Self-Led Visits If you would like to visit the museum and explore at your own pace, self-led, we recommend a full day in the spring/summer months April – July and a half day visit in the Autumn/Winter months, September – March. Please note; during our busiest times, we will not be able to accommodate all classes with a packed lunch space but schools are welcome to use the field during the warmer months.
Museum displays include the four following themes; Key Features!!! (Please allow approx. 15-20 minutes per theme.) ‘The Hall & its People’ - Here you can discover the hall’s history and the movers and shakers of the time, from 1825. ‘Collections & Collecting’- Here you can explore our strongest three collections including; The Armoury collection, The Fine Art collection, and the Ions collection.
Upstairs ‘Power House of Industry’ – Arrivals and dispatches to the town of Stockton; from the arrival of early Vikings to the worldwide dispatching of the humble but very useful match. Shipping and steam trains also feature heavy in this section. ‘Clocking Off’ – Discover what the residents of Stockton did in their spare time after work! Including sporting achievement’s, cinema, toys, housework, arts ‘n’ crafts hobbies, television, shopping and the pub! Please note; Stockton’s over all collection also contains many social and domestic artefacts and themes throughout.
The Victorian Street A visit to our most treasured Victorian Street is truly recommended. You & your class will surely want to see the highly acclaimed blacksmiths, our aromatic chemists, maybe the drapers, print shop or toy shop? We also boast the opening of our Police station. Please ensure you break your class into smaller groups of approximately 5-6 to access the street shops.
Museum Souvenir Shop Schools can also enjoy a visit to our fantastic, well stocked museum shop, with a wide range of products and souvenirs. Many schools limit children to £2.00 per child.
Sweet Shop Children will love dropping by J.F. Smiths the sweet shop; just be mindful if you are bringing a large group you might want to ring ahead and book your order to save long queues on the day. 10 | Learning Programme Spring/Summer 2015
Online Booking System Please note; all self-led visits and ‘Then and Now’ workshops are booked online. This allows you to book 24 hours around the clock, even when we are closed. How does it work?
Username & password The online booking system will invite you to enter your; Username (which is a school email address, ideally the school secretary’s). Then it will ask you for your; Password, all teachers within your school will need to share the same username & password should they want to make a booking. Print the guidelines as a download from our website www.prestonparkmuseum.co.uk ‘How to Make a School Booking’ guide.
Booking check list Before you embark on a booking please have the following ready; • Several dates to visit in case the first date you select is not available • Type of visit; i.e. self led or a specific workshop, or both • Do you require a packed lunch space? • A valid school purchase card; with relevant payment permissions/allowances agreed, debit card or credit card. If your school does not have a purchase card, an individual can use their own debit card. • To avoid disappointment you are advised to book your museum visit before you book your coach.
We don’t have a school purchase card, how can we make a booking? If your school is not on the purchase card scheme list provided by the L.E.A and staffs do not wish to use their own debit or credit card, due to potential double bookings, we cannot bypass the online booking system. Therefore only a basic ‘self led’ booking without workshops and lunch spaces can be honoured over the telephone and a cheque will need to be brought on the day of your visit, made payable to; Stockton Borough Council.
Packed Lunch Cabins Please note; if you require a lunch cabin, they are seasonal and so only available from April 1st - October 31st. It is only one cabin per school, per booking and each cabin seats 30 children. If you are bringing a whole year group you will be required to rota your classes between 12.00noon – 2.00pm. You are also asked to clear the space of any food and drink spills that you make and take away any rubbish left. Learning Programme Spring/Summer 2015 | 11
