SERMON OUTLINE /
THE GIFT OF THE SABBATH: MARK 2:23-28
Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” // Mark 2:27-28
G RACE The Gift of Sabbath reminds us of God’s grace.
• The gift of Sabbath is a reminder that our God who created us has given us a picture of an abundant life—a life with a healthy rhythm of work and rest.
I DENTITY The Gift of Sabbath reminds us of our true identity.
• Sabbath rest reminds us that we are loved by him when we “do nothing” because spending time with God and those we love is not nothing—it is the most important something we can do.
F REEDOM The Gift of Sabbath reminds us of our freedom.
• We are not the victim of our busyness—we are the author of our busyness.
T IME The Gift of Sabbath reminds us that time is in God’s hands
• We have all of the time we need to do what God has called us to do.
Sabbath is a time for
• Rest
• Reflection
• Relationships
Do you feel that your life has a good rhythm of work and rest?
How might you take a step this week to open God’s gift of Sabbath?
“The Sabbath was to Time what the Temple was to Place. The Temple was where heaven and earth met, held together in a dangerous symbiosis, with the image-bearing humans standing at the fault line in worship and obedience. The Sabbath was where the Age to Come broke into the Present Age…again with the human beings standing at the threshold in a single moment of rest and celebration.” // N.T. Wright
