The Path

10 Commandments for our daily walk

Exodus 20:12

Do This. Don’t Do That.

The Ten Commandments are the most famous set of rules in history.

But what if our understanding of the Ten Commandments is, well, off the path?

What we in English refer to as the Old Testament Law, the Hebrews referred to as the Torah. In its original language, the Torah was understood not as a set of legal or moral prescriptions - do this, don’t do that - but as a relationship. Torah is really a directional word that alerts us how to pay attention to God’s purposes and promises and providences.

Instead of laws, as in a courtroom, consider the Ten Commandments as the top ten of a complete teaching guide from God. Its purpose is to keep us on the right path, and save us from our human tendency to wander off and get lost.

“Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” Psalm 119:35

**Life of the Congregation

On his way to university in 1657, Georg Neumark was robbed of all his possessions except his prayer book and a little money. When life looked very dark, with schooling out of the question, Neumark was offered a job as a tutor. He wrote, “On that very day, I composed this hymn to the honor of my beloved Lord….I certainly had cause enough to thank the divine compassion for such unlooked for grace.” Where has God shown you “unlooked for” grace? 4

*Call to Worship Pastor: My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. People: I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. Pastor: For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. ALL: Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.

Placement of the Bible Prayer of Confession Gracious and loving God, in this season of Lent we ask for the help of your Spirit as we seek to follow you in our homes and families. You have called each generation to declare your wonderful works to the next so that generations yet unborn will praise you. We confess that our family life is often fragmented, our schedules are too full, and our pace is too fast. We make room for church but seldom speak of God. Grant to us your mercy and power. Help parents to reflect your love to their children. Help children to respond to you as they honor and obey their parents. Pour out your grace upon us even now as we offer our silent prayers of confession . . . Assurance of God’s Forgiveness *Congregational Response Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.....................................................nettleton O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be; Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart: O, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above

God Be in My Head is a prayer from the 16th century, asking God to be in all our living.

Invitation to Prayer (10:00 & 11:15) God Be in My Head..........................................................................................John Rutter Reinhardt College Chamber Singers

God be in my head and in my understanding. God be in mine eyes and in my looking. God be in my mouth and in my speaking. God be in mine heart and in my thinking. God be at mine end and in my departing.

Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. He Never Failed Me Yet is one of the most popular gospel choruses of the last half century. No matter what the dangers, toils and snares, Jesus leads us out of them.

We walk, we walk the Lord’s road. We sing, we sing the Lord’s praise. We live, we live the Lord’s Word.

(10:00 & 11:15) He Never Failed Me Yet..................................................Robert Ray Reinhardt College Chamber Singers; Jonathan Parham, soloist

Chorus: I will sing of God’s mercy, Every day, every hour, He gives me power. I will sing and give thanks to Thee For all the dangers, toils and snares That He has brought me out. He is my God and I’ ll serve Him no matter what the test Trust and never doubt, Jesus will surely bring you out He never failed me yet.

I know God is able to deliver in times of storm And I know that He’ ll keep you safe from all earthly harm. One day when my weary soul is at rest I’m going home to be forever blessed Trust and never doubt Jesus will surely bring you out He never failed me yet. (Chorus)

Didn’t my God deliver Moses from King Pharoah? And didn’t He cool the fiery furnace For Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? When I think of what my God can do He delivered Daniel I know He will deliver you. Trust and never doubt Jesus will surely bring you out He never failed me yet. (Chorus)

GO IN GOD’S NAME This hymn text was written by Maltbie D. Babcock in 1901. While a pastor in Lockport, New York, Babcock liked to hike in an area called “the escarpment.” It is said those walks in the woods inspired these lyrics. The Truth About God

By William H. Willimon and Stanley M. Hauerwas Two popular authors consider not only what the Ten Commandments say about the people who observe them, but what they say about God. They are not some set of universal rules - they simply offer ways for a certain people to know a certain God - our God. Available in the Peachtree Bookstore and the Williams Center.

At Lent, we’re supposed to give something up. Every year, it’s the usual suspects: Soda. Alcohol. Sweets. Swearing. Social media. Fast Food. Chips. And of course the king of all Lenten sacrifices: Chocolate. Poor chocolate. The guilty anecdote to a stressful life. But does a chocolate abstinence program really help others? This year, we have some tasty advice:

Go ahead and eat the chocolate. Serve instead. Get connected with one of Peachtree’s 30 Days of Serving. w w w. p e a c h t r e e p r e s. o r g / 3 0 d a y s SUNDAY
