Prayer Father we thank you for your Word that provides us with guiding principles and is the one true source of authority for Christian living. Because of it, we are commissioned to share Your Good News with all men that they may come to know You in the power of Your resurrection. Lord we thank You for liberty that enables us to boldly walk and declare that Your spirit has been poured out upon all men and that neither gender nor position will hinder what You have already preordained. We surrender to Your will and walk in Your spirit that empowers us to effectively teach, minister, preach and witness to mankind.
Personal Lord I acknowledge this life I live is all about You and Your perfect will for the furtherance of Your Kingdom. Use me as You see fit to share Your goodness and to be a living example of faith and that my life is evidence of true worship.

oes God call women to preach? Can a woman be a pastor? Unfortunately, even in the year 2011, we are still faced with these questions. As a woman who is certain of her God-ordained call to preach and pastor, I must admit that this is disheartening. It is disheartening that people would try to deny a God ordained / inspired purpose in the life of another because of gender. It is further disheartening when that oppressive mindset comes from another woman. While having a conversation with a male colleague in the ministry, he retold a conversation he had with a woman who stated that while she did believe that God calls women to preach, it is easier for her to receive The Word from a man than from a woman. Is not the Word of God, the Word of God? Is it now more or less effective based on gender? Excuse me, but I must have missed that qualifier on the scripture that describes The Word as being more powerful than any twoedged sword. This entire controversy is filled with so much irony. There is irony in the scriptures used to justify that God does not call women. There is irony in the behavior/beliefs of those who hold fast to this mindset. An example which quickly comes to mind is one of a very famous pastor who has drawn thousands of women to his conferences in order for them to be loosed. While, I would never try to negate or dismiss his ministry or impact in the lives of women, he has never been a woman. He has never known intimately or at the most basic/cellular levels of what it means to be a wom-
an. Who better to tell the story, than the one who lives the life? Who can better understand the feminine self that has been wonderfully and fearfully created in the divine image of God than a woman? Here’s the irony I mentioned earlier many women and men, who deny the call of God on women, will flock to hear this pastor preach, and he himself believes in women preachers/pastors. I can certainly understand where the confusion concerning women in ministry arises from. I just wish more people took time to do as the scriptures states, “study to show thyself approved.” (2Timothy 2:15) I wish more people understood what it means to be hermeneutically sound when reading scriptures. As a woman who has spent most of her childhood and all of her adulthood in the church, I am very cognizant of both the peace and the tension that is present in this institution. While growing up in the church, I heard many sermons describing how “all things are possible with God.” My pastor, Sunday school teachers and other members of the congregation often told me that I could be whatever I wanted. They were exceptional at encouraging me to dream. However, as an adult I came to realize the limitation of that encouragement and those sermons. They were really telling me that all things were possible with God and I could be whatever I wanted, except a preacher and God forbid a pastor. My early memories of the roles that women assumed in church are of those who served on the Pastor’s Aid Committee, Ushers, Sunday School Teachers, Choir Members, Church

Mothers, Deaconesses, or as Church Clerks or Secretaries. They were the ladies who cooked the fried chicken, the greens and the sweet potato pies for post-worship fellowship or dinner sales. These women were gifts to the ministry in a variety of ways. They provided a foundation and kept the ministry alive with their presence and presents (church dues, tithes and offerings). However, the male pastor, the male deacons and the male trustees made all of the decisions and held the positions of esteem. I internalized this; it became normative, because whenever I heard of a woman preacher or a woman pastor, I could not understand how this could be. In my religious training, God had not called women to preach and certainly not to pastor. In my religious vernacular, she was “out of order.” Nevertheless, just as the women that I questioned, I too had an encounter with God and received my own calling into the ministry. Conflicted within myself, I struggled with this divine mandate and what I had previously been instructed in church. How could God be calling me to preach? What about the way I responded to those other women who were called? How would I, how could I, be received as a female minister? I embarked on a path, struggling with the fear and the conviction of the call, where I would desperately need the grace of God. As I progressed through my ministerial journey there was (and still is) significant interest around the subject of my gender. There was/is sexism (from men and women), there was/is sexual harassment and there were/are questions of my sexual orientation. While enrolled in a seminary course on race and gender in religious education, I disclosed my experiences in ministry. Some of the women in class responded with the nodding of their heads and others responded with “I know how that feels”. However, I was shocked by the number of women who approached me after class and thanked me for having the courage to speak out. They too had similar encounters, but were too embarrassed to speak of them. I am convinced in the omnipotence of God, the ability of God to do whatever God chooses to do and use whomever God chooses to us. I know some will say that God will not contradict The Word. It’s not a matter of God contradicting The Word, as much it is people not understanding, or people operating under a poor interpretation. The primary scriptures used to justify the idea that women should not preach/

pastor are taken from 1 Corinthians 14:3435 and 1Timothy 2:11-15. As is true with all scripture, it should be read in context. Reading a s c r i p t u re in context means that there is an understanding of times (cultural expectations, language, societal roles, political influences…) as well as understanding literary forms. There is more
to understanding the Bible than just reading the commentary notes from the King James Version. I wish there was time to do an exercise in biblical exegesis and hermeneutics. Nonetheless, during the writing of these texts women were less than second class citizens, they were viewed as property. They had no rights. Women were not in control over who they would marry. They had no say over what happened to their bodies. Women were not educated. They were not learned; that was strictly reserved for men. For a woman to speak in an audience of men was a disgrace. For a woman to demonstrate a superior knowledge in a subject of importance - such as religion - over man would be intolerable. It is pretty much akin to a current belief held by some that children should be seen and not heard. It was simply the custom that men do all of the teaching and the only people who were taught through the system in place were males. If we want to hold fast to biblical customs, we should be prepared to return to practices such as stoning adulterers, arranged marriages, not working on the Sabbath, and even the practice of slavery. In the Corinthian passage, the writer states that the women are to be in submission as the “law” requires. Isn’t it funny how we pick and choose when we operate under the law or live in the dispensation of grace? Do we even understand the purpose of the law? If we are going to live according to the law, let us all (men and women alike) be prepared to be condemned by the law. (Romans 3:19-20 NIV) states, “Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world be accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather through the law we become conscious of sin.” If we uplift the law, then the cross of Christ is of no effect. Nevertheless, even within the strict confinements of the law, the Old Testament is not without examples of women serving in leadership positions. Deborah served as a judge, which meant she was in charge of all people – including men. Miriam served in leadership with her brothers Moses and Aaron. Even the vilified, Rahab made business dealings to save the life of her family, a matter usually handled by men. (Joshua 2:12-14). Obviously, God does not consider gender or societal roles, when accomplishing divine purposes. In addition to silencing women, the passage in 1 Timothy 2 also describes how women are to dress – in modest apparel, not having braided hair or wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothing. It is commonly believed that this was the custom of women engaged in prostitution, but nevertheless there are denominations that still hold to the belief that women should not wear make-up or jewelry. This passage further goes on to state that women shall be saved through childbearing. What happens to women who are unable to bear children? Here is another irony. The one that is upheld for his writing silencing women in the church (Paul) was constantly trying to authenticate his own ministry. (Galatians 1:1) This same Paul also salutes a husband and wife team Priscilla and Aquila, who he refers to as his fellow laborers in ministry (Romans 16:3); he acknowledges Phoebe (Romans 16:1) and uses the same
word as the one used to describe the character of the male deacons in 1 Timothy; he acknowledges Junia (Romans 16:7 and describes her as being among the apostles and was with Christ before he knew Christ. Paul even calls on Timothy to remember the faith that dwells inside Him as a result of what he witnessed by his mother and grandmother (1 Timothy 1:5) The Bible is steeped in patriarchy, yet there is still liberation to be found. (Joel 2:28 NIV) reads, “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy (speak under divine influence)…” I am amazed that people will overlook philandering and cheating male pastors, but are in an uproar over a woman fulfilling the life God has ordained. Regardless of what people may use to state that God does not use women, I would much rather look at the words and life of Jesus Christ. Jesus proclaimed his ministry in Luke 4:18 -19 NIV, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Because of the complete work of Jesus, I am free and not bound by man’s customs. Jesus, Himself was not constrained by the religious systems that oppressed people. It was for that reason, they sought to crucify Him. Everyone who calls Christ the Savior is given a mandate to preach the gospel. We also should consider what it means to preach. To preach means to proclaim the good news. The good news is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The first person to do that in scripture was a woman. Here’s another irony, even then the apostles didn’t believe her. (Matthew 28:1-10 / Luke 24:1-12) While there are some who may label me crazy, out of order, call me a Jezebel or even wicked; I am persuaded that nothing can separate me from the love of God nor the call to proclaim God’s word. As long as there is breath in this body, I will take a text and deliver it – and the church said, “A (wo)MAN!!!!

joined a very traditional Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 12, fifty years later, I am still a member. I have been nurtured in traditional Baptist doctrine and discipline, having served in numerous capacities, under two Pastors and in various ministries. I was married in this church, my children were baptized in it, and my grandchildren were christened here; thus, I have sufficient history to reflect on some of the changes and transitions in Baptist doctrine and discipline. The very mention of women in ministry in traditional Baptist churches sparks very heated and controversial conversations. I had heard my parents, grandparents, older relatives, neighbors, church leaders, and preachers discuss the subject as taboo. I remember reciting, in several church services, the Baptist Church Covenant. In many instances this covenant seemed to be held in higher esteem than the Word of God. From where I sat, the following excerpt from that covenant was a foundational justification of the Baptist church not supporting women in ministry. The excerpt reads “In the case of difference of opinion, in the church, we will strive to avoid a contentious spirit, and if we cannot unanimously agree, we will cheerfully recognize the right of the majority to govern.” It would seem to me, the use of the Word of God would be the most effective means to settle differences of opinions in the church rather than the right of the majority, particularly if the majority did not accept a woman’s call to ministry. Women had their place in the church and it did not include the pulpit. They were allowed to teach in the Missionary Society and Sunday school. On occasion, a woman would be allowed to speak from the floor, not the pulpit, at a “Women’s Day Celebration” service. The most common argument I remember hearing against women in the ministry was “men should not sit under women” or submit to the leadership of women, and the proof was the Apostle Paul’s exhortation in I Corinthians 14:34 to men, to let their wives keep silent in the churches. Although I have been in the church all my life, I have not always been a student of the Bible. Since I was not a student of the Bible in my teens and early adulthood and the concept of women preaching was not accepted in the Baptist church, I myself accepted and embraced that same mind set. So the thought of women preaching in the pulpit at the Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church was not even fathomable.
14| SPIRIT RISING
While on a bus, en route to a women’s conference in Atlanta, Georgia in the early 1990s, I and some other ladies had, what I like to refer to as a spiritual encounter, with the incumbent Pastor’s youngest daughter. She began to expound profoundly and animatedly on the Word of God. She captivated us with the way she articulated the Word on the matter being discussed. Something very special had happened. All of us who heard what she had to say were left with a resounding Word that lingered throughout the weekend and we collectively thought and speculated, “Could she be called to preach? Could this be the vessel God is going to use to bring about change, the Pastor’s daughter?”
where I did not even support the concept of women in ministry, because it was an attitude that had been fostered and nurtured in the religious genre in which I was reared. I also did not want to be just one more in the number. I talked to God much and often on every aspect of this call. One prayer was that God would confirm this call in my Pastor as He had confirmed it in me. I asked God to prepare Pastor’s heart so he would not have doubt when I went to him, and so He did. When I stopped kicking, screaming and making excuses, God orchestrated a smooth transition. Three more women, including myself have since been licensed at the Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, and now there are six.
Although we definitely felt there was a call on her life, long after that encounter there was no visible acknowledgement of that call. She left to go away to college and attached herself to a church under watch-care, or spiritual covering. During her time there she was licensed as a minister. Her father, mother, siblings, and several members from our congregation made the trip to support her and hear her initial sermon. It was a joyous and exciting occasion. Her father was proud and well pleased. We all thought, well now what does this mean when we get back home? Will it be business as usual or has this opened a door for a least an amenable discussion of women in ministry in this Baptist church? It should be noted, the church that licensed her was not a Baptist church. Although she did not come home to stay until sometime after her post-graduate work was completed, she was ordained by her father and did preach from the pulpit at the Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, and then there was one.
Effective change begins at the head. From where I sit, over the years, through sound teaching, preaching and study, we have evolved into a church governed by the Word of God rather than a denominational covenant. Proverbs 21:1 NLT states, “The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the LORD; He guides it wherever He pleases.” Certainly if the LORD will take care to fashion the heart of a government official, He will take particular care to turn the heart of one He chooses. Obedience moves the hand of God, and from where I sit, my pastor desires to be obedient to God and in turn practices obedience to God. When we are yielded clay on the Potter’s wheel, He fashions us into whatever He desires. Therefore, in obedience to God my pastor surrendered his will and God’s will is being done at the Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Under-girded by the Holy Spirit, I have progressed in my spiritual walk from a church attendee, to participant, and now servant. God has called me from the pew to the pulpit in a traditional but transitioning Baptist Church. “O What a Change in My Life!”
Following the public acknowledgment of this call to ministry, Pastor cautiously guarded this new embarkation. From where I sat, although Pastor made no apologies or excuses to his colleagues, who still opposed women being called into ministry, I believe he was tempering an onslaught of acknowledgements from those who were truly called and those who just merely went. Time passed and quietly and uneventfully, in a Sunday morning service Pastor announced that two more women had acknowledged their call to ministry and would soon preach their initial sermons, and so they did. Now there were three. Who would have thought that through a Sunday school teaching ministry, the Holy Spirit was not only confirming but launching me into such a call? I resisted the call for several years and for several reasons. After all, I was still in a place

ave you ever noticed that difficult circumstances have a myriad of ways of provoking us to get caught up? We become consumed with our own lives instead of enjoying the freedom God has given us through Jesus Christ. We become so busy and focused on our own issues that we are unable to hear God’s voice and unable to see how the enemy wants to use our unbalanced mindsets to kill our passion, steal our joy and destroy our faith. No matter what area or level of ministry we are called or chosen to serve in, it can be a very frustrating and overwhelming experience, when we are not resting in God’s grace, which He has promised is sufficient (2 Cor. 2:9). Now, I in no way profess that this is something that I have fully accomplished in my own life. However, I will say that I am a living witness that leading or serving in a ministry, without truly believing and trusting that God’s grace is sufficient when life’s difficulties begin to weight you down, is a formula for frustration and failure. About eight years ago, I was led by God, to develop a women’s ministry in my church. It was not a task that I willingly accepted. In fact, I downright rejected the idea and gave God all kinds of excuses as to why He couldn’t be asking me. I simply didn’t believe that I was qualified to take on such an assignment. After several weeks of telling God - “no not me,” I received an inspirational email from a dear sister-in-Christ who knew nothing about what I was struggling with. In the contents of the email were quotes and phrases that described God’s character; one of which was, “God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.” I believed that God was trying to tell me something; yet I still was not convinced that He was leading me to start a ministry. It wasn’t until I attended a women’s conference in Atlanta, Georgia about a month after receiving the email that I was persuaded this was something God wanted me to do. I believed this because during the conference, as one of the speakers was sharing a word of encouragement, she spoke those very same words, “God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.” At that moment I was convinced that God was confirming my assignment to develop the ministry. After returning home, I made the decision to approach my Pastor and tell him what God was leading me to do.

To my surprise, he told me someone had approached him about the need for such a ministry, and he had been praying about who would lead it. To make a long story short, our pastor and the Christian education director, approved the development of the ministry and the journey began. After a year of planning and preparation, the ministry was birthed. For more than six years, I was blessed with the opportunity to serve as the lead servant of the ministry alongside five other co-ministry leaders. By faith I believed that God would draw the women together in an effort to support and encourage each other as we sought to be more like Jesus in every area of our lives. Although there was opposition and challenges, I can truly say that spiritual growth and sisterly bonding took place among ARLICE LARKIN is an Administrative Secretary currently seeking a degree in Mass Communication and Journalism. About four years into the ministry, I experienced some personal challenges that limited my ability to effectively lead. My husband and I acquired temporary custody of our granddaughter; although we believed it was in her best interest, our youngest child was 15 at the time that was a big adjustment for us. During this time, I was also suffering from uterine fibroids that kept me physically fatigued. In my efforts to balance it all in my own strength, I fell into a trap of discouragement and eventually depression, knowing that I had failed God. I cried out for help but felt no one was there, not even God. There were some who tried to comfort and encourage me, but I choose to believe that no one really understood my struggles. After about two years of feeling frustrated and overwhelmed, I stepped down as lead servant believing that I could no longer effectively lead the ministry and manage my home life. I was also told that ministry starts in the home, so I focused on home, as well as rebuilding intimacy with God.
Like Paul, I believe God allowed the difficulties in my life to keep me humble. However, instead of resting in His grace, I found myself in a place where I needed to reclaim peace of mind, renew my relationship with God and regain my strength to press forward in Christ. God told Moses that His grace would bring him to a place of rest and peace. Paul said it’s not me doing the work; it is the grace of God working through me that accomplishes the will of God. This is a great lesson that I learned. God’s grace is always sufficient and His strength is made prefect in my weakness. He will always give me the grace that I need to overcome every troubling situation that life puts in front of us. In fact it can be multiplied as I increase in the knowledge of God and the knowledge of Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1) The more I learn about God, the more I learn about His grace. I know that God has forgiven me for my failure to acknowledge and walk in His grace, and I trust that He is working everything out for good. If He reopens that door to lead the women’s ministry again, I will boldly step through it knowing that without a shadow of a doubt, His grace is sufficient. If not, I will still rest in this truth for whatever He has planned for my future. “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ to whom be praise and dominion forever and ever. (I Peter 4:10-11 NKJV) We are the stewards of the grace that is flowing in our life. We must learn what it is, recognize it when it comes and then flow with it.

Spiritual Intimacy: The Lord wants us to know Him in a personal and intimate way. As you begin this week, mediate on these scriptures and ask God to reveal to you your spiritual temperature and seek to improve your level of intimacy. (Deut.10:12-17; Ps.63:1-8; Joel 2:12,13; Matt.6:19-21)
1-7
Witness: As Christians, we are commanded by God to go out into all the world and spread the gospel. How well are we doing with being a witness? Do we think we have to have a doctorate in theology before were qualified? This week, meditate on Matthew 28:16-20 and ask God what being a witness looks like for you specifically.
8-17
Fellowship: We were created for relationship. Relationship with the Most High God as well as relationship with other Christ following brothers & sisters. We all fit together in the body of Christ, each having our own unique fit. Are you having fellowship as God commands you to, or are you allowing offenses and/or annoyances to get in the way of God’s plan for His Church? Consider Hebrews 10:25 in context (Hebrews 10:20-30), for your study this week.
15-21
Pride: This is the noose that suffocates communication with our Heavenly Father. Pride is always about the individual and never about a Holy God. This week is about humility. Pray for the humility that enables you to see who you are in His sight. (Isaiah 4:2; Prov.11:2; Psa.36:11, Pov.16:18,19)
22-28
Forgiveness: When we hold resentment toward someone, we create a negative connection that can be stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free. My friend, do not allow the chain of unforgiveness to bind you up and weigh you down. Remember how freely God forgives us and be willing to extend the same forgiveness to others. (Eph.4:32; Mat.6:14 MSG; Gal.6:1MSG)
29-31

Leadership: If we are not allowing Jesus to be our leader, then we are following in futility. Jesus makes it crystal clear. This week, be encouraged to follow the example of Jesus knowing we have the power to do so. (Ps.25:5; Ps.31:3; Ps.61:2; Ps.119:105)
1-4
Submission: Before we can exercise any type of authority, we must first practice submission. However hard or easy this may be for you, we must follow the example of Christ. He came to serve, but first submitted to His Father’s will. Consider these scriptures this week as you walk under the authority of those around you, such as your supervisor, spouse, church leaders, etc. (Rom. 13:107; Titus 3:1; 1 Pet.2:13; Eph 5:21; 1 Pet.5:1-2)
5-11
Obedience: What is Your will for me Father? It is in the place of obedience that we experience the fullness of what He has for us. Obedience is NEVER regretful. This week, choose to obey. Commit at least two scriptures to memory. (Deut.13:4; Luke 6:46; Jos.1:8; James 1:2; 1 Sam.15:22; Mat.7:14; 2 Kings 18:6; Ps.119:60)
12-18
Prayer: Prayer is so much more than us bowing the knee, putting our heads down, hands up, or crossed “right.” It’s about positioning our hearts towards His. It’s about putting our focus on Him, not us. Whether you are a seasoned Christian or you’ve just come to know the Lord; know this, “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” -Martin Luther King Jr. Engross yourself in the Word of God this week. (Phil.4:6; Mark 11:24; Rom.8:26; 1 Joh.5:14,15; Ps55:17; Col.4:2)
19-25
Encouragement: Encouragement is not about fixing someone else’s brokenness. It’s about becoming a channel of God’s compassion that will be the catalyst of turning that person’s heart toward God. This is not an option for us as God’s children, it’s a mandate. (Heb.10:25ESV) Do not allow this week to end without encouraging someone. Consider these scriptures this week in your time of study. (Job 16:5; Ps.10:17; Isa.1:17; Rom.12:8; Col.4:8; Eph.6:22; 2 The.2:17; Titus 1:9; Heb.3:13)

It’s All about
Balance Dr. Deborah Jones-Allen
There are no easy solutions to the dilemmas that confront women in ministry. Make no mistake about the situations God uses to challenge the way we think or handle issues that face the 21st century church. Despite recent advances, the modern church has enormous needs and women are finding themselves filling more difficult roles. In years past, women were not as involved in ministry as they are today. This is because their primary role was as minister of the home. Their number one goal was to raise spiritually healthy children who were socially appropriate. Today’s women however, encounters a myriad of challenges, particularly in ministry. Her challenges can range from demands at home or in the church, including respect in the pulpit. It is no secret that women have to multi-task in order to meet the demands of mother, wife, friend, minister, or teacher, and at the same time find enough time in their schedule for self-care. Women in ministry face unique challenges, re-occurring issues, concerns, demands and accomplishments, and must contend with barriers that block forward momentum. Women pastors especially, experience these issues and many find themselves juggling the weight of being effective in ministry and balancing the demands of family. What kinds of solutions can we offer to deal with the stressors of busy women in ministry, regardless of race or ethnicity? I encourage women to sit at the feet of Jesus in order to surrender to His transforming graces. “Surely He has borne our grieves and carried our sorrows.” (Isaiah 53:4 KJV) What has caused this cry for help? What is happening to Godly women who serve an omniscient God? Are women able to minister effectively if their hearts are shattered? For the sake of ministry are women losing their joy and peace while knowing their value to God? Did their relationship change after making a decision to follow God? According to the Bible, “A false balance is an abomination to Jehovah; but a just weight is his delight.” Proverbs 11:1 ASV Although women are struggling to find balance and deal with stress, we can trust God in prayer, knowing that He will never leave us or forsake us. He is a very present help in the

time of trouble. Women, (whether they’re changing diapers, helping with schoolwork, taking the kids to soccer, football or cheerleading, working full-time, caring for an elderly parent, or in a leadership role), must find a personal and internal balance. This is necessary if they are to move forward in the kingdom of God. Women are not men and should not be tempted to take on more than they can handle to prove a point to males in ministry adding to the cause of ambiguity, stress and burn-out. Today’s women can write their own ticket in life. Since stress is an inevitable part of a woman’s life, it’s beneficial to understand the spiritual connection between progress and process. Failure to give attention to stressors can lead to resentment to perform to the best of one’s ability, taking a toll physically, mentally and emotionally. Women engaged in full-time ministry are challenged to contend with acceptance and dominance. Stress created in the psyche can lead to silent pressures of oppression and loneliness in women as they care for their home. Plugging energy leaks are essential if women are to thrive and serve leading their families and others to Christ. Be encouraged to help one another as you reach an impasse to rediscover balance. Women have purpose in the Kingdom of God regardless of their position in the home, the office or behind the sacred desk. A simple adjustment can help you reduce stress and thrive in your office. Prayer, meditation, setting boundaries with screaming demands can help you stay in touch with your emotional and spiritual health. Whatever position you serve in, it’s important to have faith. God does not want us stressed or overwhelmed in His work of service. In essence you work for God and He is fully acquainted with your limits. Take time to revive your spirit at the feet of Jesus; His presence will usher you into an everlasting joy. His Spirit will give you peace and a fresh outlook to serve those entrusted to you. God is leading us to do ministry in a different manner and He has control of our lives. The women who are prepared will make a difference in this generation. Are you prepared to do ministry “and who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14 NIV

ow does a woman minister at home? Does it mean that a pulpit is installed in her living room and she preaches a sermon every day? Does it mean that she has studied theology, Christian education or Christian counseling? Are women required to attend training and obtain certification? Ministry defined is - an activity carried out by Christians to express or spread their faith. The Encyclopedia of Christianity (2003) defines it as, “carrying forth Christ’s mission in the world”. It is performed by all Christians. This is distinguished from the “office of minister,” to which specific individuals feel a certain vocation. Some ministries are identified formally as such, and some are not; some ministry is directed towards members of the church, and some towards non-members.

Women have a tremendous responsibility to minister at home. Women are wives, mothers, daughters and sisters. It includes demonstrating kindness, love and discipline, preparing meals with love, setting a daily example for her children to follow and praying for her family before they rise. These at home ministers are also responsible for sensing dangers that lie ahead and diffusing them while continuously teaching the Word of God through Bible study and behavior. In the Bible, there is a very familiar passage that describes a woman’s ministry at home commonly referred to as Proverbs 31. In spiritual circles, the Proverbs 31 woman is known as trustworthy and a great wife. She is depicted as resourceful and hardworking; a shrewd businesswoman; compassionate and community service oriented individual. She is a respected mother and a Woman of God. As a woman living in 2011, you may be wondering, is this Proverbs 31 woman real in today’s society? Can you possibly exhibit all of these characteristics and qualities? When considering these questions, it is impor-
tant to remember that God has a specific plan for you. (Jeremiah 29:11) God’s plan for you may vary drastically from His plan for another woman. For example, there may be a woman who is a corporate businesswoman, wife, mother of three and Woman of God active in her church home. On the other hand, there are women whose primarily responsibilities are centered around managing her home, family, community service and ministry commitments on a full-time basis. Proverbs 31 is encouragement for women to operate with a spirit of excellence. God has called you to excellence in your current state whether it is in your family, business, marriage, singleness, community or your relationship with God. You may be wondering what your God given roles should be in your life. If you are uncertain, a good place to start is to ask God, study His Word and seek the counsel of your family and trusted spiritual leaders who know your strengths and weaknesses. Consider the following questions when examining how you provide ministry in the home.

ithin the Christian community there are myriad views about women in ministry and many books are published to explore the capacities of ministry in which they serve, sort of a “Christianity Unsung.” In this dispensation of Christian history, there is a drive to herald the contributions of women in ministry, but are there some ministries that should go unnoticed? As a pastor’s wife, it is interesting when people share their views not knowing I am married to a pastor. The perspectives range from her role being the key support that enables the pastor to be effective in ministry to her being the one who “deals” with women that show inappropriate interest in the pastor and everything in between. In truth, the pastor’s wife does so much more, inclusive of supporting and protecting her husband. There is a ministry of the pastor’s wife that often goes unnoticed by the congregation: the ministry to her husband and family—and it is a very good thing. To those who disagree, you’re entitled. I do not seek to convince, only to share my reasons and to offer a bit of advice to the woman who desires to marry a pastor or knows that her husband will serve in a pastoral role. While I want the effects of my ministry to my family to touch the lives of others, I am happy to perform this ministry without the attention of others. I prefer that people notice the effects of my ministry to my family and believers rather than the act of it. It is not because I fear their judgment; people saved and unsaved will do that anyway. I have observed firsthand how known Christian leaders’ flaws have been stumbling blocks to other believers. We have many examples of churches that are dismantled with regard to effectiveness because the pastor was found to have succumbed to a sin that is common to man. As a family in ministry we are not perfect, and do not attempt to give that perception to anyone. Even so, people ascribe a standard of perfection to the spiritual leader, his wife and kids. They also often lack the ability to do what they are taught as their Christian duty: forgive and restore. I know personally that the ability to accept flaws in others only comes through spiritual maturity. I remember as a new disciple, I had a lot of difficulty accepting

the things I saw in Christian leaders I was pastored by and was very judgmental of them when details of their flaws were exposed during a conflict. As I grew in faith I realized that each believer is at a different place in their Christian journey and sometimes makes bad mistakes. The fact that there are things in my life that I have not yet conquered even after becoming more mature, has wisely taught me to be tolerant and compassionate with other believers. That lesson stuck with me as my husband and I entered into ministry leadership. Yes we all have the same issues, family conflicts, challenges and sins. However as a pastor’s wife, I do my best to minimize the amount of details about our personal affairs including our children becoming public and bravely guard against those who would pry or attempt to integrate themselves into our personal family life. As Christ must be respected in His place for the believer to rely on His power to deliver, the appointed messenger and shepherd must also be respected for the believer to value the spiritual guidance provided to him or her. In my opinion, personal knowledge of the pastor’s household affairs and challenges is a distraction and unnecessary impediment to the young believers’ faith. The effects of my unseen ministry to my husband are evident to the congregation by the consistent care and service my husband is able to render to them in teaching them, praying with and for them in challenging times and doling out spiritual discipline that is necessary to spur growth and obedience to our Lord. I know that my husband’s ability to discuss and implement Kingdom affairs with me is a direct reflection of how I minister to him and share his vision for building the maturity of our members. It is my ministry to him and my family that allows him to devote his full attention to shepherding the congregation with assurance that his family life is intact and he does not have to defend his flaws to those he’s leading. The effects of my ministry in the congregation are known most in how people respond to me rather than the ministry teams, and church projects I have lead and served on. I am no spiritual lightweight, but people don’t know

that from my preaching. I’ve never preached. Lord knows I want to sing, but no one could bear that. They know it because as much wisdom and Word as I have absorbed, I strive to apply it in relationships. The pastor’s wife can be a powerful help or destructive force in a congregation of believers. In preparing this piece a dear friend who is a member of our congregation and Editor-in Chief of a well known Christian magazine made the following observation: “One of the first things I admired about you in your role as a Pastor’s wife was your willingness to embrace your congregation on an intimate personal level, something that helps people to feel connected, valued and truly cared for, which opens hearts for your husband, because you complement each other.” I was very humbled by her statement and did not know I had that effect on her, but this is the effect of ministry. It is not easily seen and rarely front and center, but accomplished quietly in one-to-one interactions that build others up. I wouldn’t trade the ministry of encouragement for anything in the world. If I could offer a bit of advice to a woman who desires to marry a pastor or who knows her husband will serve in a pastoral capacity, I would let her know that the sacrifice of less time with her husband is not to be easily dismissed. It takes continuous prayer to accept this price and not view it as an obstacle, like daily taking up your cross. To not embrace it may cause you to compete for his time at the expense of the congregation and the health of your relationship, forcing him at times to choose. There is a balance to be achieved, and if you so desire the wisdom, God will show you how to maximize the quality of time with your husband and children. I would also urge you to know and embrace the vision God has given your husband for the congregation and labor alongside him. It is an immensely rewarding place to be in, but take care to respect the authority that is your husband’s alone in his pastoral office. Know that your support of your husband, in his role of pastor, is in no way in lieu of your operating in the spiritual gifts given by your Father. You must perform the work He has assigned to you. There is room for you to be the support your husband’s needs as pastor while being faithful to the things God called you to accomplish as an individual. In my humble opinion, the less noticed the act ministry is, the greater the impact or effect it will have.

THOUGHT STREAM W
e’ve seen the varying opinions from our writers, guest contributors and columnists on the matter of “Women in Ministry.” We posed some very specific questions on the topic to some of the female members of the SPIRIT RISING THOUGHT STREAM. The THOUGHT STREAM is a collective of lovers of God’s Word, Pastors, Ministers and Bible students who will offer their special insight each issue. Three women of God, Mercy Rice, Heather Palacios and Laura Dahne, provided insightful, thought provoking responses that we hope will spark some conversation among you!

Can traditional and/or new views of women in ministry be supported by Scripture? Rice — Jesus was, in my opinion, the first Women’s Rights Advocate! He spoke to women others ignored; he ministered alongside women and honored the role of women in society. (John 4, Luke 10, John 11) Palacios — Scripture must be the foundation of the views we take in every subject. Yes. Genesis 1 says God made US in his image: men have a purpose; women have a purpose; and both are here to glorify God in fulfilling their purpose, i.e., gifts, talents, and callings. Dahne — Absolutely not. I recently experienced this when I was approached by my pastor to become a woman elder of our church. It would have meant me being the first woman elder of my church. I assured my pastor that I would pray about it and seek the advice of my husband. In addition I reached out and asked 10 men and women about what they thought in regards to women elders. These ten people are friends of mine that I have great respect for and know have an arsenal of knowledge about what the Word of God says. They are predominately in positions of leadership; pastors, ministry leaders, etc. My question to them was simply this: “Can a woman be an elder in her church?” The results were what I expected, half for and half were against. Each one of these precious people gave me scriptural and personal reasons for their answer. In the end, I made the decision based on what I felt God called me to do. Additionally, women in both the Old and New Testament had roles in leadership, including Deborah, Tamar, Rahab, Mary, Martha, Phoebe and Priscilla.
What impact does culture play as it relates to the acceptance of women in ministry? Rice — Culture is crucial to the acceptance of women’s ministry because it determines how one is perceived and how the message will be received. It’s important to be sensitive to details of a culture. If a person feels respected, they are much more likely to listen to the message and that is the most important thing. Palacios — I think our culture is ahead of us in its acceptance of women. This is to our advantage because as we embrace women before “lost” audiences, they will be easier to accept because they would have already witnessed it in “their” world. Dahne — Culture absolutely plays a huge role, because if a particular culture has a poisoned view of women, this viewpoint will translate into how and where they view the roles of women in ministry. The same is true for a culture that has a healthy attitude towards women. The culture in America is unique and there are so many different cultures, hence many different viewpoints. However, diversity does not necessarily help the argument of where and if women belong in ministry, but can actually complicate it. After all, where there is much diversity there is also much disagreement, especially the church.
LAURA DAHNE loves being a part of all women’s ministry that promotes Jesus, Inner-healing and Teaching! She believes that these three essential ingredients are also best when blended with laughter and worship. Her passion for inner-healing was the impetus for her first book, The Master Gardener, a book that ministers to women in the deepest places of their garden-hearts and confronts them with a dose of humorous truth. Laura feels free to get into women’s ‘emotional and spiritual junk’ because she knows that ‘it takes one to know one’ and because she knows that truth sets women free! Her motto is, “When women get real, women get healed!” To contact Laura visit her at LauraDahne.com.

Do women Pastors face the same challenges as men Pastors? What are some of those challenges? Rice — I can’t speak to these feelings first hand but I have ministered alongside women pastors and what strikes me foremost is their natural ability to relate and to nurture. A women may feel she needs to be strong in any position widely held by men only but the role of minister will automatically be different depending on which sex is filling that role. There is much room for each gender in God’s service. Palacios — Both male and female pastors face the greatest challenge of winning the lost. It is a mighty, unrelenting battle for whomever God has called to pastor. But thankfully, greater is He that is in thee than he who is in the world! And with God, all things are possible including reaching the lost! Dahne — Absolutely, I believe that men and women face similar challenges as pastors regardless of their gender. Perhaps one of the biggest challenges any pastor faces is found in encouraging people! It seems to me that many in the church are reluctant to be encouraged in the Word. There is so much negative feedback and fear in the world and both men and women can find themselves crippled by it. The second challenge I believe every pastor has is to be able to convince the Body that a daily, continual reading of the Bible is not only necessary but IMPERATIVE. It’s interesting to me that these two reasons are but the opposite side of the same coin. After all, when we are not in the Word then the Word is not in us, which leads to preoccupation with the cares of the world.
MERCY RICE and her husband, Jeff, have been residents of Homestead, Florida for the past thirteen years and will celebrate 23 years of marriage this April. Mercy has been delighted to serve as conference speaker, short term missionary, and as author of her BlogSpot www. mercyrice.com where she adds a bit of humor to the everyday stuff that makes our Christian walk the adventure of a lifetime! She readily admits a life of imperfection and dependence on God’s mercy and forgiveness. She sums up her calling this way: “Experiencing this level of undeserved grace in my life has birthed a new passion in me – the desire to share God’s grace with others. Not just those that don’t yet know Him, but those that, like me, have been in the family for a while but have not truly understood the level of God’s love for them and the real meaning of “unmerited favor.”
HEATHER PALACIOS is a prodigal kid of Jesus Christ, the wife of Potential Church Executive Pastor Raul Palacios, and the mother of two boys. Having live with a funky lung disease since childhood, Heather has learned that life is a gift and she is a grateful guest at the party. Heather also serves as a pastor at Potential Church and is known for her very real and straightforward style. That style is also evident on her website, www.leadhership.net. Through the website she encourages people daily to lead from wherever they are for whatever God wants.

Let’s Talk ... W
ell, we certainly have added fuel to the fire; but most importantly we hope we have ignited something in you that will make you seek the true and sincere call of God in your life – no matter what that calling may be. We are all called to spread the good news of Christ and each of us is a minister and armed to empower according to His Word.
Is gender a prerequisite for sharing the “Good News”? Does the Holy Spirit only operate in men? Can the Spirit ever do anything that contradicts the Word of God?
Why do some people place limitations on the ministry of women? Can the belief that women have no place in the pulpit be considered a disadvantage to men? Does it perpetuate the notion of gender inequity, male pride or the potential to devalue women?

Salvation Is Free T
he Bible says, “For all fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23 ESV) It also states, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16 NASB). Your decision to accept salvation is an act of faith that simply means you are positioning your heart towards His. If you want to take Jesus’ hand and accept His free gift of salvation, we invite you to pray this prayer with us. Heavenly Father, I come to You in prayer asking for the forgiveness of my sins. You have called me to yourself in the Name of Jesus. I confess with my mouth and believe with my heart that Jesus is Your Son, and that He died on the cross that I might be forgiven and have eternal life. Father, I believe that Jesus rose from the dead and I ask that You come in to my life right now and be my personal Lord and Savior. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and have sinned against You. Cleanse me of all unrighteousness and forgive me. Surround me with Your grace and true believers of Your Word who will help me on this journey. I thank You for the indwelling of Your Holy Spirit that gives me the power to overcome sin. Jesus I invite You to become Lord of my life to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. In Jesus Name, Amen! If you prayed this prayer with us, the Bible say’s “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9 ESV) We encourage you to join a local church so that today’s decision will be nurtured and that you may truly experience the power of God in your life.
