IRONMAN: NEW COURSE BRINGS ATHLETES CLOSER TO THEIR FANS

IronMan action this Sunday Find a 12-page supplement on the IRONMAN in this week’s edition of PE Express.

REPORTER

T

HIS year the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship race will be bringing triathletes even closer to their fans.

On Sunday April 10, Nelson Mandela Bay will be swarming with all that is IRONMAN and thousands of IRONFans that will be hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite IRONMAN. Due to a change of the course of the race, the bike course now takes athletes out on two flat, fast laps of 90 km on one of the most spectacular bike courses on the IRONMAN circuit. The new route takes athletes along the coast at Marine Drive, delivering sweeping views of the ocean and the rugged coastline along a marine protected area, before moving slightly inland at Seaview on an undulating scenic countryside section. Athletes return along the coast to the transi-

tion area to start the run. With the first change to the run course in its eleven-year history, the new run course will bring athletes closer to their fans and friends than ever thanks to four loops along Marine Drive where a whopping 100 000 IRONFans are expected to show their support. The swim start is at 6:30am on Sunday morning, and spectators can make their way to Hobie Beach to view the exciting start of the race when athletes begin their swim towards Kings Beach. The bike portion of the race is expected to start around 7:45am. From this time, right until approximately 4:15pm, spectators and residents of Marine Drive, Schoenmakerskop, Beachview and Sardinia Bay can expect athletes to pass by. IRONFans and spectators can expect some of the professional athletes to begin their run portion of the race around 1:20pm and the cut off time for the last athlete will be approximately at 11:55pm. The run portion will be able to be viewed on

Marine Drive from Second Avenue to Admiralty Way. The men’s challenge will be one of the most open races in the history of the event with a strong, balanced professional men’s field set to line up on Sunday. With an impressive record and having won in South Africa in 2013, Swiss athlete Ronnie Schildknecht will be one to watch. Schildknecht became the first man to win seven consecutive IRONMAN titles at IRONMAN Switzerland in 2013. The South African challenge will be an interesting one with Matt Trautman, James Cunnama and Kyle Buckingham all capable of achieving the win. The women’s event will also be raced by one of the strongest professional women’s fields that this event has ever seen. Defending champion Jodie Swallow (34), will have to pull out all the stops to ensure that she can claim back-to-back wins at the Standard Bank IRONMAN African

Pictured is Port Elizabeth estate agent, Mariëtte Hattingh training for her 10th Ironman competi tion. Hattingh is one of the favourites to win her age group (50 to 54 years). In Port Elizabeth she has already won her age group three times. If she wins again, she can expect her fourth invitation to the Ironman World Champi onship in Kona, Hawaii, where she hopes to achieve a first time top10 position in her age group. PHOTO: DEON FERREIRA Championship. Fellow Brit and four-time IRONMAN champion, Lucy Gossage (36), will be aiming to claim top spot after her impressive second place finish in 2015. Another resilient contender from the United Kingdom is Susie Cheetham (30). To those who would not like to miss out on the action, but cannot make it down to the action, live streaming of the race will be up and running at www.ironman.com.

childhood education REPORTER A BRAND new building tailor-made for budding foundation phase (Grade R to 3) teachers, studying towards their BEd degrees at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) was launched on Monday. The new building is at NMMU’s Missionvale Campus and has been designed around a brand new curriculum and teaching philosophy as part of NMMU’s bold efforts to grow more teachers in this critical first phase of a child’s schooling. The university’s re-curriculated BEd Foundation Phase programme is a benchmark approach in South Africa’s Foundation Phase education. Dr Tulsi Morar, Operations Manager of the Faculty of Education said, “We have deliberately chosen Missionvale Campus as the location for the re-curriculated Foundation Phase programme, as it is situated close to a large number of primary schools in Zwide, Missionvale and New Brighton.” Morar added, “Its situation complements the Foundation Phase programme’s practice of partnering with schools that provide the challenges we need to address in South Africa if education and teacher education is to make a real difference.” The new R56m building, which was completed in January after a year-long construction process, has been custom-designed to ac-

commodate the BEd Foundation Phase’s new curriculum, and the Reggio Emilia philosophy of child development behind it. This philosophy, with its metaphor of “the hundred languages of children”, draws on drama, music, art and languages to help teachers tap into the full potential of the children they are teaching. The new building’s inviting, versatile learning spaces with movable furniture can be used for lectures, music, drama and meeting rooms. They can also be utilised for afterschool programmes, such as literacy development. “The building has been designed to accommodate 400 students,” said NMMU Construction Manager: Infrastructure Bill McLachlan. From this year, 200 third and fourth-year students are attending lectures in the new building on Missionvale Campus, but all Foundation Phase students will shift there in 2017. Postgraduate facilities have been included to encourage greater numbers of students to conduct postgraduate research in Foundation Phase education. Several Masters and PhD students are already enrolled. Expected to meet the needs of today’s “digital generation”, each lecture venue is equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment and WiFi. The main lecture venue, seating 100 students, has a “hearing loop” to accommodate students that are hearing impaired.

Student complains about overcrowded lecture halls AN irate Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) student, Ashleigh De Lange, complained about overcrowding during lectures and asked other NMMU students to share her Facebook comment. On March, 16, De Lange voiced her frustration about the seating problem where a large number of students often have to sit on the floor or outside lecture halls. De Lange posted the following comment on Facebook: “I’ve been facing the issue of overcrowding at NMMU since day one. I feel it’s time to name and shame. There has been nothing done about it, and instead the university knows that students will eventually stop coming to classes when they have to stand in the hallway for each class. I’m not talking about a seating problem for one or two extra students. I’m talking 50+ students either sitting along the stairs or outside of classes in hopes to get a tiny hint of what is being said in the lecture.” De Lange added, “This is an issue that the timetabling office is well aware of, yet nothing has, more likely won’t be done. It is now the end

of Block (Term) 1. I have managed to have a seat in one specific class twice this term. Many others I’ve spoken to are in the same boat. In other classes there are NO tables or chairs. Where students have to go beg borrow and steal chairs from other classes, leaving many sitting on tables.” “They’ve enrolled more than 15 000 new students in 2016; they cannot even seat the current students. If paying R20000- R50000 per year only to have to sit in hallways or not even coming close to entering the class is what you’re after, then you’ve found a winner,” she wrote. NMMU’s Facebook page responded to De Lange’s post and mentioned, “We are aware of the present challenges and understand your frustration. We will pass this information on to the relevant staff.” NMMU spokesperson Debbie Derry said NMMU is aware of overcrowding in some of its venues and is working to resolve these challenges. “The university faces such challenges annually as it tries to anticipate numbers and allocate lecture venues accordingly. This year it has been faced with the additional challenges because of the interventions to assist academical-

ly deserving but financially-disadvantaged students at NMMU. The knock-on effect has been an increase in module registrations – a 10% increase, as opposed to the usual 2% increase,” Derry said. She added that at present, NMMU has about 2 100 modules on the timetable. This translates to around 8 000 classes that are scheduled on the timetable in terms of the curriculums of around 350 progammes. “This aside, NMMU acknowledges that students should not have to sit on the floor of lecture halls and is working with lecturers to find creative solutions. It did, for example, open up three

venues in the Science buildings ahead of time to accommodate students in overcrowded venues,” Derry said. “Though the figures supplied by the student in the Facebook post are inaccurate (we have welcomed about 6 000 first-year students), this should not detract from the students’ very real concerns. We acknowledged the students’ post when it appeared,” she added. “NMMU apologises for any inconvenience caused and wishes to assure its students that it is endeavouring to rectify the issue of overcrowding.” – REPORTER

BED & LOUNGE

My husband left me and went to London with another woman for 5 years! I tried to bring him back, I visited priests and healers for help but failed. Ligan looked through the mirror and assured me that he’ll call within 4 days, and I’ll pick him at the airport. He really phoned and he’s return after 5 years! He accurately read my fortune (for R200 conMaria and Jacob sultation fee) & told me all my problems without (happily in love again) me mentioning a word. He even used a mirror to show me real-faces of people who were trying to pull me down. LIGAN performed special-prayers for me, cleansed me from badluck & also gave me powerful lovecrystals plus a special-ring to fix my financial problems. Four (4) days after prayers my husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I am very happy, we recently reconciled! Like me, all clients I have been referring to him always got GUARANTEED RESULTS in a few days.

MBDA marketing and communications manager Luvuyo Bangazi, said part of the work and renovation planning have already taken place last month. “If all goes according to plan, the Campanile will be reopened to the public by March or April next year,” Bangazi said. He added that Campanile Memorial renovations will cost about R5 million. “We do have a budget that we are working on. We do not have a final budget but roughly just over R5 million is estimated at the moment,” Bongazi said. The Campanile Memorial is about 53.5m tall with 204 steps which lead to the top of the tower where a carillon of 23 huge bells can be viewed. Bongazi explained that the Campanile Memorial’s makeover has been long overdue. “The Campanile is 92 years old; the bells are about 83 years old. The Campanile has withstood weather impacts, storms and floods. A structural assessment has been conducted and a lot of work needs to be done.” “The structural assessment showed that the Campanile is not safe. The steel structure where the bells hang is the most affected. The building is 92 years old and it should have been restored long ago,” he said. The Campanile, which was built to commemorate the 1820 Settlers, stands in Jetty Street and took up to five years to build. Bongazi mentioned that they are planning to modernise the building. “We are looking at modernising the Campanile by bringing cultural themes to the bell mechanisms. The modernising is to be in relation to the history but also relevant to current democracy,” he said.

ADVERTORIAL: VIVA GYM

Viva Gym – the gym for the people has arrived Viva Gym – launched in South Africa in 2014 – entered the market with the intention of turning the fitness game on its head. The international business model focuses on giving gym members exactly what they need, and by cutting out all the expensive extras, they are able to provide excellent service without costing the earth. Another reason they’re such a hit? They don’t force customers into long-term contracts that are virtually impossible to get out of. The Viva Gym in Port Elizabeth is situated in the 17th Quarter Shopping Centre, is over 2 000 m2 in size, and boasts a host of fitness solutions. These include a top of the range aerobic studio (with up to 160 classes per month), the biggest spin studio in PE uniquely offering virtual spinning, a cardio area, functional area, free weights as well as free parking and Wi-Fi. The gym is able to offer a large range of world-class equipment at unbelievably low membership fees by being a “dry gym” – no pools and no steam rooms. “We are a company for the people and we like to put into action what we stand for,” said SA CEO, Chase Emson and because of this, Viva Gym has been actively (pun intended) involved in various community projects from ‘Run for Retina’ to ‘Winter Woolie’ and also to their current initiative: The Viva Gym Bike Drive, which was launched to provide bikes and cycling equipment to the underprivileged in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth. The Viva Walmer Bike Drive collection day will be on April 23 and they are calling on the public to get involved by donating old bicycles and cycling equipment to their premises on William Moffet Expressway.

morrow and focus on leadership skills, modelling and public speaking. All contestants need to make a difference in their communities during the competition. The Miss Teen Commonwealth SA pageant is in its third-year and the main prize is R15 000 cash plus other prizes. Through the Commonwealth Pageant, a platform is created for women of all ages to become charity and culture ambassadors within South Africa and the broader international community. The title holders become involved in charitable causes and uphold the aims and objectives of the Commonwealth.

17-year-old Asanda Mchunu is a strongly principled young lady with a firm set of morals and values. She is currently a first-year Media, Communication and Culture student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and models at Sophisticate Models where she is a trainee modelling teacher. She has been involved in various charity work in PE; the latest was the Gucci Flora fashion show to raise much needed funds for Northwood Children’s Hospice which took place in February. The former Collegiate Girls’ High School pupil was crowned Miss Teen Port Elizabeth 2015 which made her focus more of her energy on the youth and children in her community. In 2014, Mchunu was also crowned Miss Junior Teen South Africa representing the Eastern Cape in Pretoria. Mchunu believes that children should be taught from a tender age how to be confident and accepting of challenges as those will assist them to grow naturally into strong leaders of the future. This is why her chosen charity is Rolemodels Imfundo Foundation. “I will make it my duty to groom the children and youth in general on a positive mindset approach because anything is possible if you believe in yourself,” Mchunu said. “Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa will also help me to fully develop into a leader I have the potential to be, which will enable me to make a difference in my community and fly the Port Elizabeth flag high,” she added. The grand finale takes place in July. ‘Tegnologie beroof kinders van

spierontwikkeling’ HEILIE COMBRINCK

’n Direkte gevolg hiervan is ’n baie lae of swak spiertonus – verswakte of slapper spiere wat gewone spel moeiliker maak, en by dié

“So ’n wegbreek-aand doen ons baie goed.

Dit staan tans bekend as 44 Valskermregiment.

Local dancers represents EC at SA champs SENIOR dancers from the Ellen Bunting Dance Academy are representing the Eastern Cape at the South African Championships of the Performing Arts in Rustenburg this week. The dancers compete over a ten-day period from April 1 to April 10 and are competing in various styles including contemporary, lyrical, hip hop and tap dance. “This is a first for the Ellen Bunting Dance Academy; however the girls are a strong group of performers and I have no doubt that they’ll grow from this opportunity, not just as individuals but as a team. They’re going to be exposed to various art

forms from around the country, which will inevitably help them in developing their individual strengths and hopefully encourage them to challenge themselves for next year’s competition,” said teacher and owner of the Ellen Bunting Dance Academy, Simóne Buchner. Buchner added that the South African Championships of the Performing Arts aim to develop and co-ordinate programmes designed to enhance the well-being of the Performing Arts Industry within South Africa, by creating an infrastructure to ensure that all contestants have a gateway to become a world champion.

HE ditched the chalk board for the stage, and now this qualified teacher is fast becoming a familiar face on the South African comedy scene. Cape Town based comedian and radio sports presenter Dalin Oliver used to be a qualified high school mathematics and history teacher until the comedy bug bit him recently. The 27-yearold has since managed to capture audiences with his clean cut energetic brand of comedy. From recording his first DVD of his debut one man show I Came, I Taught, I Left, to being featured on Comedy Central and performing at sold out runs at the National Arts Festival and Baxter Theatre. Oliver’s skill set is broadening daily and was put to the test when he played one of the lead roles in his first feature film, Finders Keepers, a South African comedy set to be released in June this year. I Came, I Taught, I Left will be

performed live at the PE Opera House Barn Theatre from April 14 to 16. Tickets cost R70 per person and can be purchased from Computicket. For block bookings or charity enquiries contact Ranique Roberts on 074 754 1596 WIN! WIN! WIN! The PE Express is giving away five double tickets to the show on Friday, April 15. Montego donates 27 000 units of treats to animal charities over Easter MONTEGO Pet Nutrition donated 27 000 units of treats to 61 different animal charities in and around South Africa over the Easter holidays. There are many deserving animal charities that do amazing work and Montego Pet Nutrition wanted to thank them for their commitment to the shelters, and for their unselfish and tireless work they do for aban-

doned and abused animals, by donating some scrumptious treats over the Easter period. The Montego sales consultants got to meet some of the furry beneficiaries as they handdelivered Montego treats to the different shelters across the country over the past month. “We’re delighted with the great support

that we’ve received from the company over the past few years and are excited to spoil our animals with delicious treats,” said Adrienne Olivier of Funda Nenja. Wilfred Cawood, Montego Pet Nutrition Marketing Manager, added “As a company we’re proud to be able to support these charities and are happy that our furry family members didn’t go to sleep with empty stom-

achs over this Easter season”. Local charities that benefitted from Montego’s donation are: . Save a Pet Port Elizabeth . Domestic Animal Care – Ellen Dunning in Port Elizabeth . Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) Port Elizabeth . SPCA Uitenhage

It’s allyoucaneat Portuguese food at the Bayside Pantry buffet this April. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Explore exciting Portuguese cuisine at The Bayside Pantry A SCRUMPTIOUS variety of meat, seafood and vegetable dishes await food explorers at The Boardwalk’s Bayside Pantry in April when the rich and exciting flavours of authentic Portuguese cuisine will feature on the buffet every Wednesday night. Traditional Portuguese food tends to be hearty and oftentimes spicy, with a variety of textures featuring in stews, casseroles and grills. “People often think peri-peri chicken when they think of Portuguese food but it is so much more than that. We have included an exciting array of Portuguese dishes, just as a Portuguese grandma would make, on the buffet to showcase just how diverse this cuisine really is,” said Nqobile Majozi, Marketing Manager at The Boardwalk. To start, guests have a choice of soups such as kale and potato soup with chorizo (caldo verde) or salads such as chicken and quinoa salad; salada russa (tuna salad); Portuguese sardine and potato salad, and spicy corn, pepper and red kidney bean salad. True to Portuguese tradition, there is also a selection of cold fish and meat dishes such as baccalou with chickpea and olives; spicy crispy chicken strips, and ox tongue with salsa Portuguesa. Peri-Peri is dedicated a station of its own with favourites such as chicken liver peri-peri

and peri peri fish stew with potatoes amongst the items to try. A choice of grilled and roasted meats, Portuguese style, is available at the grill and carvery stations. Perhaps the most exciting is the hot pot station where there are authentic stews, casseroles and vegetables to sample. Amongst these are cacoila Portuguese stewed beef; Portuguese barbequed pork; Portuguese pasta fazole; braised spinach and chick pea; green beans, sweet corn and chorizo, and Portuguese marinated carrots. The feast is nicely rounded off with tempting puddings and treats such as molotof meringue with fresh fruit; poached pear and honeycomb parfait, and fillozes (Portuguese doughnuts) amongst others. The Portuguese Buffet is available during April on Wednesdays between 6pm and 10pm. The cost is R149 per person. Booking is essential on 041 507 7793. Win! Win! Win! The PE Express is giving two couples the chance to experience the all-you-can-eat Portuguese buffet at the Bayside Pantry this April. To stand a chance to win, find this photo on our Facebook page (PE Express Newspaper) and comment with your email address. Winners will be contacted via email.

We would like to hear from our readers if they have any interesting news stories or events happening in their community.

My man het teruggekom. Alles danksy Mnr. Bobby. Skakel Mnr. Bobby by 073 808 8804 .

X1R9JQC9-060416-PX-ebrbaa-drive

For many years I have suffered in my marriage, I had daily fights with my husband and I had no peace because of my jealous family, friends and my in-laws who also hated me. I felt betrayed and heartbroken by my own people, sleepless nights and stress nearly killed me. I tried many healers but they all failed to help until I heard about Eva on Radio. With the only R200 I had in life, Eva took my fortune readings and surprised me by telling accurately about my husband`s hidden family secrets. They then made special prayers and gave me powerful Indian herbal holy water for cleansing and special oil. Within just days a miracle happened , all my enemies and family in-laws who hated me came back to make peace with me. After suffering 20 painful years, today we are the happiest couple and I am grateful. Because of Eva’s special prayers of blessings, I have became a successful business woman.

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

A youngster with gallons of talent THE KISS of Death belongs to the crime novel. The Smile of Death in cricketing terms belongs with little doubt to a fair-haired New Zealand rugby fullback named Damian McKenzie. He is just 20 and last weekend, leading the Chiefs’ 48-23 demolition of the Brumbies in Canberra, he must surely have anxiety-packed shivers down the spines of his opponents whenever he touched the ball. It’s all in the cheeky grin he directs at the very heart of the TV camera as he lines up his kicks at the posts. It’s enough to unsettle the toughest opponents. It certainly looked that way as the youngster sent three conversions and four penalties through the posts, and for good measure added a try – his seventh of the season – in the dying minutes of the Chiefs’ defeat of the Brumbies. The overall tally of 23 points from McKenzie made up very nearly half his team’s winning total. Watch this youngster. He has every reason to grin. Playing this kind of rugby it can’t be long before this young smiling assassin climbs to his highest rung of his country’s rugby ladder – the right to wear the All Black jersey itself. Nearer home – Jo’burg’s Ellis Park – the Lions somehow managed to squander 60 % of possession against the visiting Crusaders to go down to the New Zealanders in a tight, hard-fought match. This was not the usual lion-hearted stuff from the local side and coach Johan Ackermann must have seethed at some of the chances his team let slip. To a disappointingly small crowd here at home in PE, the Southern Kings scored a see-

sawing 33-28 victory over the Sunwolves. It was the Kings’ first Super Rugby win of the season. The teams were 23-23 at the break. It was a much-improved outing by the Eastern Cape outfit, who were particularly impressive on defence. The Bulls at home to the Cheetahs – after leading 20-10 at the break – just managed to hold on for a 23-18 win in a tense second half. The Free Staters, too, showed great courage on defence. It looked like anybody’s game in a tense first half as the visitors gradually fought their way back. But it was not to be as the Bulls hung on tenaciously. Don’t ask what cuss word burst from Durban-born England opening batsman, Jason Roy’s lips as he rejoined his teammates after his knock in the final of the World T20 cricket match against the West Indies in Kolkata at the weekend. Who could blame him? He was out for a very large ugly duck to the second ball of the match. Things might have been much different if he’d delivered his usual steady contribution to England’s tally. With the game see-sawing back and forth until England were finally out for 156 it was still anyone’s game. The West Indians, too, lost early wickets and with three overs to go the game was still very much in the balance. In a thrilling finish, however, Windies’ hero, Marlon Samuels, and the towering young Braithwaite, also undefeated, after smashing four successive sixes, saw the West Indies grab a memorable victory. What a match it was! With cricket and rugby of this calibre to stay at home for, one has to wonder: how are the movie theatres doing these days!

FOR nine years the Bahrain Grand Prix was run under the hot desert sun. For nearly a decade it wasn’t a race marked as one to look forward to and it almost always produced the most lacklustre racing of a season. But it would only take pushing back the starting time a few hours and a few thousand floodlights to ignite the Bahrain Grand Prix into a spectacle of note. And in 2016 it delivered once more. As if to emphasise its transformation the drama started before a lap could be turned, in anger. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was forced into retirement on the formation lap. While Ferrari has stopped short of calling it an engine failure, the plumes of smoke pouring from the rear of the car say otherwise. In Australia it was Raikkonen who retired with a turbo failure and there too Ferrari went out of its way to assure that there is no reliability concern. But even though its only two races into the season they’re developing a bit of an uncomfortable and undesirable habit of only getting one car to the chequered flag. Lewis Hamilton was sitting pretty in pole position with teammate Nico Rosberg alongside on the front row of the grid, but it wasn’t to last very long for the Brit. Hamilton struggled to get off the line and ended up tangling with the Williams of Valtteri Bottas and dropped down to seventh. From fourth place Raikkonen made a poor start and dropped behind a pair of fast starting Williams’ and the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo. However, the Finn followed with some tenacious overtaking got himself into second place. By this stage the leading Mercedes of Rosberg was already eleven seconds up the road. The 2007 champion maintained a comparable pace with the Mercedes and even managed to reduce the gap to three seconds through strategy and occasional superior pace. But the number 7 Ferrari was never close enough to challenge for the lead of the race. As Hamilton recovered to third with some

damage to the right-side barge board Rosberg wrapped up his fifth win in a row. For years we’ve been calling for Rosberg to step up his game and make it a championship battle worth watching and he’s done it now. There is still an incredibly long season ahead but Rosberg has started 2016 in the way that he’s needed to, in a way that will give Hamilton a lot to think about. With the top three positions established the rest of the points paying positions was an intense fight right to the chequered flag. The availability of three tyre compounds once again added a dynamism to the racing as drivers opted for strategies that ran the gamut of possibilities. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth thanks to an early stop and rolling the dice by running the final stint on the medium tyres. As the race strategy engineer for the Haas F1 team Ruth Buscombe once again worked a brilliant strategy for Romain Grosjean. The Frenchman ran most of the race on the supersoft compound which allowed him to scythe through the field. He ran as high as fourth at one stage and ultimately finished fourth in what is turning out to be a fairytale debut for the American team. Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen finished sixth ahead of Daniil Kvyat in seventh who recovered from starting fifteenth on the grid. After a difficult tyre strategy Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas finished eighth and ninth for Williams. Driver of the day belongs to the final points scorer Stoffel Vandoorne. The 24-year-old Belgian driver stood in for Fernando Alonso who is recovering from fractured ribs sustained in the Australian Gp crash. The difficulty of having to deal with the complexity of a 2016 F1 car, to understand the Pirelli tyres, and to fight with seasoned F1 drivers, must not be underestimated. Vandoorne put all of his talents on display and blitzed his F1 debut. The 2016 season hasn’t begun to hit its stride and already an immense battle is brewing up and down the field. Roll on China.

and sales personnel to ensure focussed service. Group CEO Garrick Bowker said, “We are excited about the move. The investment into the dealership will enhance the customer experience with these unique brands.” “With the high visibility on Mount Road and an easy access location specifically for aftersales services, we can expect to gain market share benefitting from our strong used car operation and large service capacity.” Bowker added. This enthusiasm is well founded, as these brands will now be backed by a large service and parts operation in North End at the Tav-

cor Technical Centre in Perkins Street. The technical centre will have the capacity for 16 hoists and the ability to service in excess of 40 vehicles per day. With an estimated dedicated staff complement of 20, Jeep, Alfa, Fiat, Suzuki, Chrysler and Dodge customers can expect an individualised ownership experience at the new dealership. “Our challenge will be to come on stream as soon as possible to offer product support through the parts and technical sides of the business,” said General Manager Andrew Angles, pointing to the Tavcor Motor Group’s unwavering commitment to parts availability

and excellent product knowledge. “With more than 65 years’ experience in the automotive industry and investing in our people, the addition of these legendary brands will fit with the proud history that encompasses the Tavcor Motor Group and we are confident that these customers will have a noticeably different experience,” Angles said. Adding to this sentiment, Angles said, “We understand that our Jeep, Alfa and Fiat customers enjoy a high level of customisation and we welcome performance and accessory brand Mopar to our stable at the new dealership.” Tavcor Auto Sales will commence business on May 1.

Summer open water swimming and beach events calendar comes to a close

THE 10th round of the popular aQuellé Ocean Racing Series last Sunday brought the summer open water swimming and beach events calendar to a close.

Season XI started in early October 2015 and concluded after 10 race days in a season which has not seen too much favourable weather on race days and also clashed with several other water sport events. Despite this, the Series which is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay remains Africa’s largest family beach event having attracted just over 4 000 entries this season. One of the successes coming out of the Series this year has been the well supported Masakhane Future Stars programme which is backed by Pagden’s Attorneys, Willard Batteries and Caltex Eastern Cape. With just under 100 PDI’s included in the programme and given the opportunity each race day to take part in the Series and other key sports events in the city, it’s been terrific to see their growth and enjoyment of being part of such sporting events.

After Sunday’s Round 10 which was held in near perfect conditions with numerous international competitors taking part ahead on this weekend’s Ironman event, the overall Series prize giving function was held at News Cafe. Overall Series winners for the Kids 1km Beach Run (6u) were Aiden Joubert and Roxy Geldenhuys with runners up Max Owen and Kayleigh Marais and Jacques van Wyk and Kaitlyn Richter being placed third overall. The 8u age group was won by Jayson Archibald and Megan Owen with Tristan Marais snd Sarah Venter coming second and Daniel Richter and Tayla Wilson in third. In the 10u age group, Jeandre Hatting and Abbie Mitchell won from Kaiyil Whitaker and Ilze Hattingh with Neal Marais and Lara Kleinhans in third place whilst Connor Roff and Bella Archibald took the honours in the 12u category from Daniel Heine and KerriLee Barnard with Connor Mitchell and Chelsea Cooke in third place. The winners’ medals and floating trophies

in the 5km Beach Walk went to Grobbie Grobler and Belinda Niemand with Juan Slabbert and Emily Stemmett in second place with Andrew Armstrong and Milé Vermaak in third place. In the 5km Beach walk it was 12-year-old Tara Sacke and Johnny Muller that won the category from Wayne Mitchell and Reda Potts with Samkelo Tetyana and Sanet Owen in third place. In the water, the 1km honours went to Ian Venter and Kirsten Mariott with runners up Keegan Cooke and Amy Mardon whilst Joshua Bellairs and Tracy Taverner finished third. In the 2km swim Daniel Jones and Antonella Saporta won the Series ahead of Josh McGrath and Denise Bosman with Jarryd Cooke and Phillipa Holtz in third place. Wayne Jones and Rebecca Newman took the 3km swim honours from Dylan Smith and Brigitte Melly with Eben Haarhoff and Jenny Potts in third place overall. Following the success of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series, the Nutritech Winter Series will be born and take part on the first Sunday of June through to September and will feature triathlon, duathlon, open water swim and a run.

Full results from Sunday’s Ocean Racing Series and the overall age group results are on the Series website www.oceanracingseries. com. The Series will return for Season 12 in mid October 2016.

Edge muck run entries flow in Another great attendance is expected at this year’s Edge Muck Run as entries are flowing in quickly ahead of the Eastern Cape’s muckiest race on April 23 and 24 at Bushpig Adventures. An extremely fun-filled 5km obstacle course with a 2km kids version available appeals to anyone wanting to do something different. Due to demand, the Edge Muck Run features a 5km run on the Saturday afternoon and another on the Sunday morning with both open to individuals or groups of 5 people. Woodlands Dairy will be hosting a kids entertainment zone and also offering great hamper prizes for the best dressed in all the races. All participants and spectators are encouraged to bring all unwanted clothing, blankets and bedding to donate to the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise for their warm winter campaign. See www.MuckRun.co.za for further information.

The Power of Print In light of the “Digital” take over, the power of the Printed Medium has been heavily underestimated. This session will take you through one of the most challenging yet exciting times of print media. Are newspapers and magazines still relevant and what will become of the world’s printing presses? Is there still value in print for multinational companies and how can you diversify your marketing budgets to where print still plays a significant role? Want to know how to write an almost perfect press release, don’t miss out on the tips that will be shared?

Why you should attend

Presented by Tasmia Ismail, General Manager, Die Burger and EP Media

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 6 APRIL 2016

Positive future for track cycling development in Bay REPORTER EXHILARATING track cycle racing continued in full force on day one of the 2016 South African Omnium Championships at the Westbourne Oval on Saturday 2 April. Port Elizabeth lived up to its reputation of being the windy city with strong winds throughout the day, which added to the challenge for most of the riders on the track. The exciting Omnium format of racing incorporates the Olympic and Commonwealth Games track cycling disciplines – Scratch, Individual Pursuit, Elimination, Time Trial, Flying 250m and Points race. Each rider races in each discipline, with the maximum points for a win in each race being 40 points, then 38 for second, then 36 for third. In addition, the Points race is calculated slightly differently, with points being scored every 2000m, adding to the excitement of the competition and keeping everyone on their toes until the very end. Saturday’s first day saw riders tackle the Scratch, Individual Pursuit (IP) and the Flying

250m. In the Elite Men’s race, David Maree (Team Telkom) currently leads after the three races with a total of 94 points, followed by teammates Reynard Butler (92) and Nolan Hoffman (88). Maree won the Scratch race, came second in the IP and 13th in the Flying 250m. The Elite Women’s race sees Charlene du Preez leading the way on 118 points, followed by Elfriede Wolfaardt and Maroesjka Matthee both on 110 points. Du Preez opened her tally with a second place in the Scratch race and first places in the IP and Flying 250m. As the sharp end of the sport exudes professionalism in their colourful team kit and topof-the-range equipment at the highest level of competition in the country, chasing points and championship titles, young riders from the townships watch and learn and aspire to become a big name in cycling with the correct training and guidance. While the Westbourne Oval has provided much cycling entertainment over the course of the week and has proved worthy of hosting a National Championship event, Port Elizabeth in fact boasts three cycling tracks within

10 kilometres of each other. Cycling South Africa’s Transformation and Development Commission Director, Yster Xatasi, said: “I believe track cycling is giving development riders opportunities to be involved in cycling and to become top riders. It’s nice for them to compete with the well-known riders here. That way, they are going to improve their cycling.” Xatasi has brought a team of four cyclists from the Siyanqoba Club in the New Brighton Township in the Eastern Cape with him. “The team I have brought is very excited to race. One of my riders in the under-16 category, Luthando Meintjies, is doing very well,” he added. Meintjies is 16-years-old and began cycling at the age of 13 when he was in grade seven. “Cycling in a good sport. It makes me not do the wrong things and I have made many, many friends in cycling. Cycling is my future. It makes me good,” Meintjies said. Xatasi mentioned that often many of the riders cycle from the township to train on the Westbourne Oval and then cycle back home late in the evening. “What’s crazy is that there is a track in that area for them to train at but it isn’t in great condition. There has been an unconfirmed amount of money to be allocated by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for the maintenance and repair of the track. There has also been an offer by the Municipality to assist in the repair of the bicycles that are owned by Siyanqoba. With the repair of the bicycles and the track, these young riders will have brilliant opportunities to practice right where they live,” Xatasi said. Cycling SA Track Commission Director and Race Director, Gerhard Meyer, has been in charge of training and selecting these riders so that they have the opportunity to compete in the competitive environment. “I select some of the riders from Siyanqoba and they come to the track for the Tuesday and Thursday training sessions and I

help them there. I’ve got about 15 development bikes that I work with. The riders come along and we train. I look at the talent that’s around and then I take them onto personal training and try to develop them from there,” Meyer said. President of Eastern Cape Sports Confederation, Mkhululi Magada, explained that their mandate is to assist and monitor Federations to ensure that Transformation and Development is driven in the province. “Development is important. We are busy with municipalities to develop all of the facilities that we have, formal and informal. We need to make sure that we utilise what that we have in the backyard in our communities. We don’t want youngsters to have to travel up to 12 kilometres before they can even participate. “We are committed to assist Federations with development in national and international participation. An academy is situated in NMMU with sports scientists and dieticians and once we have spotted a youngster with talent, we take them there so we can prepare them for the fouryear sporting cycle so that they are able to produce medals for us. “The way for the district, for the province and for the country to evaluate itself from the others is by the number of participants they can develop to gain medals. We want to make sure that we take these children at an early age and prepare them well so that they become a long-term investment for sport.”
