The coastal Loviisa

is the best small town in Finland! Loviisa, founded in 1745, has an interesting history. The town features fabulous town architecture, an inviting guest harbour and a unique feeling created by historical buildings, blooming gardens and a compact town centre. Pictorial countryside, beautiful archipelago, old Strömfors Iron Works milieu and versatile outdoor life opportunities will optimise your visit. And of course the children will also enjoy themselves in this home town of children’s Jill and Joy (Onneli and Anneli) movies. All this you can find along the E18 highway, less than an hour’s drive from Helsinki and within easy reach from Porvoo, Kotka and Kouvola. The Loviisa-dwellers are the friendliest along the south coast of Finland, wishing their guests warmly welcome.

Just like in the old times!

Wooden houses & cobblestone streets The historical lower part of town by the seaside is one of the most uniform 18th century wooden town sections in Finland. Cobblestones, sandy alleys, sheltered courtyards and bright-coloured facades make you smile. Loviisa has the 1970s town architect Elmar Badermann to thank for preserving the lower town plan, town structure and the valuable old buildings as an intact whole.

vaults, history, fun & excitement Svartholma Sea Fortress at the entrance to the Bay of Loviisa is a popular excursion destination for the whole family, reachable by both private boats and scheduled boat services. There are plenty of free berths for boats. Inside the fortress, the island’s colourful history is exhibited. In the summertime, guided walks are arranged, and there are two playgrounds and several campfire sites on the island. Further information on Svartholma and its services is available from Loviisa Tourist Office, tel. +358 40 555 3387 visitloviisa.fi

Svartholma is a sister fortress of Suomenlinna in Helsinki, belonging to the same defence chain of fortresses. The fortification of the island was started in 1748 according to the plans made by Colonel Augustin Ehrensvärd. Most of the work was finished during the 1750s. The Swedish command in Svartholma came to an end in 1808, when Svartholma surrendered almost without resistance to Russia. During the Crimean war in 1855 an English squadron blasted the fortress, and the ruins were left as they were.

Loviisa church

Windmill

Kukkukivi tower

The imposing neo-gothic church in the centre of Loviisa was finished in 1865. The red-brick church was designed by the architect G.T. Chiewitz and built in 1862–1865 after the previous wooden church was destroyed in a town fire in 1855. Some artefacts could be rescued from the old church and put on display at the present one, e.g. the old altar piece and crucifix, as well as the clock and the brass crown in the sacristy.

The windmill is a beautiful sight on top of the Myllyharju ridge, about 200 metres from the church. According to lore, there used to be ten mills on the ridge up until the end of the 19th century. The present restored windmill was brought there in 1926.

From the beautiful nationalromantic Kukkukivi you can enjoy a panorama view over the Bay of Loviisa. The tower was designed by architect K. Hjelt in 1906, as part of Loviisa’s history as a spa town. The visitors to the spa took walks here to admire the scenery and breathe in fresh sea air. The nicely restored cast iron tower Kukkukivi is located on the ridge in the middle of Loviisa, and it is still a very popular place to stop for a moment of rest.

Open June 4th through August 26th Brandensteininkatu 2

The Bastions, Ungern and Rosen The fortress bastions Ungern and Rosen are grand landmarks of Loviisa town centre. Designed by Augustin Ehrensvärd, the construction of the fortresses to safeguard the eastern border of Sweden was started in 1748. According to the original plan, the whole town would have been surrounded by the fortress, but only a part of the construction was finished. The bastions Ungern and Rosen were almost done, as well as their earthfill embankments. The ruined walls of the bastions have been repaired often over time, and both of them are presently used as recreation areas.

The majority of the specialized shops are located along Aleksanterinkatu, Kuningattarenkatu and Mariankatu.

Flea markets

Artisans and markets

Loviisa flea markets are getting famous, which is no wonder. They are several in number and they have a good, moderately priced selection of products. Come and make surprising finds!

The art of Loviisa’s artisans and ceramists can be bought at the various events as well as directly from their studios. Handicrafts can also be bought at the market square and the shop called Hulda Huoleton.

Malmgård Manor, shop and brewery

Photo: Brendan Austin

The Malmgård Manor grounds are organically farmed. The manor shop sells the estate’s own produce, including delicious emmer rices, and the Count even has his own brewery. The awarded Malmgård brewery beers and ciders are products of careful manual labour. You can take a tour of the brewery or just enjoy the atmosphere in the shop. Manor tours on public opening days and on advance booking for groups. Malmgård 47, 07720 Malmgård, malmgard.fi

EAT & DRINK

Delicious moments one after another The crown of an eventful day is a good meal. The atmospheric cafés and restaurants at Loviisa are a challenge to your figure! But who would care during a vacation.

Laivasilta area

Beer and wine house Ölvin

At Café-Restaurant Saltbodan at Laivasilta you can spend enjoyable summer evenings listening to music. The restaurant waits on tables, and the atmospheric bar uses half a boat as a counter. Beautiful summer days are best enjoyed by sitting in the outside area. Right next to the beach, Café-Restaurant Laivasilta serves barbeque food and delicious hamburgers to be enjoyed in the evening sun.

The beer and wine house Ölvin and Bistro Cantor boast the most voluminous terrace couches in town, make sure that you can get up from them! The place is located at the lower courtyard of the old cantor’s house, between the Salt Square Suolatori and Beach Park Rantapuisto – across from Laivasilta.

Loviisan Kappeli in its original glamour Airi Kallio with a specialist qualification for painter has restored Restaurant Loviisan Kappeli to its original glamour. Enjoy the building and its verdant surroundings during your meal and top it with delicious cakes. The milieu with a fabulous terrace, champagne room and a coffee parlour makes you travel luxuriously back in time. In the summertime, concerts are arranged on the terrace, with a view over the gorgeous park and pond. Loviisan Kappeli played a vital part in Loviisa’s spa town history. A touch of history Restaurant Degerby Gille is located in the oldest house of Loviisa town centre (from 1695). Gille warmly welcomes guests with an advance booking; it is also open for lunch on Thursdays around the year, as well as on different theme days every month. In July, Gille is open every day. Greetings from Loviisa! A sympathetic little town with a lot going on. Many flea markets, old town and nice cafés. #youdcertainlylikeit

Café Tuhannen tuskan kahvila Tuhannen tuskan kahvila (The café of one thousand pains) in the historical lower town is a sight in itself. In its peaceful inner courtyard you will forget all rush and hurry. Bring a friend or a magazine! The mistress’s salty doughnuts, or soughnuts, are famous even abroad. Enjoy delicacies at Strömfors

Almost all restaurants in Loviisa serve lunch. At Laivasilta, you can enjoy your meal in sea environment in the summer. E.g. Restaurants Bella and Sakura, the Nepalese Pahuna, Restaurant Loviisan Kappeli and of course the pizzerias and service stations are open in the town centre. As a novelty, Asian buffet Oishi Sushi Loviisa is at the Galleria Shopping Centre.

Konditoria-Café Vaherkylä is the most traditional of Loviisa cafés. Restaurant Loviisan Kappeli in Kappelinpuisto Park is undoubtedly the largest, and Sakura the best hidden. In all of these you can enjoy your coffee and cake outside, if you wish. You can choose from a variety of cakes also at Saltbodan at Laivasilta.

Bed & Bistro at the heart of Strömfors Iron Works provides manor accommodation with breakfast, as well as delicious food from locally produced ingredients during the summer.

Find little doors and song benches! The Path of the Little Folk The Path of the Little Folk is full of surprises! Walk across the town and woods looking for small doors – there are new ones at Strömfors Iron Works! Get your map at the Tourist Office or in the Internet, at oktrian.fi/mobo.

Inviting park benches with poems and songs You can find poem slates from the benches along the Myllyharju song trail; the lyrics vary from patriotism to the Finnish nature. Fetch the song trail brochure in Finnish or Swedish from the Tourist Office – a musical mobile application will also soon be available. The pedestrian path around Laivasilta offers seaside poems, Rantapuisto park benches are decorated, and the Esplanad Park at the town centre concentrates on love poems. Did you notice the painted electrical centres and rag rugs in the streets? The adventure is ready to begin! Loviisan pikkuväki, Loviisa runollisena, Hakeva Loviisa

The beloved Jill and Joy (Onneli and Anneli) children’s books were filmed into movies in Loviisa. To commemorate this, the town has the Jill and Joy playground in the Rantapuisto area, and the house used in the filming stands in the Kappelinpuisto Park. From the Tourist Office you can get a map of the filming sites and go find them.
