Deputy Minister teaches PE residents how to fish for food security NCEBA DLADLA

D

EPUTY Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Hendrieta BogopaneZulu, was in Nelson Mandela Bay last week to launch a food security programme for the benefit of the poor in Missionvale, Port Elizabeth. Missionvale was identified as one of the poorest areas in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP), according the Honourable Deputy Minister. Bogopane-Zulu said her visit to the metro municipality in partnership with the private sector’s Mango Airlines CEO Nico Bezuidenhout to install two hydroponic vegetable gardens at the Missionvale Care Centre was government’s idea of teaching communities how to fish instead of giving them fish. The plan, she said, was contained in President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma’s State of the Nation Address to bring relief to the needy. “We have come here to establish a community garden to ensure food security for the poor, elderly, women, children and people with disabilities in this area. This is about community involvement and community development,” said Bogopane-Zulu proudly. “I am rural girl from the Northwest. I know the importance of having a food bank through gardening,” said the Deputy Minister, adding that this was the eleventh garden she planted in the country since the start of the project. The Deputy Minister was optimistic, she said, that members of the community would use the garden toward a healthy living. Guided by the leadership of the Missionvale Care Centre which is headed by the philanthropist and human-rights advocate Sr Ethel Normoyle, local residents were expected to eat fresh vegetables from the garden and sell what remains of the produce. “For us this was an ethical thing to do. We are happy we can make the difference in the lives of the poor and needy -to plant food that

would nourish their bodies,” said Nico Bezuidenhout. “This is fabulous, an unbelievable gift for us. People will eat and sell and would be able to send their children to school,” said Sr

Nominate Eastern Cape legends for inclusion on the roll of honour NCEBA DLADLA WHAT do names like Walter Rubusana, Cecilia Makiwane, Donald Woods, Nkosana Mgxaji, Clemens Kadalie and Jakes Gerwel have in common? They are the heroes and heroines of the Eastern Cape who contributed immensely in the making of this province, The Home of Legends that it is, in different spheres of life. Some in Sports, like Mgxaji, others in the liberation struggle like Kadalie and Journalism, like Woods. Premier of the Eastern Cape Noxolo Kiviet is calling on people to nominate such people

during this Heritage Month to celebrate those “extraordinary” figures from history as legends for inclusion in a provincial roll of honour. The call to nominate the legends is referred to as the Second Phase of the Home of Legends programme in which every citizen of the province had a right to participate. The First Phase was launched at Mqhekezweni vilage near Mthatha last year, and it was very successful, according to the Premier. “We introduced the campaign by drawing attention to the Eastern cape’s significant contribution to the leadership of the freedom struggle - from Tambos, Mandelas, Sisulus, Hanis, Mbekis, Mhlabas, Bikos and Sobu-

kwes,” said Premier Kiviet. Explaining, the Premier said, “These are national icons of our history. Their names are synonimous the world over with our liberation from racial tyranny. Their contribution was not only limited to the Eastern Cape or country but the entire continent and the world at large.” Kiviet urged all citizens of the province to nominate and rationalise the inclusion of those who qualify to be nominated. Home of Legends nomination forms are available at all police stations across the province from this Month. Alternatively, people can text 34524, visiting www.exprov.gov.za or on Facebook.

M’well School get a huge boost from ‘PE Express’ readers LIZEKA TANDWA COSELELANI High School in Motherwell is the second school to receive book donations by PE Express readers. The school’s English teachers said the books would boost up the spirit in their student development pilot project. Coselelani has been struggling to get donations of reading books that could help with their new project to enhance reading and extra curricular activities that connect with reading. English teacher Langa Tshangana, said after the success of the school’s debate club, they decided to branch out and create a student development club which would focus on educational activities such as, poetry, book club, environmental club and career guidance. “We are at a disadvantage as a township school because we do not have the resources that former Model-C schools have. When we

saw the enthusiasm of the kids to learn, we decided to for clubs that would help them get more creative in their reading and writing,” said Tshangana. Tshangana said the school has been knocking on deaf ears trying to get people to donate books but they were unsuccessful. Principal Mzwandile Njenje said the pupils needed to make use of the donation by reading and forming clubs that would develop their reading and writing, “The responsibility of these books are in the hands of the students. They need to utilise the books to their advantage,” said Njenje. Grade 11 pupil, Zongeziwe Sokomani, said she was motivated by the donation to her school and the club, “ We are motivated by what we see and the drive from PE Express readers, these books will ensure that we strive for more at our school,” said Sokomani. This campaign will be running for the rest of the year and books can still be dropped off at PE Express offices at the Ton Vosloo Media Centre. For more info call 0 041 503 6057.

Ubuntu helps the community get educated NCEBA DLADLA UBUNTU Education Fund in the dusty streets of Zwide Township in Port Elizabeth continues to make the difference in the lives of the young and old whose desire is education. The centre believes in the adage that says, education is the key to success, and theirs, as Nobesuthu Sonti, the institution’s Training Coordinator summed it up, is a holistic approach that starts an aspirant from cradle to career. Dealing with poor and the most vulnerable members of the community, Sonti said they start children from the mother’s womb,

own work through a small business enterprise. “Sometimes, a child heads a family,” Sonti said, adding that in that case, that child, like an adult, is also advised about taking part in the drop in classes which are aimed at skilling individuals for better job prospects or selfemployment. “The drop-in programme we offer is for skills development for income generation,” said Sonti. Explaining, she said those are knitting, beadwork, Cooking and baking as well as Computer Literacy. To be enrolled in the programme one must be registered with Ubuntu Education Fund (which is in January) and be a committed individual. The facilitators of the programmes are highly dedicated individuals who love their jobs of making the difference in the community,” said Sonti proundly.

through clinic interventions, at birth and at kindergarten up to university. They also offer after-school programmes to sharpen the skills of the youth, hence from cradle to career. Graduates, however, are also assisted with finding employment at Ubuntu Education Fund. “We don’t only focus on children, because children need to come from stable families to be able to focus on their dreams,” explained Sonti, adding that Ubuntu Education Fund does a survey on the household from which a child comes to look at his or her needs. They then take the care-givers of the families to provide them with training that would help them earn a living or if not, create their

Sun International CSI team beautifies Gelvandale Frail Care INDABA REPORTER SUN International’s team of Corporate Social Investment practitioners from 21 of the group’s properties did a spring cleaning and repainting the Gelvandale Frail Care Centre last Tuesday, September 3. They were supported by The Boardwalk service providers Khangela and Real Langa Landscapers. The practitioners from around the country were in Port Elizabeth for a Sun International conference held in The Boardwalk’s International Convention Centre. Sun International manages The Boardwalk in partnership with black empowerment company Emfuleni Resorts. Khangela staff heled spring clean the centre, while Real Langa cut the grass and tidied up

the gardens. Residents of the centre were also treated to slippers, shampoo, conditioners and other luxuries donated by The Boardwalk Hotel. “In 2012 as our 67 minutes for Madiba, The Boardwalk donated R200 000 worth of kitchen equipment, and 30 members of staff helped repaint the home where the care centre is situated,” said The Boardwalk CSI Manager Peggy Mokhatla. The care centre offers 24 hour support for the aged who are unable to care for themselves. Founded in 1979, it is managed by the community and is reliant on a government subsidy and donations and assistance from the public. All of the residents in the frail care centre, which has a capacity for 115 people, are dependent on their pension and are unable to contribute to the maintenance and restoration of the home.

tinental Tyres and Al Fidaa Foundation for thinking about us for this good gesture. We really appreciate it,” said St Thomas High School teacher Craig van Niekerk. Van Niekerk said a lot of his school-children take part in sports like netball, cricket, soccer and hockey but lack the means to buy some of the very necessary regalia and equipment, so this assistance will make the difference. He said they have applied their minds in terms of choosing who to receive the takkies and were aware also that they could not give to everyone. “From the principal, the members of staff, members of the School Governing Body and learners of the school we are really happy and believe the takkies will really help,” said van Niekerk who is also the school’s disciplinarian.

Held in conjunction with the SA Library for the Blind (SALB) at the Red Location Museum in New Brighton Port Elizabeth, this year’s National Book Week highlighted the importance of Braille and Audio because, “Everyone has a right to read including the sight impaired, and this year we were teaching sighted and sight-impaired people to read,” said SA Library Head Ria Greaves. The stands at the museum featured lots of information material about the library service and assistance devices which help to make printed material accessible to the blind and print-handicapped.

It was a welcoming and all-inclusive atmosphere with various activities for people of different languages (isiXhosa, English and Afrikaans) and cultural backgrounds. Greaves was overjoyed because this year’s National Book Week was geared specifically towards providing insight into how partially sighted and impaired people experience the world and use technology and braille to read and become literate. The SALB sponsored 14 learners in Grades 7 and 8 rom Khanyisa School for the Blind to be part of the Book Week activities. She explained, “Reading is a crucial part of empowerment. All should have attended the National Book Week which was also to showcase South African writers, publishers, book sellers and related businesses.” This year’s National Book Week celebrated books as instruments for education, culture, heritage and economic progress.

BSA licensees meeting called at Despatch this weekend NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay boxing licensees are called to a report back meeting that will be held at Khayamnandi Community Hall in Despatch, this Sunday, September 15, starting at 9 am. The meeting will be giving a report-back to the Boxing South Africa (BSA) Provincial Indaba held at Mpekweni Resort two weekends ago. All boxers, managers, trainers, promoters and ring officials were expected to attend the meeting, said BSA Ring Official Stembiso Kiti who is part of the organisers of the meeting. According to Kiti, this very important meeting was supposed to be held last weekend but they decided to postpone it owing to the boxers belonging to the Nelson Man-

dela Metro Amateur Boxing Organisation going to represent the metro in the Eastern Cape Games held in Grahamstown last weekend. “We expect all licensees to attend this meeting, especially boxers. The theme of this year’s Boxing Indaba is about the boxers, and boxers came in numbers in Port Alfred (Mpekweni), so we expect them to come so that they know exactly what is happening with their sport,” said Kiti. BSA Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza will be present at the meeting scheduled to discuss also the importance of this area having a physical address in the not too distant future. “We’ll also talk about the possibility of having an office for BSA business in this meeting. It is high time that we had an office for our administration,” said Mapitiza.
