Maps and records from the early 19th Century suggest that a travelling circus spent the winter months on the edge of Stockton town centre, near what is now West Row. In 2012, as Stockton Council commenced work on a multi-million pound refurbishment of the town’s High Street, the idea emerged of a story that might form the basis of a street theatre show. Sara Maitland,
short story writer and novelist, was invited to produce a work which took as its start point the invention of the friction match by John Walker in 1829. The commissioned work, Instant Light, tells the story of John Walker’s invention of the friction match and woven through it the magic of the circus to create a mythical version of how SIRF may have come about. Our story starts on Thursday 30th July when the circus troupe arrives in Stockton by boat to be welcomed by a jubilant crowd.

WELCOME
Welcome to the 28th SIRF Bringing our communities together and putting Stockton on an international map, Stockton Council is proud to present the 28th Stockton International Riverside Festival. If you’ve not been to SIRF before you are in for a treat, and perhaps a surprise. If you are one of our loyal audience members you should make sure you clear your diary and plan your visit to make the most of our street arts extravaganza. The programme this year is stunning, it will take your breath away, and the backdrop is a town centre of sparkling, newly laid granite, beautiful central garden and fountain, relaxing seating areas, and independent coffee shops and cafes. We are delighted to welcome the Chairman of Arts Council England, Sir Peter Bazalgette to officially open the event, celebrating the important role SIRF plays in the development of UK outdoor theatre. Our 2015 commissions include shows by strong north east companies Southpaw Dance Company and balletLORENT, which we hope will tour internationally after their performances in Stockton. The balletLORENT show, Love Struck, tells part of the Instant Light story, alongside shows by CirkVOST, Slung Low, and Cie Carabosse. The original text, commissioned by Stockton Council and written by Sara Maitland, highlights the true story of how Stockton gave the world the friction match, and creates the myth of how Stockton got its festival. Enjoy. Paul Dobson Corporate Director
