ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME Prelude Choral Introit Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light J. S. Bach Break forth, O beauteous, heavenly light, And usher in the morning; Ye shepherds, shrink not with affright, But hear the angel’s warning. This Child, now weak in infancy, Our confidence and joy shall be, The power of Satan breaking, Our peace eternal making. Prayer of Confession Eternal God, we find ourselves in the midst of a world that is hurting and confused. We acknowledge that you call us to participate in the reconciliation of the world to yourself, but we have selfishly chosen to go our own way. Forgive us for the ways in which our silence has drowned out the call to justice. Invade the dark places of our nation, and even our world, with the light of your truth. Have mercy on us, O God, and help us to walk in the path of your righteousness. By your Spirit, grant that we might be faithful witnesses of your salvation until the Prince of Peace returns in final victory and establishes his kingdom for all eternity. Hear now our silent confession.…

Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a season of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus on Christmas. Advent candles help us keep watch for the coming of Jesus. The first Advent candle, which we light this morning, reminds us of the hope promised by the Old Testament prophets.
