MARTIN A CONTEMPORARY ORATORIO
Libretto by Rev. Dr. Ja A. Jahannes Music by Ja Jahannes & Dr. Stephen Michael Newby
Welcome & Opening Prayer
PART I: FOUNDATION 1. Orchestra: Toccata for Peace 2. Choir: My Peace I Bring to You My peace I bring to you, that you might have peace My peace I leave with you, that you might have peace. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. This peace I leave with you, that you might have peace.
3. Choir: As We Are, We Come, Lord As we are, we come, Lord, in prayer bowed down to Thee Weary souls traveled far, Lord, that you will set us free. As we are, we come, Lord, in search of peace in Thee. This is our fervent prayer, Lord: Thou wilt our refuge be. As we are we come in search of Thee, This is our prayer, Lord: we come to Thee This is our plea: we come to Thee In search of freedom, we come, Lord! As we are, we come, Lord. To your throne of grace: set us free! As we are we come, Lord, poor wretched souls to see To your throne of grace, Lord, in search of liberty!
4. Solo: I Shall Move Upon the Land I shall move upon the land, tribulation and trials shall be, And everything will be changed. How long can they run from me? My people shall be free.
5. Solo: I, Lord I must love You, heaven knows I can I must love You for I am the soul of man I must see You, heaven knows I can I must see You in the Father’s hand I, Lord… Oh I, Lord. I, Lord, am an instrument of Your peace, I, Lord, am a servant of Your joy, I, Lord, am a witness to Your Word. I, Lord, I am my brother’s face, I, Lord, am a grain of sand, I, Lord, I am in Your hand, I, Lord… Oh I, Lord.
6. Orchestra: Fanfare for Struggle 7. Choir: Freedom Train The sound of trampling feet on the broken promise streets, The sound of weary men who will not retreat, The sound of hurting hearts where history does meet: The sound comes hurling forth. Refrain: Freedom train, the freedom train! Bound for freedom, bound, bound! The courage of the small, buoyed up in song The fear of the weak shared among the throng, The passion of the cause to right the harm of wrong: The sound comes hurling forth. Refrain The eyes of the watching crowd, filled with tears, The pain of the marchers, weighted by the years, The sound of drumming feet, calming all their fears: The sound comes hurling forth. Refrain
PART II: TRIAL 8. Narration: Overseer of the Dream 9. Solo: I Must Carry the Gospel Just like Paul, from the roadside to the soulside I must carry the gospel Trumpet loud and trumpet clear, for all the world to hear Just like Paul, from the jailhouse to the White House I must carry the gospel. Drum it deep, drum it clear, for all the world to hear Just like Paul, persecuted, mocked, and scorned I must carry the Gospel. Jesus’ gospel, for all the world to hear.
10. Chamber Chorale: On and On, We Keep Marching 11. Solo: The Waters Will Wash Away the Sins I will not hear your songs, I will not delight in you For you have made a mockery before my golden throne. You praised me for forty years, when need of me you had I’ve watched you upon the battlefield: you made me sad. Both day and night your sins are in my ear, It is all I’ve ever had… ’tis all I ever hear.
12. Chamber Chorale: I Can’t Sit By I can’t sit by while injustice reigns, I can’t sit by despite the gains, I cannot stop until I’m through: separate but equal was never true. Somebody please, O please, I can’t sit by. I can’t sit by while it’s still night; I can’t sit still, wrong is right I cannot stop until I’m through: separate but equal was never true. Somebody please, O please, I can’t sit by.
PART III: TRIBULATION 13. Solo & Choir: I Bear the Marks I bear the marks, the marks of Jesus; from my God I will not hide. Doubt may drown me like a river, but I shall rise above the tide. On my body the marks of Jesus, in my life a piercing thorn, In my path a killing cross, on my head a bloody crown. Refrain: I will carry this heavy burden, I will carry this heavy load Do not weep for my sorrow, I will walk this winding road. If I rest, I’ll have no pleasure, at my end a starry crown It shall cover the marks of Jesus in whose bosom I am bound. Refrain
14. Solo: I Get Tired Sometimes I get tired sometimes, Oh heaven, I get tired sometimes. I must renew my soul, O Jesus, I must renew my soul I get weary sometimes, my burdens are great. I must renew my soul, O Jesus, I must renew my soul.
15. Solo & Chamber Chorale: Never Turn Back What would have happened if a Daniel had stopped at the Lion’s den and never gone in? What if Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego stopped at the fiery furnace and never gone in? What if Jonah hadn’t struggled more, straight down to the ocean floor in the belly of the whale? No, no, never turn back! No, no, Martin, never turn back!
16. Solo: Woman in the Crowd Woman in the crowd, her soul gone mad, world imperfect still She had my heart in sight of the knife of affliction, like grist for the grinding mill. Love in the crowd, its face before me, in a world imperfect still. Love had my heart in sight with a firm conviction, For it was surely my Savior’s will. I thank God for His shield, I thank God for my soul, I thank God for His perfect will in a world imperfect still.
17. Solo & Choir: Anchor My Soul Anchor my soul, Lord, anchor my soul. Deep in the heart of me, I cry “Holy.” I can search this life in the company of men And never know the joy and peace You give within. Anchor my soul in Your word. Deep in the heart of me, I cry “Holy.” When I am lonely and my days are cast down, Anchor my soul in Your word. Deep in the heart of me, I cry “Holy.” When day betrays me and the nights are cold I thank You, Lord, for my dear soul: Oh thank You, thank You for my soul. Anchor my soul. You hold me up on solid ground. Deep in the heart of me, I cry “Holy.” On Thee I lean, on Thee I stand. All other ground is sinking sand. I am anchored in Your word. Deep in the heart of me, I cry “Holy.” Where I am weak, Thou art strong. You are my shield from hurt and harm. Anchor my soul.
18. Solo: What Kind of People Worship Here? Refrain: What kind of people worship here? Who is your God? You better hold onto the truth, my child: Oh Lordy, who is your God? The greatest treason is to worship without reason in this house of pain. While the angels sing a bad refrain That men have so abandoned Him. Refrain The lesson is to look in your welcome book Within your hearts of grief to see that blindness is a thief That men have so abandoned Him. Refrain
19. Solo & Chamber Chorale: Beloved Community The deep groans of passionate yearning, the tender spirit of our refrain, Purest impulse of humanity. For the God of this whole world is patient with us yet And hands must join to celebrate Destiny. Refrain: Beloved community shines brightest when we must sit in Harmony Beloved community shines brightest around the tent of truth. In the afternoon of our peace, When we have forgotten the small sorrows of a daunting youth And evening paints a portrait, Oh we can bring our gifts to the altar In the colors of a love Supreme.  Refrain We can never lose our way, we can never fail or falter Beloved community is our dream.
20. Solo: Lift Your Brother Up Lift your brother up, lift your sister up, Let love fill your cup, lift your brother up. Lift your family up, lift your country up, Let love fill the land, give love a helping hand. Lift your brother up, lift your sister up, Let love be your joy, let love set you free.
PART IV: MARTYRDOM 21. Solo: When You Have Done the Best that You Can Do When you have done the best you can do, When you have lent a helping hand, been a soldier of the band Then you have done, done the best you can do. When you have gone all the way through the trials of the day Then you have done the best you can do. When you have been true, to you and your brothers, too, Then you have done the best you can do.
22. Solo: We Knew He Would Die We knew that he would die, but how dare it be so soon, His life was so full, he gave it all to You. Out in front of the march, O how lonely it could be The faces of the marchers, lining streets like a sea. He knew he would die, they could not see It is the dream that he dreamed, a dream that can still come true, A dream so bright that he leaves it for you. Let it shine in the winter, let it grow in the spring Let it be a gospel of love that, in time, the world will sing. Let it go ahead of the faces, let it fly above the crowd For he’s still in the march: we must sing it loud. We knew that he would die, but how dare it be so soon, He gave it all to You, his life was so full, with so much to do.
23. Narration: This Is How He Loved 24. A ll: His Song Is Singing Still Singing his song: “We shall overcome,” His song is singing still. In Argentina, in Ireland’s place, in nations great and small, In Tiananmen Square, his song is singing still. The song of the martyr is heard: “We shall overcome someday.” His song is singing still. Where people rise up and will not be oppressed, Throwing off their shackles and facing their distress, The song of the martyr is heard. In the textbook of the children, in the intellectual tomes, On the avenues and boulevards, on the walls in many homes. “We shall overcome” is the anthem of the world: We shall overcome someday.
