A very Happy New Year to our readers, and welcome to the January 2023 edition!

Another brilliant photograph was provided by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography for our front cover. Z-energy fitness group, based in Peacehaven, did an icy Christmas swim for the local charity ABC fund. They raised £600, which we think was brave and maybe slightly mad. A big well done to the group.

This edition has a lot of information about help during this winter period. See the community section for warm spaces, food assistance and help with money worries.

Over Christmas, we said goodbye to a long-term advertiser, Little Haven. Juliette is retiring from running her holiday let. We wish her well and are very grateful for the continued support she has given our publication over the years.

What is Chateau Velo? We are an indoor cycling studio (often referred to as a spin studio, too) offering a range of musicdriven exercise classes to help you get sweaty & smiley!

I don’t doubt some of you are sceptical of ‘smile’ and ‘exercise’ as related things, but I understand.

Exercise can be a dirty word, something that has to be hard, associated with pain (no pain, no gain after all!) You do it because you ‘have to, or even worse, ‘should do’ (with all the guilt that can come when you don’t).

But we want to show you that it doesn’t have to be that way!

Our dream is that getting sweaty is something that you want to do. That it becomes something, you enjoy. Because doing things you enjoy is much easier than doing things you have to do.

Our founding principle is “Ride Hard, Ride Happy”. We want to get your heart rate up, get you sweaty, and get you all those endorphins and good things for your physical health from getting on the bike and moving those pedals. But then we want to get you all that energy and good things for your mental health from playing some amazing music. That magical soundtrack will make you forget it’s meant to be a workout and is just something you enjoy. We want it to be about making you feel good.

So you’re sweaty, smiley and satisfied, as standard!

We have a range of classes at different times each day to suit your schedule. The only person who sees the numbers on your bike is you (if you even want to!) - so you don’t have to worry about competing with anyone else, trying to get to a particular heart rate or colour - you can ride with the music. All classes are adaptable to any fitness level, and we have some absolute beginner “try rides” running to test us out.

Still not sure it’s for you? Then just come for coffee and cake! We have “Le Café” serving locally roasted Small Batch coffee, shakes, smoothies and cakes. Because, as I said, we want to make you feel good :)

At Rendevous Hall Back of the House Project charity Shop

We meet the 3rd Tuesday of the month 10:30 am12:00 pm at the Rendevous Hall at the back of the House Project Charity shop on the South Coast Road.

We are a support group and anybody no matter how big or little their caring role is they are welcome to join us. It’s just a £1 for tea and biscuits.

Often we have a support worker drop by to bring us up to date with any relevant news. we are planning topical themes having just had valentine’s heart shaped biscuits courtesy of Val. The Easter meeting will include an Easter raffle.

We are hoping to expand our get togethers to occasional lunches and coffee times in the local cafes. As well as visits to local places of interest. Please feel free to pop in and see us.

Havens Food Cooperative is a scheme to reduce waste, repurpose items and redistribute food daily. Working under the umbrella of Havens Community Hub CIC, we prioritise families, groups and individuals with the highest need and ensure any surplus is not wasted. We are given short shelf-life, mislabelled, wonky or overproduced food/items.

Havens Happy Clubs - a social interaction, lonelinessbusting service for older people with creative activities, friendship and reduced social isolation.

Haven Community Cars - for those who cannot easily access public transport or other transport providers.

Wave Community Bank has launched a new Help Point within Havens Community Hub. It aims to help local residents access financial services and help with managing their money. The drop-in help point is open every Wednesday from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

Warm spaces: This is a initiative set up by local councils, churches and other volunteer groups. Below is the councils directory, please contact the organisation before you travel to make sure they are running in bad weather. You can find information in the community section for most of these organisations too.

Peacehaven Community Supermarket is open on Thursdays from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Kempton House Day Centre.

Peacehaven Community Supermarket is a shop where you only pay what you can afford for the foods you like. Community supermarkets provide a long-term, community-led approach to food insecurity, help lessen the need for foodbanks and reduce food waste.

There is a community fridge at Denton Island. MondayFriday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Anyone can help themselves to food for free or contribute their own surplus food.

THE POWER OF LISTENING TO YOUR BODY FOR BETTER RECOVERY AND MOBILITY

Probably the most important thing you can do towards improving your health and well-being overall is to learn the art of listening to your body - it is the boss after all! This is the one main overriding factor that I notice makes all the difference to recovery and maintaining mobility alongside treatment, particularly with long-term and less easy issues.

People with long-term issues, even some that can look pretty serious on MRI, often start to make the best use of their treatment and gain more freedom in their bodies when they learn this simple lesson. I have seen people start to do things that I didn’t even think they were ready to do…yet.

This is no airy-fairy thing, nor is it second nature to many people. It is simple, though often less than easy!

So how do we learn to do this?

Alongside treatment, including related exercises, there is always an element of learning and coaching and increasing self-awareness and self-discovery. We all hold beliefs about ourselves, who we are and how we behave that makes us…us! Sometimes these beliefs can interfere with our recovery. Experience is an essential part of learning and when we experience something for ourselves, we are more able to own it and embody it.

For example: If you are ‘the kind of person’ who ‘mucks in and helps to get things done’ this can be an admirable quality, though is less helpful if you have a back problem and your ‘mucking in’ involves heavy lifting or something else that causes you strain. You may have always done this and been mostly fine, or perhaps not even realised the impact it has on you, though when you realise and experience that this repeatedly puts your recovery backwards and your pain levels and incapacity higher then you can start to make some different choices. Perhaps ‘mucking in’ can become a different way of helping and organising and still maintaining a sense of ‘the kind of person’ you are. Usually, the people you are helping would not like to think that this help is the cause of any added pain and incapacity for you.

For example: If you believe that you can ‘push through’ any pain or issues you are also at risk of exacerbating your problems.

This ‘push through’ attitude can be useful in endurance sports and achievements when you are not injured; with injury this belief becomes counter-productive. If I were to ask you to put your hand up in front of you with your palm facing forwards, and I pushed my palm against yours, the natural response of your body would be to push back. If we push the body, it pushes back – this is a natural response! In stretching or aiming to increase mobility in a joint, pushing will create resistance in the body. Learning to go to the point where the body is still comfortable, breathe and ‘listen’ with an awareness of the body and gently invite the body to go further, this awareness and ‘listening’ will take you into more movement, more comfortably without causing resistance, when the body is ready and able.

Making changes: Alerting someone to the fact that their belief and behaviour could be holding them back is only a starting point. Our behaviours and beliefs are usually well-established over a long period of time. More evidence, often in the way of repeated suffering is usually necessary to help us recognise that we could be exacerbating our problems. Whenever we push ourselves too far, we know it. The trick is to learn to recognise before we go too far, push too far, or do too much. This is an ongoing process as we are constantly changing.

The body is truly amazing and is always doing its best with what it’s got. When we learn to listen to what it tells us and respect this and act accordingly, we become its ally in recovery and health.

The ability to learn to listen BEFORE the body says NO has the potential of giving you so much added mobility and capability that it is worth every attention you give it. It is helpful to have someone guide and support you through this process – if it were easy and obvious – you would have done it already! I help many patients through this process in their own way, empowering them in to increase awareness and make choices that support their health and well-being in the longer term. It is a working together – you, your body and me. I am always delighted to see people regaining their lives through better health and movement.

Gentle January - Dare to be the Change

In Britain the top 3 resolutions for 2022 were: improving fitness, better diet and losing weight. Last January, instead of making a resolution, I chose a word to set my intention for the year: *** Gentleness***

I have carried it in my pocket and held onto it over the last 12 months. It has been an ally on my shoulder guiding me, a whisper in my ear supporting me and a friend by my side.

As the year unfolded, I discovered that there is more to ‘gentleness’ than meets the eye. There is much meaning and depth to it. It has countless facets and fits into all areas of life. It brings smoothness to sharp angles, softens tensions and is available to everyone.

In 2022 I joined “A Touch of Gentleness”. A local, not-for-profit community of people who are committed to bringing ‘connection, touch, and gentleness’ back to society. Together, with a team of volunteers we attended a free training day in East Sussex to learn and to practice the art of hand massage whilst offering a listening ear. This service is then offered to local communities through care homes, hospices, organisations and other venues and events. I have witnessed transformations not just in the receivers of the hand massage but also in the volunteer-givers.

As winter settles in, end of year festivities are easing off. January can feel like a slow and deflating month for some. I can’t imagine a better time to bring gentleness to life and welcome it into our world in a more mindful and deliberate way.

Here are 2 ideas to get you started in 2023 it is as easy as 1 2 3!

1- FIND OUT ABOUT A TOUCH OF GENTLENESS - I highly recommend the free in person course which combines, reflection, theory, hands-on practice of giving / receiving hand massage and simply connecting with other people. An inspirational day during which Helen Prosper, the founder, gave us the skills, motivation and confidence to go out and share gentle touch with friends, family and the wider community. 2022 was a good year for us, and we have brought smiles to some 1000 people in a challenging year. We know there are still tough times ahead.

We’ve managed a few fundraising and networking events, and our profile is spreading. We were lucky enough to attract funding enabling us to provide the following:

● A trip to meet the Easter Bunny on the Chichester canal for 36 children & their families

● 100 Easter craft bags were distributed to local children

● We topped up the Play Team cupboard at The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital with bubbles, arts & crafts, games, books, crayons, etc., to the tune of £800

● 200 wristbands for a day out on the Brighton Pier

● 100 vouchers for Knockhatch

● We paid for a group of disabled children to go to Middle Farm for the day and provided ice cream.

Christmas is always our busiest time, 2022 being no exception, and we provided the following:

● 100 x £40 food hampers to go to families in need

● 404 pantomime seats were purchased to see Aladdin in Eastbourne, and a chocolate box for every child

● We met Father Christmas on the Chichester Canal 32-seater boat.

Looking ahead to 2023, we plan to continue running our days out and organising Christmas events.

Local charity appeal to the Government

A charity that scaled up its operations to support the community through the pandemic crisis is asking MPs to push the government to pay out the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

This will enable hundreds of local authorities and notfor-profit organisations to start vital planned projects to help residents through the winter.

The Fund announced in 2017 as a part-replacement of European Union funding that started to end in May this year, leaving a gap in the resources many organisations were using to support communities most at risk.

"Our resources were stretched ten times further than expected during the lockdown period", said Paula Woolven, Founder of Havens Community Hub in Newhaven. "It wasn't a case of 'we can't' but a case of 'we will, somehow', with the support of volunteers and local donors".

"Coming out of the pandemic, we are hit with a perfect storm of recovery plus the cost of living crisis. We were encouraged by the announcement of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delighted to be selected by Lewes District Council as a funded project to create further vital help in a vastly undersupported areaPeacehaven and the surrounding towns and villages.

Local authorities are doing the 'heavy lifting’ of ensuring the projects are viable and doing their due diligence. Unfortunately, the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities have failed to meet their timescale of 'rubber stamping' the projects by the start of October and starting to issue the funding from the end of October."

Local authorities have reported a 'deafening silence' to requests for information about when the central government will release funding. The longer it's delayed, the more costs are being added to the projects due to the unprecedented rise in interest rates and inflation, leaving some asset-based projects in danger of not being financially viable.

"Thankfully, the costs of our project are not rising as quickly as asset-based projects would be," said Paula, "as the community has pledged its support. However, it is frustrating knowing we could be helping more people at a time when help is most needed."
