1 SAMUEL 3:1-10: KNOWING GOD ’ S VOICE IN THE NOISE
Gordon T. Smith begins his excellent book, The Voice of Jesus, by arguing that there are two questions that every Christian should be able to answer.
1. What is Jesus saying to you at this particular moment in your life?
2. How can you be confident that Jesus is speaking and not someone or something else?
The first question speaks to the practice of listening.
The second question speaks to the practice of discernment.
“When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”
John 10:4-5
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…”
1 John 4:1
There is no “technique” or “formula” for the practice of discernment. But there are some foundational truths for our encouragement in the story of Samuel.
1. God is patient in speaking to us
2. Listen to your life
3. Listen to others
4. Discern along the way
Discernment begins with Jesus’ invitation: “Follow me”.
Last week, our middle schoolers went to Camp Ducktown in Copperhill, Tennessee! At Ducktown, the students dove deeper into what it looks like to walk in faith with Jesus through our teachings, small group Bible studies, and worship. They also went whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and played paintball!
MILESTONES
Just as families keep in touch about joys and sorrows, our church family at Peachtree wants to do the same. During your prayers this week, we ask you to lift up these people to God.
