Welcome to the November edition

I was looking at my garden today. We struggled a bit mid-summer due to the heat of getting the plants to make a big show. Then we were blessed with lovely rain, and the grass was all lush and green again. Autumn blooms have come into abundance, and some other flowers we thought had given up have had a new flush. It looks truly amazing.

We have some interesting articles this month, one I have actually penned myself. It has been a long time since I have put pen to paper; I had forgotten how much I enjoy it. I hope you enjoy reading it.

I keep half an ear on the news; lately, I find it too nauseating to watch much. I do, however, feel compelled to look at the headlines and have some idea of what is going on. I have a tune running around in my head, 'There may be trouble ahead,' an oldie, but it makes me chuckle when I hear the words. Very apt for today still.

Please take a look at our Community Pages this month; plenty of lighthearted activities are going on to lift the spirits. It is even more important now to stay in touch with family and the wider community to stay sane. Please note, the Peacehaven Players are back with their panto for this year, Cinderella. Book early to avoid disappointment.

We are a support group and anybody no matter how big or little their caring role is they are welcome to join us. It’s just a £1 for tea and biscuits. Often we have a support worker drop by to bring us up to date with any relevant news. we are planning topical themes having just had valentine’s heart shaped biscuits courtesy of Val. The Easter meeting will include an Easter raffle.

A sprain of the soft tissues of the neck when they become stretched and damaged. It is common after a car accident when the neck is forcefully thrown forwards, backward, or sideways; the extreme flexion of the neck then whips back in the other direction. It can also occur from a blow to the head during sport or an assault. The cervical spine, or neck, is designed to be flexible and is less protected than the rest of the spine, which leaves it more vulnerable to injury.

Anatomy: The neck consists of 7 cervical vertebrae; the first 2, the atlas, and the axis are shaped differently from the remaining five and allow movement of the skull from side to side, backward, and forward. Between each vertebra are a disc and a nerve exiting from the spine. The neck has many complex muscles and ligaments to allow movement and support. The anterior longitudinal ligament, running along the front of the spine is often injured during whiplash.

Symptoms: Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, discomfort, and stiffness in the neck area with limited mobility; swelling, muscle spasms, headaches, and pain in the shoulders, arms, jaw, and lower back. Less common symptoms include pins and needles, numbness or weakness in the arms and hands, tiredness, dizziness, insomnia, poor concentration, memory loss, and irritability. Symptoms may become worse a few hours to a few days later. You will need to seek urgent medical attention if you have more severe symptoms such as blurred vision, nausea, ringing in the ears or difficulty breathing.

Causes: Common causes include road traffic accidents and collisions, a blow to the head by a heavy object, during sports or an assault, a slip or fall where the head is jolted backward, head-banging, a roller coaster ride, and bungee jumping. The over-extension and recoil damage ligaments and tendons in the neck. You are more at risk if you are a woman because your neck muscles are often less developed, an athlete, particularly in high-risk sports, you have poor posture or congenital spinal problems; also, if your car head restraints are badly fitted. Complications are more likely if you are over 65, have immediate pain after the injury, have nerve damage or numbness, or are unable to walk or sit down.

Diagnosis: You will need to see your doctor if you have pain and stiffness in the neck, numbness or tingling following a road traffic accident, or impact to the head. The doctor with examine your neck for the range of movement, swelling, tenderness, and damage to muscles, ligaments, and discs, and may also test your reflexes. X-rays, MRI, or a CT scan may be required to rule out more serious injuries, such as a fracture, spinal cord compression, or nerve injury.

Treatment: Self-help includes using ice packs to reduce pain and swelling, heat packs to soothe muscle pain, maintaining a good posture, especially at the computer, avoiding sitting or lying down for long periods, sleeping on your front, or using more than one pillow, a supportive pillow may be helpful. Whiplash is thought to get better on its own in a few weeks or months or after some basic treatment; keeping your neck mobile and continuing with normal activities, specific exercises, and stretches, taking paracetamol or ibuprofen painkillers or something stronger from your doctor if needed. You may be referred to a specialist or pain clinic if the pain persists for a long time.

Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine the neck, shoulders, arms, jaw, and spine and all surrounding tissues; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength, and functionality and assess nerve pathways. Consider the effect of the force of impact on the whole body. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests. Treat to reduce muscle tension, nerve irritation, and soft tissue pain. Advice regarding specific exercises and stretching the neck and shoulders. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques,

Help for a Local Community Group

A host of up-cycled gardening tools have been donated to Chatsworth Park volunteers based in Telscombe Cliffs.

The gift, along with a welcome grant, came from the Budding Foundation in collaboration with Tates Garden Centres.

The group looks after local greenspaces and involves young people and families in their community work.

Budding Foundation is a Sussex based charity which works to improve the lives of young people, especially those who have experienced social deprivation, trauma or live with a disability.

The charity’s founder, Clive Gravett said: “We are delighted to help this hard-working and community-minded group in Telscombe and joined forces with our friends at Paradise Park garden centre in Newhaven to make this come to fruition.”

Communication: It is not just talking…

I sat quietly in the living room, dogs asleep next to me. The rain pushed around by gust of wind was tip-tapping rhythmically on the window. Suddenly, without warning, Kira lifted her head. Her body was perfectly still. Only her ears moved ever so slightly, precisely and purposely, scanning the air. Beyond the noise of the rain, her sensitive dog ears had captured a sound that, as a human, I did not have access to, and sure enough, a few moments later, the doorbell rang.

After attending to the door, I returned and praised her for her guard dog skills!

This time she was not just hearing but listening to me. Watching my every move. Tuning into the tone of my voice. Solid eye contact, ears lifting and rotating. I could tell she was fully present, listening intensely using her whole being.

This experience got me thinking about our human listening habits.

When you listen to someone, do you ever find yourself:

Faking attention, practising selective hearing?

- Waiting for your turn to talk?

- Interrupting the conversation?

- Making assumptions, jumping to conclusions?

Giving in to internal or external distractions?

How do you feel when the person you are talking to is engaging in some of these habits?

We can all improve our listening skills, and the first step is to stop talking (our body gives us a clue since most of us have 2 ears and 1 mouth, so perhaps we should use them proportionally!) and observe our own ‘not so helpful’ listening habits with humour and kindness.

Here are Kira’s 5 top tips to be a better human listener:

1 - Remove external distractions – put your phone down, switch off the TV

2 - Be present and aware of your inner chatter

3 - Show that you are listening – a nod, tilt your head

4 - Look for verbal and non-verbal cues - intonation, pace, body language, facial expressions

5 - Listen to understand (not to respond) – be aware of your own interpretations and assumptions and ask for clarification.

(Note: if you feel that you are not in the right space to listen, be honest and gentle with yourself and the other person and say so.)

Lend an ear to someone, temporarily disconnect from tech, reconnect to the subtle and powerful art of listening and dare to be the change you want to see in your organisation, family, community and life!

I think everyone is feeling a little on edge at the moment. It is no surprise with the doom, gloom and fear that has been fed to us constantly over the last few years. And it is still ongoing.

I have known Chris Odle for many years; he was a great supporter of the magazine when we first got going and helped enhance it with his articles. It is no wonder that whenever I feel things going a bit crazy in the community, I turn to him to provide some nononsense but practical things I can pass on to you.

We all have issues at the moment. These are not just little niggles; they are real-time things that threaten the level of survival that we are used to. So here are some ideas from Chris and me for decreasing stress and promoting recovery.

1. Take ownership of your situation: Find out the biggest problem in your life. We often focus on the little things when in reality, we are not confronting the big problem. I challenge you to find it as the first step. Finding this one point of confusion will help to initially quiet your space.

2. Gain perspective: Step back and think about your entire life, then consider how today’s stressor fits into the big picture. You may be better off than you think, or it may be a real danger to you. This is your springboard to start solving the real issue.

3. Get help from a professional if the situation warrants it. Over the last few years, I have found that if you do not know how to handle something because you do not understand it, you are asking the wrong person. Find the right one, and things can start to become more straightforward. This is especially true of finances, mortgages or just handling day-to-day expenses.

4. If you are not confronting and you are anxious, write one step towards solving the problem every day and DO IT! If you don’t, acknowledge it and put it on your list for the next day. BUT DO DO IT! This could be a phone call to the mortgage company to see where you stand or a call to the bank or credit card company, but you must get honest and do it.

Here are a few tips for us during such times:

5. Set limits on screen time: Yes, this means not constantly checking emails, texting, and reviewing social media. It is lovely to be part of something, but the something we should be part of is life, not the computer highway. There can be a lot of toxic information on these platforms or unsavoury

characters with far too strong a viewpoint that you can handle. Disconnect or limit the time. I guarantee you will feel better almost immediately.

5. Try a mind-body scan: Find a quiet place with no distractions. Sit or lie down. Set a time for 5 minutes if you like. Start at the top of your head and slowly go down to your toes. Notice all physical sensations: hot/cold, itchy, tense, etc. Observe, don’t judge. You can do this anywhere, anytime, to slow down and calm your body. Try using these questions to help with the process.

• Question 1: What are you feeling physically?

• Question 2: What are you feeling emotionally?

• Question 3: What are you thinking?

Based on this scan, what have you learned about yourself today?

6. If you have the time, volunteer once a week: This will likely increase the time you spend around people whose company you enjoy. Plus, you’ll be living according to your values, which always provides a nice dose of goodness. I love to get into the orchard a few times a month. It is very cathartic to spend time with the trees and not think. It is also lovely to talk with likeminded people.
