The Leonard Hotel Unveils £1.5M First Phase Refurbishment

After decades of welcoming guests from across the globe, The Leonard Hotel has completed a £1.5 million refurbishment of one of its four Georgian townhouses, establishing the timeless English boutique hotel located in Central London’s Marylebone as a haven of elegance and contemporary comfort.

Family-owned and operated since 2003, The Leonard’s first full-scale renovation breathes fresh air into the space, while preserving the classic British charm that has captivated guests since its inception and stands it apart from the surrounding luxury hotels.

Initiated in 2023, this ambitious project has introduced enhanced bedroom and bathroom layouts, improved room flow and luxurious new materials, blending heritage and character with modern needs.

The creative vision for this extensive refurbishment was led by Director Saachi Sehgal, who worked closely with the renowned Russell Sage Studio to honour the hotel’s quintessentially English aesthetic.

The refurbishment emphasises flexibility, comfort, and luxury. Redesigned suite layouts introduce sliding doors for a spacious feel while ensuring privacy for larger parties. Bathrooms finished in rich marble now feature walk-in showers, underfloor heating, double sinks, and private toilet compartments, designed to accommodate two guests simultaneously.

Attention to heritage is evident throughout, with details balancing old and new. Custom diamondpatterned carpets in classic beiges and greys pair seamlessly with bespoke print headboards, armchairs and colour-trimmed curtains that add pops of colour to the eclectic English aesthetic. Restored vintage furniture, chandeliers and artwork create a cohesive, yet individual character in each room.

Aligned with the hotel’s commitment to sustainability, The Leonard has introduced Zennio’s smart guest room management system that uses occupancybased sensors to optimise energy efficiency of lighting and air conditioning. Urban Apothecary’s sustainable toiletries in attractive refillable dispensers add an ecoluxurious touch to the redesigned bathrooms. In addition to the rest of the bedrooms, the next phases of The Leonard’s refurbishment will include the communal areas, featuring a planned separate entrance for the hotel’s restaurant. The upgrades will bring a contemporary twist to the traditional English style, creating an inviting retreat in the heart of London.

A new all-day restaurant, bar and hideaway launched this November in Mayfair

Tucked away in a Mayfair mews, SILVA is a new day-tonight restaurant opened its doors this November.

Derived from the Latin word for “forest,” SILVA’s menu will evolve in harmony with the seasons, taking inspiration from across the Mediterranean all the way to Japan to deliver a modern restaurant for modern Londoners.

Founder Daria Grebenyuk and her experienced team have created an elegant space that will focus on a convivial atmosphere and warm hospitality at the heart of Bruton Place, a location known for its independent restaurants, retailers and galleries.

Serving breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner, SILVA boasts 91 covers across two floors and an outside terrace. On entering guests will be drawn in by the banquette seating which gently curves its way down the entirety of the space, where mixed woods and marble are offset by moss and pine green accents and muted tones to mimic the changing seasons.

The restaurant is joined on the first floor by an intimate snug bar and an impressive private dining room, ‘The Garden Room’, complete with a restored herringbone parquet floor and decorative foliage and flower castings adorning the walls.

The menus at SILVA are a manifestation of Founder Daria’s travels across various countries, savouring different foods and culinary traditions from Europe and beyond. Daria has worked closely with Head Chef, Slawomir Sawicki (Eric Chavot, Galvin at La Chapelle, Arts Club) to curate menus which bring together different influences and techniques but which at their core let the best of the seasons produce shine.

For breakfast, the options include light and healthy dishes and some signature brunch recipes. Diners can enjoy eggs of any style, from the indulgent gratinated crab and Gruyère omelette together with a selection of eggs simply poached and served alongside house-cured salmon. For those after something sweeter, there will be a selection of creative pastries, coconut and muscovado porridge with caramelised banana and blackberry jam, acai bowls and fluffy soufflé pancakes served with a white chocolate and lavender Chantilly.

The daytime menu will showcase a range of starters, raw dishes, seasonal salads, mains, and desserts. Notable offerings include the crispy fried egg served elegantly atop parmesan cream, the potato waffle topped with beef tartare and gently shaved winter truffle, and the baked Isle of Mull scallops with yuzu butter.

Come evening the menu will include dishes such as roast duck with coco beans, fennel and orange as well as seabass casserole inspired by Ristorante Pesce

Baracca in Forte dei Marmi, together with larger sharing plates such as line-caught turbot cooked on a robata grill and served with a wakame beurre blanc, or chateaubriand with wild mushrooms. Rounding off the menu is a refined selection of desserts from a creamy Basque cheesecake, chocolate pavé with coffee ice-cream to rum-roasted pineapple with coconut.

The front of house management team is led by GM Marco Piroli (The Ivy Club, St Regis Florence, Coya) and Peter Prescott (Boundary, Lutyens, Albion) is supporting Daria on all aspects of the project.

Termini ranked first with a final score of 75.11. Termini received its highest score of 10 for thenumber of hotel options, with 193, and the number of pizzerias rated four or higher in the area, with 65 in total.

Navona, Pantheon and Campo de’ Fiori place second, scoring 74.02. These areas are a must-visit for those who love pasta, scoring 10 for the number of restaurants rated four or higher known for serving pasta, with 196. However, for those on a budget, these areas might be worth avoiding – placing lowest in the top ten for the average price of a ‘good’ restaurant, with a score of 2.3.

Third is Monti, receiving a score of 65.99. Another essential visit for those looking for an authentic Italian pizza; the area scored top marks for the number pizzerias rated four or higher, with 65 in total.

Vaticano, Borgo and Prati place fourth, with an overall score of 61.13. The areas scored highest for their 96 pizzerias, scoring 8.83, followed by a 6.36 score for their 118 vegan-friendly restaurants.

Trastevere takes fifth place with a score of 54.88. The area scored well for all metrics relating to food, although it scored significantly low for thenumber of hotel options, with only 14 places to choose from.

Sixth is Nomentano, scoring 44.65. For those looking for good-quality authentic Italian food on a budget, look no further than Nomentano – while the area may not have dining options as other places, it scores 10 in terms of value, with an average of 1.83 ‘£’ signs on Tripadvisor (less £’s out of 5 signifies better value) for its restaurants on Tripadvisor.

Appio-Latino places seventh, receiving a score of 43.97

The highest scores in the area are for the number of pizzerias rated four or higher, and for value, receiving scores of 6 and 8.79, respectively.

Aurelio ranks eighth, with a score of 42.32. Much like Appio-Latino, Aurelio also received high scores for both the number of pizzerias rated for or higher, and value, with scores of 5.33 and 6.57, respectively. However, Aurelio scored much higher than the aforementioned for the number of hotel options, scoring 5.1, with 32 hotels in the area to choose from.

Ninth place is Trionfale, with a score of 39.09. Trionfale is a great destination for those seeking reasonably priced vegan food. The area scores well for both the number of vegan-friendly restaurants, and for value, with 3.07 and 6.11, respectively.

Rounding off the top ten is Aventino, scoring 33.88 Overall, Aventino received average scores across all metrics; however, it received the lowest score of 0 for the number of hotel options, with only ten to choose from in the whole neighbourhood.

Magdalena Petrusic, Travel Expert from Colosseum Tours & Tickets, commented on the findings:

“Rome’s culinary landscape has always been vast and varied, and the data in this study certainly emphasises that. From charming trattorias near the Colosseum serving authentic Roman dishes like Carbonara and Cacio de Pepe, to the more modern Trastevere district, serving up more international fusions, there’s something to cater for all palettes.”

Turks and Caicos is proving to be exceptionally popular with Caribbean visitors so far this year

Tourism in Turks & Caicos has experienced a remarkable first half of the year.

According to recent data, the Turks and Caicos Islands welcomed close to a million (998,854) air arrivals and cruise visitors in the first six months of 2024. Additionally, occupancy rates have surged to 87%, now the highest in the Caribbean region.

Wymara Resort + Villas – an independently-owned, ultra-luxurious Caribbean sanctuary – is seizing the moment with a series of strategic investments to continue to meet (and exceed) guest demand.

Having debuted the Caribbean’s first ocean pool in 2023, the resort is now introducing its first sixbedroom villas, and a new oceanfront restaurant at its private beach club. At the main resort, a newly configured one-bedroom penthouse available to book from now means that uninterrupted views of Grace Bay Beach are no longer the preserve of those on larger group or family holidays.

Located in the coastal residential region of Turtle Tail, on the south coast of Providenciales, a short sevenminute drive from the main resort is Wymara Villas + Beach Club. Renowned for offering some of the finest vistas on the island, this secluded property will soon launch three spectacular 6-bedroom villas.

The new residences will join the resort’s offering of 1, 4, and 5-bedroom modern-design masterpieces.

The first new villa will be completed in August and available soon for vacation bookings.

Featuring expansive living spaces, state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen, private infinity pools, direct ocean access, and six well-appointed bedrooms each with its own ensuite, these new villas will exude modern elegance and bespoke Caribbean design that maximises and celebrates the tropical environment.

With dedicated Villa Butler services, personalised culinary experiences, and access to all the amenities of the adjacent Sunset Cove Beach Club, home to the Caribbean’s first in-ocean pool and private beach, Wymara Villas is an unforgettable escape for families and groups seeking sleek design and seclusion.

Wymara owner Bruce Maclaren teased that a new 90 seat restaurant is also in the works for the Turtle Tail property.

“Our vision for Sunset Cove Beach is to create a dynamic new culinary experience where the Caribbean’s vibrant flavours and stunning ocean views converge,” says Bruce. “This stunning new venue is set to redefine seafront dining, offering guests an unforgettable journey through taste and sunset vistas, when we launch in early 2025.”

NEW PENTHOUSE DESIGN

Also new this summer, Wymara is introducing a One Bedroom Penthouse Suite, perfect for couples. At the main resort, a newly configured onebedroom penthouse available to book from now means that uninterrupted views of Grace Bay Beach are no longer the preserve of those on larger group or family holidays.

Set over 186m² and bathed in natural light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, Wymara’s new penthouse design seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living, with serene decor placing the focus firmly on the stunning white sands and crystal-clear waters beyond.

Top tips for practical sustainable dining

Discovering a world where every dish is a story about respecting nature, connecting with local producers and committing to a more sustainable future, is an exciting journey to commence.

A sustainable restaurant is, first and foremost, a restaurant that respects the seasonal nature of the produce served to customers. This applies to fruit and vegetables as well as meat and fish.

Chefs who run sustainable restaurants choose to use short supply food chains and make sure they waste as little as possible, while also being creative when reusing waste.

Sustainability in restaurants is more than just actions, it’s a philosophy. In a way, it’s about good citizenship. It is about asking questions, providing answers and making a difference to the environment we live in.

Permaculturist, Florence Battut, elaborates on this idea by agreeing that restaurants which promote sustainable food is a restaurant that does everything on a local level.

“I think it should reflect the region in which it is located,” she said.

“The restaurant must be connected to its local environment, the special features of the region, the characteristics of the land and the local producers, fishermen, breeders and arboriculturists. Their knowhow is just as invaluable as a chef’s, because a chef can only create a good menu if he has good produce.”

A sustainable restaurant is a restaurant where the chefs are aware of the work done by the people who cultivate the land and supply raw materials. This works to protect the diversity of our regions and support our producers, by showing respect for the environment, nature and all living species.

The benefits of a sustainable restaurant menu

There are many advantages to sustainable cuisine, not just for customers and chefs, but for the Earth itself. You can do this by using seasonal produce from short supply food chains, creating high-quality dishes with a real added value.

There is also an educational side, because you can pass on your knowledge and raise awareness on this topic. If you choose to offer sustainable cuisine, it’s easy to create a story with real and accurate information about where your produce comes from, how it’s farmed or reared, and also about the producers involved in each and every one of your produce.

In a way, you are creating new virtuous circles. This will help you to get closer not only to your customers, but also to your suppliers. If you’re committed to sustainable cuisine, you need to know the farmers you’re working with and what they produce. You have to do everything locally.

In summary, the key benefits are:

• Short supply chains.

• Higher quality dishes (fresher food).

• Educational/situational awareness.

• Economic (support local producers).

• Animal welfare (can choose farmers who are working locally and ethically).

• Reduce food waste, buy local, how to source and cook sustainably like a professional chef!

Cooking sustainably like a professional chef is simple. Start by choosing local shops, buy seasonally, reuse your fruit and veg peelings and make broth from your meaty left-overs.

Here’s a practical example:

When you buy bread, forget about supermarkets and chain stores, and go to your local baker.

What about filling your fridge? Ask around and see if there’s a market nearby. Once again, try to buy seasonal food as much as possible. Check out where the produce comes from and avoid stalls with strawberries or raspberries in winter.

The same goes for fish. Buy sustainable fish to support committed fishermen who love their job and respect the sea.

When you put on your apron, reuse your fruit and vegetable peelings. It’s not complicated, you just need to get used to it. But here again, it’s not just for show –they’re perfect for making sauces, powders or fermented drinks. And fish or meat leftovers are perfect for making nutrient-rich broths.

The hotel’s interior colour palette draws subtly on national references; the pale blue of the Saltire flag, the soft hues of the Craigleith sandstone, the earthy tones of the countryside visible from the rooms and finally the smoky browns that allude to the city’s affectionate nickname of ‘Auld Reekie’.

Enhancing Hotels Outdoor Spaces With Planters

Hotels main ambition is to make your guests stay comfortable and relaxing. Whether it is a local hotel with a three-star rating, or a five-star hotel, plants and greenery is more important than most realise.

It’s not just about which plants you choose, as the planters are just as important. When choosing plant pots, the colour, design and even texture all has to be matching in with the décor.

The lobby is the first place your guests are going to see, so making a long-lasting impression on them from the get-go, is easily done when they feel lost in nature, greenery and beautiful, elegant plants and planters.

A hotel lobby is the perfect place for medium to large plants, keeping the entrance bright and welcoming.

There is a variety of indoor plants to choose from such as Calathea, Gardenia, Chinese Evergreen, Snake Plants and Peace Lilys.

Not only does this make the overall space more welcoming but creates an aesthetically pleasing look as well as helping with keeping clean air flowing through.

Hotel corridors can also benefit from large planters as most corridors are dark and dull, plants instantly brings life back into the space as well as a colour, especially with the range of planters there are to choose from!

To see more high-end planters, please visit www.torcpots.com

Torc sculpt everything by hand from their studio in the Channel Islands creating beautiful pots and planters. Their one-off designs are beautifully crafted and made by hand to last a lifetime. They make unique distinctive statements for both home and commercial settings.

Working alongside a talented team of artisans this family run business really specialises in textures, scale and bespoke design. The design side of the business is well worth considering with landscape architects and garden designers appreciating the wealth of expertise this company has to offer. Torc are often commissioned to provide planter designs and outdoor furniture for both commercial and residential spaces.

Torc uses various products to reduce their carbon footprint such as recycled glass and bi products of the steel and power industries – reusing waste! The addition of these materials increases the overall strength of the product, decreases permeability and therefore water requirement.

When we are surrounded by so much that is mass produced there is a real appreciation for handcrafted objects created out of organic materials which appeal to our senses.

“We shape them by hand, layer by layer, enhanced by texture and finish until they take on their own unique form and because of this no two pots are ever quite the same”
