Small town, great experiences Loviisa, an idyllic old port town between Porvoo and Kotka, is less than an hour’s drive east of Helsinki. The Swedish King Adolf Fredrik was very fond of the town and named it after his wife, Queen Lovisa Ulrika.

The coastal town of Loviisa has a rich history. The bilingual town has a remarkable main square surrounded by 19th century stately stone houses and immediately next to the centre, you will find the old town districts with their wooden houses, as well as gravel and cobblestone streets. On the western side, you will find the bold neo-gothic Church, while fortresses built in the 18th century are on the eastern side. The sea stretches all the way to the town centre. The Laivasilta area is related to the sailing history of the region and is characterised by its red salt warehouses, making it a popular area for meetings and events during summers. Loviisa has nearly 16,000 inhabitants and it offers a wide range of cultural sites, rich natural beauty and plenty of activities. Only a short distance from the Loviisa town centre, you can admire manors and craftsmen’s workshops in the area of the Strömfors Iron Works. The special exhibition of the Loviisa Maritime Museum held in the summer of 2014 presents acrylic works and oil paintings with nautical themes on old sail canvas by TH Norling of Turku. He depicts ships in the waters and ports where the ships sailed or moored. The paintings are more than just pictures of ships; they give insight into maritime history.
In 1745 the town was granted licence to export and import goods. Laivasilta had 50 salt warehouses loaded with imported goods, such as salt, tobacco, spices etc.
You can follow classical boat sailing at Laivasilta: the Suolakuppi competition on Thursdays August 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th and the Äyskäri competition on Saturday September 6th.

Laivasilta – the Center of Summer Life The sea dominates life in Loviisa during the four seasons of the year. This is why this beautiful town with its restaurants and events attracts visitors from both near and far. The wooden salt warehouses, which have been turned into restaurants or spaces that host art exhibitions and small shops, give Laivasilta its historical atmosphere. The restaurants are open from May 1st to the end of September and there are events almost weekly. The sea has affected the history and trade of this port town, as well as the income of its citizens. The Maritime Museum, located at Laivasilta, presents the rich sailing history of the region. The guest harbour has 55 berths, water, electricity, a fuel station, a recycling point, a septic tank exhauster, post box and an internet connection. It is possible to go to the sauna, take a shower, do laundry and dry up the laundry in the service building. The Loviisa guest harbour is known for its authentic and romantic atmosphere. The splendid Österstjernan packet yacht has been the highlight of Loviisa Laivasilta since 2006. Österstjernan is a replica of a sailing ship, which sailed between Loviisa and Stockholm in the 19th century. The original Österstjernan was built in Pietarsaari between 1813 and 1814. The current Österstjernan is based on the original ship documents and on a painting dating back to the 1820s.

The deep, dark lakes and beautiful river landscapes and rills of Loviisa also attract visitors. You can set out by yacht, motorboat or a plain rowing boat. Along the waters of Lovisa, you will find dozens of fantastic recreational sites that tempt you to go ashore; there are sandy beaches, camping areas and campfire sites. For instance, on the islands Lilla Rövarn, Hautasaari, Ruutikellarisaari, Kråkholmen and Dunkahäll, there are no holiday houses at all. An interesting site to visit is Harudd, which is surrounded by nature reserves.

When going by boat out to sea, you must take into consideration the protected nesting areas of birds. The shores of Loviisa attract fishermen. Companies specialized in guided fishing trips operate in the area and they customize their trips according to the visitors’ needs (see page 40). Other group activities, meals and sauna can be combined with the fishing trips. The area also offers accommodations to top off your fishing trip. 7

A Leisure Trip to the Historical Sea Fortress of Svartholma For more information on services at Svartholma please contact: Loviisa Tourist Office, Karlskronabulevardi 8 tel. +358 (0)19 555 234 info@loviisa.fi, www.visitloviisa.fi
The sea fortress of Svartholma, located at the entrance to Bay of Loviisa, is a sister fortress to Suomenlinna in Helsinki. They belong to the same defence chain of fortresses. The construction of Svartholma started in 1748 according to plans made by Colonel Augustin Ehrensvärd. Most of the work was carried out in the 1750s. The Swedish command ended in 1808 when Svartholma surrendered almost without resistance to Russia. During the Crimean War in 1855 an English squadron blasted the fortress and it was left as it was. Starting in the 1960s, it has been restored under the supervision of the National Board of Antiquities. Svartholma is a popular visiting destination for the whole family. You can get there on your own boat as well as on booked or scheduled boat services. Guided walking tours are available on the island. Free berths, exhauster for septic tanks, waste points and campfire sites are available for guests. 9

Ehrensvärd’s trail
Beautiful and historically interesting Ehrensvärd’s trail starts from the fortresses Rosen and Ungern. The fascinating nature trail, approximately two kilometres long, offers a unique chance to find out about the early stages of fortress building, from stone hammering to the 18th century fortress. In addition to the interesting construction history, visitors can admire the rich local flora and birdlife along the walk. Ehrensvärd’s trail is well marked. The starting points are the Sports Pavilion (Urheilutie) and Bastion Ungern (Ungernintie). The map is on the info board. Print the map at www.loviisa.fi/ fi/palvelut/liikuntajaulkoilu/ liikuntapaikatjaalue/ ehrensvardinpolku or you can also pick it up at the Tourist Office.
Genuine feeling of bygone days at Bastion Ungern.
The History of Fortresses and Brave Soldiers When heading for Loviisa centre from the east, the first sites you will encounter are the grand Ungern and Rosen fortresses. They were built in the 1750s to protect the town. The renovated Ungern is a popular venue for concerts, events and plays. Loviisa also offers other interesting fortifications and buildings built during the fortress era, for instance the Commandant’s House built in 1755. Nowadays the Loviisa Town Museum is located in the Commandant’s House. In Ahvenkoski there are redoubts dating back to the 1700s. These fortifications were built during the Swedish era to protect the border check point at the Kymijoki River next to the King’s Road. Kymijoki River was the border of Sweden and Russia 17431808. The first shots of the Finnish War 1808–1809 were fired on February 21st in 1808, when the Russian soldiers crossed the border in Ahvenkoski. A rare arch bridge, Savukoski Bridge, is also located in Ahvenkoski. You will reach the area through Pyhtää. 11
A church in the middle of the street
Visitors can not miss the bold neo-gothic church in Loviisa, since the impressive building is located at the western gateway of the city centre. Loviisa Church was built in 1863–1865 and it has served as a road church for many years. At the Loviisa Church the visitos will be greeted by a large Christ sculpture raised in the center of the altar. The oldest attraction of the church is Mikael Agricola’s bible dating back to 1642. It is the first complete bible in Finnish. You can admire the church Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m.–4 p.m. on June 9th–August 10th. Mass on Sundays in Finnish at 10 a.m. and in Swedish at 12 noon, Brandensteininkatu 2, tel. +358 (0)44 722 9200, www.loviisanseurakunta.fi

The surroundings of Loviisa Square are architecturally unique. Instead of supermarkets, it is surrounded by 19th century stone buildings.
CEMETERIES Among others, the writer Runar Schildt and relatives of the composer Jean Sibelius have been buried at the old Evangelical Lutheran cemetery. The new Evangelical Lutheran cemetery was opened in 1935. The Orthodox cemetery includes a small chapel, a chasovnya. The cemeteries are situated close to each other, on both sides of Myllyharju Ridge.
Historic Buildings and Neo-Gothic Boldness Loviisa is known for its peaceful small town character. On the square, you can experience the relaxing atmosphere that also continues in the charming and historical lower part of the town. Loviisa is a fascinating destination for architecture lovers. The central square is surrounded by 19th century stone buildings. The Loviisa Town Hall reminds one of the contemporary House of Nobility in Helsinki, both designed by architect Georg Chiewitz. We can be grateful to architect Georg Chiewitz for the 19th century view. Thanks to Elmar Badermann, the German born city architect of Loviisa, the Old Town and the historical lower district were kept almost intact. He was a strong-headed man, who saved the town from most planning mistakes in the wild 1970s. Several Neo-Romantic buildings, such as the Swedish upper secondary school “Lovisa Gymnasium by Magnus Schjerfbeck represent more modern architecture. The Bus Station, which represents later functionalism, is also a true pearl. 13

Become Charmed by Old Buildings The historical private houses in Loviisa date back over a hundred years. They open their doors to the public on August 30th–31st during the 10th Historical Houses of Loviisa event. The theme of the anniversary is 1700’s – the foundation of the Loviisa town in 1745 and its history as part of the Kingdom of Sweden until 1809. The Historical Houses of Loviisa also offers the public fascinating gardens, interesting courtyards, antiques and collections, an exhibition of contemporary art, flea markets and many private flea markets in gardens as well as ITU-tori, the producer market for local and organic food. The Historical Houses of Loviisa has in fact become the largest public event in eastern Uusimaa and it has been awarded several prizes and recognitions. The renovation and traditional building event also includes An expert seminar starring Panu Kaila on “wooden construction durability and energy savings from the 1700s to the 2000s”. The seminar is in Finnish. During the Open Gardens in Loviisa event, private gardens open their gates to visitors. Along the route, there are many different gardens: a romantic rose garden, a lush produce garden, a town garden with cobblestones, a classic topiary garden, and a still pond with wetland plants. Ask for advice, exchange your views with others and bask in the beauty of the gardens. 19

Revival of the Pearl of the Spa PERIOD Another significant renovation project that was concluded in 2013 is The House of Alm, which houses the Loviisa Art Centre. The House of Alm organises different exhibitions and shows and also has an art rental shop. At The House of Alm, you can rent exhibition spaces and other facilities. The unique Kappelinpuisto park plans were marked by the symmetry and circular themes of the Baroque period on maps from the 1700s, but on the maps from the 1800s you can already see freeform paths and planting characteristic of the English garden. The park became a centre of social life thanks to the Kappeli restaurant and the spa. The park reached its prime during Spa period of Loviisa, until the spa burned down in the 1930s.

Restaurant Kappeli was a popular dance restaurant for many years, but it eventually became rundown and later closed. The restaurateur and master painter Airi Kallio took on the Kappeli restoration and brought the restaurant from oblivion to prosperity. Today there are events at the Kappeli throughout the summer months. The sound of live chamber music can be heard again in the park and the restaurant world of Loviisa is one player richer. It is easy to relax in the historical setting of the Kappeli and its park. It’s the perfect location for an afternoon tea or dinner. Just let time go by and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

Historical buildings at the Strömfors Iron Works.
The Unique Setting of the Strömfors Iron Works The governor of Uusimaa and Turku province, Johan Creutz, founded the iron works in the westernmost junction of the Kymijoki River in 1698. Strömfors Iron Works got its name in 1744, when Jacob Forsell and Anders Nohrström acquired the iron works. In 1790, the iron works got a new manager, the 31-year-old Virginia af Forselles, who managed Strömfors Iron Works for almost 60 years. A large part of the well-kept environment and buildings currently on display at the iron works are from this period.

Climbing at Huuhkajavuori, tossing at Hiekkaharju Nearby lakes Särkjärvi and Kukuljärvi offer a great opportunity to refresh after climbing.
Loviisa offers a wide range of fun activities both outdoors and indoors. But did you know that there are also great climbing areas and one of the best 18-hole frisbee golf courses in southern Finland? Both of Loviisa’s climbing rocks are located in Ruotsinpyhtää: Huuhkajavuori, which is near the Kukuljärvi recreation area and Haukkakallio, which is close to the sandy beach of Särkjärvi. The Huuhkajavuori climbing routes have upper anchors and most of the routes are bolted. The routes are short, but you may find some of them challenging. The other climbing area, Haukkakallio, is located approximately three kilometres from Huuhkajavuori. It is a large uniform cliff which offers 105 routes. The routes are maintained by the association Släbi ry, which also organises annual rock climbing courses to anyone interested. You can play frisbee golf to the south of the town centre. An 18-hole frisbee golf oasis is located at the Valko sand ridge; the route takes you through the forest and across the beautiful hilly and rugged landscape of the sandy ridge. Children, adolescents and adults can practise frisbee throwing, which requires precision. Frisbee golf is one of the best ways to relax and spend time together outdoors. 27

Rootsinpyhtää Bluegrass & Rendezvous at the Strömfors Iron Works on June 6th–8th
The festival founded in 1988 brings the best foreign and Finnish bluegrass bands to town, who together with history aficionados recreate the life of the European immigrants who took this music to America. The Strömfors Iron Works is for the 27th time the perfect setting for the festival. The European immigrants took their folk music to America where it developed into “bluegrass” influenced by blues, gospel as well as other influences. The journey into the roots of bluegrass just feels right in the original buildings of the 18th and 19th century iron works. The historical atmosphere is ideal and you won’t need a lot of imagination to envision the people from northern Europe who decided to travel overseas. Welcome to the American musician and traditions festival where you can experience the atmosphere of the times when grandpa left for America! The camp of historical reenactment is open on Sat June 7th at 2 p.m.–6 p.m. Bluegrass concert on Sunday June 8th at 1 p.m. at Ruotsinpyhtää Church. Events The King Comes to Loviisa
July 5th–6th, 300 years since the times of wrath and persecution
When King Adolph Frederick visited Loviisa in 1752 the times of wrath and persecution were no more, and instead, the “noble peace and freedom during the peace of Turku” had taken hold. The border between Sweden and Russia was at Ahvenkoski Ruotsinpyhtää. It had been 40 years since the Russians had invaded the Loviisa region, then Pernaja. The occupation was terribly hard on the residents, who fled into the forests and buried their possessions, including Pernaja’s church bells, which have never been found. Swedish and Russian troops marched down the great coastal road, and plundered the people and fought the land. Approximately 7,000 Russian soldiers camped at Ryssänsaari in Pernaja. The soldiers tore down buildings in the region in order to get firewood and construction material for their barracks. Carolean general C.G. Armfeldt and other soldiers of the Swedish King Charles XII backed down and then lost after the conquering forces of Tsar Peter the Great took control of the regions of Finland. The King Comes to Loviisa event takes you back to the summer of the Greater Wrath 300 years ago. The Good Citizens of Loviisa reenact scenes and tell stories relating to the “times of misfortune, danger and tragedy, the time of God’s wrath” on Sunday July 6th at 2 p.m. in different parts of Loviisa centre. The 1700s weekend begins on Saturday July 5th with a handicraft market at Aleksanterinpiha (Aleksanterinkatu 8) from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. King Adolph Frederick will visit the market at 12 noon. This is the 17th King Comes to Loviisa event, which is organised by the association Good Citizens of Loviisa. For more information: The Good Citizens of Loviisa, tel. +358 (0)44 565 1011 Loviisa Tourist Office, tel. +358 (0)19 555 234, www.visitloviisa.fi

The Loviisa Sibelius Festival September 4

At the Loviisa Sibelius Festival, you can enjoy the very best of chamber music. In his youth, the composer Jean Sibelius spent several summers in Loviisa. The sun, the sea, summer and light filled him with impressions that were to inspire him for the rest of his life. This is also the frame in which international artists – and the festival audience – interpret Sibelius. The Loviisa Sibelius Festival is characterised by its warm, youthful atmosphere.
