Full steam ahead for the Apple Express train ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL
D
ESPITE numerous setbacks, plans are on track to have the Apple Express train in operation in early November, and this tourist attraction might possibly even be used for normal passenger services. The legendary Apple Express train, which has been running since 1903, hasn’t been operational since 2010 due to various financial issues. Chairperson for the Heritage Railway Association of Southern Africa (HRASA), Nerina Skuy, said that if all goes according to plan the Apple Express should be chuffing along its railway line in time for the busy December holidays. Skuy is also the spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Narrow Gauge Rail Development Initiative. “We cannot give a final answer on precisely when this will happen as it is up to Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) to get the line in an operational state and then declare it open and available for the train to run. There is flood damage where the line passes Walmer, but TFR is in the process of repairing the section,” she said. She added that there is also some minor maintenance work to the locomotive and refurbishing of the coaches still to be done. “The future of the Apple Express train is very promising because of the reality that this line has more to offer the communities it serves. The plan is that it will not be limited to tourism and freight, but also normal passenger services along certain sections of the line and a community services train. The latter two are in the study
phase, but we are very optimistic.” The fact that the train had suffered acts of vandalism recently, should not put a spanner in the works of having the train operational again. Some of the items that were stolen or damaged include solid brass door stops and handrails, which would probably have to be replaced with modern fittings. The offices were also ransacked and a PC, heavy duty power cables which are used between the coaches to secure the train when on an overnight stop, tools and other items were stolen. “The previous thefts have had their impact and all-in-all the most challenging part is to find the money to replace what has been taken – if the train was running then we would have some disposable cash to plough back, but we have not and hence we are relying on donations and/or sponsorships,” Skuy said. The Apple Express is not exclusive to tourist groups, and will be available to the general public, which is why the decision was made to keep the fares a lot lower than other heritage steam train operators. Skuy said that prices will most likely remain as they were in December 2010, at R160 per adult and R100 per child aged 3-10. The booking venue, full running schedule with destinations and information will be published closer to the time.

Pearson High School’s drama group made it through to the provincial finals of the FNB Alexander Playhouse Drama Festival that will take place October 10 and 11 in the Guild Theatre in East London. A total of 23 productions were entered into this prestigeous drama competition and Pearson are one of eight schools to make it to this round. The Pearson play, “Exhibit X”, is performed by the drama group under the guidance of Linda Louise Swain, drama teacher and renowned local actress. Teenage issues come to the fore in this original and spell bounding piece of theatre. The group incorporates song and dance into the very moving play. Promise of houses is ‘political ploy’ PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, needs to explain in detail how a plan for the eradication of the housing backlog of 71 000 units in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro by 2016 will be rolled out and whether it is realistically achievable. This was said in a statement by Dacre Haddon, Member of the Provincial Legislature and DA Spokesperson on Housing, who will be asking at this week’s meeting of the Portfolio Committee of Human Settlements for a detailed report of this ambitious plan as announced by the National Department of Human Settlements recently. “The plan would need to give specifics about staff and contractor capacity, timeframes and budget costing,” said Haddon. He said the eradication of the housing backlog of 71 000 units in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro by 2016, is not achievable within the current capacity of the municipality. He said by making such a pronouncement one is creating hope among beneficiaries and communities that may not materialise. “It is unacceptable and unfair to play on the hopes and emotions of vulnerable citizens in this way. “This is a political ploy by the ruling party to secure votes ahead of the 2016 council elections in which there is a real chance the ruling party will lose power in this metro,” said Haddon. Currently the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro can’t attain building targets of 3 500 units per annum.
“I have been informed by my councillor colleague in the metro that the backlog figure is closer to 91 000 units. If one adds to this a further 40 000 houses that need rectification, the real housing backlog in this metro is 130 000 units.” “With all municipalities and metros under financial strain the cost to build 90 000 houses at R100 000 per unit will be R900 million (excluding rectification costs), an unaffordable amount in any current budget.” Haddon said to build 90 000 units in three years would equate to constructing 30 000 units a year which is 10 times more than what is being achieved as an annual metro housing target at present. In an 11-month period (allowing for a month’s building holidays) and possible delays not accounted for at best, this would equate to building 2 727 units a month or 682 units per week. “This is a tall order given the current staff and contractor capacity within the metro. Haddon believes that what is needed to solve this provincial and national housing backlog is the releasing of well-located land with full services, giving every beneficiary legal tenure of a plot; that there must be more emphasis on building well located, social- and mixed housing rental units; and a greater focus on building houses with alternative technologies and moving away from expensive brick and mortar construction. “By so doing, this creates opportunity and choice for beneficiaries to decide how they wish to be housed and become involved in the building of their houses rather than being passive recipients, as is now the case,” said Haddon.

olphin RRally ally tto o DDolphin BBeachview eachview tthis his w eekend weekend PE EXPRESS REPORTER THOUSANDS of bikers will converge on the Beachview Resort from tomorrow until Sunday when the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality once again play host to the Dolphin Rally. Cllr Nomhle Mzilikazi, who represented Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile at a media launch last week, said the bikers are very welcome in the city since under the leather and the sunglasses and the tough exterior, there is warmth and compassion for the poor and needy. “Last year, the proceeds of R200 000 were used to renovate the Ithemba Special School in Missionvale, making it a much more attractive and a safer place for its learners. Bikers also assisted with fund-raising efforts at various schools,” she added. Gona Puckreesamy, President of the Dolphin Rally Motorcycle Club, said they also donated approximately 250 hygiene packs to the elderly and pensioners. “This year’s charity has not been identified as yet, since it will be done in collaboration with the Executive Mayor to enhance and promote those projects that need the support most. “Something that makes the rally unique is that the weekend is load-

Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Chief Executive Mandlakazi Skefile said she was looking forward to the activities. “I’ve seen the drags. It is a good vibey event and can definitely be considered as one of the adventure activities in the province. “Let us all invite our friends to take part in the programme and encourage people to contribute money that will be used for a charitable cause,” Skefile added. The gates open on Thursday, 27 September, at 2pm on the first day and activities end on Sunday, 30 September. For more information, go to the website www.dolphinrally.co.za

Do not carry large sums of money and walk alone to and from bank NCEBA DLADLA A STERN warning has been issued to Eastern Cape residents to refrain from carrying large sums of money on their way to and from the bank. Speaking to the media during an awareness campaign held at the Marine Hotel last week, South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) Senior Manager Dr Alice Maree said in the past two to three years banks have noticed an increase in the number of robberies happening in the vicinity of their branches with the targets being people making large cash withdrawals and deposits. Sabric is a Section 21 Company formed by SA banks to combat crime. “Approximately 75% of incidents of cash robberies of bank clients in the Eastern Cape happened after cash withdrawals,” said Maree, adding that this is mostly between 9am and 10am. According to Maree, organised groups of perpetrators are responsible for these crimes. She said it was incumbent therefore upon all people, small business owners and especially institutions which deal with finances like

stokvels, churches and schools to be responsible. “We cannot run away from the fact that there are syndicates involved in this type of crime. We cannot even trust bank employees who might be sending out information. People should be very careful,” said General Jones Mbabala of the SAPS. “Banks emphasise that people do not use cellphones inside the bank. We hope clients change their attitude and oblige,” said Dr Maree. General Mbabala agreed that cellphones should be switched off inside the banks as those gadgets can be used by criminals masquerading as clients in the queue to take photographs of people withdrawing large amounts of cash and then send the information or their description to their friends outside the bank to lodge an attack on the unsuspecting customer. “This is very serious; perhaps it is time that people should seriously consider the convenience of electronic banking such as internet, cellphone or ATM transfers instead of cash withdrawals,” said Dr Maree. Otherwise, she said, people carrying cash should be in the company of someone they trust and only withdraw an amount of cash that they need.

Home warns about fraudulent fundraiser PE EXPRESS REPORTER Cheshire Home Summerstrand has warned residents not to give money to a woman who has been doing the rounds fraudulently asking for cash donations on behalf of the Homes. “We do not, nor have we, raised funds through phone calls and/or door-to-door collections,” said Les Kirkland, manager of Cheshire Home Summerstrand. They appeal to the public that if they do get a knock on the door or a telephone call stating that the caller is collecting on behalf of Cheshire Home Summerstrand the public must please get as many details as possible and refer
the details to Kirkland to allow him to feed the information to the police. Kirkland said, “Such a person(s) is committing fraud and deserves nothing better than being prosecuted. We thank those who have already reported to us and especially the lady from Walton Park who phoned us to say she had been contacted by the fraudster but had said she would rather make a direct deposit to the Home than do it through a third person. Thank you for your vigilance and kindness.” In general, the home would propose that should a person have a telephone call or request for any charity donation that he or she contact the head office of the organisation to confirm whether the request is indeed valid. For any information or input please feel free to contact Kirkland at 0 041 583 2183.

throughout his challenge by tweeting about the journey and using the hash tag #AddHope. Manser’s bike will have a donation collection vessel fastened to it. People who come into contact with him along his trip will be able to contribute their R2 into the box, thus also increasing his load while he rides. The adventurer will visit various KFC stores and several Add Hope partner beneficiaries where he will be served the same meals as the children. “At its most granular level, hunger is a major problem in our country, and if not addressed proactively will hamper our ability to sustain the levels of growth needed to truly eradicate poverty. We are excited to have Riaan on board to help educate and champion the cause,” said David Timm the Chief Marketing Officer, KFC South Africa. For further information and donations visit www.addhope.co.za.
Manser became well-known through his epic adventure circumnavigating Iceland and battling Arctic elements with partner, Dan Skinstad, who has mild cerebral palsy. The two paddled 2300km in five months in a double kayak. Manser has battled extreme cold while circumnavigating Iceland and Madagascar in a kayak, and cycled around Africa through conflict zones, alone and unaided. This time around on the Add Hope journey he tackles yet another challenge: filling hungry tummies. Riaan is undertaking this journey on behalf of KFC’s corporate social responsibility programme Add Hope. He will consume limited calories while cycling the word “hope” across the face of the South African map. His cycling odyssey will highlight both the plight of hunger and the positive impact that Add Hope is making to the country’s children. Manser’s Journey of Hope will span 4100km on a predetermined course across the country. While this may seem easy compared with his previous expeditions, there is a catch: Manser will undertake the journey on a limited calorie intake. “I’m calling on everyone to help me save a few lives by the end of my journey. I will be highlighting the issue of hunger and showing people the impact that Add Hope makes and continues to make to children’s lives,” said Manser. Through the use of geo-tracking, this neverbefore attempted journey will also be visible and traceable on satellite maps for fans to track. Customers and fans can get involved and help “feed” Manser emergency calories

Rut-musiekblyspel opgevoer

Prime Circle live and unplugged in sundowner set in PE SA legendary band Prime Circle, will be getting up close and personal with their PE fans, in a “one night only” unplugged rendition of all their great hits on Sunday, September 30.
Prime Circle band members are, from left, Dirk Bisschoff (electric guitarist), Dale Schnettler (drummer) Ross Learmonth (lead singer), Marco Gomes (bassist) and Neil Breytenbach (keyboardist).
The show is brought to Port Elizabeth by locally based entertainment gurus, Centrestage, and local music and entertainment publicist, Michelle Campbell. Prime Circle, one of South Africa’s top rock bands, formed in December 2001 and are currently signed to The David Gresham Record Company. Their first album, Hello Crazy World, sold over 45 000 units and their second album, Live this Life, sold 20 000 units, making them the
biggest-selling South African rock act of 2003, 2004 and 2005. Prime Circle have played at most major local concerts and have played alongside the US-based band Live on their Birds Of Pray world tour. Prime Circle have continued to wow audiences all over the world, and their up-and-coming new album is heavily anticipated by industry and fans. Just as exciting is the fact that two local musical outfits, who have gained huge respect on the local PE circuit as well as elsewhere in the country, will also perform. Wayne Kallis will be joined on stage by his newly formed band ‘Pistola’ and ‘The Stuart Reece Band’ will also perform.
“Pistola was born to provide music lovers in South Africa with good, energetic, heartfelt rock music and on stage the band will keep that promise, putting a premium on both performance and entertainment, a formula which the band hopes will see them grow from strength to strength in South Africa in the months to come,” said Kallis. The Stuart Reece band have played alongside many popular South African acts. They also boast play listing on many of the country’s radio stations. Popular local DJ Richard Saunders will provide music on stage and also co-host for the evening The show starts at 5pm. Tickets cost R120 per person and can be booked through Computicket. > Kamisa Tyatyeka (7 to 12 months).

A night at the museum with NMB Tourism NELSON Mandela Bay Tourism invite the public to join them in celebrating Tourism month with a ‘A night at the Museum’ - a kiddies’ treasure hunt at No 7 Castle Hill Historical Museum on September 28. No 7 Castle Hill was completed in 1825 and is one of the oldest surviving Settler cottages in Port Elizabeth. Following renovations, No. 7 Castle Hill, was opened as a Museum in 1965. The interior presents a picture of domestic life as enjoyed by an English middle class family in mid-19th Century PE. This picturesque family dwelling, located in Castle Hill Road, Central, has Yel-
lowwood floors and beams, and a restored slate roof. The doll’s house, lace displays and kitchen is particularly impressive. No 7 Castle Hill transports children back in time, where their imagination can run wild as they explore the old furniture and kitchen equipment; collect water from the well; enjoy the old toys, the dolls and the fairy garden; complete a treasure hunt and make friends with the No 7 family in the display room! The treasure hunt starts at 6.30pm and will continue till 9pm. Costs involved are R9 for adults R5 for children and includes coffee and rusks. For more information contact Jonker Fourie at 0 041 582 2575.

It’s a brand-new day for Melvyn ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL DISAPPOINTMENT in the slow music industry, and lack of acknowledgement for his lifetime’s work, have not deterred Melvyn Matthews from coming back with a bang, with a CD entitled Brand New Day, which showcases this legendary musician from Schauderville’s vocal and song-writing abilities. Matthews, the man who penned what is ar-
guably the biggest hit in the South African music industry, Weekend Special, sung by the late Brenda Fassie, says he puts his heart and soul into his music. “One reporter from Johannesburg once wrote that the South African music industry was on the verge of collapse until Weekend Special came out. I think that about sums up how big an impact I have had on the industry, but sadly the recognition for my contribution was never there.” Matthews also wrote the hit Life is Going On, also sung by Fassie, and according to Matthews was her ultimate favourite song. “I’m disappointed that over the years so little has been done to uplift local talent, especially from our rural areas,” he said. “I’m not bitter, however. I’m just happy to still be doing what I love. And all I can do is ask people to support my music. I have financed the album on my own and I am also distributing the CD myself. I promise that young and old will enjoy what I am offering on this CD.” Matthews’ latest album contains 12 tracks, most of which came from his pen, and the tribute to Brenda Fassie, called Where Will You Be. For more info call Matthews on 0 083 588 8965.

Charlo Primary achieves personal best in blood donation programme CHARLO Primary School participated in the South African National Blood Service’s Adopt-a-Month Blood Donation Programme during August 2012 and achieved a personal best for encouraging the most people to donate blood compared to the past 7 years of being involved with this initiative. They encouraged 167 people to donate blood to exceed their target of 100 units of blood quite comfortably. Their previous best was 119 donors during 2009. This is a wonderful achievement considering that one unit of blood can help to save up to three lives. Charlo Primary therefore helped to possibly save 501 people during the month of August 2012. Grade 2E and 4A shared first prize for being
the top class as they each achieved the highest percentage participation of 25% and 17 blood donations in total. The winning individual was Amy van Vuuren, in Grade 5E, who encouraged 12 people to donate blood. Other interesting achievements include an overall participation of 27% (167 donations out of 620). Although this percentage does not sound significant, it is much higher than the South African average of 1%. Of the 167 people who donated blood, 22 (13%) were first time blood donors, 29 (17%) were lapsed donors (people who have not donated in the past year) and 116 (69%) were regular blood donors. For more information on blood donation, visit www.sanbs.org.za or follow SANBS on Facebook and Twitter.

Book review
Two novels to touch the heart MICHAEL SHAFTO IT’S FOURTH time lucky for author, Julian Barnes. He has been nominated three times previously for the Man Booker Prize. With The Sense of an Ending, nominated for the 2011 prize, he won it. Deservedly, too, even if it’s a difficult novel to appreciate first time out. It is a book filled with mystery – yet is no thriller. Rather it is a poignant portrait of everyday living, the hurt and damage that people do to one another, often unknowingly. However, in just 150 pages it deals with big themes – love and marriage, betrayal, divorce, life and death. A reviewer in London’s Daily Telegraph calls it “A masterpiece... I would urge you to read it and re-read it.” This I found to be good advice. On a second reading it was still fresh, but its subtleties altogether clearer, sharper too. Tony Webster and his gang first meet Adrian Finn at school, all of them eager to experience life at the cutting edge, sexually in particular. When the novel opens Tony is retired, looking back on life: his and Adrian’s. How certain of his actions impacted on Adrian – though he never meant anyone real harm. The novel might be described as almost deceitfully easy reading. But remember that injunction from The Telegraph to read and reread it. Or simply read it with an eye open to its skilful plotting, its heartfelt commentary on the carelessness with which life is often damaged. Anne Tyler caused no less a literary authority and novelist than the late John Updike to remark that “Perhaps the Great American Writer (we hear so much about) in fact is not a man but a woman!” This praise is well merited – even if The Beginner’s Goodbye is not Ms Tyler’s best work. Now 70, she is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and this new offering is peopled with the usual array of quirky, offbeat characters - most of them involved in the most unlikely occupation. It’s a family publishing business that produces “how-to” manuals. Chief character is Aaron Woolcott, who marries Dorothy, a somewhat older woman, a doctor. Aaron, the novel’s “hero” if you can call him that, is a typical Tyler misfit. He has a “speech hesitation”. He is six feet four, Dorothy is “not quite five-one”. He is not handicapped, he feels, but has physical “differences” to others. And who but Tyler would open a novel thus: “The strangest thing about my wife’s return from the dead was how other people reacted”? The family-publishing business specialises in books with titles like The Beginner’s Cook Book, The Beginner’s Dinner Party etcetera... and hence the title of this novel, The Beginner’s Goodbye – how to deal with the death of a loved one. It Being a Tyler novel, Dorothy dies in the strangest circumstances, killed when a large oak falls on their house, specifically on the room she is sitting in – after a silly argument between husband and wife. The writer herself is widowed, and no doubt part of this novel is her own way of dealing with the grief of losing someone so close. But superb artist that Tyler is the writer never allows the novel and its flow to become maudlin. It may not be Tyler’s best work but if you are an admirer – as I am and always have been – don’t miss it. There is much to learn from it and her clear delightful prose.

1960’s PE backdrop for Ken Barris’s new book BETTIE GILIOMEE FORMER Port Elizabeth resident and award-winning poet and writer, Ken Barris, has launched his latest book Life Underwater with life in the 1960s in Port Elizabeth as the backdrop. Life Underwater tells the story of three brothers: Jude, Simon and Eli, first as children and teenagers, and then as grown men upon the death of their father. Ken Barris, who now lives in Cape Town, has won various literary awards, including the M-Net Book Prize, the Ingrid Jonker Prize, the Thomas Pringle Award and the Ad Donker/AA Life Award. He has been short-listed for the
Commonwealth Prize for Best Book in Africa, and twice for the Caine Prize for African Writing. PE Express asked him a few questions about his memories of Port Elizabeth and his new book.
Where did you grow up in PE and attend school?
We lived in Summerstrand, and I went to Summerwood Primary, and then Grey High. In those days, Summerwood was on the edge of the suburb – there was bush behind it, no houses.
When did you move to Cape Town?
I went to UCT and have stayed in Cape Town ever since, apart from five years in Paarl.
Do you still have family in PE?
I have some cousins there still. My brothers have emigrated, and my parents have passed away.
Why did you decide to use PE as the backdrop? Are events in the book based on real events and is it in some ways autobiographical?
The book is autobiographical to some degree, though much of it is entirely fictional. I’ve tried to be faithful to the emotions and interactions of the time, rather than to the facts.
What is your fondest memory of life in PE? I have so many I wouldn’t know where to begin. Many are centered on life on the beach.
Have you been to PE recently? If yes,

George was rushed to hospital after his sister found him vomiting and ‘blue’ in his bedroom on May 20 this year. His body temperature shot up and he died from heart failure. The doctor said he was entirely healthy and the thing that ruined his health was taking anabolic steroids. Had it not been for taking the steroids he would have been here today. These are just three of the many healthy young people who died way before their time due to anabolic steroids. Teen bodybuilding has gained increasing popularity in the last couple of years, with young teens going to the gym almost daily and this can be extremely unsafe and ineffective unless it is performed correctly. Bodybuilding is a sport or activity in which the primary objective is to develop the size of the skeletal muscles. There are many theories about the effects of weightlifting on young kids and teenagers. It is proven that weightlifting has many beneficial effects, such as higher self-esteem and confidence, becoming fit and healthy, and looking good. It is also a very good and effective way to treat depression.
But the real question is how young is too young for body-building training. It has been proven that the right time for teen bodybuilding is completely individual but it is usually best to start training at the ages of 15 or 16. Many people, especially parents, are confused because they don’t know what its effects are on growth. And there is still no scientific evidence to support any theory. Some books that promote healthy living suggest that weight training may even stimulate growth. The latest weight training studies done on teens showed only positive effects. The darkest side of body building is, however, the abuse of drugs that are commonly used by body builders. The most common and easily available drug for body buildersis a testosterone called “Test” in the bodybuilders’ world. These medications called anabolic steroids are frequently used in gyms and some gym instructors even encourage the use of steroids. Anabolic steroids are drugs that resemble the androgenic hormones such as testosterone. Many professional body builders are using them hoping that they will gain more muscle weight, strength, power, speed, endurance, and aggressiveness. Physiologically, male hormones such as testosterone are responsible for many developmental changes that occur mostly in puberty. Testosterone
has two main effects on your body: Anabolic effects promote muscle building. Androgenic effects are responsible for male traits, such as facial hair and a deeper voice. Anabolic steroids come with serious side effects. Men may develop prominent breasts, baldness, shrunken testicles, a higher voice and infertility. Both men and women might experience severe acne, liver abnormalities andtumours,increasedlow-densitylipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol), aggressive behaviours, rage or violence, psychiatric disorders, such as depression and drug dependence. There are many other drugs that are being used by professional body builders on a daily basis, such as different kinds of amino acids, Beta-hydroxy-Beta-methylbutyrate, supplements of chromium, calcium, iron etc. Most of the professional body builders are also using some very strong diuretics just a day or two before big competitions because it will free their body from excess water. For a growing number of athletes, winning at all costs includes taking performance-enhancing drugs. Some may appear to achieve physical gains from such drugs, but at what cost? The truth is, the long-term effects of these drugs haven’t been rigorously studied. And short-term benefits are tempered
by many drawbacks. Steroids have been around for over seventy years. Over the years, the use of steroids by teenagers has become more of a public issue.. The danger of using and abusing steroids not only involves serious side effects, but there are also many health risks. A few of the more severe health risks involved in steroid use include liver cancer, heart attacks, an increase in cholesterol levels, and even death. Some of the side effects, such as acne and premature hair loss, are present in teenagers and adults. A few of the side effects that are more common in teenagers include a premature stop in the lengthening of bones, fatigue, an aggressive personality, induced gynecomastia and chronic gonadotrophin (HCG). Teenagers who use anabolic steroids usually do so without medical supervision or guidance. Even though the use of steroids has become illegal unless prescribed by a doctor, steroids are still being used and abused. Steroids are considered a Schedule III Substance. They are most commonly purchased over the Internet. Although steroids may seem like a quick and easy way to enhance strength and a person’s overall outer appearance, many people do not realize the destructive consequences the drugs have on a person’s body. The simple truth is that steroids will harm your body more than they will
help it. What will steroids do to you? Consider the following: Steroids lower sperm count making the possibility of having a child lower, steriods will make you more aggressive, steriods will cause you to become sterile eventually, and steriods will bring you problems that you never wanted to have. The side effects of weight-lifting supplementsincludekidneydamage, muscle pulls, liver dysfunction and dehydration.
Guidelines for young people who want to start weight lifting
The most important thing that one should do before any weight lifting is to obtain a physical examination to rule out any medical conditions which can be complicated by strength training. These include high blood pressure, back problems, or hernias. Always start with low weights. Proper breathing techniques are a crucial part of any successful training. All trainings of strength should be supervised and monitored closely. Training must be at least 20-30 minutes long and it shouldn’t be done daily. For effective and noticeable results it should be done 2 to 4 times per week. Any injury that happened during the training must be evaluated before the program is continued. Warm-up activities should be performed before each training session In general, resting approximately one minute between sets is recommended for weight-training beginners.

The Eastern Province Child and Youth Care Centre (formerly known as the EP Children’s Home) was founded in 1889 and is the oldest centre of its kind in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. In 1905, they moved into their present premises in Lennox Street, Glendinningvale (opposite the SABC). According to the Home’s director, Terry Hattingh, from 1905 to 1985 the majestic white buildings that can be seen from Lennox Street served as home to the children. “In 1985 it was, however, decided to build cottages so that our children could experience family living rather than a hostel environment. We use one of the original buildings for administration and the other two are rented out to generate income for the centre,” said Hattingh. Seven of their eight double- storey cottages each house 15 children and their Child Care worker. She is assisted by an assistant who comes in 6 hours per day and a general assistant for the household duties. “Imagine having to get 15 children up and ready for school each day and to make sure all 15 of your children have done their homework!” “Children are placed in our Centre as a last resort if they are found to be in need of care by the Children’s Court. This is often because they have
been exposed to violence and abuse or have been neglected by their caregivers. In total, we accommodate 104 children of all races between the ages of 4 and 18 years of age,” said Hattingh. According to Hattingh, they are each year faced with the challenge of balancing their budget for normal operating expenses for the food and clothing for their children as the shortfall for total operating costs and the amount they receive from the state by way of subsidies is 60% of the budget. “This percentage increases every year as the state has pegged the amount per child to R1 700 per month. The amount has not increased since 2008, yet food, transport and clothing costs have rocketed,” said Hattingh. According to Hattingh, people can help the Home in the following ways: • Renting their office premises of which they have 500 square metres presently available • Donating unwanted clothing, linen and household goods • Adopting and supporting a cottage • Regular monthly monetary donations – no matter how small. • Buying a few essentials every time you do your shopping and bringing them to the home: foodstuffs such as rice, sugar, coffee, toiletries – soap, toothpaste, shampoo and stationery for school and projects. • Donating unwanted furniture – they urgently need lounge suites and wardrobes. For more information, contact Terry Hattingh at 0 041 373 7602.

Win a Maguey Agave Nectar hamper EIGHT lucky PE Express readers can each win a Maguey Agave Nectar hamper to the value of R400 each. To enter for the competition, simply visit the PE Express website at www.pe-express.co.za and click on the competitions tab to answer a simple questrion. Maguey Agave Nectar has a fabulous range of Syrups and Sugar which not only taste divine, but are actually good for you! Maguey syrups and sugar are especially suitable for babies and children as they have been tested in cough mixtures and are used to treat ADHD. So they are great for mothers who worry about that “sugar rush”.
Each Maguey Agave Nectar Hamper to the value of R400, contains:
, Maguey Syrup, , Maguey Raw Agave Syrup , Maguey Chocolate Syrup. , Maguey Agave Sugar , AgaveFlora prebiotics. AgaveFlora prebiotics are food for probiotics which are the health-promoting bacteria found in the digestive system and which help increase the Bifidobacteria and secrete acids as they grow. This changes the pH in the colon and helps to suppress the growth of harmful bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, Clostridia, and Campylobacter, so tummy problems like diarrhoea are relieved. AgaveFlora is made up mainly of non-digestible fibre so it does not affect blood sugar levels and therefore is safe for use by diabetics. The syrups have a long shelf life and do not solidify in cold weather so remain easy to pour. They blend and dissolve easily in all types of foods and bakes and are suitable for toppings, baking, drinks and sauces. In addition, as Agave Sugar is one and a half times as sweet as normal table sugar, spoon for spoon, you use far less in recipes and drinks. The moisture retention properties are excellent so baked goods remain fresh for much longer. Visit the website www.agavenectarsugar.com to see recipes you can enjoy with the Maguey range. Available from Spar Stores, Health Stores and select pharmacies, Maguey Agave Syrups sell from R65 and Maguey Agave Sugar from R36. The AgaveFlora Prebiotics sell for R90. For more info, phone 0 071 678 7033 or visit the website www.agavenectar.co.za.

non points towards the wreck site of the Portuguese galleon, Sacramento, which foundered on June 30,1647. The route continues past the Sacramento monument towards the far end of the sandy bay, aptly named Cannon Bay, where the ruins of a mill, which used to crush seashells, are located, and then on to the Sacramento Tea Room. The hike will start at 9am from the cannon in Schoenmakerskop. The duration of the hike is approximately two to three hours. Participation is free.

The event this year will host the SA K1 river championships, the 18th time in 28-years since the first national river champs was awarded the race in 1984. The success of the Hansa Fish lies in a unique blend of guaranteed water releases, exciting rapids and weirs on the river, warm Klein Karoo hospitality and the festive vibe off the water. On the water the country’s top marathonners have committed to being on the start line, with several of the big guns, including world champ Hank McGregor and four times Hansa Fish K1 champion Len Jenkins jetting back from the marathon worlds in Rome two weeks before the race. Eastern Cape canoeing supporters are also excited about the prospect of Plett ‘Golden Girl’ Michéle Eray making her return to the race after being laid low last year by a crippling wrist injury. Hometown paddling hero Greg Louw is relishing the opportunity to tackle one of the most competitive river marathon fields of the year. Louw has set his sights on returning the race’s trophy to the Eastern Cape in a race he describes as the pinnacle of the river marathon calendar each year. This year the Hansa Fish will wrap up with another of its hugely popular music concerts at the Sports Complex in Cradock, featuring Ashtray Electric and Lonehill Estate on the Friday night and chart-toppers GoodLuck and Pascal & Pearce on the Saturday night. The event further enjoys massive support from university students and under 23 paddlers, who enthusiastically support the annual themed competition, offering a prize of the paddlers’ weight in Hansa Pilsener for the crew adjudged to be ‘best dressed’ to this year’s theme, ‘Pimp Me Viking’.
