FIRST FEMALE BOXER FROM NMB TO WIN SA BOXING TITLE

‘Lily’makes Bay boxing history

Sisonke High School teachers and learners hail Nomampondomise “Lily” Xotyeni the champ!

ISTORY was made when Nomampondomise Xotyeni became the first female boxer from Nelson Mandela Bay to win a South African boxing title.

PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA

Known by her moniker Lily in boxing circles, she stopped KwaZulu-Natal’s Nomvelo Magcaba within five rounds, in a 10-round contest for the vacant SA Junior-lightweight title at the Jeff Masemola Community Hall, KwaNobuhle on Sunday. The fight, sanctioned by Boxing South Africa (BSA) under the supervision of Mthunzi Mapitiza, was the main attraction of the first tournament organised by local businessman Sibongile Nkebe’s Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions. Nkebe’s development programme has helped Xotyeni chalk up 6 fights with four wins, one loss and a stalemate going into the fight against KZN’s Magcaba who had 5 fights, three wins and two losses entering the ring. What made Xotyeni’s win most exciting was that Nelson Mandela Bay, which is historically regarded as the Mecca of boxing in the country, was suffering a dry spell without a champion, male or female, for more than 10 years. Mbulelo Nyanda stopped Limpopo’s Phathutshedzo Nemukongwe to win the SA Junior-Flyweight championship in Durban in August 2003. The local lad lost the crown to Vuyani Keswa in his first defence in Gauteng in December of the same year.

Gelvandale off-duty member murdered AN off-duty Policeman, stationed at Gelvandale SAPS, was shot dead at Salamntu Street, KwaZakhele, on September 20, around 1am. Police said it is alleged that the 32-year-old constable parked his bakkie next to a cellphone container and about five suspects followed him and dragged him out of the container and assaulted him. Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Shaun Vieira, said the constable was also shot several times in the upper body and died at the scene. “It is unclear at this stage whether he was robbed of any of his belongings. Although attempts were made to open the vehicle by the suspects, the vehicle was not taken. “At this stage, we cannot speculate over the cause of the shooting. A murder case has been opened. No arrests have been made as yet.” The Eastern Cape Provincial Commission-

er, Lt General Celiwe Binta, condemned the murder and said, “Any person who attacks or kills a police official will face the full might of the law, as an attack on or murder of a police official is a threat to our constitutional democracy and robs our communities of their protectors. This should not be taken lightly by anyone”. The SAPS Management in the Eastern Cape expressed their condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the off duty constable. Police appeal to the public to assist with any information which could lead to the arrest of the suspects by contacting Warrant Officer Shaun Vieira, KwaZakhele SAPS at 041 408 7828/ 0824572527. Information can also be shared through SAPS Crime Stop 08600 10 111 or Crime Line 32211. All information will be treated as confidential. – REPORTER

‘Lily’ makes Bay boxing history Continued from page 1 Friends and neighbours from KwaNobuhle celebrated Xotyeni’s win. Sisonke Secondary School, where she is a Grade 10 learner, ground to a halt on Monday morning as her schoolmates and teachers celebrated the victory with the new champion. “We’ve got the SA champ!” “Lily is the champ!” said the learners greeting PE Express Indaba as we entered the school yard. “We appreciate individual success at the school. We always encourage excellence, not only academically but in other spheres of life also,” said principal Melikhaya Gosani, adding that they all claim Xotyeni’s victory. “This is good motivation for learners of the school. Xotyeni is one of our great sports achievers like one of the country’s most successful athletes, Zolani Ngqaqa who is also a learner at the school,” said sportsmaster Mncedisi Jafta, adding that, being a hardworker and dedicated sportsperson, Xotye-

ni was bound to succeed. “She’s a dedicated sportsperson who likes training especially with the boys,” said Jafta. According to Jafta, Xotyeni played netball but quit it early “probably because she loved fighting,” he quipped. Phumla Moni described Xotyeni as a disciplined child who is always in class, on time and doing her work. “I’m not only her class teacher, but her maths teacher as well. Xotyeni loves school like she loves boxing. She is a reserved child with good discipline. You can see she’s a sportsperson,” said Moni proudly. Best preparations and plotting of Magcaba’s downfall in the gym by trainers Mlamli Nawule and Khuselekile Gada showed in the corner as an all fury Xotyeni pummelled the Durbanite and dropped her in the fourth round before referee Prince Mbambaza stopped the proceedings in 1min 14 seconds of the fifth round after having scene enough.

Deputy Mayor announces new MBDA members

DEPUTY Mayor, Chippa Ngcolomba, formally announced the newly appointed Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) board. At the announcement of the new board on September 19, Ngcolomba thanked the outgoing board led by past Chairperson Saki Macozoma and his Deputy Phil Gutsche for selflessly giving of their time and energy guiding the MBDA to an award winning, credible and effective service delivery agent for Nelson Mandela Bay. “We appreciate the effective oversight role played by the outgoing board, during their time; the agency has had nine consecutive unqualified audits and recently a clean audit for the 2012/13 financial year. “Not so long ago, the MBDA board was

awarded the best performing board of all municipal entities in the Eastern Cape by the Black Management Forum (BMF). The City will forever be grateful to these visionary leaders. We wish them well in their future endeavors,” commented Ngcolomba. “The new board, which effectively starts today, has big shoes to fill. We have no doubt they are up to the task. The new board has a great mix of professional skills, youth, experience and social activists with the goal to strengthen the MBDA to achieve even greater success. “The City has big plans for the agency, including the expansion of its mandate beyond the inner city, but to cover the Nelson Mandela Bay region as a whole as well as the consolidation of entities,” added Portfolio councillor for

Economic Development, Babalwa Lobishe. The process to appoint a new board began with an invitation to the public to nominate suitable candidates with relevant skills. The mayoral committee deliberated on the submissions received and made their choice which was then referred to the MBDA Annual General Meeting for ratification and endorsement. Lobishe said,“The Mayoral committee of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality representing the hopes and wishes of our residents does not take lightly the sacrifice associated with the acceptance of this voluntary role that comes with a huge responsibility. “The City eagerly awaits the positive impact and economic growth that should result as a legacy of the new board through its strategic

Top film school to open a WIN! WIN! WIN! campus in Port Elizabeth Coca-Cola REPORTER THE South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, AFDA, is poised to open a campus in Port Elizabeth. The school, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary, already has campuses in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. AFDA recently acquired accreditation by the Council of Higher Education to open an additional site of delivery in Port Elizabeth, after working together with the local film and television production training provider, The Media Workshop, for a number of years to get the necessary requirements in place. The chairperson and co-founder of AFDA, Mr Garth Holmes, says “AFDA has decided to expand into the Eastern Cape because we believe that the Eastern Cape has a strong Intellectual Capital base, cultural heritage and capacity for generating local stories and entertainment production content”. The school is having an Open Day for prospective learners on September 27, from 9am until 12pm at The Media Workshop’s premises at 99 2nd Avenue, Newton Park. Over the past two decades, AFDA has produced award winning filmmakers, television producers and directors, leaders in the commercials industry and some of the country’s top performing artists. They are the only South African film school to have won an academy award for the best foreign student film and to have been a finalist for the prestige Court de Metrage at Cannes. AFDA has, since the inception of the SAFTA awards, not only had multiple nominations and awards won by the alumni, but also received 21 out of a possible 24 nominations for best student film, and won the award 7 out of the 8 possible times that the award has been presented. “I am often asked how AFDA substantiates its claim that it is the number one insti-

tution of its kind in the world today. My answer has always been the same. We rate ourselves based on our contribution to the South African film industry through the quality of our graduates, the work that they create and the work that they produce,” says Holmes. “It’s great to see our guys cracking it out there, but hardly a co-incidence.” As chairman of the African regional association of CILECT (the world film and TV school association), Holmes has interfaced with most of the top film schools in the world, affording him a unique opportunity to measure AFDA against international film schools. The school is designed to manifest AFDA’s number one focus and product: the students and their capacity to develop and sustain the local entertainment industry through the development of relevant local content for local audiences, and by extension, international audiences. AFDA had some early success with Jan Hendrik’s short film Triomfeer and Dean Blumberg’s Under the Rainbow. Five of the new feature films exhibited at this year’s Kyk-Net Silverskerm fees were written and directed by AFDA graduates: films like Etienne Fourie’s Windpomp, Hard to get, Zee Ntuli’s film, Corne van Rooyen’s Hollywood in my Huis, Wickus Strijdom of Zama Zama fame’s Suurlemoen and Bakgat 1, 2, and 3, and Fanie se Labola’s Henk Pretorius’ new film Leading Lady. The filmmaker Danie Bester has produced over 20 feature films since graduating from AFDA with a B.A. Honours degree in motion picture. Bester and his AFDA partner C.A. van Aswegen, were the early pioneers of local films that tapped into the niche Afrikaans market and made use of the DTI rebate to fund and produce successful box office hits, like his first feature film Bakgat and his most recent box office record-breaking Pad na jou Hart.

If you don’t manage your future, someone else will JOE was a young man with a bright future ahead of him. He had the financial as well as emotional support of his family. He also had the same intellectual ability as his mother and father who both had stable jobs. At school he performed above average and his intelligence was evident in his sharp humour that drew people to him like a magnet. One thing was lacking though; Joe did not have any idea of what he wanted to become. He had no future vision of himself in the workplace. The result was that Joe just chose to study towards a qualification that sounded good and it looked as if people in that career earned very good salaries or successfully ran their own businesses. The fact that Joe chose a qualification and career that did not suit his personality and preferences caused him to have little interest in his studies. This led to a string of poor decisions and ultimately academic failure. This meant that Joe was at the mercy of employers looking for workers with little or no qualifications whom they could pay as little as possible. Unless Joe wakes up and “smell the coffee,” he will be at the mercy of other people for the rest of his life. His life will be planned and managed for him because of the minimal contribution that he can make to society for lack of knowledge and skills. As individuals we cannot improve the economy or create more jobs.

We can only manage ourselves and make ourselves more competitive within the job market by gaining skills and knowledge that are marketable. The level of skills and knowledge that we possess coupled with a positive attitude and work ethics ultimately determine the reward that we receive in the workplace. “It is essential that people manage their futures.” says Albert Verster from Boston City Campus and Business College Port Elizabeth. “This means that they must •Set a career goal. The power that will pull them into the future. •Identify the obstacles that are keeping them from reaching that goal, such as lack of knowledge, lack of skills, lack of funds. •Create a strategy to overcome those obstacles. This may include sourcing a study loan, formal studies, experiential training. •Implement the strategy. The Boston Open Day on September 27 provides prospective students with the perfect opportunity to gain as much information as possible for the career decision that they will soon have to make. Mark Twain said “Plan for the future because that’s where you are going to spend the rest of your life”. Boston City Campus and Business College offers over 80 dynamic career qualifications, including diplomas and degrees, throughout 44 branches nationwide. .Contact Boston Port Elizabeth on 041 363 0778, e-mail bbcportelizabeth@boston.co.za, visit www.boston.co.za, or like them on Facebook.

National players plough back into the community HANDBALL Sport South Africa’s two local players intend to introduce handball to township schools in the metro. New Brighton born and bred players, Samkelo Dumse and Phumelela Pistoli, who are members of the Handball Sport SA U/20 team, revealed to PE Express Indaba that their intentions were to help coach the pupils. Dumse, who is the national skipper, said, “All I want to do is to introduce the basics of handball to the pupils. The basics

Showing their handball skills are Samkelo Dumse and Phumelela Pistoli.

are very clear and simple and as soon as the learners understand the basics, they will be able to play the game of handball. Furthermore we want to dedicate our time to all the township schools. School sport is the only foundation which opens doors for learners. Handball is a very simple sport”. Pistoli added that they would like the schools to participate in a league. Pistoli said, “As soon as we are fully convinced that the learners understand the basics of handball, we will start a league competition in the townships. We do not have the funds to start off but I think our knowledge will help in developing the youth”. Dumse and Pistoli gave thanks to Coach Zonwabele Hlulani who introduced handball during their Charles Duna Primary school years. Dumse explained that he was initially not interested in handball but that Coach Hlulani helped him to develop a love for the game of handball. “I watched the tournament which was played at Lillian Ngoyi in KwaZakhele in 2009. That was when I started to participate in handball. We recently participated in the International Handball Federation (IHF) Zone 6 Tournament in Lusaka, Zambia. Had it not been for Teacher Hlulani, we would not have been where we are now. We would like to thank him for developing us in handball.” Dumse and Pistoli can be contacted at 084 434 6298 and 078 768 7820 respectively. – SELBY MADIKANE

Sizani heads in only goal to open Tomorrow Stars account for the season SELBY MADIKANE TOMORROW Stars earned their first trophy of the season as they beat Young Madrid in MOFA Dr Biyana Premier League Top 8 finals at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Stars produced a defiant performance that was capped off with a headed goal from Nceba Neymar Sizani. Stars midfielder Sizani nodded a 89th minute corner kick and Stars held on to their lead, until the fat lady sang, despite a spirited effort from Madrid. In fact, Madrid showed plenty of attacking promise in the opening stages. Madrid were unfortunate to miss out a goal when Xolani Axeman Mpiyane failed to head home into Stars’ goal with the goalkeeper well beaten. Manchester FC were crowned MOFA Dr Biyana First Division Top 8 winners,

following their gallant performance over Motherwell United which they beat 2-0. Manchester wing, Lucas Rhoo Mdushe, was the thorn in the flesh as he tormented the defenders of United. Mdushe’s nifty cross went straight to his striker, Vuyani Vidge Mtshungwana, who pulled a thunderous shot into the back of United’s net to put his side 1-0 ahead in the last minute of the first half. In the halfway mark of the second half Manchester were awarded a penalty which was taken by Thandisizwe Gaxa after United’s goalkeeper went for a man in the penalty area. Manchester won the MOFA Build It First Division trophy last season and they started the season on a high note by collecting silverware. Tomorrow Stars’ Sizani and Manchester’s Mdushe respectively were voted the best players in the finals.

Movers erroneous in their loss SELBY NADIKANE MISTAKES by individuals cost Ikamva Movers in their 4-1 loss to Lion City in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League game at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. However, the lack of communication at the back is Movers’ major downturn in all the games they have played so far in the regional league. Another glaring mistake to note in the part of Movers was the decision they took in the transitional area. Despite the errors, Movers started the game at a high tempo as they took the game to City. Both sides went to the break in a deadlock. In the second half Movers piled more pressure but City scored their goal headed home by Siyasanga Ngetu. City camped in Movers territory hunting a 2-0 cushion. As such Unathi Kuzwayo also scored with a header in a similar manner to Ngetu. Movers scored their first goal courtesy of Gcobani Mavengana but their joy was short lived as Ngetu bagged his second goal. City’s fourth goal was pulled by Thabiso Minana to make the final score 4-1.
