almost literally while you were away from the telly getting your second beer, are all out for 98 in 24.3 overs. “Here we go again,” neighbours were cynically calling to each other across their dividing hedges, ex-

The rules of Formula 1 are painstakingly crafted and written, so as to make the sport what it is and to ensure that it is run as efficiently as possible. There is, however, one unwritten rule that all teams, drivers and fans religiously subscribe to – always expect the unexpected in Formula 1. The penultimate race of the year in Abu Dhabi wasn’t exactly the most thrilling of races we have experienced so far this season. It did, however, dish up a surprise that few would have seen coming. A sensational, record-equalling, pole position on Saturday by Sebastian Vettel would be the only glory that the 24-year-old double world champion would experience on the Yas Marina circuit, at least as far as 2012 is concerned. A tremendous start from pole position saw the Red Bull driver lead into turn one untroubled, but what the Red Bull team describe as an “instantaneous loss of pressure” on the right rear tyre pitched Vettel onto the grass

World champ wins Cirrus 10km swim Water Sports World

Ocean Series Sunday 2010 WORLD 10km open water swimming champion, Martina Grimaldi, won Sunday’s Cirrus Bio-Ears Swim Challenge Series 10km swim in a very fast 1hr 56min at Marina Martinique. The much expected three-way tussle between the Italian, SA Olympian Natalie Du Toit and PE’s Jessica Roux didn’t materialise, as Du Toit opted for the 5km swim instead. Roux finished second in one of her fastest times of the season, 2hr 3min, some 7 minutes faster than her time set last month at the same venue. Grimaldi, who was a silver medallist at this year’s World Championships, recently won the London Olympics Test Event in London, winning in a time of 2hr 2min, highlighting that Roux is progressing very well into a top international 10km swimmer. Du Toit, South Africa’s most accomplished swimmer, won the 5km swim in a time of 1hr 1min, ahead of Wayne (1hr 3min) and Jason Jones (1hr 5min). Second in the ladies was Tammy Geyer with Rebecca Newman in third. In the 3km swim it was Daniel Jones who won from Megan van Wyk and Veruschka Jordaan. Whilst JC van Wyk took the honours in the 1km swim from Erika Scheepers and Ryan Harris. In the Kids’ 500m race it was Orion Heinze from Matthew Roux and Dillon Wooding whilst Roland van Wyk claimed the Bank-toBank title from Tristan Zoetmulder and JanDaniel Cilliers. A possible first was set in the 1km swim when Kouga Swim Club coach, Brenton Williams, completed the swim doing butterfly. Williams will now attempt to do the same at Sunday’s Dis-Chem 2km Ocean Swim at Hobie Beach. “I want to try to become the first person to swim butterfly at all the major swim races in South Africa, including the Ocean

Night Trail Run through conservation estate RUNNING in Nelson Mandela Bay takes on a new dimension with one of the first night runs through a nature reserve. “Following the success of the Business Night Relay, we’re looking forward to heading into the bush for an equally exciting trail run series,” said Mike Zoetmulder of Zports Trail Runs, which is organising the fun run. It will be run on Thursday, December 8, through the 3 000 hectare Hopewell Conservation Estate, a new private game reserve near the Wedgewood Golf Course on the outskirts
of Port Elizabeth. “This is the day before schools close, and at the start of a busy holiday season. We expect a big turnout,” said Zoetmulder. Races to be staged include a 15 kilometre individual night trail run, a 15 kilometre threeperson relay, and a five kilometre kids bush run. The kids bush run starts at five thirty in the afternoon, and the night trail at seven thirty, just after sunset. The moon will be nearly full. “This will be followed by a braai and fellow-
ship – runners are encouraged to bring the whole family. They can relax, take a stroll and see if they can spot the eland calves, mountain zebra, springbok, hartebeest or other game,” said Brian Corrigan of Hopewell Conservation Estate.
