I have had a lovely morning in Peacehaven Orchard, helping plant new trees. I got to meet a lovely group of people who came to help. Everyone's hard work was greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, I could not stay all day as I had a strict deadline for this edition. Working in nature like that set me up for the rest of the day. I felt energised, confident and alert as I worked.

January is over. As we move into February, the plants and bulbs are already coming slowly into bloom in my garden. I am enjoying the crisp days that we are having. It is much more pleasant to get out and about when it is not raining and foggy and lifts your spirits as you think of the brighter days to come.

Saltdean Townswomen’s Guild The trouble with spring… Written by Diane – on behalf of Saltdean Townswomen’s Guild Spring can’t be far away, my bulbs are up and looking healthy, but that does not go for everything in life and in the Townswomen’s Guild we have annual campaigns to make life better for everyone. This year, 2022 we are campaigning for two things in particular: One is the need for cyclists to have more responsibility towards pedestrians, maybe not stringent laws, as cycling is a great form of exercise. But some guidelines to be followed so that pedestrians are not put at risk. Of course, there are two sides to everything, and cyclists need to feel safe as well. Cycle lanes help but then that annoys the motorists. That is why discussion and debate are a good idea so all areas are considered and dealt with fairly. The other campaign is for more public toilets; it is considered that for health and hygiene reasons alone, they are as important as refuse collection! We need them, and to know that there are many available encourages more people to take days out. All good for the economy and free movement as the pandemic eases. Our members had a lovely Christmas Lunch at the Saltdean Tavern, and our activity groups are back in full swing. Our two recent groups are now looking for participants, for instance, have you ever played Canasta? Well, many of us haven’t so now we can learn and play canasta together.
The new Natural Health and Wellbeing section, meets to discuss how to live better and stay well longer. The group leader has years of experience in this field so shares information for discussion, over a coffee and cheery comments on life! “Southern Stomp” raising money for Seahaven Community Food Project The “Southern Stomp” Linedancers raised a final total of £677 to buy Christmas foodstuffs and treats for the Seahaven Community Food project. We presented all our purchases to Stef Lake from the organisation knowing that it would be put to good use for members of our local communities, at the Community Supermarkets and in the Christmas Hampers delivered across the area. It was fabulous to hear from Stef the impact and benefit others would have as a result of the generosity of the dancers, a magnificent effort from the sale of the ‘Lockdown Bears’ and individual donations! Peacehaven and Telscombe Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group Peacehaven & Telscombe Neighbourhood Development Plan Consultation Opens The draft Peacehaven & Telscombe Neighbourhood Development Plan (NP) is now ready for consultation with local residents and groups from the 1�� February to 14�� March. The NP is a planning document for the local area, that once adopted through a formal process can be used by communities and planning departments to help shape neighbourhoods for the future. The document will be used to determine future planning applications up to 2030, can encourage greater investment in the area and will entitle local Town Councils to receive 25% of the Community Infrastructure Levy created in the NP area. The overarching vision is: “Peacehaven and Telscombe Towns aim to be sustainable, with clean air and an environment providing a good quality of life for all inhabitants and neighbourhoods.” Underpinning the vision is the concept of 20-minute neighbourhoods – a compact and connected place where residents and workers can easily access services that meet most of their daily needs by foot, by bike (e-bike and e-scooters) or buggy. Additional services can easily be accessed by public transport, taxi or car. The neighbourhood plan also sets out the important Local Green Spaces and Views that residents would like to see protected, and areas where development that meets local needs for affordable homes, jobs and leisure can be met. The two town councils would like resident’s views on the Neighbourhood Plan Vision, Objectives, Policies and Projects set out in summary in a leaflet and in full online at: www.peacehaven-and-telscombe-neighbourhoodplan-steering-group.co.uk. There are paper response forms available to collect from the two civic centres or to complete online (with links from Facebook and the website). There will be an online presentation and Question and Answer session online at 7:00 pm on 10�� February (which will be posted on the website afterwards) and drop-in sessions at Peacehaven Civic Centre on Wednesday 16�� February 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm and at Telscombe Civic Centre on 21�� February 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. All the comments that are received from the residents are collated, the NP amended if needed, and then this is submitted to the Lewes District Council for them to consult formally with neighbouring Councils and landowners. Comments received and a final copy of the NP will be sent to an Examiner appointed by the Government and the two town councils who will test the robustness of the policies against the evidence and will report back. If the Examiner is happy that the NP is sound, the Town Councils with the District Council will take the final copy to a local referendum where people can vote on whether to adopt the plan formally. If adopted, the plan will continue to be reviewed and updated until 2030 when a new plan will be needed. This is the start of an on-going living document that will help Peacehaven and Telscombe manage future growth in the area. Paralympian Gold Medallist / Strictly Star Supports Barbers Christmas Fundraiser A barber hair salon in Telscombe Cliffs has raised over £1,500 for local charities at their annual fundraising event, despite having to downsize plans due to rising Covid infection numbers.

Barber stylists at Maverick Barber Co, owned by Doe Mehmet, gave haircuts, Turkish wet shaves, and beard services on Monday 13�� December plus an online raffle, and donated all proceeds to the Havens Community Hub which saves and redistributes over 1 ton of perishable food from supermarkets per week, provides day centre activities for older people with complex needs and supports other local groups and charities with administration support and advice. The Havens Community Hub also founded the Havens Community Cars charity, which has over 400 members supported by 15 trained volunteer drivers who offer transport solutions for medical appointments, social activities, and daily living needs.

January is a month where we make promises to ourselves, but by February they are often long forgotten. Despite my best intentions over the years, I have not always managed to follow on all of my resolutions. For the past 7 years, however, I have chosen a word to be my companion for the whole of that year. Just imagine … A word greeting you every morning to set your intention for the day. An ally on your shoulder guiding you. A pebble in your pocket to hold on to. A whisper in your ear to support you. A presence to inspire you. A friend by your side. I have had the pleasure to journey with align, presence, embrace, soar, connect, balance and dare. In 2022 the word which invited itself in my life is ‘gentleness’ I am going to explore bringing this word in all areas of life including my relationship with technology. As useful and precious as they are, my phone and my computer can at times feel too bright, invasive, abrupt, lifeless and transactional. Their presence can become draining, distracting and dehumanising. In order to balance this, I am dedicating some time this month to “A Touch of Gentleness” (www.atouchofgentleness.org ) a growing community of people committed to bring connection, touch and gentleness back to society. (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites Osteopathy Tips DOG WALKING ISSUES - PROBLEMS FROM WALKING YOUR POOCH As a nation, we are animal lovers; we love our fur family and want to take good care of them. What about the impact on our bodies of an activity such as walking or beloved dogs? Some of the issues are year-round, others are seasonal such as the terrain, the weather, the livestock and their young where we are walking. Many of my patients have injuries and aches and pains from issues around dog walking. COMMON PHYSICAL ISSUES Many of the physical issues from dog walking relate to slips, trips and falls; other common issues are from a dog pulling on the lead, lifting heavy dogs in and out of the car when they are no longer able to jump and also carrying an injured dog; even if the dog is small we are probably dealing with emotions that make the task trickier. Issues such as tennis or golfer's elbow, rotator cuff and shoulder joint pain as well as forearm, wrist and hand pain can result from a dog pulling on the lead either suddenly or repeatedly, this can also pull up into the neck and back. Strained back or neck, sprained ankle and twisted knee can result from slips, trips and falls as well as awkward lifting and bending, e.g. to pick up a ball repeatedly. WEATHER, SEASONS AND TERRAIN Each season has its issues with dog walking. Icy or wet ground makes it more likely that you can slip, trip or fall. When the weather is cold you may be more likely to get muscle aches and pains and we are certainly all stiffer in the morning than in the evening anyway. When the weather is hot, we need to keep ourselves and our dogs well hydrated and may need to go out earlier to avoid the intense heat. Dry ground may have more loose stones that we can trip on. We need to be aware when there is low lying strong sunlight that it can blind drivers, making it more difficult to spot walkers at certain angles. It is also important to know your own and your dog's limitations of distance and energy for a walk. FOOTWEAR AND ATTIRE Blisters can be a problem if your shoes do not fit well. It is also important to have appropriate shoes for the weather and terrain and often something with good support to help keep you steadier. Whilst wellies help keep you dry, they do not always offer good support.
If you have issues with over pronation or falling arches, a good foot support can help the alignment of many joints in the body by starting with good foot alignment. Of course, weather appropriate clothes are important, rainwear in the wet as well as hats, sunglasses and sun cream in the heat. KEEPING FIT FOR DOG WALKING We need to be fit to walk our dogs like any other physical activity. Even though dog walking is itself an exercise, we need to keep ourselves strong, fit and supple to keep it going all year round. Strengthening and stretching exercises are important. The whole body can be affected by slips, trips and falls, a dog pulling on the lead, lack of upper back strength with a big dog on the lead, lifting large dogs, incorrect lifting, lack of core strength. TIPS Back, Neck and Shoulders: It is important to learn correct lifting technique to keep the back strong and also how to use your upper back muscles around the shoulder blade to have better strength and control in your arm and prevent the tension going to the low back, the neck or the arm from a lead pull. Good core strength is crucial for a healthy low back and in fact for the whole-body biomechanics. Learn to stretch well. Elbows, Forearms, Wrists and Hands: There are some good stretching exercises for forearms, wrists and hands to release tension and also build strength. Avoid gripping the lead too tight, try one that wraps around the wrist for extra control. Hips, Knees, Ankles and Feet: Strength and flexibility are important for keeping active. Learn to stretch hip flexors, hamstrings, butt muscles, calves, feet and ankles. Wear appropriate footwear and orthotics if needed. Keep the thighs strong and avoid twisting the knee suddenly or repeatedly.
