Fairview Hospital, which would have opened its doors in 2017, will now open in 2018 due to technical delays.

Fairview Hospital delayed ALVENÉ APPOLLIS

A

storeroom for a generator is so far the only sign of a proposed private hospital in Fairview that was planned to be opened next year.

Residents will have to wait at least two years before they have a hospital. Fairview Hospital, which will be erected on the corner of Circular Drive and Willow Road, is expected to open its doors in 2018. It is being built by the private group Origin Health. According to Tanya Venter, spokesperson for Origin Health, the construction is delayed due to technical problems. A storeroom for a generator is the only completed structure in the area of 56 000 square metres.

“The first sod has been turned and the building is now underway,” said Venter. “The infrastructure for the construction of a new hospital has been implemented and Circular Drive has been upgraded according to municipal conditions.” Fairview is expected to be a day hospital that delivers a wide range of health services in a private practice. “The hospital will have six operating theatres, medical wards, an intensive care unit, high care unit, maternity unit, neonatal unit, pediatric unit and an accident and emergency unit,” said Venter. “This part of Port Elizabeth has grown considerably, which has resulted in the need for a new hospital. Origin Health is also building a new hospital in Jeffrey’s Bay, which will open its doors in November 2017.”

“Werwing is egter ’n regverdige

My husband left me and went to London with another woman for 5 years! I tried to bring him back, I visited priests and healers for help but failed. Ligan and Miss Jessica looked through the mirror and assured me that he’ll call within 4 days, and I’ll pick him at the airport. He really phoned and he’s return after 5 years! He accurately read my fortune (for R200 conMaria and Jacob sultation fee) & told me all my problems without (happily in love again) me mentioning a word. He even used a mirror to show me real-faces of people who were trying to pull me down. Ligan and Miss Jessica performed special-prayers for me, cleansed me from badluck & also gave me powerful lovecrystals plus a special-ring to fix my financial problems. Four (4) days after prayers my husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I am very happy, we recently reconciled! Like me, all clients I have been referring to him always got GUARANTEED RESULTS in a few days.

Chief Mandla Mandela said it was a privilege and an honour for him to be involved in something that was dear to “the man I called my grandfather, who spent 67 years of his life making the world a better place for all.” To mayor Jordaan, the challenge was the start of a commitment to doing good for the less fortunate in honour of Madiba. Eastern Cape-born South African celebrity Chef Sibahle Mtongana, popularly known as Siba Mtongana, the host of the Food Network show Siba’s Table, relayed how important it was for her to be part of the initiative to feed the hungry.

Twenty-six undergraduate and postgraduate students from across the university’s seven faculties were recognised for their achievements, but also encouraged to look to the needs of the world. “What contribution will you make to broader society, shaping ideas towards a better life for all?” NMMU Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Sibongile Muthwa asked the recipients in her welcoming address at the Feather Market Centre. She added that the recipients needed more than their academic achievements. “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead,” said Dr Muthwa, quoting the university’s namesake, Nelson Mandela. Among those who have already responded to that call is Science masters graduate Ather-

Another recipient committed to ploughing back is Tarryn Lovemore, a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar having obtained 7 A’s in matric, who completed her BEd Intermediate Phase teaching degree cum laude and is presently teaching in Nanaga in the Eastern Cape where she grew up. Lovemore, the top graduate in the Faculty of Education, is also one of four recipients of the University’s top award – the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Academic Excellence. The Collegiate matriculant was the best first degree graduate. Two other Collegiate matriculants, Nicole Lake and Emma Plumstead, also won the award for being the best diplomate (Biomedical Technology) and best postgraduate student in the field of Science, Engineering and Technology (BSc Honours: Mathematical Statistics) respectively. The fourth recipient is Dorothea Buckle as the best postgraduate student in the social sciences who combined her passions of media and the environment to produce an “outstanding” trans-disciplinary arts and science masters dissertation. Dorothea attended DF Malherbe and is presently working in Cape Town.

July is Psychosocial Disability Awareness month EVERY July is commemorated as Psychosocial Disability Awareness month and this year, together with the South African Federation for Mental Health, Port Elizabeth Mental Health is focused on raising awareness around the issue of stock outs of psychiatric medication, and the negative effects this has on mental health care users. For many people living with mental disorders or disabilities, access to psychiatric medication is essential for their recovery and enables them to live fully productive lives and function as active members of their community. When service users want to access medication and remain treatment compliant, but are unable to do so due to medication stock outs at clinics, it becomes a human rights issue that cannot be ignored. For many service users, having the required access to psychiatric medication is essential to their recovery and to the ongoing management of their conditions. The availability of psychiatric medication is therefore crucial. Being unable to receive the correct, prescribed medication at clinics, leaves patients in a situation which can result in a deterioration in mental health functioning, and worst case scenario, relapse. This can have a number of negative and long lasting consequences, such as readmission to inpatient facilities, loss of employment, a breakdown in family or other relationships, poorer quality of life and social isolation. It may have taken months or even years to reach a point where the individual is stable and able to have a full and functional life, and a relapse negates all the hard work that went into their recovery process. Robynn Patmore is a mental health service user living with Bipolar Disorder. She has been unable to receive the correct medication due to stock outs, and this has led to relapse and hospitalization. “The clinic I always received my medication from ran out of Convalex, which is a very good mood stabiliser for me. And then suddenly the clinic ran out of the Convalex, and the nurses just said they didn’t know when it would come back in stock. The psychiatrist put me on Lamaxil instead, and it made me so sick that I actually relapsed and spent four months in hospital.” The National Mental Health Policy Framework stipulates that all psychiatric medication must be available at all levels of care. This however does not reflect the reality as stock outs of psychiatric medication is a problem that many mental health service users face on a regular basis. Members of the public are encouraged to report any medication stock outs to The Stop Stock Outs Campaign, as well as The Mental Health Watch Reporting System. Junior chef cooks up a storm REPORTER AFTER missing the entry deadline last year, young Jessica Brown made up for lost time when she won the SPAR Junior Chef competition at the Pastryworks in Fernglen, Port Elizabeth, last week. In a display of her culinary talents, the 12year-old from St Francis Bay made the most of her opportunity this time to edge out three other finalists for the prestigious title. For her efforts, Jessica, who attends Woodridge Prep, received a tablet and a voucher of R2 500, which she said she would save for a stand mixer. As part of her entry recipe Jessica conjured up a tasty dish of tuna fishcakes and home-made tartar sauce. The finalists were then required to show their initiative and coolness under pressure when they were given a mystery dish to produce. This was a recipe for chocolate marshmallow mousse and the children were given some creative leeway in how they presented the final product. They were judged on both their entry recipe and their creation of the mystery dish. Jessica said the most difficult part of the competition had been whisking the cream for the mystery dish, but she also had a lot of fun.

“The most fun for me is always decorating the plate and getting all the ingredients together,” she said. The other contestants were Ronan van der Vaart (10) from Greenwood Primary, Michaela Bouwer from Sunridge Primary (13), and Rouche Fourie (11) from Handhaaf Primary. Now in its fourth year, the SPAR Junior Chef competition has shown remarkable growth, ensuring that the retailer’s objective of providing something fun for budding chefs has been achieved. “The aim is to try to get youngsters to enjoy cooking and to experience life in the kitchen,” said SPAR Eastern Cape promotions and advertising manager Wendy Westraadt. Jessica, who admitted to being extremely nervous before the contest, said she was ecstatic to have won.“I heard about it last year and wanted to do it, but I was too late to enter, so I have been waiting the whole year. Although nervous, I was also excited.” Constant growth in the entry numbers over the years has convinced SPAR they are on the right track. “We believe it’s a great chance for children to use a bit of creativity and to do something that’s fun, while also learning about nutrition and what’s healthy for your body,”said Westraadt

EC Clivia Club Interspecific show

The Clivia, known as the interspecific, is a cross between a Miniata and any of the following species: Nobilis, Gardenii, Robusta, Caulescense or Mirabilis. This hybridization has led to a plant that can flower at any time of the year, but generally seems to prefer mid-winter. The hybrids are generally larger than the parents and have flaring flowers in all colours. Everyone who would like to see these fascinating species or would like to own one is welcome at the show. The show will be followed by an open meeting and everyone is welcome to join the club and get involved with these captivating plants.

Win a step into the world of radio with Roland Gaspar REPORTER CONNECTING with the magic of broadcasting is as easy as switching on your radio, but it’s not as easy to get a real look into the industry from behind the scenes. For many people who have an interest in developing a hobby or career in the field it’s difficult to know where to start, or how to develop the skills needed to get into this competitive industry. Many people have an interest in radio but limited access to information and training that will help them begin their journey. This is what inspired actor, comedian and 21-year veteran of radio broadcasting, Roland Gaspar, to put together a course that would inspire and inform people about the mechanics of working in radio. “My own journey into radio began with a training course at Solid Gold FM in Randburg where we were trained by Tony Sanderson who hosted the popular Radio 5 (as it was known then) programme ‘The Chuckle and Chat Show’

with David Blood. As a result of the skills and knowledge I picked up there I got the opportunity to work with Afrikaans broadcasting legend Fanus Rautenbach at Radio East Rand. My career expanded from there and I have worked with 5 different stations since then,” said Gaspar. He added that radio does not have a structured career development path and that on air positions had no formal tertiary requirement. “Many of the top presenters who have become household names have no radio related qualifications at all. However, the basic skills like microphone technique, voice skills and conversational creativity are a necessity. “In my days as Programme Manager at KingfisherFM I received so many applications from people with a great passion for radio who were clearly lacking in the skills they needed to even begin the journey,” Gaspar explained. “They had no idea which area they wanted to work in. They had no voice demo or recording for us to listen to. All they had was a love for the medium and a dream. While this is admirable, it is not

Roland Gaspar.

enough.” Gaspar established the Media Academy of PE, or M.A.P. Gaspar says the name is an indication of the nature of courses which will be provided, “We chose the acronym MAP because the courses are designed to guide people in the practical steps they need to take to pursue their dreams in media.” The first course will commence shortly and will run for 6 consecutive nights with sessions

lasting 2 hours each. During these sessions learners will get an introduction to the world of radio from a seasoned professional and learn where they could potentially use their talents within the elements of the radio presenting and production spheres. At the end of the course, the demo content they create will be evaluated and if it meets the required quality criteria, will be broadcast on air on community radio in PE. The course will be presented at The Venue, 1 Prospect Road, Walmer. Cost for the course is R5000. For more info or bookings send an email to office@rolandg.co.za or phone/text 079 883 5837. Win! Win! Win! The PE Express is giving one reader the chance to win a full attendance to the course to the value of R5 000. (*Prize does not include transport to and from the venue.) To enter, send an email with your contact details to express.web@media24.com. Include “Radio” in the subject line.

Fogarty’s to host book and wine pairing REPORTER THERESA Fogarty of PE’s specialist bookstore Fogarty’s and Wine Extra Magazine Editor, Maryna Strachan, who is also from The TOPS at SPAR Wine Show, are presenting a tasty treat for local book lovers and wine enthusiasts on July 28. Given that Book Club is really just another name for Wine Club, the ladies have paired Fogarty’s Top 10 books with complementary labels and varieties – making choosing wines for your next “book club” a cinch.

Some of the Top 10 pairings that Fogarty and Strachan will present are Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner and Spier’s Creative Block 2; Sally Andrew’s Recipes for Love and Murder and JC Le Roux’s flagship MCC Scintilla; and Jo Jo Moyes’ The Girl You Left Behind and D’Aria’s Sauvignon Blanc. Guests can enjoy a 45-minute tutored tasting of each novel and its most complementary wine, followed by browsing and mingling with fellow book and wine lovers. Strachan will also explain why a spicy Shiraz pairs best with a sexy thriller while a fine fizz elevates ladies’ literature, among

other popular book and wine partners. The event will begin at 6pm until 8pm at Fogarty’s Book Store in the Walmer Park Shopping Centre. While entrance is free, reservation is essential as seats are limited. RSVP at Shaldene@cultivatecoms.co.za by Monday, July 25 at the latest.

A combination of books and wine is on offer to fans at Fogarty’s Book Store.

Tschops Sipuka a humble legend on and off the track NCEBA DLADLA DESPITE carrying the accolade of being the first black South African Motorsport Champion who represented his country at the international championships, Tschops Sipuka remains a humble soul who believes that only the hand of God drives him to achieve greatness in life. A successful businessman and married father of two girls, Sipuka has met and conversed with the great and grandest, like Nelson Mandela. He has also learnt hard lessons which formulate a curriculum of knowledge, ethics and values which he draws from in life. It is, however, in the Bible that as a firm believer and motivational speaker Sipuka finds much wisdom, he said. Born and bred in Qumbu in the Transkei, Batshobonke Sipuka, aka Tschops, has achieved legendary status in the traditionally White sport. He made history by becoming the first racer to lead a national status championship; the first man of colour to drive the Super-truck; has competed in the 25-hour cup race at Spa Franchorchamps in Belgium and came third; participated in the Proton Satria Cup Race at the Sepeng F1 Circuit in Malaysia and has achieved 12 pole positions and 14 podium finishes out of 20 races, which was a first for the Engen record book. These are just a few of the highlights in a racing career that spanned seven years, from 1998 to 2005. “I fell in love with motor racing growing up in the early 1980s – when it was the in-thing in Europe. In 1998 I got involved in it by chance when a relative, who worked at BP, met my idol Terry Moss who facilitated my internship at Volkswagen SA – where I did VW Motorsport,” said Sipuka. “I loved driving and I did well at racing. But, it is Terry who was instrumental in my whole racing career,” he said, adding that he went

Tschops Sipuka in action in the Bridgestone Production car at the East London Grand Prix Circuit. straight to saloon motor racing and never raced in a go-kart, which many racers start off with. Outside of South Africa, Sipuka always wanted to do the best he could and that was noted by Madiba whom he met at Qunu. “Growing up in the rural village of Qumbu, with no street lights, all I had to look out for

when driving were young chicks, goats and pigs. My capital city was Mthatha. But, I competed against the best in the world. So, I say, impossible is nothing! “I wouldn’t like my daughters to take up the sport, but to concentrate on education and rather do the sport that they loved and not to follow in my footsteps for fear of disappointment.

Gardener gets boss to aim high Dokter wil jong pasiënte help met skildery REPORTER

CLIVE Taverner, a 64-year-old Port Elizabethan, has been selected to represent South Africa at the Clay Target World Championships in Ireland from July 21.

While he has represented the country on three previous occasions, Taverner credits his selection this year in the face of strong competition to “teamwork” from an unlikely source: his gardener, Bartholomew Edward. “While I have been retired for 18 months now, I have increased my practice sessions, but this requires someone to accompany me to the range and to operate the target release system. That someone has been Bartholomew,’’ said Taverner. “Not only does he attend all my practices and operates the equipment but he plays a motivational role...urging me to consider every practice shot as a shot in the world championships final.’’ “There is no doubt that my shooting and mental approach have benefitted from his loyalty and positivity,’’ he said. Bartholomew (34), who is originally from Malawi, has been working for the Taverners for two years and says he is personally invested in his employer’s success. “I like to be a help to him and have an important job to play in his training and really hope he shows the world what he can do - because we have put a lot of hard work into the preparations,’’ he said. “I know that a person can only do in competition what that person has

done in practice, so I always remind Clive to think of every practice as a final, where there is much more pressure.’’ On a sporting front, Bartholomew himself was a keen soccer/football fan. “I played soccer at school and know gardening but shooting is another world,” Bartholomew says. The Protea clay target team consists of six shooters, three from Gauteng north, and one each from Limpopo, Central Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, which has a rich history of producing shooters for the South African teams. Clive retired from the retail motor trade 18 months ago and has been able to step up his practicing schedule starting with the national

trials circuit which commenced in August last year. Eight national trials take place across the country from Polakwane, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and PE. Last year another PE clay target club member, Guiseppe Tagliaferri, also made the Protea team which competed in the 2015 world championships in Bordeaux, France. “We are very proud of Clive’s achievements to again earn recognition at the highest possible level in the sport and keep the Eastern Cape flag flying,” said Craig Killian the chairman of the PE clay target club. Clive Taverner departed for Ireland last Thursday.

PE student going to G20 Summit in China ANIKA DE BEER AMANDA Hobana, a 20-year-old third year BCom Accounting student at NMMU, has been chosen to represent South Africa at the 7th annual G20 Summit that will be held in Beijing, China, on August 8 and 9. She is one of only 24 girls from across the globe chosen to attend the summit. G20 provides a unique opportunity for young girls to shape the recommendations made to G20 leaders on how to increase Female Labour Force Participation, a key to economic growth, reducing poverty and increasing a country’s GDP. “Post-Summit, we as delegates will help to con-

tribute to the G20 Leaders’ commitment to creating 100 million jobs for women by 2025 by creating our own initiatives or helping to scale up existing initiatives to pay it forward,” said Hobana. She is the co-founder of a local non-profit organisation called the Anogona (Pty) Ltd. She started it in 2014 as the You Can Foundation with CEO Ethu Ncanywa, before changing the name in 2015 to Anogona, meaning ‘She Can’. “Ethu and I met through the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation (AGOF), and through the various activities that we did as part of the AGOF programme, we had to identify inefficiencies and come up with solutions to them. This is how the idea came about, and through our passion for women empowerment and our bigger vision for South Africa,” said Hobana. The foundation aims to empower and mentor young girls from townships who have lost faith in the possibilities that await them if they are successful in putting their lives together. “Anogona is a platform that is in direct response to the growing number of young girls who are either falling through the cracks at school or are seeking assistance in building a bright legacy for themselves,” she said. The foundation covers a number of topics with the young women, including education, relationships, health and beauty and social challenges. “It is through personal interaction that a sense of individual responsibility be re-established to give our girls the commitment to follow through on a path to adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment,” she adds. They give presentations to their target age group at township schools where the girls have to fill out an application form and participate in an interview to join the programme. Hobana entered for the G20 Summit after seeing an advert online. “I wish to get exposure and take my place as a female leader through education, global expe-

rience and entrepreneurial training to increase Female Labour Force Participation in South Africa,” she said. “I also wish to use this opportunity as a way of growing Anogona and attracting sponsors who will buy into this idea and help us reach more girls and grow into a global enterprise.” This is Hobana’s first successful attempt at

joining an international opportunity. She has previously entered for the G20 Summit as well and was unsuccessful. “This is a big milestone in my life and I am very humbled to have been afforded this opportunity. I feel determined to make my fellow South African women proud, especially those who look up to me from the townships,” she said.

Cyclist to share his journey of saving rhinos REPORTER THOSE committed to the fight against rhino poachers, can be part of the live audience for the One Land Love It (OLLI) Expedition Documentary on Friday, August 5 at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre. The audience will hear first-hand from intrepid cyclist Wayne Bolton and his support team, the tales of adventure and inspiration in aid of rhino and natural heritage. The One Land Love It Expedition 2015/2016, which ended at Addo Elephant National Park in February, was a successful fundraising and awareness cycle. Port Elizabeth businessman, Bolton, cycled 6000 km over 80 days to all 19 South African National Parks (SANParks), where he interacted with staff from all the parks. Upon his return, one of the things he was concerned about was how prevalent the threat to the rhino and the natural heritage is. The escalation of poaching in South Africa and the continent as a whole is alarming, with statistics showing that Africa has lost 90% of its elephant population in the last century and if nothing changes the elephant, along with the rhino, could be extinct by 2025. “The Eastern Cape is home to the largest population (of) Black Rhino subspecies bicornis bicornis (meaning two-horned), the desert rhino. Any rhino lost is a disaster, but losing one desert rhino could equate to 150 white rhino lost. This is purely based on numbers and the threatened status of the species. For

this reason we value the support and awareness created by OLLI,” said to John Adendorff, Addo Elephant National Park’s Conservation Manager, Wayne, who considers himself just another ordinary South African, said, “Ordinary people have to make a difference. We can contribute to the cause in any number of

ways - from investing money in suitable organisations, to lobbying government for a stronger response; even by creating awareness through education to those that don’t yet know; even if it is just a like or a share on social media.” Wayne Bolton and his family will be taking to the stage at the Sun Boardwalk Amphitheatre and they

are inviting everyone to be a part of the journey through their #jointcustody campaign. The evening will take the format of a winter campfire setting where the Boltons will recount stories of their journey. His wife, Nikki, headed up the support team that included their retired parents and children who joined their parents

at various points of the expedition to cycle with their father and assist in the support roles. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism CEO, Ms Mandlakazi Skefile, said, “We need to value and protect our delicate and endangered species such as the rhinoceros in order to foster a sustainable tourism industry. Wildlife and natural open spaces provide great value not only as a unique tourist attraction globally but for local visitors as well.” OLLI gained significant exposure in a friendly media environment and much financial support from a generous public and supportive corporate environment. The community is still able to support OLLI’s registered beneficiaries, the SANParks Honorary Rangers and Care for Wild Africa, for whom they have, to date, raised over R140 000. The Honorary Rangers are using the funds towards their counterpoaching initiatives, while Care for Wild takes care of the other end of the story by raising and rehabilitating orphaned rhino calves. Adventurers and celebrities, including Kingsley Holgate, Ashley Dowds, Braam Malherbe, Peter van Kets and more have endorsed OLLI and Wayne’s efforts. To join their journey of #jointcustody, purchase a ticket to their Homecoming Campfire from Alpha Labour Solutions or contact Nikki at nikki@oneland.co.za. Tickets cost R120. The evening will begin with a hot venison potjie meal from 6pm, with musical entertainment, followed by the family recounting the expedition for guests.

MOTORING 21

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

It’s going to be threeway battle in Hungary WHEN the FIA announced a 21-race calendar for the 2016 season, it’s likely that few really took notice of what this actually meant. As the paddock heads to the Hungaroring in Budapest, Hungary for the 11th round it will, astonishingly, only reach the halfway mark of the season on lap 35 of the race. The 70 laps of the Hungaroring are akin to a street circuit thanks to its tight and twisting layout. The second sector especially highlights the flowing nature of the circuit, as it comprises eight medium to high speed flowing turns that demand absolute precision. The price for its kart-like layout and lack of straits, is that overtaking opportunities are not obvious or abundant. The most predictable overtaking opportunity is an out-braking maneuver into turn one. The top two teams in the championship are split on tyre strategy. Pirelli is bringing the white-walled medium, yellow-walled soft, and

red-walled supersoft tyre compounds to the race. Ferrari has loaded up on nine sets of supersoft tyres each for Raikkonen and Vettel while Mercedes have opted for eight sets of the softest tyre for Rosberg and Hamilton. The Hungaroring is a circuit that is notoriously low on grip for which the supersoft tyre is ideal. The Red Bull team are primed for a good weekend in Hungary. The improved Renault power unit is not quite to the standard of Mercedes and Ferrari but it’s not far off. They do, however, excel in the aerodynamic department and with a better power unit than ever bolted to the back of the Red Bull and the tight and twisting nature of the Hungaroring, Christian Horner and his team can be more than bullish about their chances, pun intended. The inter-team rivalry between Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen will be especially interesting to note this weekend.

However, the team experienced their worst race weekend, in terms of performance, at Silverstone. But Raikkonen believes that the team’s struggles in Britain were a once off. The biggest issue, which plagued Ferrari at the last race weekend, was the cooler weather. It’s a welldocumented fact that both drivers struggle to get the front tyres to the correct operating temperature in cool conditions. This shouldn’t be an issue this weekend as the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend is in hot summer conditions. But while Red Bull and Ferrari are likely to be in better shape for Hungary, the ever-dominant Mercedes will still be lurking. Their qualifying pace advantage will be a big asset around a circuit where overtaking is difficult. Nevertheless, while the two Silver Arrows are in prime form they should, and likely will, face stiff competition for the top step of the podium in Hungary.

In their six races, so far, as teammates Verstappen has scored 77 points to Ricciardo’s 64 points. But the Hungarian Grand Prix will be a big test for the Verstappen vs. Ricciardo battle. Ricciardo has an affinity for the tight and twisty circuits as he has proved on several occasions including earlier this year in Monaco. The Aussie knows his way around the Hungaroring too as it was here, in 2014, that he pulled off several magnificent overtaking moves to win a memorable race. This will be a good indicator of how Verstappen is progressing. “I have to up my game compared to where I was before in Toro Rosso because he (Ricciardo) is very quick,” said Verstappen. It should be a better weekend for Ferrari too. As it stands Kimi Raikkonen currently sits third in the championship with 106 points, while teammate Sebastian Vettel is fifth on 98 points.

Fun Walk for diabetes awareness this Saturday THE Refreshhh Sugar Free Global Diabetes Walk takes place this Saturday morning at Lakeside, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, starting at 9am and is open to the public. A fun-filled untimed 5km walk around the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and Lake precinct is an annual event hosted around the world to highlight the international fight for diabetes awareness. Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels that result from defects in insulin secretion, or its action, or both. Normally our blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hor-

mone produced by the pancreas. Insulin lowers the blood glucose level. When the blood glucose elevates (for example, after eating food), insulin is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose level by promoting the uptake of glucose into body cells. In those with diabetes, the absence of sufficient production of or lack of response to insulin causes hyperglycemia. Diabetes is a chronic medical condition, meaning that although it can be controlled, it lasts a lifetime. Over time diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage and over time is the primary cause of strokes, coronary

July Night Relay next Tuesday The July edition of the Town Lodge Business Night Relay takes place next Tuesday, July 26, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and is open to running teams of 5 people and

walking teams of 3 people. This unique corporate team building event sees team members completing a 3.5km loop in relay style within the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium precinct, starting at 6pm, followed by prize giving at 8pm with over R20 000 in lucky draw prizes up for grabs. The Night Relay also offers companies and social teams a great training opportunity for the upcoming Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race which takes place on Sunday, October 2, for teams of 5 runners and one MTB rider. See www.NightRelay.co.za for more info ahead of next Tuesday’s event, the penultimate in the 2016 winter series.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE

Chevrolet Captiva(tes) with newlook 7 seater IF I should list the things a mom would like for her vehicle on the mom’s taxi route, I would say at the top of the list would be practicality, versatility, stylish package, ride comfort – and all of this in a car that is still small enough to fit into tight parking spaces or that is easy to parallel park. Express on Wheels spent a week with one such vehicle, which certainly ticks many of the boxes for a mom’s taxi – and in addition, one that dad would also enjoy driving. Being first launched on our roads in 2007 the Chevrolet Captiva is no stranger to SA motorists and in March this year Chev launched an upgraded version of this popular 7-seater. The upgrade includes exterior and interior changes, the new Chevrolet MyLink System with Phone Projection Technology and a High Level of standard features The Captiva is available in 3 models – two with 2.4 litre petrol engines with a choice between manual and automatic transmission and the third a 2.2 litre turbo diesel with automatic transmission. The one test driven for this column was the Chevrolet Captiva 2.4L FWD with automatic transmission, which retails at R415 500.

The Captiva features plenty of cupholders and storage solutions that are very practical. The passengers in the middle row also have armrests with cupholders. Standard features The list of standard features has also been extended including an on-board computer, eightway electronically adjustable driver’s seat, dual zone climate control, the Mylink system with touchscreen, rear park assist, cruise control, keyless entry and keyless start (PEPS), Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist and power folding mirrors. The handbrake is also not the conventional sort, but rather a lever that can be pulled up and down. Ride The 2016 Captiva is available in a choice of either the 2.4 litre petrol engine or a 2.2 litre turbo

diesel engine. For the 2.4 litre petrol engine, fuel consumption for the combined cycle is stated as 8.8 l/100 km. The 2.2 litre diesel engine model is only available with a 6-speed automatic transmission and achieves a combined fuel consumption figure measured at 7.8 l/100 km. The Captiva offers a solid drive and is not floaty on the open road. With the test vehicle having an automatic transmission with 2.4 litre engine on a big-sized vehicle, it is not meant for spirited driving or having too heavy a foot on the accelerator when you want to speed up or overtake. But it is quite willing to get going and offers a comfortable, surefooted ride both on the open road as well and the urban commute.

Exterior Most of the exterior upgrades can be seen in the front with a new grille and front fascia which give the Captiva the latest Chevrolet Family look. The headlamps have LED day time running signature lighting with automatic on and off. Chrome exhaust pipes add to the sporty look as do the stylish looking side steps. The 2016 models have 18”Alloy wheels. Interior The 2016 Captiva features an all new dashboard and instrument cluster with the biggest addition being the MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen. The second generation of MyLink introduces phone projection technology, which allows users with compatible smart phones the ability to project some of their phone’s apps and functions onto the screen of the car’s infotainment system. Most of these functions can be controlled from the new leather steering wheel. The interior looks modern and classy with leather seats and stitched leather accents. In addition, the Captiva offers plenty of storage space along with 477 litres of cargo carrying space with all the seats up and 942 litres with the seats folded down. The boot has a pull-out cover to protect its contents from prying eyes with bad intentions. I liked the versatility of two extra seats in the back. Clever design has made it look and feel roomy with the versatility of two extra seats without it driving and feeling like a big bulky vehicle. It has a high seating position, without one having to struggle to get in and out. The third row of seats fold down flat into the floor of the boot. Even this row of passengers have access to a cupholder.
