Breakthrough in spate of house robberies CLARISSA VENTER POLICE believe they have achieved a great breakthrough in combating the recent spate of house robberies all over the metro after the arrest of four suspects. The four men, who are believed to be members of a syndicate, are also being investigated for various other criminal activities in addition to the house robberies. Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, police spokesperson, said the suspects appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate Court this past Monday to apply for bail. Van Rensburg added it is believed that they work for a syndicate and follow a specific modus operandi. “They gain entry to the premises under false pretences and then overpower whoever they need to in order to get their hands on the goods.” Their arrest follows a house robbery at 9am on August 22 in Westering. The house robbery was reported to the Kabega Park Police Station. Later the same day, officers received information that people were trying to sell suspected stolen goods in Cape Road close to the Five Ways Spar. “The two people who were allegedly trying to buy the goods, were also arrested and appeared in court. They were each released on R1 000 bail,” said Van Rensburg. The detectives also recovered the stolen goods. “After this more information came to light that the suspects were making use of Bed and Breakfast estab-

lishments from where they allegedly operate. “They will book the accommodation in advance and pay with cash upfront. They meet in the rooms but do not sleep there.” Van Rensburg added these suspects did not only make use of Bed and Breakfasts, but they also operated from various hotels in the city. “I cannot mention any specific hotels as they have been operating throughout the entire city.” Again the police followed up further leads and eventually the four men were apprehended. “They were positively linked to the robbery in Westering. According to Janse van Rensburg, it is alleged that the same suspects can also be linked to house robbery cases in the Humewood, Mount Road, Walmer and Kabega Park policing areas. According to the investigating officer these suspects are allegedly also involved in other crimes including motorvehicle theft and burglaries. The police believe the robbers are contacted by people who basically “place an order” for the goods they want. The robbers would then set out on their robbery missions. “We aim to arrest the people who are buying these goods because if there is no demand, there will be no syndicate. “We are expecting to make more arrests soon.” The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta, applauded Kabega Park detectives, who worked around the clock to apprehend the suspects. Celiwa said, “We shall continual-

ly, without fail, urge our communities and second-hand dealers to refrain from buying stolen goods.

It cannot be a normal situation that while some people work very hard to better their lives, others

would assume that they can easily get what does not rightfully belong to them.”

Dagwoods robbed . . . again! CLARISSA VENTER THE popular Dagwoods Pub and Diner in Mill Park was robbed for a fourth time in a time span of only four months. Three armed robbers overpowered the senior manager of the restaurant, Glenn Taylor, just before 9am on Friday, August 26. He was attacked by the men, one armed with a knife and the other two both with firearms. Taylor was sprayed with pepperspray and the owner, Graig Conroy, who was with Taylor at the time, was hit in the face with a full bottle of wine. According to Shaun Lindsey, who is the general manager, a laptop, a cell phone, an undisclosed amount of cash and a substantial amount of expensive alcohol was stolen. The suspects also fled in a Dagwoods’ van and apparently jumped into a white taxi and fled after abandoning the vehicle in Sydenham, which the police found later the same day.

This is the fourth robbery in four consecutive months. The diner was first targeted in April. According to the Atlas Weekly Crime Newsletter, Conroy reported that these were the same suspects who had robbed him during a previous incident in July. Lindsey said Taylor was in the shop during all four robberies. “Glenn and Graig are both fine. Graig is going on leave on Monday as he needs a bit of a holiday though.” He added during each robbery they were targeted shortly after opening up shop in the morning. “The suspects know exactly what they want and they are very professional. The fact that we also use the back door while opening the restaurant is another concern because no one can see what is happening in the enclosed alley. Lindsey said they have now appointed security guards to keep an eye 24 hours a day and that a security company will be present at all times when they open and close the restaurant. Earlier police spokesperson, Alwin Labans, said they were following up leads.

VERA SCHOEMAN The end of an era and a sad day for Bushy Park Farm Dairy’s 71 workers who recently went to work for the very last time. The dairy on the Seaview Road oficially closed its doors after rumours to this effect have been doing the rounds since May. “We are just wrapping up the last details. It’s an emotional affair for all of us. “Some of the people have found other employment, but most of them haven’t. I dont have any plans yet,” said Mr Puffer Hartzenberg, managing trustee. According to him the milk cows have already been relocated to their new home near Louis Trichardt.

They will be supplying milk to Limpopo Dairies. Hartzenberg said in an earlier interview that rising costs, especially that of electricity, water and taxes, gradually killed the dairy. They also had to compete with prices of state-subsidised dairies in East London. “I can honestly say that we’ve done everything possible to prevent this predicament, but it simply wasn’t possible. “We put the process on hold until it became impossible.” After news of the probable shut down, members of the public started a Facebook group in support of the dairy, but to no effect. Hartzenberg said some of the beef cattle will be kept on the farm.

Unlawful rubbish dumping in the Nelson Mandela Metro is not due to a dysfunctional refuse management process, but is symptomatic of a number of shortfalls, a recent study showed. The study found that people use illegal dumping sites not only for building rubble, but also for domestic refuse. To prevent this, Riaan le Roux, who conducted the study, recommended at a recent meeting of the public health committee, that construction companies, contracted by the municipality, must show receipts of having dumped building rubble at legitimate dumping sites. If they are unable to show such receipts, the municipality must withold payment for their services. Other suggestions by Le Roux include a cen-

tralised unit within the directorate of public health focusing on illicit refuse-dumping. The study was done to determine the cause of unlawful refuse-dumping and to find ways to put corrective measures in place. Although the implementation of the longterm strategy will cost R115 million, there is a short-term plan which can be implemented immediately. This strategy includes an awareness campaign and frequent domestic refuse removal from poorer areas. Le Roux said the police and the metro’s traffic and security officials should also assist with monitoring and preventing unlawful refuse-dumping. The municipality’s 600 closed circuit cameras could also be put to better use to prevent illicit dumping. The current fine of R500 for unlawful refuse-dumping is not sufficient as deterrent and should be raised to R2 000, said Le Roux. All sugggestions were approved.

Passion to inspire other women produces book ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL “THE power of honesty, blessings and positive thinking does know your name.” These are words to live by for Ashere-Dee Adams, who has just founded an empowerment company for women, called Butterfly Diva. This forms part of this one woman’s passion to help other women live life to the fullest. With the launch of her company she also wrote a pocket-size inspirational book called Inspirational Delights to Embrace Yourself. After her son fell ill she resigned from her job and became a full-time mom. “The process of being a full-time mom brought with it a transformation in me whereby I had to look at myself candidly, my future and my life as a mother and wife. As well as having to realise my dream. My passion haunted me day and night and I finally mustered up the courage to

register my company in October 2010 and the name Butterfly Diva was born.” Butterfly Diva, she says, is about assisting other women, in a sisterly fashion, to look at life differently and to learn how to embrace the women they were born to be. Because she had limited resources, Adams started out using social networking outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and blogging to spread her message through inspirational articles. “Then with this nagging desire to display my love for creative writing and provide women with tangible ways to work on themselves – a pocket-size booklet about things that helped me get to the space I am now, Inspirational Delights to Embrace Yourself, came to life.” With minimal resources she edited, designed and self-published the book. “The overall message of my book is that everyone has the capacity to live her life to the fullest with love, bliss and fullness. ‘A Pocketful of Rhymes’ at St George’s Preparatory ST GEORGE’S Preparatory School is very excited about their upcoming musical revue, A Pocketful of Rhymes, which will be held from September 14 to 17. The show boasts an award-winning production team with Marlene Pieterse as director, Donna McLaggan as choreographer (with Sianbeth Hitchner assisting), Julia de Meillon – the schools’ music department head – as musical director and Jenny Maltby, art teacher, seeing to the set. This youthful cast consists of 19 senior primary pupils as well as their entire junior primary compliment, making up a cast of approximately 150 pupils. A further ten senior primary pupils will operate as backstage assistants. Performances take place at 11am and 6.30pm daily.

The weekday morning performances are specifically aimed at accommodating large groups from the local and surrounding schools. The show will take place in the school’s Jan Immelman hall. Two weeks to go to Northern Arts Festival CORRESPONDENT IT’s the time of year again for the annual Northern Arts Festival, which runs from September 22-25 at the Varsvlei Commonage in Sanctor, will feature an exciting line-up of emerging and established artists. “With only two weeks remaining to the fifth annual Northern Arts Festival, the organizers and participants are hard at work to make this event the most successful ever,” said Northern Arts Festival director Billy Paulson. The line-up features many new and well-known artists and groups to entertain the crowds. Popular dance crew Spectrum, smooth-voiced Gino SoulSinger as well as a host of others will be delivering their very best, while Gino Lee, who has been scooping awards and wowing audi-ences, is certain to get the feet tapping. The ever-green artist Dawnay, whose number one hit ‘You Touch Me’ is one of the most popular party tracks in recent years, will take to the main stage. There’ll also be many arts and crafts stalls, while various other stands will be sell-

ing tasty food and a variety of products. “This year, in commemoration of the festival’s fifth year, five community-based organisations will be setting up stands in order to highlight the services which they offer as well as to sell products in order to raise much-needed funds. These organizations are the Association for People with Disabilities (APD), the POPS Foundation, the Bethelsdorp Heritage Trust, Alcoholics Anonymous and the Cleary Park Cheshire Homes,” Paulson explained. Paulson will, as in previous years, host a special gala dinner on September 22, which is by invitation only. The next day sees the flaghoisting ceremony at Varsvlei. This will be performed by the South African National Defence Force, who will also be responsible for several static displays. Over the course of the weekend the SAPS, EMS and Fire Department will stage mock scenes which will demonstrate their ability to deal with any situation, and for the first time during the festival a team from Correctional Services will also stage a display. A little Miss Northern Areas Festival pageant is also being arranged, and prospective entrants can contact Mo-

The jam-packed weekend programme will culminate in a gospel extravaganza on the Sunday, where popular artists such as Benny Koen, will be performing some favourite gospel classics. Notices will be circulated shortly amongst the residents in the areas surrounding Varsvlei. A team of volunteers is being trained to assist with keeping the area in pristine condition, and a security plan has been drawn up whereby the SAPS, Sector Policing and two security companies will ensure the safety of visitors and residents. “With such a wide variety of activities on offer, this year’s Nothern Arts Festival is definitely worth being noted in everyone’s diary. Afri-Save Marathon a success yet again.

Hundreds of people took part in the 42.2km marathon on Saturday 3 September 2011 as well as the 10km and 5km fun run. The 42.2km Afri-Save Marathon was organised in association with the Muirite Striders Club and is seen as one of the toughest runs in the region.

PROUD parents in and around the Bay must hurry because today is the closing date for entries for the 2011 Cupcake Baby and Toddler Competition. This competition forms part of the “Spring is in the air” cakeshow that takes place this weekend on September 9 at the Londt Park Sports Club in Ralston Road. Parents and relatives will be able to enter their babies and toddlers in four categories from 0 to 6 months, 7 to 12 months, 13 to 18 months, 19 months to 25 months and 25 months to three years. All they need to do is to enter by doing the compulsory photographic session, run by Pro Design Photographers, at 26 Joans Way, Westering from 9am today to 6pm. Entry fee is R50 per child. A standard fee of R80 for two

or R100 for four Jumbo size photos will be charged. Only Pro Design Photography entries will be accepted. The photos of those who are chosen as finalists of the 2011 Cupcake Baby and Toddler Competition will be showcased during the entire cakeshow. The winners will be announced on Saturday September, 17. Bakers, sugar artists and cake decorators will showcase their sweet creations for the cakeshow that is hosted in aid of charity. The beneficiaries of the show are the Liebenhaus Children’s Home and the Dolphin Coast branch of the South African Cake Decorators’ Guild (SACDG). “The best of the best work will be on display and a replica of Kate and William’s royal wedding cake that took three weeks to complete will also be showcased,” said Belinda Kretzmann from the SACDG. She added that seven women worked day and night to finish

the replica. On Saturday morning the day kicks off at 6am with a 12hour line-dance marathon with the popular local linedance group, Slappin’ Leather. PE Express Sport New EP Cricket coach appointed EASTERN Province Cricket recently announced the appointment of Christo Esau as the coach for the EP provincial team. Christo will take over the reins from Piet Botha, who was recently appointed as the Chevrolet Warriors coach. Esau has been employed by EP Cricket since 2000 and has been coaching for over 10 years. He attended Astra Primary School, Bertram High School and Grey High School. In Christo Esau 2000 Christo received his National Diploma in Sports Administration from the former PE Technikon. A keen cricketer himself he has played cricket at various levels, including representing the Eastern Province B team in 2000/2001, but found his true calling in the coaching department. He has coached numerous teams, including the EP under-15 and under19 team, EP Academy and also man-

TANYA VAN ZYL THE St Dominic’s Priory High School recently made history in their school when they formed the school’s first rugby team. The school offer sporting codes only such as hockey, athletics, cricket, soccer, swimming and waterpolo. But some of the boys felt the need to play some rugby and so The Saints rugby team was formed. Only 11 boys joined The Saints rugby team, meaning there were not enough players to fill a rugby team. So Priory was determined to find more players. “We approached St George’s College and asked them to join in on the rugby action,” Laura Gillies, spokesperson of Priory, said.

Whilst awaiting a reply from St George’s, the Priory Sevens team took on a team from DF Malherbe High School in a warm-up match. Priory lost this match with 27 - 0. On a Saturday afternoon Priory practice session, the boys were pleasantly surprised when 7 boys from St George’s showed up to join The Saints rugby team. “We are still looking to build onto our team, but The Saints will look at taking on any obstacle that wishes to meet us!” Gillies said. In the meantime, the Saints played Grey High School’s u/15E team and lost 26-22, they lost 22-12 to their u/15D/E team and won with 21-17 to the same team on a different occasion. According to coach, Clinton Edwards, the idea is next year to approach non-traditional schools such as Theodor Herzl, Brylin and St Marks – who do not offer rugby as sport – to join them in playing rugby.

Talking F1: ‘The Cathedral of Speed’ NATALIE LE CLUE IT is the fastest track with the most history, where Formula 1 history comes to life. It can only be the Autodromo di Monza. It may not be the most physically demanding racing circuit on the calendar; but it is one of the most passionate racing venues in the world. As such, Monza makes its appearance as the 13th round of the 2011 championship. As the circuit with the highest average speed of the season and with 83% of the lap spent at full throttle, engine performance becomes ever more important for qualifying and the race. The other major focus falls

on aerodynamic efficiency. The low level of downforce required around Monza is so unique that it prompts teams to bring a specially designed, low-downforce, rear wing to the Italian GP. Given the low levels of rear downforce on the cars it invariably means that while a decent straight line speed will be achieved the stability of the car, particularly under acceleration, is far less than normal. This makes corners such as Parabolica (turn eleven) all the more treacherous, as getting on the throttle just a split second too early can result in a trip through the gravel trap. The Drag Reduction System is expected to create its own fireworks this weekend. It may very well be a

return to the famous ‘slipstreamer’ races of the past as the FIA has allocated two separate DRS zones for the Italian grand prix. The first will be along the ‘back straight’ into the Variante Ascari chicane (turn eight) with the second of the two zones being situated on the start/finish straight. Undoubtedly the following car will be afforded with a big advantage and could, possibly, shape the outcome of the race. “The first zone’s going to be interesting because it’s always been very tough to challenge for position under braking for Ascari – the track’s pretty narrow and it’s a fast entry – so I’ll be really interested to see how well DRS will work into that corner. thing which Main has wanted to do since taking up competitive swimming at the tender age of 6 years old. At the time of writing, Main is waiting at Dover Harbour (England) for the right weather conditions before setting off on this marathon swim which he’ll be hoping to complete in under 9 hours. He aims to break the South African record of 8 hours 58 minutes set by Barend Nortje. Ocean Racing Series entries open Registration for Season 7 of the Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series (ORS) is now open ahead of the Series start on Sunday, October 9. Whether you enjoy walking along the beach, a 5km fun run or the ocean swims, the Ocean Racing Series offers regular fun and healthy activity. WHAT is believed to be only South Africa’s second urban run, the Herald Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run in September, is creating quite a stir around town. It should see hundreds of participants trudging the streets of the CDB as they negotiate urban obstacles in what promises to be one of the most exciting foot races the city has ever seen. Covering a distance of 12km through some of the cities most historic parts, the Urban Run includes challenges such as the Mawethu Civils pipe crawl, the Good Year ‘Tyred Out’ obstacle, Boston City Campus’ Corporate Staircase, Xtreme Projects treble challenge, MBDA’s traffic challenge, the assault on Fort Frederick, survival through the urban oasis of Settlers Park and Security Technology Worx’s electric fence. Open to individuals or teams of three, the Urban Run is all about challenging oneself whilst helping others, not only during the event but throughout 2012 as all proceeds from the Urban Run will go towards the school fees of the disadvantaged children of the Door of Hope children’s home in Sydenham. IT WAS a week to remember. Dripping with emotion, you might say. The Springboks off to defend their Rugby World Cup title in New Zealand, with the best wishes of the country’s 50 million people. Sports Minister, Fikile Mabalula, warned them not to return without the Webb Ellis Cup. Did that mean if unsuccessful they should stay put and swell the Kiwi population by another 30? At home some thrilling Currie Cup rugby, with the Lions putting welcome daylight between themselves and the rest with a grinding win against the Pumas; WP clinging to second spot in a thriller against Griquas in Kimberley (never an easy task in the Land of the Big Hole), and the Sharks, needing to stay closely in touch, coming away with a 39 - 27 win against the Bulls at Loftus, but without a bonus point. Thus Lions continue to ride high on 32 points, followed by WP (27) and Sharks (26). Exciting stuff! The best news of the week, however, came not from the Currie Cup or the Boks in NZ, but from what used to be called “die ou Transvaal”. There, this column’s 007 dug out the week’s best story. Giving rugby’s political pessimists a swift kick in the rear, he revealed that transformation in the Golden Lions club scene is alive and well, even if hardly a line of this scoop has been published in the country’s press. He cables that Tirfu Raiders, the only preunity Transvaal Independent RFU club competing at top level, has made it into the Predator final, after a thrilling last-minute win over Potchefstroom University, and will meet Johannesburg University in the final.

Raiders are based in the Bill Jardine Stadium in Bosmont and draw their players from Soweto, Riverlea and the Alberton-Germiston area. Its players are 10 percent white, 42 percent African, 47 Coloured and four percent Indian. Making a provincial final is wonderful news for a club that has no sponsor, and whose members play rugby first and foremost for the love of it. Put on your bifocals and delight in the bright side for once. No doubt you’re already fretting over the Bok’s opening match against Wales in Wellington on Sunday. Take heart – Wynand Claassens’ team had a stirring win there in 1981. Can we win the World Cup? We’re certainly not the favourites but anything is possible in such an extensive examination of a country’s rugby skills, and pride that springs from a deep-seated desire for success. Meanwhile here are some RWC facts you may not know. The first tournament in 1987 was won by NZ, beating France 29 - 9 in the final. SA played for the first time in 1995, winning the final against the All Blacks 15 - 12. The Boks won their second RW Cup in 2007, beating England 15 - 6. Only Australia has also won two World Cups. Our oldest player in a final is Os du Randt (2007 – 35); the youngest Francois Steyn (2007 – 20). SA’s biggest win was 72 - 6 v Uruguay in 2003. Volkswagen Group SA turns 60 EXPRESS REPORTER ON August 31 sixty years ago, the first Volkswagen Beetle was produced in Uitenhage. Since then, VWSA has produced over 2.8 million vehicles, been awarded numerous export orders by its parent company, won a number of local and international awards and currently produces South Africa’s two top-selling passenger vehicles. Volkswagen Group South Africa Managing Director, David Powels, said the Company’s come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1946 with the establishment of South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors (SAMAD), which produced 12 Studebakers a day, to the world class factory it is today – producing an average of 600 vehicles daily. Powels said the original management, in the form of SAMAD’s first MD, Melville Steele Brooks and Chairman, Baron Klaus von Oertzen, could not have predicted how Volkswagen would grow from a small Company with big dreams, and prosper over the next 60 years – not only building Volkswagens and Audis, but also Austins, Volvo’s and Jeeps. Since its introduction in 1951 until the end of production in 1979, 290 000 of the iconic Bee-

tles were sold in South Africa. For 11 of those 28 years, it was the top-selling vehicle in the country. Another proudly South African car, the Golf 1, was launched in 1979, and until the end of its life cycle at the end of 2009, 517 384 A1 Golfs had rolled off the production line in Uitenhage.These humble cars became giants in the motoring world, and would define generations of South Africans. Volkswagen’s advertising campaigns over the years also speak volumes. Who could forget the famous “Red, Yellow, Blue Citi Golf” TV campaigns, or the aerial views of thousands of its staff and another of VW vehicles - sprawled out in the shape of the company logo - in the “People’s Cars” television ads, or of the father proudly handing over the keys to his beloved Beetle to his son? Not only has it been producing “People’s Cars” for six decades, but VWSA also has a proud history of putting people first – from having trained and qualified the country’s first Black artisans in the 1980’s to providing continuous training to its staff, suppliers and dealers today. Currently in SA, a 5 000-strong workforce produces about 600 Polo Vivo’s and Polo’s – the country’s two top-selling passenger vehicles – daily. Stylish Citroën DS4 arrives CITROËN’S Stylish DS4, which already has a number of important awards to its credit, has arrived in SA. This follows hot on the heels of Citroëns introduction of its sporty DS3 last year, which was a finalist in the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists’ Car of the Year contest. The Citroën’s that carry the DS nameplate are not only renowned for having eyecatching exteriors and stylish interiors, but also for being dynamic to drive. The DS4 was unveiled to the public at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. It combines coupé styling with so-called 2+2 door practicality: the rear doors have handles hidden in the frames and are seamlessly integrated into the flowing lines of the body, giving the appearance of a high stance, but sleek, two-door coupé. Inside there is space for five, with three-full-sized seats in the rear, while another practical feature is a spacious luggage compartment of 370 litres and a host of clever storage solutions. Finely crafted to convey a prestigious presence both inside and out, the DS4 features meticulous detailing from carefully applied chrome touches to the use of top quality materials for the stylish interior, including the finest leather for the seats. The interior features an enveloping driving position with chrome-surround dials focused directly towards the driver’s eye-line. There is also chrome detailing on the air vent surrounds, gear-lever

and centre console, while aluminium pedals, embossed leather door handles and ambient interior lighting are further examples of Citroën’s attention to detail in designing the DS4. Owners can personalise the interior as the DS4 is available with a choice of three leather combinations, including a two-tone option. There is also a number of safety features which is seldom found in a C category car. These include blind spot and tyre pressure monitoring,(optional) static cornering lights, dual-function xenon steering lights that can swivel by up to 150, (optional) intelligent traction control, hill assist, a programmable cruise control and speed limiter as well as a parking space gap measurement system and electric safety brake. The DS4 comes in a choice of petrol and diesel engines.

The same basic 1,6-litre petrol engine, developed in conjunction with the BMW Group, is offered in two power output versions – the normally-aspirated VTi 120 develops 120hp (88kW) and the turbocharged THP 200 puts out 200hp (147kW) – while the HDi 2-litre turbo diesel produces 163hp (120kW) of power and 340kW of torque. The two VTi 120 models – Style and Style Pack – use five-speed manual gearboxes to transmit the power to the front wheels, while the THP 200 and HDi 160 models are fitted with a six-speed manual transmission. All the DS4 models benefit from a 5-year/100 000km service plan and 3-year/100 000 km manufacturer’s warranty, which can be extended to 5-years/100 000km at extra cost. The first challenge kicks off in her hometown of Port Elizabeth on September 18, where the Nashua Toyota rider will be looking to repeat her win of 2009. “PE is my home town and I expect to do well here; after all I cannot disappoint the people here who know me so well.” In fact Schoeman has won the VW Herald

Cycle Tour in PE a whopping 13 times. Entries have now opened and prospective participants can either register for the 100km, 63km or 21km route online at www.cyclelab.co.za or collect your entry form at selected Engen Forecourtsand Wayne Phieffer Cycles in Port Elizabeth. The registration fee for the long route (100km) is R120, medium route (63km) is R100 and short route (21km) is R80. The EDCC starts and ends at Altona Primary School.
