Amen.

Offering Our Gifts  Stephen McCluskey, soloist I’d Rather Have Jesus  arr. Kay Hawkes Goodyear I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold; I’d rather be His than have riches untold; I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands; I’d rather be true to His nail-pierced hand Than to be the king of a vast domain, And be held in sin’s dread sway; I’d rather have Jesus than anything This world affords today.

In the last five decades, the most printed and sold book in the world is the Bible —nearly four million copies. Walk into any bookstore or surf any book website, and you will find all sorts of bibles. Bibles with black leather covers and red hardback covers. Open the covers and you see more differences. Bibles printed in different languages and different translations. Bibles with large print letters and Bibles with red letters. Did you ever wonder who decided to make Bibles with the words of Jesus printed in red?

PENNY HILL

EXECUTIVE PRESBYTER, GREATER ATLANTA PRESBYTERY

Reverend Penny Hill is the Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. She has been with the presbytery for seven years. Penny has spent much of her ministry in family ministry at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. She has authored and produced 3 Christian Education videos on parenting, biblical literacy for children and classroom management in the church. Penny’s husband, Richard, is also a Presbyterian minister and she has 2 young adult sons in Atlanta..

In 1899, a magazine editor named Louis Klopsch had an idea. While composing an editorial, he read Luke 22:20: “This cup is the new testament in my blood, which I shed for you.” Seeing the symbolism of blood, he thought, ‘what if there was a Bible with the words spoken by Jesus printed in red ink?’ Since that eureka moment, generations of Christians have had the privilege of reading the red letters of Jesus’ words in stark relief. The red letters beg a question:

Who is this Jesus?

When we look at the red letter Jesus, we’re confronted by a man whose words, life, and death force us to decide: do we believe he is who he says he is? Will we let his words change our life? And most importantly, will we follow Him?

New sermon series begins today.

celebrate the sacrament The Communion Prayer Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Pastor: Let us gather around the table with the offering of bread and drink upon it and the promise of the Living Christ among us. This is the welcome table of God for the world, where all who seek the mercy of God in Christ and all who seek to be at peace with their neighbor are embraced. Come, for we are invited into this holy mystery. People: We are ready! Pastor: Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. All who come to me shall not hunger, and all who believe in me shall never be thirsty. People: We are hungry and thirsty. O Lamb of God, we come! Pastor: Gracious and loving God, in fulfillment of Christ’s promise, you poured out the Holy Spirit upon the chosen disciples and filled the church with power. We give you thanks for the gift of your Spirit, kindling our faith, leading us into all truth, working in the church to make us faithful disciples, and empowering us to proclaim by word and deed the gospel of Jesus Christ to every nation. All honor and glory belongs you, O God —Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Words of Institution/Distribution of the Bread & Cup To symbolize our individual experience of God’s grace, please partake of the bread* as it is served. To symbolize our common experience together of God’s grace, please retain the cup until all have been served. * The communion bread was made gluten-free but not cut in a dedicated facility.

Unison Prayer of Thanksgiving Gracious and loving God, you have made us one in the body of Christ and nourished us at your table with holy food and drink. Thank you for feeding our hunger and relieving our thirst. Now send us into the world to do the work you have given us to do: to find the lost and lonely, to heal broken souls, to free prisoners, and to love in Jesus’ name. Grant us strength to persevere in resisting evil and to proclaim in all we say and do your good news in Christ Jesus our Savior. Amen.

“I am the bread of life. All who come to me shall not hunger, and all who believe in me shall never be thirsty.” —John 6:35
