JOE SLOVO RESIDENTS’ FIGHT FOR RECOGNITION OF GROUND
Residents’ fight grinds housing plan to halt NCEBA DLADLA
A
housing plan for residents of Joe Slovo Township had to be put on hold owing to infighting between ANC members who are supporting two different ANC factions in the Ward. Tension between the supporters of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Ward 41 Councillor Mbongeni Bungane and ANC Branch Chairman Simphiwe Tyukana, are running high - all to the detriment of service delivery. Havoc erupted in the area last Wednesday when residents, who were driven in a truck to occupy sites in the new developed Joe Slovo West, were allegedly pelted with stones and hit by sticks by residents from the East. “We have been staying in this area since 1998. There wasn’t a councillor or development. But since Cllr Bungane was elected, we saw housing development, lights, water and there was sanitation. The Municipality opened 8000 plots for backyard shack dwellers who were resigistered for Joe Slovo West,” said Khayakazi Bedesho, a resident. She added, “The Municipality made it clear to us in a meeting that this housing development would include people coming from other stressed areas like eDongweni and Chris Hani Informal Settlements. Now all of a sudden we see people who call themselves the concerned group stopping people from being relocated.” Another resident said the reason why the so-called concerned residents stopped the relocated group was that they too had their own backyard dwellers.

End to strike not near – says NUMSA LIZEKA TANDWA NUMSA regional office said claims made by the Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant, on Monday that parties involved are close to reaching an agreement are false, saying until employers reach an agreement to permanently employ employees of labour brokers the strike will continue in full force. NUMSA provincial secretary, Phumzile Nodongwe, said they are not backing down on their demands for employers to cease using labour brokers who outsource employers. This come after reports by SAPA that Oliphant said an agreement would be reached soon with what the report said were “sticky issues” around labour broking, the youth wage subsidy, and housing. NUMSA are demanding that their employees receive R1 000 housing allowance, a cessation of labour brokers, 12% wage increase and permanent employment for employees under labour brokers with over three months
working experience, said Nodongwe. In a statement to the press, SEIFSA Chief Executive Officer, Kaizer Nyatsumba, said employers in the metals and engineering sector would never accede to NUMSA’s demand to desist from using the services of labour brokers. He said that the new offer was the very best that SEIFSA could make in these difficult economic circumstances. Nyatsumba said that it had become increasingly clear that NUMSA had approached the negotiations with a political agenda, which it wanted to wage through the guise of negotiations on wages and conditions of employment. “Regrettably, business is not a player on the political stage. It is evident to us that NUMSA is advancing a political agenda against the ruling party... it has now chosen to bludgeon business into submission on those issues because it could not get its way with the Government,” Nyatsumba said. In reply Nodongwe said, “This is not a political issue it is a matter of the union demanding that workers’ needs be met. I cannot
deny that there have been reports that we want to be independent of COSATU so that we can be able to reach more of our workers and open up a party that, unlike the ANC, can have far reaching results for the workers in this country.” In an interview with Indaba’s sister newspaper PE Express, NUMSA provincial secretary, Phumzile Nodongwe, slated the Municipality’s Economic Development directorate, Deputy Mayor Thando Ngcolomba, and Mayor Ben Fihla, saying they were not impressed with how the municipality had handled their case against employers before the strike began. Nodongwe said the Union tried to get the NMB Municipality to help intervene in the talks with the employers of engineers and metal workers across the Metro, but to no avail. “This strike has a direct impact on the economy of the Metro and we wanted the municipality to intervene and try to meet both parties to negotiate and ensure that we would not have to resort to a strike,” said Nodongwe. One of the affected plants in the Metro, General Motors South Africa (GMSA), shut
down its PE plant last week. GMSA Communications Manager, Denise Van Huyssteen, said last week, “The strike in the metal and engineering sector has impacted upon the supply of components to our production line, resulting in our line not being operational since July 3. “In anticipation of the strike we built up a sufficient inventory of vehicles to ensure an ongoing supply of vehicles to customers in the short to the medium term. Our Parts and Accessories operations are running as normal, ensuring full after-sales service and support to our customers,” van Huyssteen said. Nodongwe said they had rejected the offer of 10% made by employers represented by the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA), saying they were not backing down from their 12% wage increase demand. Mayoral spokesperson, Kupido Baron said, Ngcolomba had no knowledge of any meeting requests from NUMSA and if NUMSA would request a meeting with him, he would grant them an opportunity.
Muncipality implements illegal dumping strategy INDABA REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality has laid down the law with the implementation last week of a comprehensive illegal dumping strategy. A full sitting of Council sought to fasttrack the implementation of a comprehensive illegal dumping strategy that was approved last month. Earlier on, Executive Mayor Benson Fihla, affectionately known as Oom Ben, requested management to develop a template that would allow Council to track the progress of the implementation of Council
decisions that were passed. “Council approved, amongst other things, that the City Manager, Mr Mpilo Mbambisa, intervene personally to address the stalemate between two Supply Chain Management committees regarding the approval of tenders to appoint CommunityBased Contractors,” said Portfolio Chairperson for Public Health, Cllr Patricia Ndlovu. According to Cllr Ndlovu, Service Levels Agreements must be drafted whilst the awarding of the contracts was concluded. This was to ensure that they were ready for signature when the contracts were awarded.
“Funding must be secured to ensure additional Rangers can be appointed to combat illegal dumping, “ Cllr Ndlovu said. Some of the other important elements of the plan are: . The roll out of a weekly garbage collection service to all households in Nelson Mandela Bay (this will be implemented in phases depending on availability of funds), . That a whistle-blower policy be developed with regard to illegal dumping that could include incentives to the public that can provide proof of illegal dumping to the municipality, . A single centralized entity or Unit will be responsible for the implementation to
avoid grey areas and bottle-necks, . The strategy will be implemented in three phases 1. Immediate actions – enforcement, awareness, by-law fines schedule and the identification of redundant municipal land, 2. Short term actions – community and public awareness, hot-spots management and community employment projects, 3. Medium to long term actions – infrastructure requirements, change of service delivery frequency, formation of a dedication unit to deal with illegal dumping and public-private partnerships, amongst others.
Teacher crisis continues as critical posts are not filled LIZEKA TANDWA
IT’S almost the beginning of the third term
but over 90% of schools in the northern suburbs still have teacher shortages with no word from the Eastern Cape Department of Education on resolving the problem. According to a report by the Department of Education in June 2014, over 19 schools are without teachers in critical posts. These include Afrikaans medium, Maths, Maths Literacy, Physical Science and Accounting. Over 17 000 pupils are affected in the PE district alone. The document also reveals that 3659 educator posts still need to be filled in the province. Another challenge is that of 235 unqualified teachers in the Eastern Cape. DA MPL and Education Spokesperson, Edmund van Vuuren, said that most of the Port Elizabeth schools that have been affected by vacant posts and the redeployment of teachers are in the northern suburbs with 90% of the schools experiencing teacher shortages. Van Vuuren said since many of the schools in the northern suburbs are Afrikaans schools, it has been a difficult task to find teachers to be placed in the area. “We have a huge problem with crowded classes in the northern areas. Most of our teachers have had to combine classes and in most schools we have found that there is a shortage due to six or seven critical subject posts not being filled,” said Van Vuuren. Van Vuuren said he had consulted the pro-
vincial MEC of Education, Mandla Makupula, on whether his office had taken steps on filling substantive vacant posts in the province and utilising the services of excess and displaced teachers. Makhapula replied in a document obtained by the PE Express that his office had permanently employed 1062 temporary teachers since December 2013 and placed 1907 of excess teachers to fill in the substantive posts. “These numbers are not enough and signify only a fraction of what is needed to fill the gaps in schools.” said Van Vuuren. According to him these placements are in other areas and have no impact on the problems faced in local Afrikaans schools. “There are no progressive solutions and decision making by the department. The most that they have done, from of what I have heard, is that the department has requested funding from treasury to finance the post provisions,” he added. One of the schools affected is Gelvandale Primary School, with the principal saying he is now left with no foundation phase teacher for the next term. Principal Pieter Williams said he had been frustrated for years now in dealing with the problems of teacher shortages. “It’s been seven years that our school has been facing the problem of vacant posts. We are in the situation where we have to combine classes because the department refuses to send us teachers,” said Williams. Williams added that having a class with only 35 students was a pipe dream at his
school, with Grades 3 and 4 classes having been combined for years now. “This is a huge frustration for teachers and parents at the school. In 2012 - because of teacher shortages - we raised R100 000 to fill the vacant post at the school but we are unable to do this as a long term goal. I have had numerous discussions with the Education Department at District and Provincial level and no one seems to appreciate the enormity of the schools’ problems. It is an excuse that only Afrikaans schools are greatly impacted by this problem. My school is an English school and we are in the same boat as many of the schools in the district,” said Williams. Kroneberg Primary School in Bethelsdorp said they have four vacant posts and have also lost their foundation phase teacher who retired at the end of the last term. Principal Noël Louis said they have been waiting for teachers to be deployed to their school for years, but correspondence is yet to come from the district as well as the provincial department as to when teachers will be placed at the school. Louis said because the school is in an impoverished area, they are unable to raise funds to get the necessary substitute teachers and the ones they have been able to get at the school are paid less than a stipend. “We are mainly an Afrikaans medium school and we also have had huge difficulties receiving educators from the Department. I cannot even enjoy my holiday this July because I have to worry about what I
will do next term to ensure that my students receive proper and adequate education,” said Louis. Another principal at one of the schools in the northern suburbs, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had lost confidence in the Department of Education. Because of the problems arising from combined classes at his school, many of his students had turned to gangsterism because students had lost all hope in education. Some of the challenges identified by the Department of Education are: . A number of qualified temporary educators who are covered outside the system; . High number of foreign educators amounting to 501, as well as under- and unqualified educators numbering 235; . 719 protected temporary educators in the system; . Anomalies emanating from 2014 post declaration; . Level of commitment by some districts in submitting required information; . Minimal response in the filling of the closed bulletin 2 of 2014; . Schools changing post profiles to bar out application as per the closed bulletin; . Additional serving educators who have FET qualification who do not want to move FET Band. ) After numerous attempts to obtain comment from the South African Democratic Teachers Union there was no reply at the time of going to print.

Boxing fraternity up in arms over plans to close Bay office NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the boxing fraternity in Nelson Mandela Bay are up in arms over the national boxing governing body, Boxing South Africa (BSA)’s decision to close their office in the metro. BSA has sent a letter instructing the local Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza to vacate the office with immediate effect. This was done without explaining the reasons why such a drastic step was taken, save to say it was per the resolution of the board’s meeting held on 4/5 June. The letter, which was seen by PE Express Indaba, urged Mapitiza to deliver all BSA material in his possession to the Eastern Cape Provincial Manager Phakamile Jacobs. “I don’t know what is happening. I received no complaint suggesting that the national office was not happy about anything,” said Mapitiza who has been at the helm as a boxing administrator in the metro since 1987. Mapitiza said, "I was not paid a cent when I started my service to boxing. I did it for free! But now I am getting paid R3 000 a month with which I have to cover travel expenses and do
admin work, make phone calls and send emails and faxes. And now I am given a letter with such a tone that shows anger.” Mapitiza believes if the letter thanked him for his services first, and explained the reasons why they were no longer required, he would have understood. “And if the issue was about money - with them cutting costs, I would have understood too. I am a sportsman and was involved in the sport without being paid. I would offer my services for free to the boxing people of the Bay.” “This is very sad news. It shows that BSA does not care about Nelson Mandela Bay boxing licensees,” a devastated Ndumiso Fina said. Fina said whatever wrong Mapitiza did was not communicated to them as boxing licensees. “The board members don’t pay for licences, we do,” said Fina. According to Fina, the idea of them depending on an East London-based Phakamile Jacobs to pay for licences and submit contracts for fights would be very costly - as it has proven to be in the past. “Apart from all the other expenses, promoters would have to pay for travel expenses,
Train gets ready to race again EXCITEMENT is building in the city for the much anticipated return of the Train Race concept as the inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race gets set to leave the Port Elizabeth station at 9am on July 27. The concept, re-introduced by Zports after an absence of 10 years, will see running teams of seven members taking on a Metro Rail train between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, a distance of approximately 40km. Various categories of entry have been made available to include corporate, social, club and school teams as they challenge each other for trophies and bragging rights in this signature Metro event. Limited to just 300 teams in 2014, the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race is expected to sell out before July, given that over a half of the allotted entries have already been snapped up by local
companies keen to be a part of this awesome team building event. Zports have also made spectator tickets available on the train with less than a third of the 500 tickets remaining. Entry fees started at R350 per team with spectator train tickets only R50 for a return ticket. The Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race also offers companies the opportunity to order custombranded t-shirts with their entry as well as hospitality packages for the finish festival area. NMBT chief executive officer Mandlakazi Skefile said they welcomed the idea of the event as it would continue to promote the region’s status as a popular sporting destination. “NMBT supports the return of the Train Race concept as unique attractions and activities have great importance to market the destination,” said Skefile. The Great Train Race was one of the largest
Housing development grinds to a halt Continued from page 1 But she asked, “Where are those backyard dwellers coming from? Now that they (the concerned group) are in their sites they do not want other people relocated. They beat Nomonde Majikazana, Thabo Matini and Lulama Khawulela among others.” Nomathamsanqa Charles (47) a resident from the opposing side, said “We did not beat them. They are lying. All we’re saying is that Cllr Bungane must recognise the ANC structure led by Simphiwe Tyukana and inform us of the developments. We only stopped people we saw coming into this area without consulting us first. Bungane does not recognise us and our Branch Executive. He must go!” she said. “The Councillor has distanced himself from the people that elected him into power,” said an elderly Mthuthuzeli Tinise (60), adding that he did not like the fights going on in
the ward. Cllr Bungane, the ANC Branch executive, police members and some members of the factions held a meeting from which the media were barred. Attempts to speak to Cllr Bungane were unsuccessful. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu confirmed that some residents were involved in violent attacks against others who were being relocated to the Joe Slovo Area. Relocation then stopped. “Police are still watching the area and there is no sign of violence and intimidation,” said W/O Gwavu on Friday. Meanwhile, ANC regional secretary Zandisile Qupe said as the regional structure they had left the matter to the branch executive to solve and would take over in the event of the branch failing to come up with a solution. “We’ll act if and when the Branch Executive tell us they have exhausted all avenues and now need our assistance,” said Qupe.
meals and accommodation for Jacobs for the two-days of weigh-in and the fight including ring officials. I think this is killing our boxing,” said Fina. BSA Board Chairperson Ntambi Ravele however, saw nothing sinister in the letter. According to Ravele, the move was her board’s idea of putting things in order in the boxing organisation. According to her, The Eastern Cape cannot have two service providers as it is costly and, according to the Auditor-General, a fruitless expenditure. Ravele said the board was trying to clean-up in order to comply with the AG’s legal imperatives. “The argument that the former EP and Border regions used to have their own boards of Commission does not hold water. We can’t go back to the apartheid days,” Ravele said, adding that the Gauteng Service Provider travels 450 km to (Thohoyandou) in Limpopo to assist in that province which does not have its own BSA office. “We have nine provinces which must run their activities effectively. All we require are good management and planning. With good management and planning we can’t go wrong,” said Ravele.

road running events in the province when relay teams raced the Apple Express train between Port Elizabeth and Loerie in 2004. This year a new, sustainable format has been conceived which will become the first major sporting event to incorporate all three towns which make up Nelson Mandela Bay - Port Elizabeth, Despatch and Uitenhage - as relay teams cover the 40km distance between Port Elizabeth station and the Uitenhage Station and will race against a Metro Rail train. Each year the race direction will alternate to create an up and a down run. The first teams are expected to reach Uitenhage Station around 11am and the last teams should be in just before the 1pm prize giving on
the Powerade Stage. A festival of activities will welcome teams at Uitenhage Station including the Castle Lite Beer Garden managed by the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise for charity with lots of food vendors in support. Partnership and branding opportunities have been made available for companies at each of the change-over stations, water points or on train coaches. Any organisations or individuals keen to volunteer their support on the morning are encouraged to contact the organisers through the website. .For online entry, purchase of train tickets and other information, check out the event website on www.nmbTrainRace.co.za. – REPORTER

Help KwaNobuhle police with Police foil cash-in-transit heist and arrest man investigations NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the SAPS in KwaNobuhle are investigating a murder case after a 45 year-old man was found dead in front of a house in Nxukwebe Street on Sunday morning.
busy with investigations and are following up on the leads, said W/O Seekoei. W/O Seekoei asked members of the community who might know of the circumstances leading to the man’s death, to come forward and help police in their investigation.
“A neighbour went to the house which had a home-coming ceremony (umgidi) on Saturday for their son who went for circumcision. “After the festivities people went to sleep on Saturday night and the neighbour was shocked to find this body lying dead in the house yard around 7 am,” said Police Spokesperson W/O Basil Seekoei. Upon investigation, the shocked family identified the body as that of Vuyani Mageja of Nakani Street. “Nobody knows what happened. We are
) In a separate incident, an electrical fault was blamed for a fire that burnt down a shack, killing a pregnant mother and her two toddlers in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage on Saturday evening. According to W/O Seekoei, Nwabisa Mpuntya (25) and her two young children, aged 2 and 4, were sleeping when the fire broke out. The fire totally destroyed the shack. “No crime is suspected,” said W/O Seekoei, adding that an inquest docket was opened for investigation.
More bogus ‘surgeons’ to be arrested SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE SPOKESPERSON for the Eastern Cape department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mamkeli Ngam, has vowed that more arrests of bogus traditional surgeons in the Libode area would follow. Ngam’s utterance follows the arrest of a traditional surgeon, Samkelo Mvubu, who has been charged by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on two counts of murder. Ngam said he was collecting information and was communicating with the Libode police ahead of the expected arrests of at least four more bogus surgeons in the region. Mvubu appeared in the Libode Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday. It is alleged that Mvubu circumcised two of the initiates who have died this initiation season. The murder cases emanate from the discovery of the two dead bodies by the police at an illegal circumcision school. According to NPA regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, in addition to the two counts of murder, Mvubu is also facing two counts of contravening the Health Standards Traditional Circumcision Act No 6 of 2001. Meanwhile, in the same court of the district of Libode, on Thursday, July 03, three male
teenagers (16-17) appeared on charges of unlawful circumcision for circumcising another boy (16). The young initiate was rescued by the police and is currently in a serious condition in the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha. The three teenagers were not released into the custody of their parents, but were instead referred to the Bosasa Place of Safety in Mthatha, until their next court appearance on July 10. Tyali said the NPA was taking these circumcision-related cases very seriously. “We will vigorously prosecute all circumci sion-related cases without fear, favour or prejudice. And where convictions are secured we shall argue for the harshest possible sentences. We appeal to members of the public, especially parents, to be vigilant and to expose these bogus traditional surgeons and nurses,” he said. At the time of going to print, 24 initiates have died in the Eastern Cape with at least 131 being hospitalised or kept at rescue centres. The premier of the Eastern Cape and the MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Fikile Xasa, was expected to address the media yesterday.

A 25 year-old man was arrested by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) after a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Port Elizabeth last Wednesday. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, the man allegedly overpowered a G-Force Security Guard who had come out of the shops at Ziyabuya Shopping Complex, KwaDwesi and grabbed his .38 Special revolver. The security guard was carrying cash collected from one of the shops in the complex. “He (the suspect) then grabbed a bag full of cash and ran away crossing Uitenhage Road towards the bushes on top of KwaMagxaki,” said W/O Gwavu, adding that five shots fired by other guards at the running suspect missed. The suspect was, however, not lucky as members of the Organised Crime coming from Uitenhage saw him on the run and started chasing. At this stage the runaway suspect, who was caught by members of the Organised Crime Unit, had managed to change his clothing. How he did it, is a mystery. He still had the bag full of cash and the firearm with him. According to Gwavu, the suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon facing charges of cash-in-transit robbery and being in possession of an illegal firearm. Gwavu said it was not clear whether the suspect was alone or with accomplices when he committed the crimes. “We are investigating,” he said. CAUGHT...Cash-in-transit-heist suspect was caught near bushes in KwaMagxaki.

Port Elizabeth entrepreneurs excel at the ENGEN Pitch & Polish workshop REPORTER CELEBRATING five years of polishing entrepreneurial pitches, the ENGEN Pitch and Polish 2014 programme was attended by eager entrepreneurs at the first event, held in Port Elizabeth. Almost 300 people filled the Feather Market Convention Centre with a keen interest in learning how to pitch their businesses successfully. The day began with delegates watching a clip, which captured the essence of events from previous years, setting the scene of what could be expected. Stephen Reid, Business Incubator Manager from Raizcorp facilitated the workshop and competition and guided the delegates throughout the day. It was soon evident that the workshop is an active process where each individual is stretched and pushed towards a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship and business. Project Manager from the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, Glenton De Kock, said it was a gruelling day of pitching for Asa Mazomba, Loyiso Gongqa, Luvuyo Ponase, Lezáne van Niekerk and Siphamandla Javu. They shared the stage and braved the audience-cum-investors’ polishing and difficult questions. Their initial 30 second pitches were fleshed out to become well-rounded
three minute pitches delivered to judges, Lungile Dumse, Human Capital General Manager, Engen Petroleum Ltd; Glenton De Kock, Project Manager, Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber and Vernon Naidoo, Manager: VW Community Trust. Throughout the day, delegates diligently filled in their worksheets to compile their individual pitches. Characteristic to this format, is that entrepreneurs are given feedback on their pitches, there and then. The truth, whether harsh or positive, is shared in the moment so that the kinks can be ironed out and the brightness turned up. De Kock said, “It is remarkable what can be achieved in eight hours. Those who have invested the time in being here today, are walking out knowing which area of their business needs work.” Engen Petroleum Ltd, partnered with business incubator, Raizcorp, and media partner SAfm, as well as local partners, Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, SEDA and Kingfisher FM. De Kock said the workshop and competition continues to be a highlight for entrepreneurs, where they can have their ideas brainstormed, tested and challenged – and ultimately to polish their pitch. Through to Round 2, from Port Elizabeth, are Mazomba, Ponase and Javu.

Magqabi Primary receives sports kit from Bridge Loans NCEBA DLADLA KWANOBUHLE’s Magqabi Primary School pupils involved in sports were visited by a Good Samaritan recently. The management of Bridge Loans in Uitenhage handed over sports kit last week to benefit both boys and girls of the school’s football and netball teams. “The donation was part of our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative aimed at uplifting members of the community in which we live and work,” said Bridge Loans Branch Manager Rufane Oerson. Oerson said his company first sponsored the school with furniture. But when a School Governing Body (SGB) member and teacher at the school Monde Mtywaru pleaded with them recently to support their sports teams with kit, they obliged and were happy to have made a difference. “We are a school that tries to take part in all kinds of sports but lacks the necessary resources. Our children love sport but
struggle to have all the necessary requirements,” said teacher Phindiwe Tetiwe. Tetiwe, who is a Magqabi Primary School Sports coach and looks after the school’s kit, said their boys’ and girls’ soccer teams were using the same kit to play matches. This became a big problem when both boys and girls teams played at the same time. “Our netball kit was old and worn-out. We’re pleased that now we have new kit. Our teams are excited too and will surely up their game,” said Tetiwe. Magqqabi principal Siphiwo Hoho thanked Bridge Loans for the support. It will make a big difference in the school, he said. “We are working together in very many other projects with Bridge Loans and are happy they are keeping their side of the bargain - by ploughing back into the community. They adopted us and are now proving that our relationship with them is alive,” said a delighted Hoho.

DDT Jabavu learners are focused on matric pass NCEBA DLADLA THE problem that a few matric learners of DDT Jabavu High School in NU5, Swartkops Valley in Motherwell had to face regarding their Geography lessons has been solved. The learners are now looking forward to passing the subject and Grade 12, ultimately. They want to achieve greatness in life, through education. “We have been attending classes every week day and weekend to ensure that we
pass all our matric subjects including Geography,” said Grade 12 learner Mawethu Mahlulo. According to Mahlulo, there were “complications” in Geography which did not make it easy for the teacher and the learners to work well together. Mahlulo wouldn’t explain, but he was quick to add, “We finally found one another and are now busy doing a catch-up programme.” Mahlulo assured PE Express Indaba that they wanted to pass matric, adding that they attended school even during public
holidays such as Youth Day, June 16. “We had to solve our problems because we need education. Education is the key to success. Without education, especially in this new dispensation, you cannot succeed,” said Nomveliso Sisusa, another Grade 12 pupil. According to her, they want to get to the top because the bottom is too crowded for them. “I’d like to become an architect, Graphic Designer or Visual Artist. I can’t get there if I am still locked in unneccesary deliberations about the subject. I need it to pass matric,” said Sakhe Ntongana, also in matric.

FC Buffalo to participate in national promotional playoffs SELBY MADIKANE NELSON Mandela Bay born and bred FC Buffalo (FCB) coach Eddie Dyaloyi has realized his dreams of taking his Buffalo Metropolitan City side to play in the SAFA Second Division Promotional Playoffs to National First Division in Durban from 21-27 July.
Angavu Stars under Coach Mondli Funani have lost the chance of trying luck in the promotional playoffs because FCB won protest against following their failure (Stars) to provide security to players when they played against each other in Queenstown some time ago. According to SAFA Eastern Cape General Secretary Isaac Klaas, FCB goalkeeper was injured in the incident. Klaas said, “FC Buffalo won their case against Angavu Stars and they were awarded three points by SAFA. The case was a failure by Angavu Stars to provide security which resulted in the FC Buffalo goalkeeper being injured. This is Rule 24.2.1 of SAFA Uniform Rules and regulations. The case was dealt with by SAFA Head Office on 28 June 2014.” As things stand, Angavu have to campaign in ABC Motsepe Second Division in the 2014/2015 season.
M’well girls receive bicycles from Siyanqoba and Continental Tyres NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Siyanqoba Community Development Trust is on a mission to spread the love of cycling to the township youth, especially young girls. Cycling South Africa was concerned that there were fewer Africans involved in the sport and that females were close to non-existent, according to Siyanqoba’s Xolisa Konza. Speaking to PE Express Indaba recently, Konza said with the help of Continental Tyres they were able to sponsor seven bicycles to the young Motherwell girls who were interested in the sport. He said, “We have found a few young girls who were interested in cycling and with the aim to grow the sport in the Nelson Mandela Bay Townships we asked Continental Tyres for support. They donated seven bicycles which we gave to the club in Motherwell.” The hand over of the bicycles at the NU13
Motherwell Community recently was a resounding success, according to Yster Xatasi, also from the NGO Siyanqoba. “The hand over of the bicycles and the official launch of the Pilot Project by Siyanqoba was a resounding success. There’s so much interest among the young people of Motherwell. They are welcome to join us,” said Xatasi. The Siyanqoba Community Development Trust leadership was aware that bicycles were very expensive to buy and service, according to Xatasi. With more community assistance and business support, more young girls would find something more exciting to look forward to - other than going to school - and that could make the load a little easier for Siyanqoba, said Xatasi. “We want to thank Continental Tyres for the support and wish to invite other members of big business for support. This is one of the many ways in-which we could uplift our young women and re-integrate our society,” said Xatasi. Siyanqoba’s Yster Xatasi and Xolisa Konza.PHOTO:

Wesley Guild Annual Tournament results SELBY MADIKANE JOHN Wesley Church youth in KwaNobuhle organised a successful John Wesley Guild Annual Football Tournament at Jabavu Stadium recently. The tournament formed part of fund-raising efforts of the Wesley Guild and also to keep the youth off the streets. The event turned out to be a resounding success as 24 teams participated. Most teams which played in the tournament were NODEFA affiliates, African Chiefs; Academy Youngsters (LAROFA), John Wesley Guild team, Transnet FC and
Eastcape Midlands College (EMC) team. The semifinals games were humdingers. As a result fans were sent into raptures. EMC stunned the high-riding Highland Spurs when they eliminated them 1-0 in the semifinals. Young Cosmos threw everything into the game but despite their good efforts, they went down 2-0 to Jamaican Stars in the last semifinals. In the finals the students gave Stars a tough time in their 1-1 drawn game which ended in the penalty shootout with Stars winning the contest 5-4. Jamaican Stars went home with the floating trophy and gold medals while EMC settled for silver medals.

The tournament commenced with a round robin and ended up in a knockout stage where the group leaders took each other on in the finals. International Judo tournament gets Bay boost NCEBA DLADLA THE 2014 National SA Judo Championships that are currently being held at the NMMU Missionvale Campus until Saturday July 12 received a major boost from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, said Mayoral spokesperson Kupido Baron. According to Baron, R 235 000 was approved by the Committee for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture last week. Judo, added Baron, had been identified as one of the priority codes in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP). A delighted First Vice-President of Judo South Africa, Lindisipho Tyatya commended the metro municipality for the financial injection, adding that it would go a long way towards making the tournament a success. “Our Executive decided to bring the tournament back to Nelson Mandela Bay after an extraordinary tournament last year decorated by the fantastic facilities and entertainment offered locally,” said Tyatya. There were more than 7 000 people expected to visit this city during this tournament, according to Tyatya, a Department of Sport, Arts and Recreation official Tyatya.
Explaining, he said, those included participants, Judo officials and supporters. Tyatya had no doubt that this year’s participants would improve upon last year’s 1 800 participants. “Judo supporters must come in droves to support this tournament. We are having on our shores the best Judokas from across Africa,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Judo Chairman Mthunzi Mapitiza. According to Mapitiza, it is countries like Seychelles, Swaziland, Botswana, Mauritius, Mozambique, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Burundi taking part with South Africa. Portfolio Chairperson for Sport, Arts and Culture, Cllr Nomamerica Soul, said the benefits that this event brings to the city far outweigh the municipality’s financial contribution. “The championships are an excellent marketing platform and the visitors are exposed to our pristine tourism infrastructure and facilities. Our hosting of this important event for the second year in a row did not come without competition from other South African cities but the local Nelson Mandela Bay Judo structure, supported by Judo SA, played a very strategic and critical role to ensure that we are once again the host city. This deserves appreciation,” Cllr Soul added.
Students dimmed Stars SELBY MADIKANE VODACOM NMMU Madibaz showed that they had what it takes to dim KwaDwesi All Stars in their Port Elizabeth Football Association (PEFA) Premier League game which was played at Kemsley Park. The Students did not find it difficult to thump the KwaDwesi lads 6-1 in their one-sided game. All Stars need to go to their drawing board following a string of losses in their games. A fortnight ago All Stars were defeated 3-2 by PE Homerovers. Warriors waged war on

Motherwell Academy which they outclassed 3-1. It seemed as if the two sides were playing finals when Central Acemates managed to snatch a narrow 3-2 victory from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality at Westbourne Oval Stadium. PEFA Premier League champions Hearts who participated in SAFA NMB SAB Promotional Playoffs, appeared to be tired following their 4-1 drubbing by the Londt Park Callies. Another KwaDwesi side, Forresters, fought like wounded lions when they overcame Highbury 2-1. PE Defence redeemed themselves in their 2-0 triumph over the PE Homerovers.
SELBY MADIKANE NORTHERN Areas Football Association (NAFA’s) newly promoted side Fairdene make their mark in their first season. Having played more than six games in the NAFA Premier League, Fairdene have surprised the football pundits by maintaining their unbeaten record up to now. Fairdene have recently collected maximum three points when they edged out Westlake 1-0 in their enterprising game. Having dropped points in their recent games, Black-
pool were defeated 1-0 by Fairview Rovers in their own back yard. Park United gave a good account of themselves in their well-deserved 3-0 win over Wolves. At least a goalless draw meant a lot to Hotspurs when they took on Bloom Callies. Saints secured a hard-fought 1-0 away win over Booysens Pride. Ebenezer could not settle the nerves of their die-hard supporters in their 2-0 loss to the gutsy Glenville Celtic. Both teams, Shamrocks and Stardrift, gave up a good fight in their 1-1 drawn game. Helenvale were on top gear when they humiliated Chatty United 4-0.
College earned a narrow victory from Mommy SELBY MADIKANE SCORES spectators braved the chilly weather conditions when Young Collegians beat Motherwell United 24-21 in their Adams Cup rugby clash at Zwide Stadium on Saturday. Young Collegians who are affectionately known as College used the wind advantage in the first half with their wing Sandile Mdesha scoring an opening try which Sinethemba Skelem converted to put his side 7-0 up in front. Mommy, as United are popularly called by their supporters, came up with a penalty taken by their scrumhalf Andile Krune to reduce the deficit to 7-3. College came up with another try scored by Thando Zolelo to take the score to 12-3. Krune
successfully took their penalty to decrease once again the deficit to 12-6, and both sides went to the break with the Zwide side leading. Zolelo finished his brace when he scored an unconverted try with the scoreboard reading 17-6. But United were not finished as they pulled a try which came courtesy of Luzuko Gqamana to make the score 17-11. Krune made no mistake in extending the score to 17-14. College scored their last try courtesy of their flank Loyiso Lukwe and Skelem converted the try to put his 24 -14 ahead. Motherwell boys came up strongly in so much that their hard-working flank Sithembiso Sigutya scored their final try converted by Krune to make the final score 24-21. College forwards worked overtime as their counterparts piled more pressure in the last stages of the game. Indeed it was a really tough game as both sides played running and attacking rugby. In the reserves section Collegians fought bravely to conquer United 12-7. College take on Kwaru at Dan Qeqe on Saturday while United face Zwide United next Saturday.

Glenville Celtic FC Junior Tournament results GLENVILLE Celtic Football Club decided to keep the youth off the streets during the school holiday by staging a week long youth tournament at Gelvan Fields from 30 June to 4 July 2014. Hundreds of youth who were so enthusiastic watched their sides, with their parents supporting them. However, two Cape Town sides Macassar and Two Oceans also took part in the tournament.
