Awonke’s racing car dream comes true Little Awonke (6), who suffers from a lifethreaten ing condition, loves fast cars. He dreamt of driving in a fast car as well as having his own “racing” car to drive in at home. Racing champi on, Michael Stephen, a longstanding friend of the Reach for a Dream Foundation in Port Elizabeth and the team from Terry Moss Racing, made Awonke’s dream come to life at the Aldo Scriban te race track on June 30. When this spirited little boy saw the black Engen Extreme Audi, his face lit up. And it lit up even more when he saw another (little) racing car standing on the track. He could not believe that it was his when Michael announced that he will be “racing” in his own car against the Audi – albeit at a speed of 5km per hour. He “beat” the seasoned racing champs and was awarded a trophy and the number 1 spot on the podium. Pictured are Michael Stephen (left), little Awonke and Simon Moss. PHOTO: DONNA VAN DER WATT

HILE the embattled Bayworld complex has received the long-awaited news that parts of it will finally be run by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, after years of battling through red tape to achieve this, Friends of Bayworld are also rallying their efforts to keep it afloat.
The group, which is dedicated to supporting the facility, is hard at work planning another of their successful Night at the Museum events which will be held on July 23. According to Friends of Bayworld representative, Anelle Bailey, they started the
Night at the Museum campaign, of which the third edition will be held this year, with a Facebook event page. “We expected maybe 200 to 500 people to show up (for the first one). By 7pm, we had to close the doors as the buildings were filled to capacity. About 1 500 people attended,” she said. The first event was restricted to the Museum and Snake Park only and last year, they expanded it to include the entire Bayworld complex. More good news for the complex is the announcement on Friday that the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the municipality have signed a service level agreement for the upgrading of the
complex. MEC of the department, Pemmy Majodina, said the provincial legislature has approved that the recreation and oceanarium part of Bayworld be run by the municipality for project management and redevelopment purposes. This means that the project to redevelop Bayworld will be handled by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA). Pierre Voges, CEO of the MBDA, said the upgrade will cost about R300 million. “We do not have the money yet, but we will find it,” Voges said. According to Voges, Dorelle Sapere, who is the Planning and Development Manager at MBDA, will convene a group of experts to in-
vestigate whether Bayworld will be a tourist attraction or research and educational facility, or both of these.
Night at the Museum The Night at the Museum event was born out of the idea of creating a fun affordable event for the whole family. This year the event, in its third year, will include live entertainment from bands such as The Algoa Caledonian Pipe Band and The Zwartkops Conservancy: Enviro kids. Visitors are encouraged to dress up as historical figures and bring torches to explore Africa’s Lost World, the Snake Park and the Oceanarium. Continued on page 3

Eastern Cape first in electronic waste recycling REPORTER AN electronic waste recycling start-up, based in the Propella Business Incubator, aims to be one of the first companies on the continent to fully recycle electronic waste. Propella is a partnership between the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, the Industrial Development Corporation and the private sector and is focused on generating renewable energy. “Should we receive our required funding we will be the first electronic waste plant in Africa to have an end-to-end zero-to-landfill facility,” says Enrico Vermaak of eWaste Technologies Africa. “Electronic waste” is defined as “anything with a plug” being thrown away, such as discarded computers, office electronic equipment, entertainment device electronics, mobile phones, television sets and refrigerators. According to the minister of environmental

affairs, Edna Molewa, electronic waste makes up five to eight percent of municipal solid waste in South Africa and is growing at a rate three times faster than any other form of waste. eWaste Technologies Africa moved into the Propella advanced manufacturing hub in April 2016. “Being housed in Propella has given us the opportunity to have our warehouse, research and development facilities and office space all located in one building, which is a massive benefit to us,” he says. Seeing the gap in the market for what the minister identified as a lack of recycling infrastructure, eWaste Technologies Africa was set up to dispose of electronic waste. “We have secured Research and Development funding that has allowed us to procure entry-level electronic waste recycling equipment, and (we) are working with world leaders in the field of electronic waste recycling, as well as chemical engineering and process consultants, to establish a one-of-a-kind facility in

Parson’s Ridge crime drops by massive 80% REPORTER CRIME has dropped by an incredible 80 percent in just four months in Parson’s Ridge, one of PEs newest residential suburbs. That’s according to Jennifer Deyzel, chairperson of the Parson’s Ridge Patrols (PRP), a Neighbourhood Watch-based organisation formed earlier this year to combat housebreakings and thefts from vehicles in the area. A significant portion of its funding comes from an unusual source: Port Elizabeth development company, Cohen Property Developments, which built most of the homes in the suburb. Asked by the local community for his assistance in establishing a local Neighbourhood Watch to combat crime, Cohen Property Developments MD Aaron Cohen’s response was simply to ask what they needed, said Deyzel. “He then went ahead and provided us with signage, vests and caps, reflectors, torches and selfdefence equipment all vital to the success of the PRP, which has grown from 12 to 32 patrollers since its inception.” Cohen, along with his brother, fellow director Stanley Cohen, says their interest in an area lasts beyond the sales. “The company, which built the first home in Parson’s Ridge and still owns it, is committed to protecting their buyers’
long-term investments,” he says. Originally a farm, Parson’s Ridge has been divided into 400 residential stands, 200 of which were bought and developed by Cohen Property Developments. The community works with the Kabega Park Police Station to “keep the bad elements out and the good ones in,” says Deyzel. There’s no doubt that the Parson’s Ridge Neighbourhood Watch is working, agrees Warrant Officer Egmond Potgieter of Kabega Park SAPS. “Housebreaking and theft out of motor vehicles are always a problem but with the help of the PRP which reports anything suspicious to us immediately, crime in this area is under control. The Neighbourhood Watch members are our eyes and ears.” The PRP works closely with Sector Commander Constable Paul Disenyane, meeting regularly with him to discuss crime-related issues. “The commitment and positive attitude of the Parson’s Ridge NHW are the contributing factors to their success,” says W/O Potgieter. “Patrols with marked NHW clothes and signage help from a visibility point of view, but people in their homes can also play a big role in preventing crime, by checking their neighbours’ houses, knowing each other’s phone numbers, arranging with neighbours to check your house when you are away, and phoning your neighbours if you notice anything suspicious,” he
Jennifer Deyzel (left) chairperson of Parsons Ridge Patrols with Aaron Cohen, MD of Cohen Property Develop ments. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
adds. Deyzel says the PRP focuses on three key areas, namely visible patrolling, educating residents on security and safety, and reporting crimes or suspicious activities to the police. “We’re not a vigilante group but rather a group of community-oriented residents who give of our time and money to keep our area and our homes safe,” she explains. Formed with a legally binding constitution, the PRP is a non-profit organisation that holds
monthly meetings with members, patrollers and the local SAPS and sends out a quarterly newsletter to residents. As a result of the success of the PRP, Cohen says they have decided to sponsor Neighbourhood Watches in every suburb they develop in order to leave a lasting legacy for residents. These include Pinelands near Lorraine, where they’re currently building 140 units, Fairview 250 units, Mt Pleasant - 274 units and Kamma Heights -10 units.

use of sound, lighting and audio-visual equipment. The funds generated at the event will be used to purchase a fireproof cabinet for the Museum’s Otolith Collection, which comprises more than 19 000 ear bones collected from marine life. Any additional funds will go towards the
maintenance of the Snake Park and the Museum. Night at the Museum will take place on Saturday, July 23, from 5pm to 10pm. Entry is R25. Children under the age of three may enter free. Tickets are available at Bayworld and at the Kids Emporium in the Baywest Mall.

NMMU experts help Care Centre REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) has committed to supporting the Missionvale Care Centre by offering their different fields of expertise to create a sustainable future for the centre. The Centre was started from humble beginnings by Irish nun Sister Ethel Normoyle almost three decades ago, and now offers some 25 000 people in the community access to health, well-being and educational services. “Our University pledges its full cooperation and support in taking the Centre to the next level. We’d like to take the University on the hill (down) to the valley among the people,” NMMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Derrick Swartz shared at the strategic plan launch for the Centre last week. The University’s Missionvale Campus overlooks the Centre and the surrounding community, who live mostly in self-built homes that lack basic amenities. The Centre’s plan to create a sustainable community through capacity building includes efforts to harness new resources and forge partnerships with agencies, donors and specialists in the field of education, youth and community development, healthcare and entrepreneurship. NMMU has volunteered to be one of these partners and has offered its expertise – and energy – in the fields of education, agriculture, social development, health sciences and ICT in a formal Memorandum of Agreement (MoU).
Apart from sharing knowledge and expertise for at least the next five years, student learning and volunteerism have been included as part of the agreement. Students will be given opportunities to learn and develop skills as part of their curriculum. NMMU will, amongst others, offer business development support for the Crafters Centre; identify and implement micro enterprises in the community and offer advice on the Centre’s business processes and operations. NMMU will also seek to offer extra-curricular activities for the Centre’s primary school children and broader community through a variety of options including learning and homework support, teacher training and development. Support ranging from counselling and guidance for primary school children through to career guidance and training for Life Orientation teachers will also being offered. The range of support from the University’s Faculty of Health Sciences will include upskilling and training for community health practitioners, manpower support for clinic activities, needs determination and intervention opportunities in the broader Missionvale community; nutrition education and assessment. The Human Movement Science students will be able to offer coaching and physical activities and introduce their PasSPORT to Health project, and the Emergency Medical Care students, first aid training. The Agricultural students will be able to assist the MCC with their community food garden and other community food gardens in the area.

Concern over car hijackings
The police anti-hijacking taskteam was following up information on Friday morning after the umpteenth VW Polo car was hijacked in Kamesh, Uitenhage, last month. The grey Polo was hijacked on Thursday at 8pm. Sgt Majola Nkohli, a police spokesperson, said the owner of the car was ambushed by the hijackers in the driveway at a house and threatened with a gun. The police anti-hijacking task team discovered that the Polo was on its way to Port Elizabeth, Captain André Beetge, a police spokesperson, said. The car was spotted in Uitenhage Road near Algoa Park. The driver of the hijacked car tried to flee from police. “When police officers forced the hijacked car to a halt, the two occupants of the car jumped out and tried to flee. The passenger was shot in his right ankle,” said Beetge. The driver, a 31-year-old man and 26-year-old passenger were arrested on the scene. Although no firearm was found in their possession, the passenger had a knife in his possession. According to Beetge the possibility exists that the two alleged hijackers are part of a syndicate

that has hijacked VW Polos in Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage in the last few months. “The possibility is being considered, especially since they were caught with a hijacked VW Polo.” This model has been the target of hijackers the last few months. A reliable police source revealed that Polos are popular with hijackers because there are so many of these cars on the road and they can easily be sold. On Friday morning yet another Polo was hijacked. According to the source, it was the 200th car, out of mostly Polos, which was seized in the past two months. Allegedly, the 41-year-old driver of the Polo, a VW employee, left a Spar in Port Elizabeth and shortly before he could get the car into reverse, was stopped by two armed men. The driver of the car and his wife were forced out of the car and the suspects fled in the Polo. Meanwhile Beetge said police were concerned about the growing number of Polos being hijacked. For this exact reason, officials from all over the metro have gathered to form the metro’s anti-hijacking taskteam. “The task force focuses on cases of hijacking of cars and delivery vehicles, such as those that transport food and cigarettes.” Although Beetge may not mention statistics, he said that the hijacking of bread delivery vehicles, especially in the Motherwell area, had already diminished after the task force was appointed about a month ago. Scotts hit the road again REPORTER WHAT do an advocate, a music teacher, bagpipes, the UK and walking shoes have in common? That’s an easy question for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) to answer - Beverley and Patrick Scott. On July 3, they set out on the South Downs Way, a long distance footpath in Southern England, leaving Winchester and arriving in Eastbourne on July 11, having covered 160km. They combine their love of walking with raising funds for the Animal Antic-Cruelty League Spayathon fund. This will be their 6th walk for the cause and to date they have already walked 1 181 km. When they complete the South Downs Way, they will have covered 1 341 km in total – which is more than the 1 272 km from Durban to Cape Town. Their trips include daily updates on their Facebook page, Walking for Paws and Claws, some light-hearted banter, and the increasingly popular Pub Challenge, which accounts for the bulk of the donations. Beverly and Patrick sponsor R10 to the cause at every pub they visit along the way and challenge any willing participants to do the same. According to Linda-Louise Swain of the AACL, their walks generally raise anything between R12 000 and R25 000 and have been responsible for hundreds of sterilisations ending the abuse and neglect of over-breeding for so many animals. Some of their trips get more interesting than others. “Their trip down the Dales Way, a long distance footpath in Northern England, in 2013 saw them lost on the moors when the rolling mist came in. “Last year the Thames Path had Beverley ending up in a ditch with an injured ankle,

after a passing cyclist sent her sprawling on the narrow path,” said Linda-Louise. However, many friends and brief acquaintances are made along the way and they are doing what they love for a cause that is close to their heart. Their walks coincide with visits to their children in London. Their son, William, passed away in February and this walk will be done in his memory. According to Linda-Louise, Beverley and Patrick cover all their own costs and every cent made goes directly into the AACL outreach account. “We ask the public to please get involved, join or “Like” the Walking for Paws and Claws Facebook page and become part of making a difference. The cost of a sterilisation at one of our Spayathons is R250. Any donations are greatly appreciated and the Pub Challenge is a really fun way of joining in on their daily escapades,” said Linda-Louise.

WIN! WIN! WIN! Craft ups the ante for taste adventurers THE Boardwalk’s gourmet burger and ribs restaurant, Craft, has upped the ante for taste adventurers with some exciting new twists to its just refreshed menu. “As if the bold and extensive choice of hunger-busting, taste-bud-titillating gourmet burgers, salads and desserts couldn’t get any better, our culinary team has pulled a few more surprises out of the hat,” said Boardwalk’s Marketing Manager, Nqobile Majozi. On the burger front, there are two new must-tries; the Black and White-blackened Fish (panga) burger decked with corn and red pepper relish and guacamole and served with crispy sweet potato, and the Dirty Pig, a mouth-watering pulled pork, slaw and rib sauce stack. New to the cast of outrageous salads there is the Kitchen Sink, burgeoning with mixed
leaves, tomato, cucumber, feta, olives, cheddar cheese, blue cheese, shredded ham, pulled chicken, biltong, chopped egg, roasted red pepper and ranch dressing. For those not shy of tucking into hearty carbs there is the Craft Couch Potato, a delicious concoction of steamed potatoes, gherkins, chopped egg, crispy bacon, biltong, ham, chives and mayo. For dessert, sweet lovers have some exciting variations of the doughnut to tuck into. These include amongst others the King of Rock and Roll, a sugar-dusted doughnut, with peanut butter and banana ice cream, and jack Daniels glazed pecan nuts and the Chuck Berry, a sugar-dusted doughnut, with blue berry and vanilla ice cream, topped with old fashioned frosting and smarties. Craft’s beef burgers are handmade on site from 100% pure ground beef, weighing in at
a healthy 170g each. There is also an extensive selection of gourmet ribs and no fewer than ten enticing variations of chicken wings. Craft serves a range of craft beers, local beers, wine and hot drinks, as well as decadent signature milkshakes. Craft is open from 6pm on week nights and from noon until late on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For bookings and enquiries contact 041 504 7509. Win! Win! Win! Signtific is the solution for your printing and signage needs SIGNTIFIC was founded in the late 90’s by Dewald Niemandt who is still the sole owner of the business.
Due to their good track record they are used by many major national signage companies to represent them in the Eastern Cape.
Since then the business has grown into a signage and printing concern, which is rated as one of the bigger signage companies in Port Elizabeth. From a meagre staff complement of two, Signtific today employs 15 people on a full time basis. Some of these employees have service records of 15 years and more with the company.
They offer various types of printing and signage solutions such as: . Vehicle signage, including full wraps and magnetic signs . Block mounts and prints on artist’s canvas. . They do printing on paper, vinyl, PVC and Contravision. . All types of symbolic safety
signs for factories and major manufacturers . Printing of banners, flags and pull-ups for educational institutions . Printing on artist’s canvas. . Clear vinyl over-lam for full colour digital prints They have a very experienced rigging team that are trained in all Health and Safety procedures. Visit them at 33 Strang Street, Sidwell or call 041 453 6127. ) Signtific printed and applied the vinyl stickers in the office make-over.
“We initially started as a kids’ emporium and as the business grew along with our children, we decided to branch out into more residential and commercial interiors. We offer a full design service, as well as an interior and installation service,” said owner Kelly Niemandt. Their work includes all soft furnishings, custom design furniture, re-upholstery of furniture, custom curtains, blinds and linens, as well as a full interior décor service. They also have an amazing selection of local and imported wallpapers. Phone 041 367 2094 between 9am and 1pm (studio hours) to make an appointment to see either Kelly or Michelle. Indoors or Out – Prominent Paints has a premium solution WHILE interior and exterior paints have many of the same properties, they also have some differences. For best results, it’s important to choose the correct paint for the intended purpose. A quality interior paint will have a low VOC level, which reduces odour when painting indoors. Where paint for the interior needs to be hard-wearing and washable, exterior paints must withstand damaging UV rays and be flexible to bridge cracks, be fungal resistant and have low dirt retention. It’s equally important to choose a superior quality of paint; it makes painting easier and ensures a long-lasting result. The Prominent Paints Premium range has a lifespan of up to 12 years when properly applied. The paints are tough, durable, washable, UV-resistant and they can be tinted to any colour of your choice; this range ticks all the right boxes when it comes to quality. But even the best paint won’t perform if the basic principles of painting are not followed: Pay attention to surface preparation ) Follow the back of pack requirements for the substrate before applying paint.
) Always sand and prepare surfaces properly before painting – it could be the difference between success and a DIY disaster. ) Choosing the correct primer for the substrate is equally important: a universal undercoat does not perform well on newly plastered walls, but is good for primed steel as an intermediate coat. Prominent Select Plaster Primer is an alkali-resistant, solvent-based primer for cement plaster, rhinolite surfaces, gypsum plaster and board. ) Walls must also be clean and dry before painting begins. Choose the right finish for your room With the number of finishes available today, the choice can be as difficult as choosing a colour but for a strong finish you need the right finish. A good rule of thumb is to first consider the area being painted. Matt paints provide a smooth, yet stylish finish, hiding blemishes on the wall surface. Both Premium Eggshell and Premium NonDrip Enamel are easy to clean and have good stain resistance, while high-gloss paint has a very shiny finish. High traffic areas need a durable paint that resists stains and marring and can
be scrubbed clean. Semi-gloss paints are suitable for areas with high condensation like kitchens and bathrooms or children’s playrooms where additional cleaning will likely be required. For info see www.prominentpaints.co.za or call the customer care line on 0861 77 66 46. ) Prominent Paints supplied the paint for the office walls. To see before and after photos of the make-over, go to the PE Express Facebook page and click on photos.

STOP CRYING, STOP WORRYING BECAUSE WITH MAMA SAMANTHA ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE
My name is Sanirisiwe 30 yrs old, testifing about the miracles that MAMASAMANTHAperformed in my life. I am one of the people who lost a lot of money to the so called doc-tors but when I read the testimony Larry wrote about MAMA SAMANTHA. I decided to try again called MAMA SAMANTHA and she told me all be fine with me if only I believe in her. My life was a mess, I had a lot of debts, working for 5years with no money that time my boyfriend had left me she used a crystal ball eye and gave me a magic ring which helped me. My boyfriend came back and now I am financially stable, my court cases were dismissed and I live happily now. CAN PAY AFTER JOB IS DONE Cell 063 800 8531

A SPECIAL PRAYER OF SUCCESS Before I met this powerful spiritual LADY AMELIA happiness was rare in my family. My life was filled with cheating, sick kids and bad luck. I tried many healers and remedies but all failed. I saw a testimony on local TV about and old couple, LADY AMELIA had united. I paid R200 consultation. She accurately read my fortune and told me my problems and showed me my enemies in water.
She performed a one day special prayer for me. She cleansed me, united me with my husband, gave me a special ring for luck and love crystals. Today I have a big business and my son enjoys a promotion. Thanks LADY AMELIA for fixing my marriage, luck, protecting me from my enemies, health and solving sexual problems. She saved my son from drugs and alcohol. Call LADY AMELIA 076 101 6134 X1RHEFQ5-PX150616

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
It’s okay to stare at the Ford Mustang
Exterior It’s a design unlike any other. It has a sleek and low body and a rather bulky and long hood. At the rear the unique design is accentuated by
the signature tri-bar taillights. And the front is so bulky, and visibility so difficult, that I did not dare take it on the narrow course of my favourite take-away’s drive-thru. We had to park it and go and order inside – a small inconvenience for the fun that this car is to drive. Then there is the Mustang emblem on the front that leaves you in no doubt as to what car this is. Sometimes it is the little things that stay with you the longest when test driving a car. With the Mustang it was the shadow of a Mustang screened on the pavement when you open the doors at night. That was probably the feature I showed most people. When you open the door at night, a light from the side mirrors creates the figure of the horse on the road or pavement underneath the open door – something that has to be seen to be believed. Interior The design on the inside was inspired by classic airplane cockpits with a balance between analog dials and digital feedback. There is plenty of space in the front, but in the back one would only be able to fit in small children or people eager enough to have a ride in this car no matter how uncomfortable and tight the seating in the back – such as many of my colleagues at work – who were treated to rides in the Mustang. I have never had so many requests from colleagues to experience a test car. In contrast to the backseat, the boot space is actually quite impressive. The front seats are very comfortable and can be moved forward and backward electrically. The Mustang also boasts the best in infotainment technology with Ford’s Sync 2 with high resolution 8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth and voice control (with which you can even control the temperature). There are multiple connectivity options delivered via Bluetooth, USB and SD card ports. The touch-screen also shows what the Mustang’s rearview camera sees – for up to 10 metres behind you. Other convenience features are keyless entry and push-button start. To start her up, just put your foot on the brake, press the START/

Express editor and motoring columnist Bettie Giliomee with the Ford Mustang that she spent three thrilling days with. PHOTO: ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL STOP button and you’re away (as long as the key is in close proximity). The Key has MyKey technology which means that the key can be programmed to restricted driving modes that promote good habits, such as limiting vehicle top speed and decreasing audio volume. Engine It is difficult to describe the thrill of starting the engine and hearing that Mustang’s growl – even if it isn’t the V8 version that was test driven. The test model was equipped with the all-new twin-scroll turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 engine. In South Africa the Mustang is also available with a 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine. According to Ford’s literature, the Mustang GT’s 5.0L engine has been expertly engineered to maximize power from every compression, while the turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost engine gives one exhilarating performance with reduced fuel consumption. Electric Power Assisted Steering adjusts to provide one with greater control in a range of road and weather conditions, and even crosswinds and potholes. And it activates when need-
ed, saving fuel. One can choose between three power-assisted steering settings, namely comfort, sport and normal. Mustang’s SelectShift gives one the choice of driving it manually with Paddle Shifters on the steering wheel to shift gears up or down without having to use a clutch. Using the Selectable Drive Modes, drivers are able to adjust the AdvanceTrac electronic stability control, throttle response, automatic gearshift patterns and steering to match Normal, Sport+, Track or Snow/Wet settings. While the Mustang V8 is thirsty as far as its fuel consumption figures goes, the 2.3 EcoBoost engine is much more fuel efficient with consumption stated at 8.0 l/100km in the combined cycle, linked to 179 g/km CO2 emissions.

It’s okay to stare…so it says on Ford’s website underneath a photo of the new Mustang. And if there is anything that would always stay with me about test driving the Mustang for 3 days, it was THE STARES. Stares which much more expensive cars have never elicited while I was test driving them. Until driving the Mustang, or should I say riding, I did not realize how many car enthusiasts there are – no matter what the demographic – who stared at the Mustang. From moms at school giving me the thumbs up, to paramedics driving past in an ambulance applauding, to hawkers staring so much that they forgot to try to sell me anything. Then there were the comments: “Hey Lady, is that car not too powerful for you?” Or “It isn’t the V8?? – that’s a sacrilege!!” And there is sure to be plenty of stares going around with a whopping 114 Ford Mustangs being delivered to customers in South Africa in April alone – and a long list waiting for their delivery of this iconic car. The demand has been so overwhelming that as of November last year – a month before officially launching here – it was sold out through 2017. And this with a price ranging from R699 900 to R899 900. In South Africa there is a six-model line-up with 2.3 EcoBoost or 5.0 V8 engines, manual or automatic transmissions, as well as Fastback and Convertible body styles. Ford says that with the new Mustang, which is for the first time ever available in right-hand drive, they did not reinvent the iconic car, just made it better and – 50 years on – have breathed new life into a legend.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Hamilton, Lord Of The Ring OVER the course of a Grand Prix weekend a driver normally runs close to two hundred laps. It’s uncanny then that everything can be made or undone by one lap. On Saturday qualifying, a wet and dry session, Lewis Hamilton steered his Mercedes to pole position in dominant fashion. While teammate Nico Rosberg qualified second on the road he moved down the grid due to a gearbox penalty. It promoted Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg to the second front-row starting position of his career. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, also hit with a gearbox penalty and fell down the starting grid, which promoted McLaren’s Jenson Button to third place. As Hamilton led cleanly from pole position it didn’t take too long for Hulkenberg and Button to fall by the wayside. Ferrari driver Kimi Raik-
konen, now in second, kept Hamilton relatively honest with a gap of 3.5 to 4 seconds in the first stint. A recovering Sebastian Vettel was soon running third behind teammate Raikkonen. Ferrari’s advantage rested on the fact that, as Hamilton’s closest rival, Raikkonen started the race on the supersoft tyre, which, theoretically, should last longer than Hamilton’s ultrasoft tyres. However, for a reason unbeknownst to most, Ferrari called Raikkonen in only one lap after Hamilton’s own visit to the pitlane. It dropped the Finn to sixth behind both Red Bull drivers. Ferrari’s strategists, not for the first time this season, had made the wrong call. As Hamilton and Raikkonen dived into the pitlane it left Vettel in the lead of the race. However, as the German driver started lap 27 he suffered a violent delamination to the right-rear super-

mained fourth overall. As it were, Rosberg’s brake-by-wire system went into passive mode on the pit-strait. However, it’s clear from on-board footage that he was trying to run Hamilton wide. Behind race-leader Hamilton, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen narrowly held onto second after running a 56-lap stint on the soft tyre. Kimi Raikkonen recovered Ferrari’s dubious strategy call to finish third as Rosberg limped home in fourth. Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth ahead of one of the stars of the race Jenson Button. The Brit outperformed his McLaren to finish in sixth ahead of Romain Grosjean (7th), Carlos Sainz (8th), and Valtteri Bottas (9th). The other star of the afternoon was Manor F1’s Pascal Wehrlein who scored his first career point in tenth. There is no rest for the sport that never sleeps as the F1 paddock heads straight to the Silverstone circuit for this weekend’s British GP.

Enter for train race
Re-introduced in 2014 in a new format between PE and Uitenhage, this year’s Train Race is expecting to attract over 250 teams comprising 5 runners and 1 mountain bike cyclist to take on a Metrorail train over a distance of 38km. This year sees the addition of an individual category to the event which already caters for Company, School, Social and Club Teams. The route is divided into 6 stages with the race starting from the historic PE railway station. Entry fees for the Train Race are R700 for a corporate team, R600 for a Social Team, R500 for club teams, R400 for school teams and R200 per individual. Spectator train tickets are R60 each. soft tyre. It speared the Ferrari into the pitwall and out of the race. Ferrari do not believe that they pushed the tyres beyond their limits and Vettel’s laptimes before the incident would suggest that the set of tyres were well within working range. After a short safety-car stint to clear up Vettel’s tyre debris, Rosberg resumed the lead of the race on lap 32 with Hamilton in second. After both Merc drivers made their second stops Nico Rosberg was delivering a drive at the Austrian Grand Prix worth remembering. He fought his way through to the lead of the race with consistent speed and superior strategy. But Hamilton wasn’t giving up and closed the gap to four-tenths of a second on lap 67. Rosberg seemed unflustered right until the final lap of the race. The German driver made a mistake into Turn 1 handing Hamilton the advantage. Hamilton had a run on the lead into Turn 2 as Rosberg let his car run wide and made contact with Hamilton. Rosberg got off worst in the exchange as he limped home in fourth with a damaged car. The stewards imposed a 10-second penalty on Rosberg for causing a collision but he re-

Perfect conditions for 2nd round of Winter Series MICHAEL ZOETMULDER THE second round of the Endurade Winter Series was held at Pollok Beach on Sunday morning in near perfect winter conditions. The 7 events on offer all started at 10am with the Kids’ 1.25km fun run completing first and being won by Jayson Archibald ahead of Joshua Marais and Kayliegh Marais with Tatum Lowe in 4th place. The 750m Ocean Swim saw Aidan Baker winning from Rolf Kickhofel and Lea Steyn whilst the 5km Fun Run was won by Tristan Marais and Liezel Wait with Ryder Swans and James Maclear taking 2nd and 3rd on the male category behind Marais with Tracy Maclear finishing just behind Wait in the ladies’ category. In the fun Duathlon events, Reghardt Klinkenburg won the Kids’ Duathlon from Josh Hufkie whilst Dewald Klinkenburg and Micha Swans won the miniduathlon. In the sprint distance Duathlon, Ross Helliwell took his second win of the Series ahead of Alex Blumberg and William Wilson. Jade Hooke won the ladies’ division from Neylese Donaldson and Lindsay Steele. The competition was tight once again in the Sprint distance Triathlon event with Johannes Moldan pulling off a win in 1hr 1 minute despite a nasty fall at the start of the bike leg after hitting a pot hole. Round 1 winner Travis Mcgrath finished in second place with Mauritz Erasmus in third. Antonelle Saporta stormed to a win in the ladies’ division in 1hr 14min ahead of Robyn Furstenburg and Kimberley Vorster. The next Endurade Winter Series will be taking place on Sunday 7th August with entries and full results available on www.zsports.co.za/WinterSeries.
Local boy to race Motocross in Kenya ANIKA DE BEER KYLE Townsend, a grade 3 learner from Grey Junior School, has been chosen to race in the 2016 FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations in Nairobi in August. Kyle started racing MX bikes last year in the 50cc class for the Rover Motorcycle Club. In 2015, he was placed first in the 50cc class in the club and was named Junior Rider of the Year. Towards the end of this year, Kyle will upgrade to the 65cc class. Currently, Kyle is in third position in the 50cc class of the World of Motorsport SA (WOMZA) series, fifth in the Motorsport SA (MSA) series and first in the Rover Motorcycle Club series. “His dedication and devotion to succeeding in what he loves doing, is admirable,” said his father, Neville. Kyle has received no coaching in MX biking apart from that of his parents and has a true love for the sport. “He truly loves Motocross; he breathes MX from when he wakes up through to bed time— it’s just MX. If he is up early, rest assured he will be watching YouTube videos of the USA Pro’s and trying to learn new techniques,” said Neville. The top five riders in every class have been invited to compete in the 2016 FIM Africa Moto-

cross of African Nations. “This is a prestigious invite and not many kids get this opportunity. It’s obviously every kid’s dream to race in the big league and to race for their country is even bigger.” The event is set to take place from August 19 to 21 and it is the rider’s responsibility to get there and back. Close friends and family are scrambling to raise the funds to get Kyle to Kenya for the competition and they are seeking help from the community. They need to raise at least R60 000 to make it work. They are hosting a fundraiser called K2K (Kyle 2 Kenya) and hope to raise the necessary funds through a combination of sponsorships, individual donations and raffles. Among the many prizes that have been donated is a helmet signed by Supercross rider, Michael Kok, a night at the Radisson Blu Hotel worth R2 000, and an iPhone 5s sponsored by the Vodacom store in the Baywest Mall. A weekend at Africanos Country Estate in Addo is also up for grabs. AutoMotorcycles PE arranged a Funduro day at the Rover MX Club on July 23 to help raise funds where the prizes will be raffled. A Music Trivia evening will also be held on July 8. For more info, go to www.ktmx.co.za or contact Neville on 082 990 2547.
