he PORT Elizabeth Express is once again looking for a baby to grace the front page of our last edition of the year – our Christmas edition on Wednesday, December 21.

Four winners will be chosen – one for each edition of the PE Express, namely Southern, Metro and Northern and PE Express Indaba. Babies must be resident in Port Elizabeth. The PE Express Christmas Baby Competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas. The competition is therefore open to all babies who are younger than one year old on December 25. Competition winners will grace the cover of the edition which is distributed in the area where they live. Entry is free. To enter, parents must send a recent colour jumbo-size photograph of their baby with the completed entry form pasted on the back of the photo. The entry form will be published in next week’s edition of PE Express. Entries must reach our offices in the Ton Vosloo Media Centre, Ivor Benn Close (off William Moffett Ex-

pressway) in Fairview before 10am on Thursday, November 25. No emailed entries will be accepted. Computer printouts or photos larger or smaller than jumbo size will also not be accepted. Parents can enter any photo taken by themselves or any professional photographer. Entry photos need not have a Christmas theme and baby’s face must be nice and visible. The winners will be re-photographed with a Christmas scene and outfits for the front cover by Pro Design Photographers. Special open days have been made available by pageant photographer, Pro Design Photographers, to enable parents to get professional photos of their babies at a much reduced price. The cost will be R80 for two jumbo photos or R100 for four jumbos. Photos will be taken in baby’s own clothes at the Christmas tree and de-corations or the plain studio area. For photos in Christmas clothing more time will be needed and the cost will be R350 for 10 images on disk and one printed entry photo. Special bookings will have to be made for these. No bookings are necessary on these open days, which will be held at Pro Design Photographers studio

at 26 Joans Way in Westering.

The open days are:

T October 26, 27, 28 and 31 October from 1pm to 5pm; T November 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 from 1 to 5pm; T On November 4, 5 and 6 photos will be taken at the Kids & Baby Expo at the William Moffett Lifestyle Centre. There will be a stunning new Christmas theme at Pro Design Photographers’ stall. T November 19 and 20 from 10am to 1pm (will specially be open on Sunday); and T November 21, 22, 23 and24 from 10am to 6pm. The winner will be selected from the photographic entries by judges who will be representing the prize sponsors. Entry photos will be selected at the discretion of the PE Express Editor, to be published in the run-up to the finals. Not all the entries will be published in the PE Express. Winners will have to be available between December 1 and 9 for the frontpage shoot, which will be done by ProDesign Photographers. The bricks and mortar story . . . Contractors put scale and size of construction into perspective WITH construction at the Boardwalk now well underway, contractors have released some facts and figures that put the scale and size of the project into perspective. In the initial excavation phase, more than 115 000 m³ of earth and rock were removed, enough to fill almost 60 Olympic swimming pools. Then 1 424 soil nails and 27 ground anchors were used to secure the excavation sidewalls, while nearly 10 000 m² of waterproofing – enough to cover a rugby field – were laid to ensure the new structures stay dry. More than 32 000 m³ of concrete – enough to fill 60 standard domestic swimming pools – together with more than 5 200 tons of reinforcement and 158 tons of structural steel will be used in the basic structures, with 1 852 columns providing support. In addition more than 37 000 m² of brickwork, enough to cover over three rugby fields, will be used to enclose the structures, and most of that will be hidden behind some 80 000 m² of internal and external plaster, which could provide a rather hard surface for a further eight rugby fields. Once the structures are complete, they will be covered by 4 600 m² of

When all of that is complete, the walls in the public areas will be covered by 10 000 m² of wallpaper and 3 000 m² of shiplap timber cladding, while the floors will be covered by 15 000 m² of tiling, and 14 500 m² of

plush carpeting, enough to cover 14 rugby fields. More than 10 000 new and replacement lights will be fitted to the new buildings, and seven lifts and eight escalators will provide quick and

easy access. Although some areas will be opened to the public over the next few months, the target date for the completion of the project is December 2012.

Pirates and Cosmos PSL match in Mandela Bay Stadium NCEBA DLADLA GOOD news for Eastern Cape football lovers is that they can look forward to two elite Professional Soccer League (PSL) matches in the next week at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Orlando Pirates will take on Jomo Cosmos on Sunday (October 30), while Amakhosi and Maritzburg United will play against each other on November 1. “These are the first of six PSL matches lined up for Nelson Mandela Bay stadium to ensure that local football lovers are entertained up to April 2012,” said Access Management Marketing Manager Buli Ngomane.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba last Friday, Ngomane, better known as Buli G, said this was part of a bigger plan to have a PSL team coming to have its base here in Mandela Bay. “Together with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality we (the stadium management) have noted that there are teams in the PSL who are struggling to find grounds for their home matches. We then thought, opening up for these teams would be a good business decision and cost-effective in the maintenance of the stadium so, we invited Jomo Cosmos and Maritzburg United to come here and test the grounds,” said Ngomane. “With these top PSL matches played in the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium we want to dispel the myth that we are only rugby crazy people. We

love our soccer and this stadium is available to host any event that the people want,” said Ngomane. Learners must be on the alert on their way home from school EXPRESS REPORTER LEARNERS walking home from school should be aware of their surroundings after a primary school learner was robbed on Friday, October 14. The youngster, who was robbed of his cellphone and wallet on his way home, decided to take a short cut through an open area of parkland close to his home in Walmer when he was overpowered. A teenage boy threatened him at knifepoint and demanded his belongings. The suspect grabbed the items and made a run for it. Fortunately, two ADT-security armed response officers who were on shift nearby, saw the young boy running towards them pointing out the suspect who was making his escape across the field towards the Baakens Valley bush. “We immediately followed the suspect and caught up with him about one kilometre

from the scene of the crime. We found the wallet and phone in bushes where he tried to dispose of it during his escape,” officer Lizwe Tloyo said. They arrested the suspect and took him to the Walmer Police Station. The officers took the young victim along to assist him in opening an armed robbery case.

Officer Chris Matina warned learners to be alerted. “Children must remember that they should walk home in groups and never choose routes that will take them through deserted or dangerous areas – no matter how much shorter is will make their journey. It is also wise to keep valuable items out of sight.”

Successful year for Booysen Park Judo Club THE Booysen Park Judo Club is celebrating a successful year with members obtaining a feast of medals at various events. These events include a national judo ranking event the beginning of the year, and the recent Nelson Mandela Bay Judo for Peace event held in New Brighton. Sensei Rodney Clemence, head coach of the club, expressed his gratitude towards the Sapphire Road Primary School, who is closely involved with the club. “Our heartfelt thank you to principal Bruce Damons and the Sapphire Road Primary School for partnering with Booysen Park Judo Club in transporting the judokas to New Brighton at their expense.” The club has over the years built a reputation of hard work and major successes despite struggling with sponsorships. “The quality of judo at the club is

extremely high and a pleasure to watch,” said Melvin Septoe whose child is also a member of the club. “Booysen Park judokas pride themselves in their achievements and it is all thanks to a world class coach, Sensei Rodney Clemence and his coaching team. Their dedication

Church celebrates King James Bible’s 400 years PE EXPRESS CORRESPONDENT THE King James version of the Bible, arguably the most read book of all time, celebrates its 400th year of existence this year, and the occasion was commemorated by the New Appostolic Church community of Port Elizabeth recently. Algoa Park, a congregation in the Arcadia Bishop area, was the host for commemorating the translation of the Bible from Hebrew to English in 1611. The event was opened with a prayer and scripture reading, which included a blind sister reading from a Braille Bible, and there were eight stalls manned by the Sunday School, Youth, Bible Society, Cum Books, NAC shop, Music, Zivikele and the Blind Society. All these stands depicted aspects of the Bible that corresponded with their purpose and each had its own

unique appeal to the audience. Time again for popular Uncle Jumbo’s Christmas Party! CLARISSA VENTER CHRISTMAS is around the corner so parents and their little ones should get themselves ready for the annual Uncle Jumbo’s Christmas Party at the Featherbank Farm on Heatherbank Road in Charlo. The Christmas Party is taking place from November 26 to December 10 (excluding November 27 and 28 and also excluding December 4 and 5). An exciting tractor ride takes the families to Uncle Jumbo’s Farm-style Castle, where Uncle Jumbo will host a party with his friends, Noddy and Big Ears. They will see to it that the children are entertained by singing to the little ones. Noddy and Big Ears will be joined by characters such as Pixie, Tinkerbell and Mr Plod. Further excitement includes Father Christmas handing out presents (which are supplied by the parents in advance) for each child. It is a magical night of fun and laughter for all

Bingo and fun walk to raise funds for little Hannah PE EXPRESS REPORTERS LITTLE Hannah Marshall from Port Elizabeth, who suffers from severe hearing loss and involuntary eye movements, will undergo a cochlear implant operation before the end of the year. PE Express reported last month on how Hannah’s parents Cathrin and Mike are leaving no stone unturned to give her the ability to hear and see. “Hannah has recently been tested and she will need cochlear implants. As they don’t want to wait, she will be receiving her first one before the end of the year,” said Hannah’s mom, Cathrin. “This came to us as a shock, but we know that if we wait, she will lose a year’s development. Medical aid has been wonderful and they have come to the party regarding some funds,

but they haven’t agreed to all the funds and with the implants being so expensive we will have to do some more fundraising,” said Cathrin. In order to do this they are holding a bingo evening tomorrow and a family fun walk on November 12. The Help Hannah Hear Bingo Evening will be held at 7pm at the Old Grey Sports Club at 2 Lennox Street, Glendinningvale. Entrance is a R20 donation to Help Hannah Hear, while it will cost R5 per card per game (9 games in total). For tickets send an e-mail to taryn@instalek.co.za. Hannah’s story Hannah was born on November 24, 2010 and appeared to be a perfect little girl. This obviously will affect her independence when she gets older,” Cathrin explained. At six months the couple realised that something was amiss with Hannah’s hearing, and they took her to an ear, nose and throat specialist, thinking perhaps that it was just fluid blocking her ears. An Auditory Brainstem Response was done to test her hearing and it was found that she had severe hearing loss in both her ears. “This has been the hardest nine months of our lives, but we can say that we are doing everything in our power to give our little angel the best that we can.”

Hy was van 1970 tot en met sy aftrede in 1992 skoolhoof by Laerskool Young Park. Na sy aftrede het hy en sy vrou Rina hulle op Jeffreysbaai gevestig. Motorist applauds post office I RECENTLY read your article regarding the frustration of motorists when it comes to relicensing of motor vehicles, “Car registration a headache for locals” (PE Express, Sept. 28). In response to the recent article concerning the frustration of motorists in relicensing of motor vehicles, I had an extremely pleasant experience. I relocated to Port Elizabeth from Cape Town and today (October 3) was a convenient day for me to convert my Cape licence number to that of the Eastern Cape. I went to the Greenacres Post Office this morning for the renewal, and they completely renewed my vehicle licence and gave me an EC number. This was a quick process, and the service was excellent and very friendly! I must admit that Greenacres Post Office is the best Post Office I’ve seen in a long time. It is no wonder they have already received one or more service awards. From November onwards, they are no longer allowed to change existing registration numbers, only renew licences. Evening of tenpin bowling fun with Cheshire Summerstrand CHESHIRE Home Summerstrand, a home for the caring of people with disabilities, is having a cheese and wine/tenpin bowling fundraising evening on October 31. The event will be held at the Lighthouse in the Boardwalk

Complex. It promises to be an evening of fun and laughter. Tickets cost R200 per person which includes wine, cold drinks, cheese and snacks. Participants will also receive a CD of photos, which will be taken during the evening.

There will also be one hour of karaoke afterwards at no extra cost or people can play a game of pool at no extra cost. A trophy for the highest score will be awarded and prizes for the person with the lowest score, as well as for the winning team and the right to be called “Cheshire

TAKE the agony out of Christmas gift shopping this year by having your gifts wrapped for you and at the same time make a difference in someone’s life. Christmas gift wrapping has become an annual “event” at the Walmer Park Shopping Centre and once again this service will be offered to shoppers at the Edgars Court from December 5 to 24 – all in aid of the PE Mental Health Society. The purpose of the gift wrapping service is to create awareness about this organisation and its services to people living with mental and multiple disabilities, and to generate funds to help them sustain their services. PE Mental Health has two residential centres for adults in Walmer and Hillside, three special day care centres for children with severe to profound disabilities (106 children attend these centres) and two youth skills development centre’s, which cater for 140 youth on disability grant to assist them in work skills in order to obtain learnership-opportunisties, entrepreneurship or employment. On November 9 participants will learn more on how to decorate a Christmas Tree. In order to be considered a child mental health disorder; the symptoms must be present for 6 months or longer and be affecting several areas of the child’s life. It is not uncommon to be diagnosed with both depression

and an anxiety disorder. * Obsessive-compulsive disorder: This disorder is characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours used by the child to relieve the anxious thoughts (compulsions). Compulsions can be behaviours like hand washing, organizing, checking, or mental acts like ritualized praying, counting and repeating words silently. * School Phobia: According to several research studies undertaken, many children struggle with anxieties related to school. Common school-based anxieties are separation anxiety, panic/anxiety attacks, social anxiety, perfectionism, and other general school-based fears. * Separation anxiety:Fears of be-

ing separated from a safe and secure adult can cause major problems like school refusal, thwarting events with friends, and resisting extracurricular activities. Separation anxiety is characterized by extreme and unnecessary anxiety when faced with being separated from those to whom your child is attached. Physical symptoms include sleep issues, complaints about physical problems like headaches, stomach aches or nausea, and sometimes experiencing a panic attack. The child will act excessively clingy, plead to stay with the parent, attempt to bargain and negotiate, and may even erupt in rage. He will do anything to prevent the separation. * Panic disorder: This is diagnosed if your child suffers at least two unex-

pected panic or anxiety attacks, which means they come on suddenly and for no reason, followed by at least one month of concern over having another attack and losing control * Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Children with PTSD may have intense fear and anxiety, become emotionally numb or easily irritable, or avoid places, people, or activities after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic or life-threatening event. Not every child who experiences or hears about a traumatic event will develop PTSD. * Social anxiety disorder: This is characterized by an intense fear of social and performance situations and activities such as being called on in class or starting a conversation with a peer. This can significantly impair a child’s school performance

and attendance, as well as his or her ability to socialize with peers and develop and maintain relationships. TIPS FOR PARENTS: •Pay attention to your child’s feelings. Stay calm when your child becomes anxious about a situation. •Recognize and praise small accomplishments. Don’t punish mistakes or lack of progress. •Be flexible and try to maintain a normal routine. Plan for transitions. •Modify expectations during stressful periods. Keep in mind that your child’s anxiety disorder diagnosis is not a sign of poor parenting. It may add stress to family life, however. It is helpful to build a support network of relatives and friends.

Fixing a shaky chair

What role the chairperson of a body corporate plays and the nature of his or her responsibilities are the subject of this week’s column. Our experts have been approached by a reader who recently purchased a sectional title unit and was subsequently elected as trustee at the annual general meeting. The group of trustees is quite small, numbering just four members including the chairperson. The reader is, unfortunately, concerned about some of the chairperson’s actions and decisions. A sectional title scheme is managed by a body corporate, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Port Elizabeth. “It is responsible for the control, administration and management of the common property for the benefit of all owners in the scheme.” Vermaak says the trustees are appointed to handle the finances and running of the complex on behalf of the body corporate. “They are elected by the owners at the annual general meeting. A chairperson must act honestly and in the interests of

the body corporate.” According to Vermaak, the chairperson’s main function is to chair the meetings. “The only additional power he or she may have is a casting vote when trustees are deadlocked on an issue. The chairperson may vote a second time to break the deadlock, except if there are only two trustees.” An even number of trustees, as in the reader’s instance, does lend itself to potential deadlock, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys. Should the trustees be unhappy with the actions of the chairperson, says Du Toit, they have a couple of options open to them. “The rules under Annexure Eight of the Sectional Titles Act provide that a chairperson will stay in office for a period of one year.” Du Toit says the rules also state that a chairperson may be unseated before the end of his or her term in one of two ways. “The trustees can remove the chairperson by a majority vote at a trustees’ meeting or the body corporate can do so by a majority vote at a special general meeting.” , Send your questions to pr@fullstopcom.com. Willows Challenge taken to next level THE Willows Challenge powered by Die Burger and Bay FM takes place at The Willows Resort on Saturday, November 26 and has teamed up with Supersport for national television coverage of the event. “We are delighted to team up with Supersport to take this festival of sporting fun to the next level,” said Herman Nell of Madiba Bay Resorts. Nell added that the television coverage not only further confirms the beauty of our natural coastline but that it will also convey Nelson Mandela Bay’s ability to successfully host sporting events that suit various disciplines. The organizers of the Willows Challenge – Willows Resort, Z-sports, Achilles and Red Cherry Adventures will stage a 10km and 5km trail run, the Varsity College Mountain Bike Relay Challenge, an Incredible Adventure Race, Potjiekos Competition and a new addition to the event a Kids Mountain Bike Race. All the events take place within the safe picturesque borders of The Willows Resort. For participants coming from out of town, or for Port Elizabeth residents who would like to kick-start the holidays, The Willows is offering 10% discount on accommodation from November 25 to 27. The beneficiary for this event is MTR Smit Children’s Home. Flexider will be hosting the children for the event as part of their community upliftment plan and the Children’s Home alongside Crystal Gardens will be hosting the

tea garden for food and refreshments to raise additional funds. The entrance fee for the 10km trail is R30 and R20 for the 5km trail. Schools that have the most participants must pre-enter to win a once-off on-air advertising campaign courtesy of Bay FM valued at R2500. To enter a pot in the potjie competition it’s R200 per team. The Incredible Adventure Race which is an ‘Amazing Race’ styled challenge is R800 per team of four. The Varsity College MTB 3-hour Relay Challenge cost for teams of 2 or 3 persons is R200 per team. The winners will be the team with the most laps in the given period and the fastest last lap. The Kids MTB Races for U8, U10 and 12and-under will race over a 2.5km distance and the older kids over a 5km distance. The entry fee is R50 per child with medals for all finishers. Entry forms for the 10km/5km trail are available at selected sport shops. Entry forms for all the events can be downloaded from www.willows-challenge.co.za. Music promoters Goue Drome have confirmed that Gouwsie, Carina Renz and Berne will form part of the entertainment. Tickets went on sale last week for the SA leg of the hugely popular international HSBC Sevens World Series tournament, which this year moves to an exciting new venue at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth. The event takes place on December 9 and 10, and tickets are expected to sell fast for an event that in venues such as Wellington, New Zealand, sells out within minutes of the tickets going on sale. “Rugby fans will be able to watch top-class, international Sevens rugby for as little as R80. A MEMORABLE Rugby World Cup has come to a close - splendidly presented and organised by New Zealand – and the Webb Ellis Cup deservedly has gone to the home country of the All Blacks. Since the tournament’s inception, three countries – Australia, South Africa and now New Zealand – have chalked up two wins apiece. What a game Sunday’s final, in Auckland, was. Lowscoring - just a single point

separating the victorious All Blacks, at 8-7, from gallant underdogs, France - it contained just about everything that good rugby demands. A preponderance of critics had predicted a whitewash for France. But from the kickoff Les Bleus, playing in white, set out to prove them wrong. All credit to New Zeeland for hanging on to snatch a well-merited victory. All round they were fractionally the better side. With a first try early on by Tony Woodcock, it seemed the doom-sayers would be proved correct. It was a try, scored through a glaring gap in a lineout close to France’s 22, that highlighted perhaps the Tricolors’ only serious defensive lapse. It allowed the burly prop to burst through for the simplest of tries. It has to be recorded that a surprisingly off-form performance by scrumhalf Pirri Weepu, who failed to succeed with a single successful goalkick (two penalties and a conversion) made life more difficult for the All Blacks. Indeed, it was not until Stephen Donald, replacing the injured Aaron Cruden and goaling the All Blacks’ single score of the second half, that the home side, going into an 8-0 lead, looked to have things more or less under control. Soon flanker, captain Thierry Dusoutoir, had them on the scoreboard

with a classic try which was duly converted. The French, too, had goalkicking accuracy problems, missing two goalable penalties as the sands of the game began to run out. But the Tricolors, in these last 20 minutes, deservedly emerged the dominant team. As good as any on the pitch throughout the match was South African referee, Craig Joubert. Cool and undemonstrative, he handled the game with remarkable aplomb. How would the Springboks have fared? It’s hard to imagine them doing much better than the French. Perhaps the best comment on the Boks’ failure to stamp meaningful authority on this World Cup can be summed up in a single sentence. It is this – and your column has said this on a number of occasions during Peter de Villiers’ tenure as head coach - the blame clearly rests with SARU for its failure to terminate the services of an inadequate coach when it became clear such a decision was urgently needed. * Cricket: Nice to see the Proteas stick one across the Aussies in Port Elizabeth. But can’t we get rid of the incompetence of dishonest officials who have no problem in twice firing a president because he obviously knows too much about the corruption that resides with his fellow officials?

New ground in New Delhi Talking F1 by Natalie le Clue BOTH the driver’s and constructor’s championship for 2011 have been wrapped up but Formula 1 continues to break new ground. This weekend India makes its debut on the Formula 1 calendar as the buzzing country hosts its first ever race just outside New Delhi. The Buddh International Circuit provides another challenge for the Formula 1 calendar and opportunity for some to salvage their seasons. Despite none of the drivers having any physical experience of the Indian track they will have spent some time in the teams’ simulators to familiarize them with the layout of the track. Other subtle details such as styles of kerbs and bumps on the circuit will become evident only once the drivers are out on the track. At a glance the layout reveals a relatively flowing run around 5.137 km punctuated by high speed straights. The race will be run over 55 laps. The difference in altitude, reminiscent of venues such as Spa-Francorchamps and Turkey, is extreme in comparison to the norm in F1. The lap around the Buddh circuit is also expected to have an average speed of 235 km/h – one of the highest on the calendar. The weather forecast in India is the one thing that isn’t too hard to predict this weekend. A zero percent chance of precipitation and hot, humid conditions will greet the Formula 1 paddock. Temperatures are predicted to be in the region of mid- to low-thirties.

Long straights are good news for those teams with a superior engine bolted to the back of their cars. It’s been the Mercedes Benz-shod cars that have continually proven to have the most powerful engines, in terms of top speed, throughout the season. A better top speed won’t necessarily guarantee a good result, but it will help in overtaking and in defending in the DRS zone. The race for second place in the season is raging between Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton. Former world champion Lewis Hamilton has remained bullish and adamant of his chances of securing victory in the remaining races of the season. His determined performance in Korea two weeks ago will have given his confidence a much needed boost. He will have his work cut out though as Jenson Button has been in dazzling form and as it stands looks the most likely of the challengers to take the fight to Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel. In a move that is sure to please the sponsors, the Hispania Racing Team (HRT) has drafted Narain Karthikeyan into the second of their race seats for the Indian GP. Given the pace of the HRT, Karthikeyan can’t hope for much more than getting to the end of the race. Silly season continues to rage with rumours that a deal between Kimi Raïkkönen and Williams will be announced some point during the weekend. Adrian Sutil remains under pressure from Nico Hulkenburg to retain his seat at Force India. Cricket may be first and foremost in the hearts of all Indians but this weekend their attention will be turned to Formula 1 for the very first time. With its rich and engaging culture India is sure to give us a race to remember. * It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli who succumbed to his injuries following a crash during the Malaysian GP. KING cars

Motor rally action at Jeffreys Bay Mall FOUNTAINS Mall, Jeffreys Bay, will be the centre of attraction this Saturday with rally cars participating in special stages around the car park area during the day. The Shopping Centre is hosting the 5th round of the regional motor vehicle rally starting in the car park area and various gravel and tar stages around Jeffreys Bay. Drifting cars will give demonstrations between the rally stages, with smoking tyres and sideways

action from Wayne Smith and Anre Cordier. The Rally cars will consist of three classes with a variety of vehicles which include the Volkswagen RA5 Junior Rally Team, S20 modified/Retro pre-1985 and Luk coastal challenge. Drivers and navigators from 17 years of age to 79, will be competing in all makes of vehicles from pre-1985 to modern saloon cars rigged out for gravel and tar.
