Wise women bring light for students in dark A

NCEBA DLADLA

PORT Elizabeth women’s NonGovernmental Organisation (NGO) believes they have a solution to what is currently a big problem facing South Africa – that of being in the dark as a result of power outages. “Women in Social Entrepreneurship (WISE) is spearheading a project to assist needy school children perform better in their

studies through solar lights,” said WISE Project Manager Courage Magwa. WISE, which is a Mount Road-based NGO made up of five women from Port Elizabeth townships, also seeks to promote the use of solar-powered appliances to meet the diverse needs for electricity such as charging laptops, computers, radios and household lighting. An American Solar Energy Distributor, Richard Silcock, recently donated solar powered lights to WISE to distribute to needy children in New Brighton and KwaNobuhle townships.

According to Magwa, the solar energy lights provides light for almost 16 hours when fully charged. He believes that if the majority of people used solar energy, the country wouldn’t be faced with the on-going problem of power failure. “While the project was started to assist children better their grades, we soon realised there is a great need for families, especially those in underdeveloped areas like shacks, to use this cheap but safe technology,” Magwa told PE Express Indaba, adding that he believed there were many more electrical appli-

ances and cellphones among shack-dwellers than many people imagined. He added, “given a chance, we could introduce a system of assisting needy communities or those who want to save money, by bringing light using cheap and appropriate technologies. This method could contribute significantly through the off grid electricity supply to the communities.” He said other people could take part in the programme by buying solar lamps for the benefit of needy children who have to study at night without light.

Hip hop star delights at Toy Run Local Hip Hop artist Azz Veritazz (centre back) participated in the Port Elizabeth Toy Run Christmas Party for needy children at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on Saturday, November 29. The young lad who is going to the United States in June 2015 as part of the ARTS International Showcase, sang and entertained the children and their teachers with captivating sounds from his latest album, “I am Moving” to be out on Friday, December 12. Candles for Sakhumzi to ignite his career BETTIE GILIOMEE A YOUNG man from Joe Slovo who managed to overcome many obstacles to study psychology so that he could one day also help people, is the second recipient of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Trust’s Bursary Legacy campaign.

Siviwe Mbele (18), (left) and Sakhumzi Dukwe (19) are the first and second recipients respectively of the NMMU Trust Light a Candle Ignite a Career Bursary Campaign. PHOTO:BETTIE GILIOMEE

The trust last week officially announced Sakhumzi Dukwe (19), who has just completed his first year in BA Psychology, as the recipient. The first recipient was Siviwe Mbele who has also just completed her first year at NMMU in BSc Information Systems. The bursary of R25 000 was thanks to 50 people who each contributed R500 to the campaign with the slogan “Light a Candle, Ignite a Career”. Mbele describes his mom, Sindiswa, as his biggest inspiration. She had to raise him and his sister on her own after his father passed away when he was six years old.

He had already excelled at primary school attending the Joe Slovo Primary School where in grade 7 he received a bursary from the African Scholarship Fund to attend the S.E.K. Mqhayi Senior Secondary School from which he matriculated last year. “My mom is my biggest motivation. She has sacrificed a lot to give me a good education. Her example motivates me to only do my best,” said Sakhumzi. According to Sakhumzi, at school a lot of emphasis was placed on studying towards a career in engineering, but that was not where his interest lies. “My passion is people. I want to get an in-depth knowledge of people so that I can help them to empower themselves – to give them the resources to help themselves. My other passion is business and I hope to combine these two passions in my career one day. The first recipient, Siviwe, said the bursary not only empowered her, but that her story has

given hope to fellow students too. She recently received an email from a student who lost both his parents. He said he could easily have fallen into using drugs and a bad lifestyle but her story motivated and inspired him to concentrate on his studies and pursue his tertiary education. Renita Affat, CEO of the NMMU Trust, said they hoped to award these bursaries to 8 more students. According to Affat any corporation, business, group, club or individual can light a candle at a cost of R500 to contribute to the bursary. “This is not a traditional type of bursary. It goes beyond just donating. It is a unique programme with interactive social media platforms allowing those who donated to have direct contact and interaction with the recipient, follow his or her progress and give input to help shape his or her career,” said Affat. To pledge, phone tracy@outsidethebox.co.za. Visit the Trust’s website http://trust.nmmu.ac.za or follow the campaign ‘Bursary Legacy Campaign’ on Facebook.

Learners drive for change in their communities REPORTER WHILE most of PE’s learners begin their summer holidays this week, 80 learners from 33 schools across Nelson Mandela Bay are attending a three-day annual summit to help find practical solutions for safety and crime prevention in their communities. Like most provinces in South Africa, the Eastern Cape is battling with high rates of crime and violence. One of the major challenges faced by young people in the Metro is the high youth unemployment rate and poverty, which leads to the attraction of youth to a life of crime.

The Youth for Safer Communities (YSC) project is an initiative, which began in 2012, through collaboration between Masifunde Learner Development and GIZ. The project aims to encourage young people to recognise the role that they can play in the creation of community safety. The focus of this year’s Youth For Safer Communities summit is to come up with practical solutions to the challenges which the Mandela Bay’s Municipal Community Safety Forum (CSF) has come across. The school delegates are looking at the CSF’s challenges, the major causes of crime and violence in Nelson Mandela Bay and discuss what the youth could do to help solve

these challenges. The YSC schools will then put together a plan of action for 2015 and present it on the last day of the Summit. One of the participants from Walmer High School, 16-year-old Sanelisiwe Dick said she has been absorbing all the information she is learning from the programme like a sponge and she will then in turn impart the information to other learners at her school. Yonela Maposa from Newell High School said the information he is gaining at the summit will also help improve the lives of his peers at school and the community. “Learning about the social ills such as crime and how we as the youth can help alleviate these problems is a great strength for me. I have realised my role as a youth leader and I depend on my fellow peers at school also realising roles they can take to achieve a better and safer community for all,” said Maposa. Rene Uren from GIZ which are the funders of the summit said their main purpose is to build capacity and ensure the creation of a safer community. “There are several workshops which we conduct annually which focus on crime prevention as the key element. The main objective of this summit is to impart valuable ideas and information to these young leaders at

a very crucial stage of their lives so they grow up with the know-how and are also able to come up with their own ideas and functionality to best suit their communities,” said Uren. Linda Zali from Masifunde Learner Development said the young delegates would also be encouraged to act as local heroes next year. “ They must work at becoming change makers in their schools and in turn in their communities,” said Zali. Zali said when the year ended in 2015 they would have another summit to discuss and evaluate each other on the different changes they had made individually in their communities and at school as change maker heroes. “The aim of Youth For Safer Communities is for learners to become change-makers (active role models) inspiring change within their communities by initiating extra-curricular projects and activities such as drama, debating and empowerment through mentors and peer helpers. The hope is that these initiatives will give our youth something constructive, meaningful and positive to do with their time, thereby keeping them off the streets and helping reduce the rate of crime in their communities.” said Zali. Mayor says budget must be found for Metro police service implementation METRO MINUTES THE necessary budget must be “made available for the implementation of the Metro Policy Service,” Mayor Ben Fihla says in a report to Council which meets tomorrow (Thursday). No indication of the funding required, both in terms of start-up and operational costs, is contained in the report, which is headed “Progress Report on the Implementation of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Police Service”.

Chief Operating Officer Mzwake Clay told the Budget and Treasury Committee earlier this year that there was no funding for the metro police in the 2014/15 Budget. He pointed out that as a result, no costs could be incurred “as no budget exists for the additional costs,” adding that the matter would be dealt with when the Adjustments Budget was presented to Council. Clay said the only way in which the metro police could be funded otherwise, was if savings were identified in the Safety and Security Budget.

16 Days of activism launched PORT Elizabeth members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) at the Mount Road Police Station launched 16 Days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse on Tuesday November 25. “It was a resounding success. Ladies from other police stations in Port Elizabeth attended the launch. We also had a speaker from Nicro, a social worker Rashreeqa Leander, and our main speaker was Pastor Eunice Liberty,” said Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg. The police spokesperson said they invited people who were working with women and children in abusive relationships. “We, as SAPS members, also need encouragement from these role-players in order for us to know that we are not alone when

it comes to the prevention of these crimes,” she said. ACVV Algoa Park helped those present at the event to sign a pledge to stop violence against women and children and to work with other role-players in addressing the scourge. “Campaigns like these do make a difference. Even if you assist just one child or one woman in an abusive relationship, you have made a difference,” said Janse van Rensburg, adding that women and children should be freed from harm all the time. “Although this time, November 25 to December 10 (16 Days) is dedicated to no violence against women and children, such an awareness should be created every day,” said Captain Janse van Rensburg.

In his report to Council, the Mayor also recommends that Executive Director: Corporate Services Mod Ndoyana “issue a letter authorising the Chief of the Metro Police Pinkie Mathabathe to assume command and control of the Traffic and Licensing and Security Services”. In addition, the mayor recommends that Safety and Security Executive Director Shane Brown consults Ndoyana “in respect of lines of reporting for the Director: Traffic Services and Acting Director: Security Services as per the Metro Police Structure”. Further, the Mayor has resolved that Ndoya-

na should “avail dedicated personnel to finalise the amalgamation process” of the various parts of the Safety and Security Directorate such as the Traffic and Licensing and Security Services Divisions. This will involve job evaluation, structure, placement and job descriptions for the municipal police before the formal launch takes place. In addition, the Mayor says Ndoyana must also convene a workshop for the trade unions “in order to deal with labour-related issues”. This follows the political workshop that was held in June this year.

Happy Valley ready for visitors this season THE newly-refurbished Happy Valley beach front which has had a very proud tradition as a family holiday attraction, will be much safer for residents this festive season. This is according to DA Ward 2 councillor, Dean Biddulph, who said the beach office has employed two permanent security guards to patrol and secure the area. “The challenges long-term will be how to ensure that safety is improved and how to prevent further theft and vandalism. My plan is to lobby for funding to allow for the erection of a perimeter electrified game type fence which will go a long way toward achieving this objective in deterring this behaviour,” Biddulph said. He added that the refurbishment covers largely replacement of infrastructure and cabling which has been stolen or vandalised over the past few years and which severely

tarnished the reputation of Happy Valley as a nostalgic tourism attraction. Biddulph said the work at Happy Valley was near completion with many of the coloured spotlights, light boxes, supply, switching boxes and cables already replaced. As part of his plans in the area, Biddulph said his long term vision for the Blue Flag beach was to develop more commercial elements to create another node at Humewood Beach. “Historically, before the Hobie Pier was built, Humewood beach was traditionally our premier beach. We want to regenerate interest by developing the right kind of attractions around the beach and valley. We want to create a desirable beach-going venue again which will also help relieve some of the crowd pressure on the Hobie Beach node.”

KwaNobuhle friends and neighbours flock together to celebrate advent celebrating the arrival of Christ.” “Christians should worship together. We really had a wonderful service,” said Mama Dean Mirriam Cuntu. Mother Noluvo Thomson said the service taught her something very important, she said. “And that is, when I enjoy my Christmas meal and other festivities, I should also be thinking of those who are less fortunate. The Bible tells us of a story of a rich young man who was asked to sell his belongings and give money to the poor. He was so focused on earthly riches and forgot about the love of God and neighbour,” said Thomson. Meanwhile, Rev. Jikeka has announced that his church will hold a national conference at St Thomas Church, Helen Joseph Street, KwaNobuhle from Friday, December 26. “Guests from across the country will be arriving on Christmas Day. The conference will continue until Sunday, December 28,” said Jikeka, adding that they urged all Orthodox Christians to attend the most important event in the history of their church. – NCEBA DLADLA

ST THOMAS African Catholic Church in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage celebrated the First Sunday in Advent in style with their neighbours, the Ethopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church last Sunday. The service, full of anticipation and hope, celebrated the first coming of the Lord Jesus Christ as the saviour of the world; and His second coming as the ultimate judge of the world. It called members of the Christian community to enter the spirit of Christmas with pure and contrite hearts. The advent calls for the spirit of loving, giving, forgiving and alms-giving. “We invited our neighbours and friends, the Ethopian Orthodox church members to worship with us this day because they have always been with us throughout the process of building our parish,” said Rev. Xhanti Busakwe, St Thomas’ rector. His Ethopian Orthodox colleague Rev. Mnikelo “Gabrie Mariam” Jikeka concurred, “We had a wonderful service. It was touching. I am happy we spent the time with our friends,

Township role-models and men of honour identified and awarded NCEBA DLADLA “MY father is my role-model. He was a true man who always told me to stand up when I fall and wipe my tears. These words, he said, are the words you must remember and use when you’re older and faced with life’s challenges...” These are some of the words that captured the emotions of judges in the “Men of Honour” competition by DOXA, Youth Apprentice and Coaching, an NGO that seeks to find men of honour in the Nelson Mandela Bay townships. In the spirit of celebrating the International Day for Men on November 19, DOXA asked school children to write a 200 word essay about men they thought deserved to be honoured and celebrated for their leadership qualities and exemplary behaviour in their communities. According to DOXA Project Manager Thembani Gqiba, this was celebrated be-

Amanina from St Thomas ACC and Ethopian Orthodox. In the front row from left, lady Bishop Stella Hloyi, Mother Deacon Phiweka Busakwe, Mother Deacon Mirriam Cuntu, Mother Noluvo Thomson, Mother Nomakhuze Busakwe and Mother Sinomtha Jikeka during the First Advent Service. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA

cause, despite the problems of women and child abuse by men - which must be fought against on all fronts – “the world is upheld by the veracity of good men: they make the earth wholesome. They who lived among them found life glad and nutritious,” he said, quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson. Lwanele Matshanga’s essay about his late fater and many others proved that in our townships there are good fathers, brothers, uncles and nephews. “These are real men, who are their son’s first heroes and daughter’s first love.We have in our communities ordinary people that do extra-ordinary things. Those were acknowleged and rewarded,” said DOXA’s Nolwazi Adams. “Doxa’s awards will surely play a huge role in restoring the honour and the dignity back to men,” said Gqiba. The department of Social Development’s Monde Danster said his department supported such initiatives which were aimed at restoring Ubuntu back to the people.

Empumalanga Primary gets state of the art Media Classroom NCEBA DLADLA EMPUMALANGA Primary School in NU9 Motherwell was awarded a state of the art Media Classroom by MTN last Friday for winning the drama category of the Baswa Le Meetse competition. Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pamela Tshwete was at the handover with officials from the Department of Education and MTN SA Foundation. The award comprises 20 work stations, a multifunction printer, data projector, R1 000 internet service subsidy for 24 months, air conditioner and an interactive white board. “We know that children need access to the outside world through technology. We are giving back to these children who are still in the foundation phase so that they are able to compete when they go to high school and tertiary education,” said MTN Regional Sales Manager Unathi Hobo. Tshwete said, “You now have

computers and other facilities that we in our days did not have. Our teachers used chalkboards but look at what you have right now. There is no reason why we cannot produce more Nelson Mandelas of this world.” Ward Councillor Thembile Nkosiyaphantsi said he believed the parents of the school and local residents should jealously guard and protect the equipmet against vandalism and thieves, which was huge problem. “I hope the community will protect the school and that businesses in the area would pledge to secure the school,” said Cllr. Nkosiyaphantsi. Baswa Le Meetse is a sub-programme under the 2020 Vision programme of the Department of Water and Sanitation that was initiated by former Minister Kader Asmal. The Department awards the winning school an amount of R6 000 of which half of it goes to the school and the other to the learners for educational needs.

Judoka Babalo Magqabi to represent Nelson Mandela Bay in Zimbabwe NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Judokas continue to shine on the world stage. The latest judoka to put the city on the map is 19 year-old Babalo Magqabi. Magqabi, who is included in a very strong South African team, jetted off to Zimbabwe on Monday to take part in the Zone 6 Youth Games involving the SADC countries from Friday, December 5 to Sunday, December 7. The Port Elizabethan is placed at number one in the South African Judo rankings in his category (55kg under 20 years). He started Judo in 2003 under Budokwai Judo Club coach Sensei Mhimhi Magqabi. The club is based at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre, Kwazakhele. “It is affiliated to the Nelson Mandela Bay Judo Association which is part of Judo South Africa and the International Judo Federation,” said Sensei Mzingisi Magqabi. Sensei Magqabi thanked Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor Oom Ben Fihla for supporting the sport which is now reaping the rewards. “Babalo is one of the Judo players who were assisted by the office of the Executive Mayor with sponsorship in order to take part in the National Ranking Events so that he can collect points to be invited in the National trials,” said Sensei Magqabi. He said that it is in taking part in the national ranking events that a judoka is respected, honoured and ranked high in the world. Babalo Magqabi is due back in the country on Tuesday December 9.

Highly rated Nelson Mandela Bay judoka Babalo Magqabi (19) will fly the SA flag in Zimbabwe at the Zone 6 Games this week.

Heroes Marathon in Qunu to attract national and international athletes NCEBA DLADLA THE 2014 Heroes Marathon, a Transkei flagship event which will take place in Mthatha on Tuesday 16 December, was launched at the Boardwalk ICC last Thursday. The event, according to MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Pemmy Majodina was started in 1999 in the former Transkei. “The event is used to commemorate heroes and heroines coming from the Eastern Cape, The Home of Legends and is celebrated on the Day of Reconciliation,” said Majodina during the launch. Explaining why the event was launched in Port Elizabeth in Nelson Mandela Bay whereas it was taking place in Mthatha in the King Sabatha Dalindyebo Municipality, the MEC retorted, “We are one province. This is not a Transkei but an Eastern Cape event which is open not only to Eastern Capebased athletes but to others from across the country and including SADC countries like Lesotho, Botswana and Malawi.” Furthermore, according to Majodina, they wanted to dispel the myth that government did not sponsor events of such magnitude taking place in the Transkei and that road running was not only for urban areas. The DSRAC sponsored R2 million Heroes Marathon was aimed at attracting a mixture of tourists to the province as it was linked to the

Liberation Route which touches base at Qunu where former State President and liberation struggle hero, Nelson Mandela’s world heritage burial place is, said Majodina, adding that this was for the first time that the race takes place whilst Madiba is not there. “Madiba used to support this marathon hence we have not changed its start in Qunu,” said Majodina, adding that they were encouraging mass participation with this sport event as sport was a catalyst for nation building and social cohesion. She said the event which promotes a healthy life-style will call for a generational mix involving the youth, the veterans, the masters and grand masters also taking part. “There is something exciting for the athletes as well,” said MEC Majodina about the huge prizes on offer which will be equal between men and women: R90 000 for men and women who come first, R30 000 for coming second and R20 000 for third position in the 42,2 km. “But also, the Heroes Marathon will be a family event with fantastic and jam- packed with with exciting entertainment. The organisers expected 2000 participants in the 42,2 km, 10 km and the 5km races this year compared to the 1000 that registered last year. The 5km fun run was described as a family event which will encourage finishing the race rather than winning it.

Chippa United ready to face Black Aces and continue with their winning ways NCEBA DLADLA ABSA premiership contenders Chippa United face dark horses Mpumalanga Black Aces in an Absa Premier League match at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium tonight. Kick-off is at 7:30pm. The Chilli Boys, as United is popularly known, are back to their winning ways after dashing Free State Stars’ hopes 1-0 at home last Wednesday. This was after coach Roger Sikhakhane’s

warriors were unbeaten in six games with only two stalemates before they were stopped in their tracks by a 2-1 loss to Bloemfontein Celtics away. They looked like a perfectly oiled machine against Ea lla Koto (Free State Stars), surging forward together in attack and fighting together to get the ball when challenging for it. Tonight they will be boosted by the Bafana Bafana goal poacher David Zulu who scored a goal in a 2-0 win for the national team (Bafana Bafana) during the Nelson Mandela Chal-

lenge against Ivory Coast at Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit at the weekend. The other goal was scored by Bongani “Ben 10” Zungu of Mamelodi Sundowns. Going to the match, United, who are determined to finish in the Top 8 bracket when league the closes, are placed at Number four on the log standings with 20 points from 12 games while their opponents are seated at number nine with 16 points from the same number of games. “The players are ready for the Black Aces. Real City disappoint their home supporters MOTHERWELL supporters were disappointed by their side Real City when they went down to the newcomers FC Elliot United who beat them 3-1 in their ABC Motsepe Second Division encounter at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. The visitors did not experience any difficulties but the home-side was kept at bay by the big players. United’s striker Themba Maloyi registered an opening goal in the 38th minute. Errors and sluggishness of City’s midfielders cost their side dearly. United’s midfielder Thulani Mgcaba seemed to enjoy the game and he tormented City’s midfielders and defenders. In the 58th minute City’s goal poacher Lukhanyo Rasmeni pulled an equaliser. To the dismay of the home supporters, Maloyi

is a must. We must win our games if we want to remain in the PSL,” said coach Roger Sikhakhane. Sikhakhane said they got a wake-up call from the loss against Celtics and would like to continue from where they left off against Free State Stars. Sikhakhane will be using his usual squad, save for Mxolisi Ntshingila who is down with a bout of flu and Siyabonga Zulu who is nursing an ankle injury. “Otherwise, all our players are ready for the game, including David Zulu.”

finished his brace on the hour mark following a perfect cross from his right wing Siyanda Funo. United sealed the game when Mgcaba scored the last goal of the game in the 85th minute. The visitors’ defenders Simphiwe Dlamini and Edwin Xaba kept things tight at the back. Another Nelson Mandela Bay side, Morning Stars, snatched an all-important 1-0 away victory from Cacadu United in Alexandria. SUBS drew 1-1 with FC Buffalo in East London following a goal scored by Aviwe Tise Venge.

IT WAS a do-or-die situation when Young Callies shared the spoils 1-1 with Stokes United during their NODEFA VW Community Trust Premier League game played at Jabavu Stadium on Saturday. Both sides played entertaining football and it seemed that the two sides were of equal strengths. Fans were on their feet, rallying behind their sides. The full-time results were a true reflec-

tion of the game. The gallant Manchester United trounced City Friends 3-0. Highland Spurs humiliated Khayelitsha Stars 4-0. Black Aces suffered a 3-0 from New City Stars. Manchester Babes played their hearts out when they beat the gutsy City Style 3-2. Temptations succumbed 3-4 to Really Rangers. REAL Strikers became the first side to break the unbeaten record of Milan Stars when they struck them 3-2 in the MOFA Build It Premier League game at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. The first half score was 2-2 with Strikers showing that they were desperate for a win. A late second half penalty which was scored, settled the nerves of Strikers supporters.

Tomorrow Stars beat their neighbours Highland Spurs 1-0. Young Tigers overcame Liverpool 2-1 while Crystal Palace drew 2-2 with Motherwell United who came from 2-0 down to level the score. In MOFA Build It First Division Scorpions thwarted XI Brothers 8-0. Camper United and Peace United did not taste any victory in the 2014/2015 season. Camper drew 1-1 in both of their games that they played against Island City and Fairview Rovers. Callies proved that they were a force to be reckoned with when they defeated the unrivalled Lion City 2-1 at Westbourne Stadium. Young Ideas cemented their top position in league log standings when they were awarded softpoints over Ghetto Stars who arrived late for their game at NU 9 Stadium. Royal Bucs were awarded three points over Peace United who came along with two U/21 players in their line-up instead of five U/21 players as SAFA league rules.
