Lighting of the Candles Placing the Bible Prayer of Confession Merciful God, you have given us the gift of prayer and invited us to bring our lives before you with confidence. We confess today that prayer is often an afterthought in the ordinary rhythm of our days and weeks. You have told us to pray rather than worry, but still we choose to worry. You have promised to give us what is good, and yet we are slow to ask. Forgive us for living prayerless lives and restore our boldness in calling on you. Teach us to pray, often and expectantly. We begin by coming to you now with our silent confessions… Assurance of God’s Forgiveness Congregational Response*

We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace  arr. Moses Hogan

We shall walk in peace. We shall walk through the valley in peace. For Jesus Himself will be our leader. We shall walk through the valley in peace. We will meet our loved ones there. For Jesus Himself will be our leader. We shall walk through the valley in peace. There will be no trials there. For Jesus Himself will be our leader. We shall walk through the valley in peace.

The beautiful flowers in the Sanctuary this morning are given to the glory of God and in Loving Honor of: Dr. Mark Crumpler with grateful thanks by The Prayer Ministry Leadership Team

If your young child needs attention during worship, live broadcasts of the service are available in the Williams Center and the Mothers and Infants Room off of the Williams Center.

Every day we face choices: to tell the truth or lie, to cheat or remain faithful. We may want these to be minor decisions of little consequence—but they aren’t. There’s a lot more going on than meets the eye. What if our low stakes lives of spiritual mediocrity are a kind of dungeon? What if life is actually a great, cosmic struggle between good and evil—and each moment we are choosing between them? The good news is there’s an answer to the vague emptiness we feel. A victorious life is available to each one of us, but we have to take hold of weapons of war: “the full armor of God” described by Paul in Ephesians. All around us is the unseen spiritual world where untold legions of spiritual forces are playing out a cosmic battle for the honor and glory of God. The most important choice you can make is this: “Put on the whole armor of God.” Your very survival depends on it. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” —Ephesians 6:10–18
