The coastal Loviisa
is the best
small town in Finland! Loviisa, founded in 1745, has an interesting history. The town features fabulous town architecture, an inviting guest harbour and a unique feeling created by historical buildings, blooming gardens and a compact town centre. Pictorial countryside, beautiful archipelago, old Strömfors Iron Works milieu and versatile outdoor life opportunities will optimise your visit. And of course the children will also enjoy themselves in this home town of children’s Jill and Joy (Onneli and Anneli) movies. All this you can find along the E18 highway, less than an hour’s drive from Helsinki and within easy reach from Porvoo, Kotka and Kouvola. Visitors and inhabitants receive services in both domestic languages. The Loviisa-dwellers are the friendliest along the south coast of Finland, wishing their guests warmly welcome.

Horses, cows, pigs and whatever other animals. The very best travel experiences for free here in the countryside! #loviisa #moogoesthecow
Hey we are having fun, next time you’ll come along! The seawater was no warmer than +12 Centigrade, but the archipelago is awesome. The Svartholma Sea Fortress is like Fort Suomenlinna in Helsinki, only smaller. #loviisa #geocache
What facilities for outdoor life! Hiking, biking, canoeing … you name it … in an epic old iron works milieu! #eventhedoglikesit #strömforsironworks 3
Just like in the old times!
Wooden houses
& cobblestone streets The historical lower part of town by the seaside is one of the most uniform 18th century wooden town sections in Finland. Cobblestones, sandy alleys, sheltered courtyards and bright-coloured facades make you smile. Loviisa has the 1970s town architect Elmar Badermann to thank for preserving the lower town plan, town structure and the valuable old buildings as an intact whole.

Loviisa church
Windmill
Kukkukivi tower
The imposing neo-gothic church in the centre of Loviisa was finished in 1865. The red-brick church was designed by the architect G.T. Chiewitz and built in 1862–1865 after the previous wooden church was destroyed in a town fire in 1855. Some artefacts could be rescued from the old church and put on display at the present one, e.g. the old altar piece and crucifix, as well as the clock and the brass crown in the sacristy.
The windmill is a beautiful sight on top of the Myllyharju ridge, about 200 metres from the church. According to lore, there used to be ten mills on the ridge up until the end of the 19th century. The present restored windmill was brought there in 1926.
From the beautiful nationalromantic Kukkukivi you can enjoy a panorama view over the Bay of Loviisa. The tower was designed by architect K. Hjelt in 1906, as part of Loviisa’s history as a spa town. The visitors to the spa took walks here to admire the scenery and breathe in fresh sea air. The nicely restored cast iron Kukkukivi is located on the ridge in the middle of Loviisa, and it is still a very popular place to stop for a moment of rest.

The Bastions, Ungern and Rosen The fortress bastions Ungern and Rosen are grand landmarks of Loviisa town centre. Designed by Augustin Ehrensvärd, the construction of the fortresses to safeguard the eastern border of Sweden was started in 1748. According to the original plan, the whole town would have been surrounded by the fortress, but only a part of the construction was finished. The bastions Ungern and Rosen were almost done, as well as their earthfill embankments. The ruined walls of the bastions have been repaired often over time, and both of them are presently used as recreation areas.

Delicious moments one after another The crown of an eventful day is a good meal. The atmospheric cafés and restaurants at Loviisa are a challenge to your figure! But who would care during a vacation.
Laivasilta area At Café-Restaurant Saltbodan at Laivasilta you can spend enjoyable summer evenings listening to ambient music. The restaurant waits on tables, and the atmospheric bar uses half a boat as a counter. Beautiful summer days are best enjoyed by sitting in the outside area. Right next to the beach, Café-Restaurant Laivasilta serves barbeque food and delicious hamburgers to be enjoyed in the evening sun. Café-Restaurant Laivasilta Laivasilta 11, cdfastfood.fi
Beer and wine house Ölvin and Bistro Cantor The beer and wine house Ölvin and Bistro Cantor boast the most voluminous terrace couches in town, make sure that you can get up from them! The place is located at the lower courtyard of the old cantor’s house, between the Salt Square Suolatori and Beach Park Rantapuisto – across from Laivasilta. Greetings from Loviisa! A sympathetic little town with a lot going on. Many flea markets, old town and nice cafés. #youdcertainlylikeit
Tuhannen tuskan kahvila Tuhannen tuskan kahvila (The café of one thousand pains) in the historical lower town is a sight in itself. In its peaceful inner courtyard you will forget all rush and hurry. Bring a friend or a magazine! The mistress’s salty doughnuts, or soughnuts, are famous even abroad. Tuhannen Tuskan Kahvila Poikkikuja, tuhannentuskankahvila.fi

A touch of history
Almost all restaurants in Loviisa serve lunch. At Laivasilta, you can enjoy your meal in sea environment in the summer. E.g. Restaurants Bella and Sakura, the Nepalese Pahuna, Restaurant Loviisan Kappeli and of course the pizzerias and service stations are open in the town centre. Contact information on page 26
Café Vaherkylä is the most traditional café in Loviisa, Runda Munken the newest. Restaurant Loviisan Kappeli in the Kappelinpuisto Park is undoubtedly the largest, and Sakura the best hidden. In all of these, you can sit outside as well. Café Armas is situated inside the shopping centre Galleria, and there is also a variety of cakes at Saltbodan at Laivasilta.
Degerby Gille is the oldest tavern in Loviisa, with its own house ghosts! The restaurant is open on advance booking only.

Loviisan Kappeli in its original glamour Airi Kallio with a specialist qualification for painter has restored Restaurant Loviisan Kappeli to its original glamour. Although the building with its verdant surroundings is worth a visit in itself, we recommend that you enjoy e.g. the house sandwich there. Experience the fabulous terrace, champagne room, coffee parlour – the milieu makes you travel luxuriously back in time. In the summertime, concerts are arranged on the terrace, with a view over the gorgeous park and pond. Loviisan Kappeli played a vital part in Loviisa’s spa town history. Parks, adventures & moderately priced fun The Path of the Little Folk
Jill and Joy The beloved Jill and Joy (Onneli and Anneli) children’s books were filmed into movies in Loviisa. To commemorate this, the town has the Jill and Joy playground in the Rantapuisto area, and the house used in the filming stands in the Kappelinpuisto Park. From the Tourist Office you can get a map of the filming sites and go find them.
The Path of the Little Folk is full of surprises! Wander through town and find the doors to their dwellings. You can get the map from the Tourist Office, or download it at oktrian.fi/mobo.
