Just like in the old times!
Wooden houses & cobblestone streets The historical lower part of town by the seaside is one of the most uniform 18th century wooden town sections in Finland. Cobblestones, sandy alleys, sheltered courtyards and bright-coloured facades make you smile. Loviisa has the 1970s town architect Elmar Badermann to thank for preserving the lower town plan, town structure and the valuable old buildings as an intact whole.

SIGHTS
Catch the sights It is wonderful just to wander around in Loviisa, but there are some unique sights you do not want to miss. For example, the beautiful market square and its surroundings, the Kappelinpuisto Park, town museum, old lower town, Suolatori (the ”Salt square”) and the Laivasilta area (with old salt warehouses turned into restaurants and shops). Other points of interest are the Myllyharju song trail with its poem-decorated benches, and the Kukkukivi tower, a panorama lookout over the sea, the fortresses, the Ehrensvärd hiking route for history and nature lovers, Svartholma Sea Fortress, the medieval Pernaja church and the old Strömfors Iron Works. Allow yourself to be attracted by Loviisa’s most beautiful sights!
Guests, boats & evening sun The Laivasilta area is the pulsing heart of Loviisa in the summer. Restaurants, the guest harbour, shops, the maritime museum, the Jill and Joy playground, the packet yacht Österstjernan, salt warehouses – there is plenty to see in the area. Svartholma Sea Fortress vaults, history, fun & excitement Svartholma Sea Fortress at the entrance to the Bay of Loviisa is a popular excursion destination for the whole family, reachable by both private boats and scheduled boat services. There are plenty of free berths for boats. Inside the fortress, the island’s colourful history is exhibited. In the summertime, guided walks are arranged, and there are two playgrounds and several campfire sites on the island. In the summer time you can find a relaxed restaurant in the island, with live music during several weekends.

Svartholma is a sister fortress of Suomenlinna in Helsinki, belonging to the same defence chain of fortresses. The fortification of the island was started in 1748 according to the plans made by Colonel Augustin Ehrensvärd. Most of the work was finished during the 1750s. The Swedish command in Svartholma came to an end in 1808, when Svartholma surrendered almost without resistance to Russia. During the Crimean war in 1855 an English squadron blasted the fortress, and the ruins were left as they were.

Loviisa church The imposing neo-gothic church in the centre of Loviisa was finished in 1865. The red-brick church was designed by the architect G.T. Chiewitz and built in 1862–1865 after the previous wooden church was destroyed in a town fire in 1855. Some artefacts could be rescued from the old church and put on display at the present one, e.g. the old altar piece and crucifix, as well as the clock and the brass crown in the sacristy.
Windmill
Kukkukivi tower
The windmill is a beautiful sight on top of the Myllyharju ridge, about 200 metres from the church. According to lore, there used to be ten mills on the ridge up until the end of the 19th century. The present restored windmill was brought there in 1926.
From the beautiful nationalromantic Kukkukivi you can enjoy a panorama view over the Bay of Loviisa. The tower was designed by architect K. Hjelt in 1906, as part of Loviisa’s history as a spa town. The visitors to the spa took walks here to admire the scenery and breathe in fresh sea air. The nicely restored cast iron tower Kukkukivi is located on the ridge in the middle of Loviisa, and it is still a very popular place to stop for a moment of rest.
Open from June 4th until August 10th, Tuesdays through Saturdays, and on Saturday August 17th, 24th and 25th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brandensteininkatu 2 agricolanseurakunta.fi
The Bastions, Ungern and Rosen The fortress bastions Ungern and Rosen are grand landmarks of Loviisa town centre. Designed by Augustin Ehrensvärd, the construction of the fortresses to safeguard the eastern border of Sweden was started in 1748. According to the original plan, the whole town would have been surrounded by the fortress, but only a part of the construction was finished. The bastions Ungern and Rosen were almost done, as well as their earthfill embankments. The ruined walls of the bastions have been repaired often over time, and both of them are presently used as recreation areas.

Strömfors Iron Works Johan Creutz founded the iron works in 1698 and later sold it to Jacob Forsell and Anders Nohrström. In 1790, the 31-year-old Virginia af Forselles became manager of the works, and she continued to manage it for almost 60 years. Most of the present buildings are from this period. The Strömfors Iron Works area is characterized by craftsmanship and its scenic surroundings, perfect for picnicking and hiking. You can visit the forge museum, watch forging at the upper forge, admire art exhibitions at Tallinvintti gallery and enjoy the open air summer theatre at Ruukinmylly. Cafés, restaurants, swimming – everything is available at the little picturesque forging village. The octagonal wooden Ruotsinpyhtää church was built in 1771.

The awarded beers and ciders from the Malmgård Brewery are products of careful manual labour. You can take a tour of the brewery or just enjoy the atmosphere in the shop and summer café. Manor tours on public opening days and on advance booking for groups. Malmgård 47, 07720 Malmgård, tel. +358 40 168 5271. malmgard.fi

At Café-Restaurant Saltbodan at Laivasilta you can spend enjoyable summer evenings listening to music. The restaurant waits on tables, and the atmospheric bar uses half a boat as a counter. Beautiful summer days are best enjoyed by sitting in the outside area. Right next to the beach, Café-Restaurant Laivasilta serves barbeque food and delicious hamburgers to be enjoyed in the evening sun. Enjoy delicacies at Strömfors
Almost all restaurants in Loviisa serve lunch. At Laivasilta you can enjoy your meal at the seaside during summertime. In the town centre you can go to e.g. restaurant Sakura, the Nepalese Pahuna and of course the pizzerias and service stations. Oishi Sushi Loviisa serves Chinese food and sushi on the second floor of the Galleria Shopping Centre.
Konditoria-Café Vaherkylä is the most traditional of Loviisa cafés, Favorit Cafe & Teashop the newest and Sakura undoubtedly the best hidden. In all of these you can enjoy your coffee and cake outside, if you wish. You can choose from a variety of cakes also at Saltbodan at Laivasilta.
Bed & Bistro at the heart of Strömfors Iron Works provides manor accomodation with breakfast, as well as delicious food from locally produced ingredients during the summer.

Greetings from Loviisa! A sympathetic little town with a lot going on. Many flea markets, old town and nice cafés. #youdcertainlylikeit
Café Tuhannen tuskan kahvila Tuhannen tuskan kahvila (The café of one thousand pains) in the historical lower town area is a sight in itself. In its peaceful inner courtyard you will forget all rush and hurry. Bring a friend to chat with, or a magazine! The mistress’s salty doughnuts, or soughnuts, are famous even abroad. The café is open from the 1st of May until late autumn, and falls into hibernation after the Loviisa Christmas event. Café Tuhannen Tuskan Kahvila Poikkikuja, tuhannentuskankahvila.fi

Loviisa Camping, a great oasis for campers
Loviisa Camping is a unique experience even for a seasoned camper. The large park-like area by the sea is shaded by magnificent oaks. Of the two historical wooden villas, the other serves all visitors and the rooms of other villa can be rented. The investments in comfort include swings for daydreaming and a jetty shack for spending evenings with friends. Loviisa Camping is the most charming campers’ oasis in Finland. Strömfors Iron Works
Place to Sleep in the town centre is the newest hotel in Loviisa. The rooms of this self-service hotel have been totally renovated during the past two years. There’s a breakfast restaurant at the hotel. Hotel Zilton is a small hotel in the opposite side of the street from Place to Sleep. Zilton has a bar with karaoke and live band nights, and the hotel serves lunch during weekdays.
Rönnäs at the seaside by the golfcourse is the biggest concentration of cabins in the area, but there are plenty of villas, cabins and other choices of accomodation around the large township. The alternatives are listed on pages 26–27.
The historical Iron Works offer beautiful surroundings and nice accommodation in several places. At the villas and houses of HolidayStars, the Strömfors Bed & Bistro manor and the Krouvinmäki Boardinghouse, you can dream your favourite dreams in fabulous settings. Good night!

Find little doors and song benches! The Path of the Little Folk The path of the little folk is full of surprises! Walk across the town and woods looking for small doors – there are new ones at Strömfors Iron Works! Get your map at the Tourist Office.
Inviting park benches with poems and songs You can find poem slates from the benches along the Myllyharju song trail; the lyrics vary from patriotism to the Finnish nature. Fetch the song trail brochure in Finnish or Swedish from the Tourist Office. The pedestrian path around Laivasilta offers seaside poems, Rantapuisto park benches are decorated, and the Esplanad Park at the town centre concentrates on love poems. Did you notice the painted electrical centres and rag rugs in the streets? The adventure is ready to begin! Loviisan pikkuväki, Loviisa runollisena, Hakeva Loviisa

Three of the beloved Jill and Joy (Onneli and Anneli) children’s books were filmed into movies in Loviisa. To commemorate this, the town has the Jill and Joy playground in the Rantapuisto Park, and the house used in the filming stands in the Kappelinpuisto Park. From the Tourist Office you can get a map of the filming sites and go find them.
