SASSA brings relief through services on wheels NCEBA DLADLA THE South African Social Security Services Agency (SASSA) Eastern Cape was in the Bay last week to offer their much needed services to the residents as part of celebrating International Nelson Mandela Day.
Hundreds of KwaNobuhle residents came for the Sassa event at Sizakele Konzi Hall last Thursday.

According to SASSA provincial spokesperson Rev Luzuko Qina, issues relating to health were high on the core-SASSA business. They had noted, he said, that those were not easily accessible to members of the community. “Fifty wards in the province were identified as living below the poverty line and we are here now as part of the war-room under the office of the Deputy President (Cyril Ramaphosa) to bring relief to those wards in Nelson Mandela metro,” said Qina last Thursday. Speaking during the event held at Sizakele Konzi Community Hall in KwaNobuhle Uitenhage, Qina said this cluster brought the same services on wheels to Kuyga and Motherwell in Port Elizabeth during the previous days. SASSA joined forces with some Nelson Mandela Bay councillors and government officials
from the Social Development and Special Programmes, Health, SAPS and Home Affairs Departments (making the cluster) spending the whole of last week bringing services on wheels to the residents. Those in need of Birth Certificates, Identity Documents, Affidavits and Social Grants were assisted while those with questions were given straight answers by councillors, Loyiso Stemele, Thembisile Gana, Andile Gqabi, Manci Booi and Monde Vaaltyn. Qina said this initiative was presented to local government to run and councillors ensured that residents attended. “I’ve got a water leak problem in my house. It’s water coming from other streets but it’s damaging my property,” said Lulama Mali (46) of Zingela Crescent who was in need of urgent help. “I’ve come to apply for a social grant,” said Bukeka Gxambuza (39) from Gunguluza while Mzukisi Mdaniswano (65) of Mdledle Street came to discuss his water charge which was “too high for a pensioner.” Qina told the residents that SASSA did not sell airtime nor an insurance policy as other people were made to believe.
SAMWU on verge of intensifying strike LIZEKA TANDWA LABOUR brokers and privatisation in the safety and security cluster of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality are just some of the key issues SAMWU said they are discussing with their members before they intensify their strike against the municipality. This came out on Monday at a SAMWU shop stewards meeting to finalise details on how they would go forward in what their regional

office said was the plight of their workers. Regional chairman, Xolani Tom, said during their meeting they had decided on different programmes which they would be highlighting at a constituency meeting this week before their general meeting next week Monday, where their primary objection would be to get the go ahead from members to intensify the strike action demanding backpay and getting rid of privatisation. “We will be talking with our members this week about further steps we can take with their

safety and security officers locked four municipal buildings in protest last week. “The Order interdicts the respondents from injuring, threatening or intimidating any person or persons, either employees or members of the public, who are present at or wish to gain access to Municipal buildings. In addition, it bars anyone from unlawfully demonstrating, gathering, marching on or damaging any part of a municipal property, as well as preventing anyone from interfering with or inciting any person to act unlawfully,” said Williams. Tom however denied any violent act by SAMWU members saying the members who took part in the industrial action against the Metro were provoked by the city’s politicians who came out of the municipal building inciting violence. “None of our members is interested in acts of violence. This is a situation that has affected all our workers and all they want is the money that is owed to them. What angers our members is the lack of respect from the Municipality. We have heard no concrete reasons as to why there has been no payment for the Safety and Security workers,” said Tom. Municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said their negotiations with the employee representatives were in a sensitive stage and they would not like to jeopardise their discussions by talking about it to the media. “The municipality is engaging with the representatives of the employees involved to try to resolve the challenge,” he said.

approval. We also want to hear about their most significant problems with the Municipality. What we know now is that our members are not happy with the Municipality privatizing its safety and security cluster,” said Tom. Tom said the municipality had turned down all of their demands so far. The strike, which is over safety and security workers’ backpay for more than three years, was characterised by violence as municipal offices were closed by the strikers. This resulted in the municipality obtaining a court order. om, T said they might intensify their strike against the Municipality if their demands are not met. Tom said striking workers had been fighting with the municipality for years now trying to get backpay they said they were owed for between 2010 and July last year – after they were upgraded to the same salaries as other security and traffic officers in the metro. The Municipality, however, as a counter attack against the striking workers on Tuesday, July 15, obtained a court order interdicting persons from participating in unlawful activities at NMBM buildings which had led to delayed service delivery. Municipal Director of Communications, Roland Williams, said the order was wideranging and enabled the Municipality to continue to serve the people of Nelson Mandela Bay and ensured that municipal buildings were accessible to the public who relied on the Municipality for basic services. This came after reports that hundreds of

MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Nelson Mandela Bay have noted a sudden increase in the incidence of vehicle burglaries. “We are concerned as valuable personal items like cellphones, laptops and other electronic devices are being stolen with no visible signs of forced entry into the vehicles,” said Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg. The SAPS, according to Janse van Rensburg, are urging motorists and community members not to leave valuables in parked vehicles. “Motorists are also urged to always ensure that their vehicle doors are locked after pressing the remote key to lock the car,”she said, adding that this could be done by physically checking to ensure that the doors were locked. Janse van Rensburg pleaded with community members to ensure that they played their role in the fight against crime. The police further gave the following safety hints: • Ensure you lock your doors and gates
when you leave. • If you are going to be away for a long time, consider leaving someone to look after your house • You can also request your relative or neighbours to help you switch on the lights in the evening and off during the day • Ensure that you have burglar proofing as it has proved in many cases to be an effective deterrent to potential burglaries. • Having a dog may also be a deterrent. A barking dog can alert an entire block if something is awry • Don’t leave anything to chance. When leaving your house double check whether all the doors, gates and windows are locked to ensure maximum safety • Communities are advised also to conduct their own neighbourhood watches. When they notice a suspicious activity, they must quickly report to the nearest police station. • Communities must report at their nearest police stations and to notify when leaving their homes. • Lastly, communities with Community Police Forums must work with these structures to report crimes committed and crime related activities happening within their precincts.

Child Care Facilities, Water and Sanitation as well as Waste Management among others. “We also talked about the prevention of communicable diseases and how to stop their spread,” said Gqubule, adding that after getting notification from the committee made up of health practitioners that include doctors and nurses, they investigate and report to the residents. According to Gqubule, the biggest problem facing local communities was lack of information and negligence. She said they were always ready to give information as they worked hand in glove with the doctors, nurses, the private and public health practitioners Gqubule said Ward Councillors, like Loyiso Stemele, usually invited her office to do some presentations and was happy that KwaNobuhle residents were by far the most informed.
KWANOBUHLE residents were given information about public health issues at the Sizakele Konzi Community Hall last Thursday. Senior Environmental Health Practitioner in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Thethiwe Gqubule spent some time explaining to residents the importance of living in a healthy environment. “I gave a brief presentation on what we are doing which is basically to enforce Health Regulation and Municipal By Laws,” said Gqubule. During the event she spoke about food labelling and the legal requirement for foodstuffs in terms of food regulations as well as the Municipal by-laws that include Municipal Health Nuisances, Animal Establishments, Accommodation Establishments,

number of projects in the month of July but Friday the 18th was the pinnacle as massive projects were held especially in the local townships. The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in partnership with Nelson Mandela Bay spent their 67 minutes for Mandela cleaning the Grogro Kwazakhele area in Ward 18. A new house built by the Coega Development Corporation was handed over to an elderly woman in the area while metro officials renovated three houses, among other activities. ANC General Secretary Gwede Mantashe was in the Bay at a Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture at Kuyga Community Hall. Ward 17 Councillor Ncediso Captain, with the help of a private company, handed over mattresses, books and other valuable materials to the needy, including the Sekunjalo Creche in the Chris Hani area. Mama Sheila Isaacs, the founder and head of the Mother’s Gift, a Non-Profitmaking Organisation (NPO) in KwaNobuhle, spent her 67 minutes feeding more than 500 destitute members of the area at Sizakele Konzi Community Hall. Local gospel sensation Andile B entertained them with music. “Tata Madiba taught us so many things. One of those is sharing what you have with those who don’t have. The whole world is celebrating Mandela Bay and this idea of doing good for others,” said Mama Sheila. She added, “We prepared a meal for about 200 people – the elderly and children – but over 400 came. We’re trying to organise them party packs.”
Mothers Gift celebrated Mandela Day with the poor in the community. Mama Sheila thanked McDonalds, Shoprite, Spar, FNB and Umhlobo Wenene FM Breakfast Show co-host BEE Putco Mafani among others for support. “I appreciate what Mama Sheila’s doing, putting the elderly under one roof and enter-

Big gospel choir planned for the Bay NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay will soon be home to a huge gospel choir in the same vein as Joyous Celebration. This was revealed by local gospel sensation Andile Bebula aka Andile B. According to Andile B, a renowned national artist from Motherwell in Port Elizabeth, plans are afoot for the start of Nelson Mandela Bay metro’s 40-member choir with a five-piece band to be an answer to the huge Mthunzi Namba and Jabu Mahlangu’s Joyous Celebration. “We’re waiting for the confirmation of sponsorship to start with auditions for this 40-member choir,” said Andile. Andile has been in the music industry since 1994 when he took part in the Shell Road to Fame Talent Search Competition. “We are looking for men and women of between 18 and 40 years of age who can sing,” said Andile, adding that the Choir will be named Harmonic Heritage. One of the Choir’s board members, Wandile Mbolompo, said the name comes from the music heritage that is found in Nelson Mandela Bay and the fact that harmonious music has always been part of that heritage. “This is long overdue,” said Andile. Andile B, who is a devout Christian, was born in Alexandria in the Ndlambe Local Municipality and grew up in KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage. In his illustrious career so far, he is behind songs like Akuvumi, Ke Tsamaya Le Jeso and Iculo Lam, which was part of Joyous Celebration 4. He has recorded more than 10 gospel albums, including a best selling Live DVD. Andile wants to give back to the commu-
nity. This city is awash with talent that must be identified and harnessed, according to Andile. He said, “There’ll be job opportunities created with this choir. Watch this space. Nelson Mandela Bay will never be the same!” said Andile B.

With a little help, Kuyasa Cultural Group is destined for greatness NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay cultural group Kuyasa has a bright future and those who have seen this Motherwell group’s dance, music and acting prowess will agree. Kuyasa, aptly meaning, the beginning of the new dawn, are fast-paced traditional dancers who can easily, and quickly, transcend from Marabi of the 1950s to modern day dance wowing the crowds wherever they perform. This NU11 Motherwell 42-member group has performed before huge crowds all over the Eastern Cape province as well as in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The group’s founder, trainer and leader Nontembeko Mlibali (42) who was born and bred in Dutywa in the former Transkei, started the group in 1997 when she saw young children roaming the streets and some being involved in drugs and crime. She started it with eight members. “The biggest problem in the area is unemployment and poverty. Many young and old people drink. I saw the children loitering in the streets and I decided to start this cultural group - in order to keep them occupied,” explained Mlibali who was herself a prolific dancer. The youngest member of the group is 9years old whilst the eldThe Kuyasa Cultural Group in action on stage.

est is 42 years old. Most of the members are still at school. Mlibali teaches them folklore ukubholorha, ukungqungqa nokutshotsha among others. “We have been to a number of competitions, provincially and nationally including Zindala Zombini in Mahikeng which was flighted on television and to some competitions of Uhlolo Lweentombi (virgin testing) in the KZN. We also took part in the ACPACC dance competition and won the provincial title,” a proud Mlibali told PE Express Indaba. For the past two years, however, Mlibali said they did not go to Mgungundlovu in KZN owing to financial constraints. The group practises in the backyard of a friend’s home in NU 10 Motherwell from Monday to Friday, between 3 and 5 pm. According to Mlibali, they need space and uniforms. The uniforms we have were donated by former Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC Nosimo Balindlela a long time ago. We need help,” said Mlibali, adding that to some of her members the involvement in the cultural club provides their daily bread.

Noluthando Mangaliso launches CD THAMSANQA MBOVANE GOSPEL singer, Noluthando Mangaliso (23) will launch her first album CD called “NyamSezela” this Sunday, 27 July. The event will take place at Jeff Masemola Hall in KwaNobuhle township. The show will start at 2pm. Admission will be R50 at the door. Noluthando, who is a former TSS singer which stands for Thandos, Sino M and Siyolisa, attends the Gospel Church Of Power under
Mama Bishop Nolight Dapula. She started singing at the age of 7 in her church. “It was when a choir was singing in the church during a function known as Bazaar. The MC of that day wanted a particular song to be sung again by the choir. He forgot its title. I rose up and rendered it in full view of the choir and church members,” said Noluthando, adding she was applauded and later roped in - being the youngest of them all! On the album she worked with Sinethemba Ncalu, who is her producer. “The album has
11 songs. My favourite song is called Ngcwele. The album is a must-have and contains a message that says, in all life’s challenges, we must never give up but persevere.” Ward Councillor Thembisile Gana said he assisted Nolutando with recording the album because he saw an amazing talent in her. Noluthando Mangaliso will present a debut album called “Nyamezela” at Jeff Masemola Hall this coming Sunday.

Speakers including the guest of honour Andrew Jordaan, a former teacher, sports guru and political activitist commended the owner and chairman Dr Ngubo Biyana’s work in the club - including honouring excellence in the club. A brother to SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan, Andrew said those who succeeded in football did so because they were dedicated to the sport. Motherwell Rollers more than ready for national champs MOTHERWELL Roller Skates Club together with Dimbaza Rollers Skate Club started intensive training at Wells Estates Community Hall from Madiba Day to Sunday. The motive behind this programme is for the Motherwell Rollers to prepare themselves for the national championships which will be held at the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre on September 5, 2014. The high profile figures who were in attendance, were Roller Sport South Africa’s Wendy Gila, Eastern Cape Roller Skate Association Chairperson Desiree Nel, Motherwell Rollers Chairperson Marianne Terblanche and the national professional dancer Martin van Heerden. The Dimbaza team returned home on Friday. Terblanche said that the skaters really showed great enthusiasm in show- skating which is the new section of skating in the country. She confidently stated that Motherwell Rollers were more than ready for the
must ask yourself this question today: What does football mean to you?” said Jordaan. The event was not a daily occurrence, according to SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy President and MOFA President Simphiwe Mkangelwa. This was encouraging to the players, coaches, their families and supporters. It was something other clubs would like to emulate, said the speakers. During the glittering event, SAFA NMB president Monde Mhletywa highlighted the players’ never-say-die attitude which helped them win the Castle League in the past and currently kept them in the AB Motsepe League - a feat that only three teams in the metro had achieved. The winners:
national champions. Van Heerden, who commended the skaters for their behaviour, trained the skaters on how to perform in show-skating. Nel highlighted that show-skating was done to music and the skaters really enjoyed it. Nel stated that they were working around the clock to make sure their major event in the Bay would be a resounding success. Nel encouraged schools to come in numbers to support them. Desiree said’ “We expect 120 skaters from 12 or 13 teams coming from the Western Province, North Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, North West, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape. We urge parents and school children to join us when we host this major event. Admission is free to everyone.” Gila revealed that roller-skating has drawn lots of skaters especially from the less fortunate community. Wendy said, “Roller-skating is becoming a popular sport especially in the townships. We are very delighted that the skaters show so much interest and are very passionate about roller skating. They are willing to learn. Our challenges are lack of facilities like proper training surfaces and equipment but we are not deterred. We look forward to developing quality world-class skaters in the longterm.” – SELBY MADIKANE Marianne Terblanche, Desiree Nel, Martin van Heerden and Wendy Gila are with skaters during a training session. Chippa United lost against Chiefs but won EC fans NCEBA DLADLA NEWLY acquired Nelson Mandela Bay Professional Soccer League (PSL) outfit Chippa United might have lost 4-2 to the mighty Kaizer Chiefs in a friendly game played at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on Sunday, but they were far from being disgraced. The newly promoted Chippa players were gallant against the Absa Premiership’s number two. They were not intimidated. Coach Kostadin Papic must be applauded. It was a matter of the boys, formerly from
Phillipi in Cape Town playing their hearts out against the Soweto giants. The Chilli Boys, as Chippa United is known, giving a clear indication that they did not come to the elite league to add numbers. United played excellent football going forward while mastering the defence - working together as a team, especially in the first half with players like Siyabulela Shai and Andile Mbeyane giving problems. The Eastern Cape born millionaire Chippa Mpengesi’s boys mean business and they must be supported. About 25 162 mad soccer loving fans cheered
their hearts out as Chippa strikers pushed forward against their vastly experienced Chief’s defence. United captain Andile Mbeyane shocked the visitors and fans alike when he scored an opening goal in the first six minutes of the game. This was however, short-lived as Kingston Nkatha levelled matters for Chiefs. Chippa completed up to ten passes against Chiefs who seemed stunned as the former National First Division side asked them questions. The score was 2-2 at half time with David Zulu and Simphiwe Shabalala scoring for Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs respective-
ly. Changes were effected in the second half, something that gave Stuart Baxter’s men, an upper hand. Reneilwe Letsholonyana and George Lebese scored to make the final score 4-2. “This was entertaining football. It is the beginning of things to come in this province. We’re going to watch excellent football matches. Chippa United showed us what we must expect from them. I want to thank Kaizer Chiefs players - the visitors - too for giving us the best,” said EC Premier Phumulo Masualle after the match.

PORT Elizabeth Football Association (PEFA) Premier league leaders Vodacom NMMU Madibaz secured an all-important 3-2 win over Highbury in their bid to win the league trophy when they played at South Campus on Saturday.
MOFA Build It First Division newly affiliated side Manchester FC from Wells Estates have two games left to claim the prestigious league. However, Manchester FC came out with guns blazing in their battle against their neighbours Wells United whom they punished 3-0 at NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. Thandisizwe Gaxa bagged a brace while Thembalethu Yokwe scored a single goal. Xolisa Zane Zamisa, Mphumzi Mati, Mawande Jimmy Jakuja and Luthando November Peter starred for Manchester FC while Elrich Schilo Jordaan and Lulamile Rhoo Mzayiya played their hearts out for United but their neighboursgoal stopper stood his ground.
Having played 13 games Vodacom NMMU Madibaz have so far collected 35 league points and are leading the pack. Callies made their intentions clear when they walloped PE Homerovers 5-0. The Londt Park lads with 34 points after 14 games are breathing hot at the heels of the students. KwaDwesi All Stars accumulated a well-deserved 3-1 victory in their game against Central Acemates at Kemsley Park. To date Stars are moving slightly from the relegation zone as they are placed third from the bottom of the log standings with 10 points after 14 outings. PEFA Premier League reigning winners Hearts gave a good account of themselves despite trailing by 2-1 to Forresters. PE Defence were held to a 1-1 draw by Motherwell Academy at their own battlefield which is EC Defence Fields. Warriors were shown by NMB Municipality how to wage a war that they lost 4-2.
SELBY MADIKANE AS the NAFA Premier League programme proceeds the boys were separated from the men. However, Bloom Callies supporters were ecstatic to see their side edging out Booysen Pride 1-0 in the tough game of the day at Finnis Fields. It was a do-or-die clash when Park United were held to a goalless draw by Stardrift in Finnis Fields. It seems that Hotspurs do not have a good season this time around following their 2-1 defeat by Fairview Rovers. Shamrocks salvaged a well-deseverd 2-1 triumph when they faced
Hotspurs defender Jade Labersensie chasing the ball.
