Real HELP FOR Real PEOPLE Psalm 121

Faith:

Road Advisories

welcom e to Pe achtree Presby terian Church Where everyone is welcome, nobody is perfect, and anything is possible.

Today’s message Faith: Road Advisories Scripture: Psalm 121 Preacher: Vic Pentz at 8:45 & 10:00, Bryan Dunagan at 11:15 a.m. In all three services this morning, we celebrate the sacrament of baptism. Baptism of infants is one way we look to the future. As we welcome these children into our fellowship, we also pledge that we will nurture their faith in the hope that they will one day profess their own faith in Jesus Christ.

VBS 2013 This past week we hosted over 850 children and their families for our annual VBS. This year’s theme, Going Global With God in Liberia, focused on God’s work and our participation in the country of Liberia. Let’s celebrate this wonderful opportunity to nurture the faith of these families. “I know the plans I have for you,” announces the Lord. “I want you to enjoy success. I do not plan to harm you. I will give you hope for the years to come.” - Jeremiah 29:11

The text of this hymn is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi (11821226). It is based on his “Canticle of the Sun,” composed when he was nearly blind and unable to endure daylight. The hymn reminds us that all things exist for the glory and praise of And Can It Be was God. written by Charles Wesley, and first published in 1738. Charles wrote over 5500 hymns, which include Christ the Lord is Risen Today, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing. This hymn describes the wonder that fills our hearts when we consider the mercy that caused God to take on flesh and die in our place.

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried, He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen. ** Life of the Congregation Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Offering Our Gifts Nearer, My God, to Thee.........................................................................John Gardner Chancel Choir Michael Kurth, Bass

Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee! E’en though it be across that raiseth me; Still all my song shall be, “Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee.”

Though, like the wanderer, the sun gone down, Darkness be over me, my rest a stone; Yet in my dreams I’d be Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee.

There let the way appear steps unto heaven; All that thou sendest me in mercy given; Angels to beckon me Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee.

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise, Out of my stony griefs Bethel I raise; So by my woes to be Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee.

Or if, on joyful wing, cleaving the sky, Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly; Still all my song shall be. Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee.

*Hymn of Thanksgiving Holy, Holy, Holy (all singing).......................................................................................NICAEA H oly, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning, our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty. God in three Persons, blessed Trinity: Amen!

The old hymn tune for Nearer My God to Thee has a slow, grief-laden melody and became associated with the tragedy of the Titanic, after it was played by the ship’s band as it sank. This new, calypso-like tune gives a sense of defiant joy in the face of sadness, a certainty of God’s presence and a stubborn reliance on staying near to Him.

Listen to god’s word read and proclaimed Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing was written by Robert Robinson, age 17, who hung out with a notorious gang in London in the mid 1700’s. While attending an evangelistic meeting intent on making fun of the “poor, deluded Methodists,” Robinson ended up professing Christ as his Savior. What does God’s grace mean to you?

where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD watches over you— the LORD is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; 8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. 2

Answering God by Eugene Peterson

Eugene H. Peterson speaks to Christians who realize the necessity for prayer and yearn for it but who find their prayer unconvincing and unsatisfying. Addressing the causes of this dissatisfaction, Answering God offers guidelines for using the Psalms as dynamic tools for prayer. Available in the Peachtree Bookstore and the Williams Center.
