PE EXPRESS REPORTER GET those hiking boots ready because this holiday family hiking trips can be a great adventure. The following hikes will be undertaken during December and January as part of the Metro’s guided trails to the general public. All ages and people of all fitness levels are most welcome. The following hikes can be explored: . Cape Recife Roseate Tern Trail Date: December 22 Time: 9am, trip takes up to three or four hours. Everyone to meet at the entrance/ boom gate to Pine Lodge by 8.45am. . Lady’s Slipper Mountain Hiking Trail Date: December 28 Time: 9am, trip is about three to four hours long. Take the N2 towards Van Staden’s Nature Reserve. Take the turnoff and at the junction turn
right towards Rocklands. Follow the road all the way down and after the railway crossings take the gravel road on the left. Follow it for 250m. Parking will be at the farm on the side of the road or on the farmer’s premises for a small fee. . Sacramento Hiking Trail Date: January 4 Time: 9am, takes three to four hours. Meeting at the Cannon in Schoenmakerskop. Please be informed that this hike should ideally be walked by reasonably fit walkers as it is quite challenging with lots of uphills and steep descents. MOENIE MET DIÉ SKORSIE MORS NIE . . .
Moenie met dié skorsie probeer mors nie. Die bielie van ’n 2.3 kg skorsie is verlede week deur Hendrik Schaefer in sy tuin in Walmer ontdek toe hy blare opgehark het. Schaefer het nie ’n groentetuin nie en die skorsie het sommer op sy eie stoom in die komposhoop gegroei. “Ek het eers gedink dis my kleinseun se sokkerbal. Toe ek dit optel kon ek my oë nie glo nie. Ek het dadelik my vrou geroep en haar oë het omtrent gerek,” het hy gesê. Schaefer het bygevoeg die skorsie is spierwit aan die bin nekant en het byna geen drade nie. “As my vrou hierdie bielie kook, eet ons vir vier dae lank daaraan.” Hier hou hy trots sy bielie langs ’n gewone grootte skorsie vas. Friends publish book about elephants always been with Bosch and it was Bennie who “pushed” her into finally publishing the book. It took her just two weeks to write the story, as she already had all the information and knowledge, but the project started in August this year. All the photos in the book, with the exception of two, were taken by Bosch and her husband. These friends indicated that they would love to do another elephant book, as Bosch already has three more stories she has written (from birth to adulthood). “But we have to test the waters first with the first book, to see how it sells, because publishing a book is very expensive,” Bennie explained. TWO best friends from Port Elizabeth have recently released a book about elephants, hoping the book, Hullo Little Elli, will teach children more about these magnificent giants and to inform them about conservation. Diana Bosch, who wrote the book, and Jennifer Bennie, publisher, saw that there was a gap in the market for little children to learn more about wild animals. “Children are like sponges – they soak up everything you tell them,” Bennie explained. According to her, there is no better person to teach children than Bosch, who was a preprimary teacher for years. “I have always educated through stories and in Hullo Little Elli I’m taking the reader through an elephant’s first week of life,” Bosch said. She tells the story with a bit of drama, “but it has a nice ending!” she assured. Her main aim is for children – and their parents – to learn about conservation and to realise they must take care of the environment, as well as to educate them about animals. Although the book is in story form, Bosch assured that it is also very factual. “I have verified all the facts and I also I know quite a lot about elephants, as my husband was an honorary ranger at the Addo Elephant National Park.” Her husband sadly passed away earlier this year and so it was only fitting for her to dedicate the book to her husband. Collegiate girl wins ‘Elle’ New Fresh Face Talent Search PORT Elizabeth schoolgirl, Chloe Munton, has won the 2012 ELLE New Fresh Face Talent Search, held in partnership with Woolworths. ELLE announced the winner on December 8 at an event held in Cape Town. Seventeen-year-old Munton, from Collegiate Girls High School, will now launch her modeling career with a portfolio and contract from Boss Models, clothes and make-up worth R20 000 from Woolworths and the chance to star in the Woolworths 2012 winter and summer campaigns and a cover shoot for the April 2012 issue of ELLE. “I am overwhelmed, but so excited,” Munton said. “I didn’t expect it at all, all the other girls are so beautiful.” The talented teenager, who also studies art and plays the guitar, has a busy year ahead. “I would like to make modelling my main focus from now on, but I still have to focus on Matric next year,” she added. She entered the competition through ELLE’s website, while she was busy reading fashion
blogs. This is the second year ELLE has partnered with Woolworths in the search for a young woman who embodies beauty, health and a positive spirit. “It is very important for ELLE as a market leader and brand that contextualises current beauty to find new talent in this way. Metro boosts local artists with compilation CD A COMPILATION CD by 14 artists from Nelson Mandela Bay hit the streets of the city and national airwaves recently at a special launch at City Hall. The CD titled Best of Bay volume 1 (BOB vol1) is the first compilation album to be sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and, according to Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile, forms part of the city’s efforts to play catch up with big cities like Johannesburg and eThekwini in nurturing and growing a vibrant music industry. “Up until now, our role and that of the Eastern Cape at large has been to give birth to talent and simply export it to Johannesburg without deriving any significant economic value from it. This has resulted in an undesirable situation in terms of which our capacity to produce and commercialise music has been seriously hampered as a city and province,” said Wayile addressing the media briefing. “The interventions we are making will ensure that young people in our city have alternative ways to earn a living,” said Wayile.

Protecting children against child pornography Child Matters by Dr Crystal Watson CHILD pornography refers to images or films (also known as child abuse images) and, in some cases, writings depicting sexually explicit activities involving a child. Legal definitions generally include sexual images involving prepubescents and pubescent or post-pubescent minors. Most possessors of child pornography who are arrested are found to possess im ages of prepubescent children. Child pornography can be defined as any means of depicting or promoting sexual abuse of a child, including print and/or audio, centered on sex acts or the genital organs of children. Child pornography is among the fastest growing criminal segments on the Internet. According to the United States Department of Justice, at any one time there are estimated to be more than one million pornographic images of children on the Internet, with 200 new images posted daily.
PAEDOPHILES Viewers of child pornography who
are paedophiles are particularly obsessive about collecting, organizing, categorizing, and labelling their child pornography collection according to age, gender, sex act and fantasy. According to FBI agent Ken Lanning, “collecting” pornography does not mean that they merely view pornography, but that they save it, and “it comes to define, fuel, and validate their most cherished sexual fantasies.” The obsessive nature of the collecting and the narrative or thematic links for collections, led to the building of social communities on the internet dedicated to extending these collections. Through these ‘virtual communities’ collectors are able to downgrade the content and abusive nature of the collections, see the children involved as objects rather than people, and their own behaviour as normal: It is an expression of ‘love’ for children rather than abuse.
SEXTING Sexting refers to a recently increasing practice in which people use cell phone messaging to send nude or semi-nude images of themselves to others (such as friends or dating partners). These may be passed along to others or be posted on the Internet. Due to sexting by minors, some teenagers have been charged with possessing and/or distributing child pornography.
HOW IT HARMS CHILDREN While there are many ways that pornography harms children, it must be noted that every child who views pornography will not necessarily be affected and, at worst, traumatized in the same way. The effects of pornography are progressive and addictive for many people. Just as every person who takes a drink does not automatically become an alcoholic, every child who is exposed to pornography does not automatically become a sexual deviant or sex addict. However, since pornography has a new door to the home, school, and library through the Internet, it is important for us to look at the many ways that pornography can potentially harm our children.
S Exposure to pornography threatens to make children victims of sexual violence The Internet has proven a useful tool for paedophiles and sexual predators as they distribute child pornography, engage in sexually explicit conversations with children, and seek victims in chat rooms. The more pornography these individuals access, the higher the risk of their acting out what they see, including sexual assault, rape, and child molestation. According to one study, early exposure (under fourteen years of age) to pornography is related to greater involvement in deviant sexual prac-
tice, particularly rape Slightly more than one-third of the child molesters and rapists in this study claimed to have at least occasionally been incited to commit an offense by exposure to pornography. The habitual consumption of pornography can result in a diminished satisfaction with mild forms of pornography and a correspondingly strong desire for more deviant and violent material. In a study of convicted child molesters, 77 percent of those who molested boys and 87 percent of those who molested girls admitted to the habitual use of pornography in the commission of their crimes. Besides stimulating the perpetrator, pornography facilitates child molestation in several ways.
S Exposure to pornography may incite children to act out sexually against other children Children often imitate what they’ve seen, read, or heard. Studies suggest that exposure to pornography can prompt kids to act out sexually against younger, smaller, and more vulnerable children. Experts in the field of childhood sexual abuse report that any premature sexual activity in children always suggests two possible stimulants: experience and exposure.
S Exposure to pornography interferes with a child’s development and identity. During certain critical periods of
childhood, a child’s brain is being programmed for sexual orientation. Exposure to healthy sexual norms and attitudes during this critical period can result in the child developing a healthy sexual orientation. In contrast, if there is exposure to pornography during this period, sexual deviance may become imprinted on the child’s “hard drive” and become a permanent part of his or her sexual orientation. Pornography often introduces children prematurely to sexual sensations that they are developmentally unprepared to contend with. This awareness of sexual sensation can be confusing and over stimulating for children.

Idols’ Dave releases debut album TANYA VAN ZYL “I ACHIEVED my dream!” David van Vuuren, South African Idols winner of 2011, has always dreamed of making his own music – sharing his heart and soul with the world through his music, and now this dream has turned into reality since recently launching his debut album, Free the Animals. “It is such a blessing – I have achieved my dream and no matter how hard it was to do that, I really can’t complain,” the extremely passionate and humble singer told the PE Express.
He recently visited the Friendly City to promote his new album and visited the PE Express office, taking time out of his hectic schedule to talk about his album, his personal life and his love for music. “God chose me to make music from a young age – it was my destiny. That is why I put my entire heart and soul into music – I literally lose myself in the music . . . it takes me over . . . I can’t control it.” PE Express asked him a few questions. Here is what he had to say:
Name one “disadvantage” of winning Idols? I wouldn’t call it a disadvantage, but it is just very hard to get used to
being away from my family and Jess (Nolan, fiancé) so much.
How involved were you in the making of your album – from the songs that were chosen, to the writing of the songs and even the cover of the album? I was very involved in the album. Myself and Benjy Mudie from Universal Music narrowed it down from 30 songs to seven. Then three additional songs on the album are my own songs and the 11th song is one of my favourites, “Streets of Philadelphia”. (“Lovers fight ‘til the end”, “Troublesome Mind” and “If we don’t fear” are his own songs.) For the second CD of the album (only available through Musica) I
could choose any six songs.
How long did you work on the album, because it was only very recently that you won Idols? We spent endless nights on the album. I had to sing 17 songs and record guitar sounds in just three weeks. I didn’t get much sleep!
“Vincent” is also on the album and this is the song that had us all in tears and the judges gave a standing ovation, thanks to the raw emotion and the passion you put into the song. What is the reason for including this song on the album? I have loved this song since I was a boy. It’s not often that you get a song where every sentence rhymes. It is one of the greatest songs ever written!
If you did not win Idols, how would you have continued with your passion for music? I would have continued with music, no matter what. I will never do anything else with my life than make music.
So you are engaged now. Have you decided on a date yet?
We have been together for four years – since high school. We will get married in October next year, but we’re not yet sure where.
What was the first thing you bought yourself after Idols? I bought myself an Epiphone firebird electric guitar and a fender hot rod valve amp.

Bettie Giliomee It feels like only days ago that we were preparing our last edition of 2010 and here we are again – the last edition of 2011. Whether is was the tough economic climate and the uncertainty of world economics or just plainly one of those years when the pendulum has swung, it feels as if most people I chat to feel that it was a year of more downs than ups. While I certainly have many blessings to count on more than both hands, of which the health and happiness of my loved ones are the most important, I personally can’t wait to start 2012 on a clean slate – that is wiping away all the troubles and regrets of the past year, but being fully equipped for the future, armed with what I learned from all I experienced in 2011. PE Express is also venturing into exciting new projects next year – certainly a lot to look forward too. This ride had too many dips to ever buy another ticket for round number two. To name but a few personal epi-

sodes – the worst one was the passing of my wise, loving, generous and dearest grandfather, simultaneously eva- cuating office and home and moving into unknown territories. On the wider horizon, there was obviously Black Tuesday, a deep pothole in all journalists’ path, the exposure of yet another corrupt head of police, the rape of another woman, the abuse of another child, the murder of another farmer, the retrenchment of another provider, the expropriation of another farm, the closure of another mine, the awarding of another “tender” and the killing of another rhino. Fortunately, however slow and laborious it may be, one moves up the tracks to the next height, where one is left with that needed breather. Just long enough to catch your breath, behold the terrain, throw your hands into the air, and shout: “I like the way you move!”. At the highest point on the ride, the love of my life got aboard the roller coaster, re-aligning the shocks and balancing the wheels. On another of these heights, I was catapulted into a formidable team – The PE Express editorial staff. I found myself in a milieu conducive to creativeness, efficiency, compassion and professionalism. What a high! The editorial staff is profound. Reporters who make a great difference in the lives of ordinary people and institutions, who get involved with the public, who mean what they say. Bettie (always smiling), Tanya (headgirl) and Zeldré (the serious one) all
welcomed and embraced me. . . Reigniting my journalistic passion. Lastly, I wish all our readers a most Blessed Christmas with family, friends and dear ones. Tanya van Zyl I am not a person that wishes time away, because I know time is precious, you can never get it back and it can’t be bought . . . maar liewe hemel . . . can 2011 just end already, please? This year was by far the most challenging, tiresome and busiest in a vee-e-e-e-ry long time. I think I had more stress in 2011 than during my matric exams and going for my driver’s licence combined! But I just can’t put my finger on what it is that made this year so difficult? Was it all that training we received at work through the year; was it changing from one layout programme to a completely different, more challenging (but after a few months a much nicer) one; was it starting a brand-new website for the PE Express and learning the programme to run it at the back-end or was it because dear colleague Zeldré went on maternity leave during our busiest time of the year and I had to figure out how to get to suburbs like West End and Schauderville? Or could it have been that this year
me, my husband and I and colleagues have been more sick than I care to remember; or maybe it was that on December 1 this year we became proud house-owners and at the time of writing this, we’re STILL unpacking boxes? Oh, and not forgetting – in just two words (although I’d like to give him a mouthful!) – Bryce Lawrence . . . Hmmm . . . I think I just realised that 2011 was so hectic, because of ALL OF THE ABOVE! Having said that (and still wanting the year to end), I would not change it for anything, because it has made me richer in so many more ways – knowledge, respect, admiration, new friends and a home. Well, maybe I’d just change one thing: I’d pull a Piet van Zyl on myself, go to New Zealand and tackle that ref. As far as my wish for Christmas goes, I recently received an e-mail and I’m sharing this with you, wishing that you will wish with me for this to come true: I want people who are sick with no cure, to be cured; I want children with no families to be adopted; I want people to never have to worry about food, shelter and heat; and I want peace on earth, goodwill and love for everyone! Merry Christmas everyone.

This week a reader asks the panel’s opinion on setting up a business as a company and whether it would be wise for a trust he is part of to own shares in it. The reader would also like to know what the tax implications of this structure might be. This is a reasonably complex issue with many aspects to consider, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Port Elizabeth. “It’s quite a common planning technique to run one’s business in a company as opposed to a sole proprietorship, where there’s no separation between the individual and the legal entity, or a close corporation.” Du Toit says one of the many reasons for this is that a trust can easily be a shareholder of the company. “Even though a trust can also be a member of a close corporation, there are more restrictive measures to keep in mind in such an instance.” The recently-introduced Companies Act prevents the creation of new close corporations and Du Toit says the reader will have to consider this legislation with respect to a new company too. “Loosely speaking, the benefit of the ownership of assets in a company
ultimately lies with the shareholders.” Although the shares indicate the proportion of a shareholder’s benefit in the assets, the legal and factual ownership is, strictly speaking, vested in the company itself, says Du Toit. “Shareholders can share in the profits of the company, but their liability is limited.” Du Toit says, in many instances, the personal assets of a shareholder will be protected against losses suffered by the company. “There are, however, exceptions to this as in the instance where a shareholder signs a personal suretyship for the debts of the company.” While at first glance it may appear to be fine for a trust to hold shares in the company and own the property, being a shareholder may pose a risk to other assets owned by that shareholder, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in PE. Vermaak says ownership of a property can have far-reaching consequences and one would not necessarily wish to expose a business or business assets to any negative implications. “Separating the business of owning a property from the business

An even more jampacked water sports calendar is planned for 2012 Water Sports World by Michael Zoetmulder AFTER an action-packed 2011, Nelson Mandela Bay sports lovers can expect an even busier water sport programme in 2012. The New Year kicks off with the second half of the Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series starting on January 8 and consisting of 6 race days on alternate Sundays through to March 25. With a record entry, the 70.3 Ironman takes place on January 22 in East London, whilst Marina Martinique plays host to the Cirrus Bio-Ears EP Open-Water Swimming Championships over the last weekend of January. The 88th SPAR Redhouse River Mile takes place on February 19 with entries already open on www.rivermile.co.za. The River Mile will
once again take place on the Sundays River with the Discovery Off-Road Triathlon and Trail Run also taking place on the same weekend. Always a great family weekend, the 2012 River Mile festivities will include a beer garden and lots of entertainment. After a very successful event in 2011, hosted by the Eastern Province Triathlon Association, the SA National Triathlon Championships return to Port Elizabeth on March 17. Traditionally the busiest water sport month on the Nelson Mandela Bay Calendar, April 2012 will be no exception, with Hobie Beach once again promising to be lined with a colourful flotilla of Hobie Cats as the Algoa Bay Yacht Club hosts the 2012 South African National Hobie Cat Championships. Sadly, uncertainty surrounds the 2012 Splash Festival, scheduled for the Easter Weekend of 6th to 9th April, as organisers still need to be appointed by the Metro. April is Ironman month in Nelson Mandela Bay and the 2012 Spec-Savers South African Ironman, the Corporate Ironman Challenge and the Pritt Ironkids all take place on the weekend April 21 and 22. Also featured in

ber would respond when put to the test in the heat of a Formula 1 race. As the new tyre supplier, Pirelli managed to provide entertainment to the hilt. The Australian GP pitlane was littered with drivers desperate to get rid of the crumbling rubber, some after only nine laps of racing. As a spectacle, by the Chinese GP, the Pirelli rubber had accounted for more overtaking manoeuvres in three races than there had been for the entire 2010 season. It was at the Shanghai circuit that Lewis Hamilton, in a stroke of genius, chose to save a set of new tyres for race day. His strategy paid off brilliantly as he waltzed past a struggling Vettel and onto the top step of the podium. Unfortunately for Hamilton, this outstanding strategy call was one of the few highlights of a season that was otherwise beset by crashes, penalties and frustration. While the rest were left to fight amongst themselves Sebastian Vettel racked up consecutive victories in Turkey, Spain and Monaco. The race in Monte Carlo proved the growth that Sebastian Vettel had undergone since becoming an F1 world champ. On severely worn tyres, thanks to a one-stop strategy, he held
Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button at bay, on arguably, the most challenging circuit. Three world champions chasing each other through the sun drenched streets of Monte Carlo, it doesn’t get much better. Jenson Button wouldn’t be denied victory for long. The Canadian GP, interrupted by a two-hour red-flag period, would turn into one of JB’s best victories. Every single circumstance seemed to conspire against the 2009 champion; he found himself in last place twice, required five trips into the pitlane (including a drivethrough penalty) and survived two accidents. Despite this, he fought his way into a position to snatch the race win. What a fine victory from a brilliant driver! To say JB experienced a purple patch in 2011 could be am understatement. His race craft is second to none, decision-making pinpoint-accurate, and his driving - as supremely smooth as ever. While we basked in JB’s great drive, Valencia restored the runaway champion, Vettel’s, dominance over proceedings. A straightforward victory all but confirmed his second title berth. Nevertheless, Fernando Alonso, not to be under-estimated, delivered a determined drive and

capitalised on an error from Red Bull for his first victory of the season at Silverstone. It’s difficult to recall a more determined racing driver than Fernando Alonso. The Ferrari was never a car capable of fighting for victories yet Alonso found himself close to just that on more than one occasion. This is the mark of a great driver. Germany looked as if it would be a walk-over for home-hero Vettel but Lewis Hamilton delivered an exemplary performance to master the ‘Ring. Yet, In Belgium, Italy and Singapore, Vettel hit back and landed the deciding blow that, with one point in Japan, would assure him the distinction of the youngest ever double world champion. In the remaining four races of the season he scored two more victories, one at the brilliant new Indian GP, and claimed the record for most pole positions in a single season (14). Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber returned to something resembling good form with victories in Abu Dhabi and Brazil respectively. The 2011 season had unrivalled exhilaration that will be difficult to match, though it doesn’t mean they won’t try. Bring on 2012!

These Sri Lankans ain’t monkeys This Sporting Life by Michael Shafto YOU learn from your mistakes, it’s said. As you read this today members of the South African cricketing public will no doubt be hoping that six members of Graeme Smith’s Proteas involved in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Centurion, will recall the mistakes they made five years ago in losing the away series to the Sri Lankans 2-0. Specifically, it’s the first Test in Colombo that local supporters will want those six to focus on. The mistakes involved the whole team, of course – but they are mistakes the collective six would much rather forget. The half-dozen involved in those two losing tests, strangely enough, excludes captain Graeme Smith, who was injured at the time – the captaincy going to Ashwell Prince, making him the first player of colour to lead a South African cricket side. The other “sinners” – if they may be so called – were Dale Steyn, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Mark Boucher and Jacques Rudolph. In that first Test South Africa were well and truly slaughtered, courtesy of Muttiah Muralitharan’s brilliant bowling, a match tally of 10 wickets and, who can forget, the world record stand in the first innings by Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara of 624 spread over three days. Needless to say, that
took all the stuffing out of the South Africans. Strangely enough, Dale Steyn – who on the telephone this week said, laughingly, “Hey, don’t let’s go down that road” – emerged from this, only the seventh test of his career, with the relatively creditable figures of 3/129 from 26 overs. South Africa made a better fist of it in the second Test with Sri Lanka sneaking in late on the fifth day by one wicket with Jayawardene slamming yet another superb century. Some who were there described it as one of the finest games of cricket they had seen. The rest of the tour was to have consisted of a limited overs triangular tournament between South Africa, Sri Lanka and India. But it never happened. Black Monday August 13 of that year saw to that! A bomb exploding near the speeding car of the Pakistani High Commissioner as he drove through Colombo, killed four of his bodyguards – and the tour was cancelled. Strangely, some of the local press labelled the South Africans “chickens”. In more recent times, through one thing and another, Sri Lankan cricket has fallen on somewhat hard times, and they come on this tour not the fearsome team they were of yore. But they should not be underestimated. Significantly, the two former skippers, Sangakkara and Jayawardene, are still there, and those career records must surely signal a warning not to take the Sri Lankans lightly. Briefly, those Test records read: Sangakkara: 9167 runs, average 56.93, highest score 287 (27x100, 38x50). Jayawardene: 9954 runs, average 51.3, highest score 375 (29x100, 40x50). Makes impressive reading doesn’t it? A couple of sunny days don’t make a summer, do they? Nonetheless, heads down, Smithy and Co – and let’s see some really great cricket in the coming series. Oh... and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all out there.

Build vintage aeroplane this holiday The Friends of the SAAF Museum Port Elizabeth are reaching out to young aviation enthusiasts and future pilots to join its “Young Wings” Club. “ Young Wings” club members become part of the team which restores and maintains exhibits at the museum, and are also part of the educational programmes run by The Friends of the SAAF museum.
“The reasons why I have joined the Friends are that I have always been fascinated by aviation since a very young age and would like to become a commercial pilot after school. I visit the Museum regularly and I never get bored in doing so,” says Luke Cameron, one of the first youngsters to join the Young Wings club. “I think the museum is a good place to get contacts and advice if you are thinking about joining the aviation business,” he says. The “Young Wings” under the supervision of senior Friends, will not only participate in aircraft restoration, but many other inter-
esting aspects of museum operations such as woodwork, metalwork, event planning and management, aircraft and display maintenance, technical work, aviation art, photography, weekend museum duties, new product development and model aircraft building.
