And Can It Be was written by Charles Wesley, and first published in 1738. Charles wrote over 5500 hymns, which include Christ the Lord is Risen Today, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing. This hymn describes the wonder that fills our hearts when we consider the mercy that caused God to take on flesh and die in our place.

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried, He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen. *Congregational Response Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing..............................................................NETTLETON O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be; Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart: O, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.

** Life of the Congregation Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Offering Our Gifts His Eye is on the Sparrow............Charles H. Gabriel/arr. Ruth Elaine Schram Chancel Choir Audrey Holton, Soloist Kelly Via, Flute & Guang Wang, Cello

Why should I feel discouraged? Why should the shadows come? Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home, When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear, And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubt and fear. Though by the path He leads me, one step is all I can see. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, For His eye is on the sparrow, And I know He watches me.

*Hymn of Thanksgiving Holy, Holy, Holy (all singing).......................................................................................NICAEA H oly, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning, our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty. God in three Persons, blessed Trinity: Amen!

Listen to god’s word read and proclaimed Real Help for Real People: Telling The Next Generation.............................................Marnie Crumpler Executive Pastor Scripture: Psalm 78:4-7...................................................................Pew Bible, page 915

We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done. 5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, 6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. 7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. 4

In Matthew 10, as Jesus sent out his disciples, he told them not to be afraid - - every hair on our head is numbered. Just as the Father cares for the sparrows, even more He will care for you. Civilla Martin wrote these lyrics in 1905 based on that scripture.

CELEBRATE THE SACRAMENT The Great Thanksgiving Pastor: The Lord be with you. All:

And also with you.

Pastor:

Lift up your hearts.

All:

We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor:

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All:

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Pastor: It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O God our creator and redeemer. In your wisdom, you made all things and sustain them by your power. You formed us in your image to love and serve you, but we forgot your promises and abandoned your commandments. In your mercy, you did not reject us but still claimed us as your own. When we were slaves in Egypt you freed us, and led us through the waters of the sea. You fed us with heavenly food in the wilderness, and satisfied our thirst from desert springs. On the holy mountain you gave us your law to guide us in your way. You spoke through prophets, calling us to turn from our willful ways to new obedience and righteousness. You sent your only Son to be the way to eternal life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name: All:

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Pastor: You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. He took upon himself the weight of our sin and carried the burden of our guilt. In his dying and rising, you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

Words of Institution Distribution of the Bread (To symbolize our individual experience of God’s grace, please partake of the bread as it is served.) Distribution of the Cup (To symbolize our common experience together of God’s grace, please retain the cup until all have been served.) *Unison Prayer of Thanksgiving Gracious and loving God, you have made us one in the body of Christ, and nourished us at your table with holy food and drink. Thank you for feeding our hunger and relieving our thirst. Now send us into the world to do the work you have given us to do: to find the lost and lonely, to heal broken souls, to free prisoners, and to love in Jesus’ name. Grant us strength to persevere in resisting evil, and to proclaim in all we say and do your good news in Christ Jesus our Savior. Amen.

The text of this much loved hymn was written by John Newton, published in 1779 in his collection titled Olney Hymns. The rousing final stanza is by an unknown author; it first appeared as early as 1829 in the Baptist Songster, by R. Winchell, as the last stanza of the song Jerusalem My Happy Home.

REFLECTIONS ON THE PSALMS By C. S. Lewis

Lewis’s most extended discussion of Scripture! He wants his readers to admire the Psalms as great works of poetry, so he explains how parallelism works. He also stresses the importance of the Psalms in singing and worship, how they provide words for our prayers and display an obvious “gusto” for God. Available in the Peachtree Bookstore and the Williams Center.
