The Vision is Stretched!

In August 2007 (four years before this birth) I stepped away from a 24 year career in radio broadcasting. I spent half of that career in news/talk and the balance in gospel radio. Each broadcast entity taught me a tremendous wealth of information about the psyche, behaviors and understanding of people; while opening my eyes to the beauty of interviewing and interrogating a subject matter. Throughout that career, and in fact from junior high (middle) school, I have had a love for the published word whether it was published in books, magazines, anthologies, yearbooks or whatever I simply loved it. Yet, it floored me that someone who left radio to pen the next New York Times Bestseller and the next Tony-award winning play, ended up doing something else she loved – publishing magazines.

Oikonomia is the fourth in our family of Christianthemed magazines. The concept came about in my teasing a friend about one of our Advisory Board members. I serve as the Editor for Culinary Roots Food and Family Magazine, and in discussing the content for the publication I said to the Publisher Brenda L. Jackson, “You do know Vernita Williams is going to say, ‘well why won’t E. Claudette do a stewardship magazine for me?”

We laughed and continued our conversation. Over the next three days, the vision for OIKONOMIA MAGAZINE was laid out before me. Still, we were in the midst of stabilizing three other magazines and so surely this birth would be awhile off. Rather than focus on it, I created a dummy cover, placed it on my vision board and moved on.

Oikonomia had a purpose; because it kept talking until I said,”OKAY LORD! WE WILL DO IT NOW!” And so we did. Oikonomia is the Greek term that is used in Biblical teachings to define stewardship. While some believe stewardship to be relegated only to tithes and offerings, when we consider the fact that the term in its Greek origin means household (entity) management; then we become aware that it has a broader definition. Stewardship, oikonomia, is the purposed and determined strategic planning of one’s life in every aspect.

Oikonomia focuses on: health, relationships, spirit, church, finances, personal development, career and enjoyment.

In each issue, you will notice a strategic placement of information. Each section begins with an assessment sheet, where you will jot what you believe your current stewardship status is for that resprectiive area. The assessment page is then followed with professional articles and commentaries to provide needed advice, facts and information. Each section is then capped with a journaling page that is topped with an affirming statement that encourages you to write out what you have personally gleaned from the information in an empowering manner and a goal sheet that allows you to pull those things from the section and your thoughts that need to be applied to your life, so that you can get to work in sharpening your stewardship of that area. Finally, each issue is closed with prayer to encourage you as you work towards your goal.

I expect each issue of Oikonomia to challenge me (as the issues of our other publications have). I expect each issue to challenge you as well. I know that tithing is biblical but I don’t know how to begin. I was told to start off by giving 1% and work my way up to 10%. Is that correct?

What should I do? - N. Darling (Charlotte, NC) In Malachi 3:10, we are told to... I lovingly offer that you begin with the one tenth of your income. At first, you may

experience fear and some anxiety. This will also provide you with the opportunity to build your spiritual muscles of faith and trust. Over time, you will notice that all of your needs will be met and an increase in prosperity. For additional study on tithing, please read Deuteronomy 26.

2) I have always wanted to begin investing to increase my financial portfolio but my income is somewhat inconsistent? How can I do this on this type of income? – S. Terrell (Memphis, TN) Prayerfully, you are already living within your means on a spending plan (budget). Your spending plan helps to create an accurate financial picture of your income and living expenses. If your income is inconsistent, I suggest you begin with a mutual fund where you only have to invest $50 a month. However, before you begin there are some things you need to have in place such as a contingency fund, retirement plan, and savings. You should begin with a contingency fund and save up to six months of living expenses in that fund. This contingency fund should be saved in an interest bearing savings account. Depending on your status as an employee, self-employed, or business owner, you can look into Roth IRA, Simple IRA, and 401k/403b plans for retirement. Also, it is helpful to live by the 10-10-10-70 rule, it is to always 10% of income, save 10% of your income, invest 10% of your income, and live on 70% of your income.

The title of this article is not one for which I can take sole credit.

It arises out of the powerful penmanship of Gordon MacDonald author of Ordering Your Private World. Nestled in the pages of this literary work are lessons on stewardship not of money – but of self. The Bible declares in 1 Corinthians 4:2 (NKJV) 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. We are instructed to be faithful over all that we have been given.

However, we live in a constant paradox as it relates to this concept. For some reason, we spend more time managing what other people judge, based on perspective, and less time stewarding what we know God has promised.

Many of us live within a cage of unborn possibility. We view life from a posture that limits the greatness of God within us. Each day many of us arise to tackle the day that lies ahead living out a prescribed routine that does not fit our symptoms and are vastly misdiagnosed. There are those us who go to work every day living far beneath the potential that speaks within us. We hear our creative voices of excitement, change, and vigor – dreaming dreams greatness and grandeur only to “dumb down” the pervasive cry from within and “park” on possibility. We have allowed the limited perspective of those around us to shape our future and travel a road that ends at a destination designed by man and not by Divine destiny.

the failures of uncle, mom, dad or friend to become the benchmark for our life plan. God is expecting us to be faithful over the dream He has given us and not the vicarious venture others emanate through us. Their broken dreams cannot determine our destiny.

Crying out inside of you is a business, a new idea, a dream that we cannot allow others to defer. God has promised you a hope and a future and not only that – He promises to take care of you as you navigate the roadmap God laid before you. The moment has come to no longer reside in the Golden Cage of confinement but to live in the Freedom of opportunity. His plan is to open doors that no man can shut, elevate you to heights that man cannot reach, and give you more than you could have ever imagined. Why settle for “good” defined by man – when you can have “great” ordered by God??!!!

It is up to us to manage the intellectual prowess, creative genius, musical talent, powerful persistence, and drive bestowed upon us by God. The greatness of God flows through our commitment to live out the voice of victory within us. No longer live “Trapped in a Golden Cage!”

God has placed in each of us a greatness that must be shared with the world. We have been designed to live out a cause and a purpose that is empowered by the Master. His Word tells us that He has plans for us – a road map to future and hope. Unfortunately, many of us are living apathetically in a valuable golden cage. This cage is one that is beautiful and certainly of value.

To live in this cage provides the illusion of security, wealth and splendor.

To those who gaze, they can see how wonderfully made this cage is, and by spectator standards there isn’t anything better. Why complain about the golden cage, when you could be living in an old rusted silver cage???

For many people this cage looks different. It may be the five bedroom AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2011

home and three luxury cars that we drive for the approval of others, or the corner office we work hard daily to maintain, or even the position in the church where we feel widely accepted.

These are all golden cages, approved by spectators but for many it is illustrious imprisonment...A golden cage. It looks good to others but the occupants reside in limited possibility – living far less than what God has promised.

Deep inside you know the house doesn’t matter, the cars don’t matter, and the size of the office doesn’t matter they are all beneath the possibility of God. Why settle for the office when God wants you to have the company? Many of us have allowed the limited perspective of man to become our basis for living. We cannot allow

The Principle and Importance of Fasting in Your Spiritual Growth

Although the practice of fasting is not mentioned much today, it is a discipline that needs to be restored and given high priority in our Christian lifestyle.

When Jesus spoke to his disciplines about fasting He said, “When you fast” - not - “if you fast.” Fasting was regularly practiced in Biblical times and was usually done twice a week (as referenced in Luke 18:12) by one of the religious leaders of that time. Fasting enables the believer to deal more effectively with challenges and difficulties. The disciples learned this when they were unable to heal a young boy. Mathew 17:15- 18 says the boy’s father turned to Jesus after the disciples failed. Jesus then rebuked the demon causing the epilepsy and the child was immediately cured. Then Matthew 17:19 says the disciples went to Jesus privately and asked, “Why could we not cast it out?”

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you; If you have faith as a mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible for you. Howbeit, this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. Matthew 17:20-21 This passage of scripture shows that it is important to apply fasting to stubborn, difficult and demonic situations.

The actual definition for fasting is - “to abstain from food either partially or completely.” Here is why fasting works.

When we eat, an increased amount of blood is needed for digestive processes. When we exercise, a greater amount of blood is used in building up our muscles. But if we neither eat nor exercise, a greater amount of blood is available for mental and spiritual concentration. We need heightened spiritual concentration because our ability to perceive God’s direction in life is directly related to our ability to sense the inner promptings of His Spirit.

When we abstain from food or fast with the spiritual intent of seeking God for direction, there are many benefits we can expect. Isaiah 58:6 declares that fasting will “loose the bonds of wickedness, undo the heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke.” Isaiah 58:8 declares that fasting will cause healing to spring forth; and, Isaiah 58:14 says that when we fast God will feed us “with the heritage of Jacob.”

When you fast, make sure that it is acceptable to God. God warned that the fast that he would accept must be coupled with honoring the Sabbath, feeding the hungry, providing shelter for the homeless, clothing the naked and being kind and receptive to relatives. Submit to the spiritual discipline of fasting; begin by asking God to show you the type, timing, frequency and duration of the fast that you should undertake. Finally, thank Him for the benefits of fasting promised in Isaiah 58.

It is no wonder that men and women of God fasted throughout the Bible and received powerful results. In the Old Testament, Nehemiah 1:4 says that Nehemiah fasted over the condition of Jerusalem. Judges 20:26-28 says that the Israelites fasted to determine direction in battle. In II Chronicles 20:1-3, Jehoshaphat and all Judah fasted for deliverance in battle. Then later on in Acts 14:23, Paul & Barnabas prayed with fasting before leaving the elders they had appointed to oversee the church.

Power Beyond Positive Thinking Dr. Deborah L. Jones-Allen

Have you spent your entire life worrying and focusing on negative things? How many people do you know who live a meaningless life and fail to progress because of their negative thoughts that manifest in their speech? Today people want more. Some are searching to gain knowledge in order to discover answers to what is influencing their personal and business success.

The human desire to improve one’s existence is a direct result of internal dialogue.

It’s the ability to develop a habit to overcome the negatives and become skilled at expanding a positive frame of mind to achieve dreams. It is an internal attitude that expects positive outcomes.

Positive thinking is one method of mental shaping that sees the bright side of life, regardless of the negative circumstances that impedes the environment. And the ability to turn a situational thought around searching for the good and/or lesson deep within the dim and dark places of thought.

A cliché that helped me bring this concept to life was focusing on a glass that is half full- rather than the empty half of the glass. So it is with developing an optimistic mental attitude, it’s a “state of mind” that focuses on the positive. Taking lemons and making lemonade. If it’s that simple, then why is it so difficult for people to master this skill?

Those who have a positive frame of mind think about possibilities, growth, expansion and success. They are the people who expect happiness, health, love and meaningful relationships. It’s important to think in terms of “I can”, “I am able” and “I will succeed.” By using these expressions you are programming your inner audience, which are your thoughts, mind and emotions to be optimistic. At the same time you are

We live in a world where survival is a question of interpretation. In order to continue to live in the world you should be able to distinguish reality from mental escapism.

These are just normal reactions to bad situations. The only problem is when you start to get really affected by all the bad things that envelope you. The long term consequences for this are that you end up losing hope, doubting your own abilities and blaming yourself for all the negative things that are occurring in your private world.

Mahatma Gandhi an Indian Philosopher said, “That a man is a product of his own thoughts, what he thinks, he will become”. As difficult as it may be, a positive attitude is a requirement if you want to continue living a healthy, meaningful and successful life. How do you do this? Do away with your ants.

Maybe it’s time to let go of past failures and realize that you have set up these roadblocks that impedes your achievement. Yes, the enemy lies within you. As a man thinks in his heart so is he. Painstaking as it may sound you are being held down by the weight of your subconscious. So make a conscious effort to keep your thoughts clear of clutter. Your thoughts matter.

Attitudes and thoughts do not change overnight, they need strong determination. You have to do the work; ultimately you are responsible for your own success. In other words, you have to hit a delete switch within your thoughts and turn off the

One thing I have found in my 30 years of leadership and management is that, training and conditioning is important to the development of an individual. Typically, most people look far beyond themselves when it comes to finding ways to develop in the arena of character and self worth.

Do you remember the time, when you were fearless and brave? When you could fly like Superman and beat up the bad guy?

Show Me What You See! My daughter and I took her kids shopping recently for school shoes. It was interesting to watch as my grandson, the All American boy, picked out his Star Wars Gym Shoes that light up....typical for a four year old, right?

The challenge came when my six year old granddaughter Jessica began to look at the myriad of shoes on display.

Her job was to pick out a pair of gym shoes and dress shoes for everyday wear. We had no problem with the gym shoes, retro style with peace signs, rainbow colors, and daisies, all painted on a denim canvas.

The problem occurred when it came to the dress shoes that she could wear daily as well as to church. The six year old went straight a pair of pink glittered flats next to a pair of plain silver flats.

While nice indeed, I tried to explain to Jessica that the pink glitter would not be appropriate for everyday school wear. When she asked what appropriate meant, I had to explain that the shoes she picked were not good for everyday wear. Jessica immediately responded, “I don’t understand, this is the shoe that a princess wears every day, right Nana?” I was speechless. Then I said, “Yes Jessica, you are right”.

You see, I had forgotten that Jessica, like most little five and six year old girls, sees herself as a princess. She 28 OIKONOMIA MAGAZINE

walks like a princess, she dances like a princess, and she likes to dress up all the time like a princess. If she had her way she would wear lace and frills everyday to school and have tea time instead of recess. The most interesting thing to me is she has always been like that. She came into our lives just like that. No one had to tell her she was a princess; she already knew it. All the princess movies she has seen in her six years have validated her belief system.

You might say, ah that’s so cute, but there is a lesson in this scenario.

Consider this, you were wonderfully and fearfully made and marvelous are the works of God (Psalm 139).

The Creator always knows why he made the created thing. God does not make mistakes; His intent is always manifested in His creation. We must begin to realize that our journey of personal development begins on the inside of each of us. You must be able to see and at least identify your strengths and weaknesses. This is always the starting point or focal point of all change.

Maybe we should do like the characters in the fairy tales. Get up, go to the mirror and say, MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL, SHOW ME WHAT YOU SEE! Always remember, a lot of what you see is based on what you are looking for. I leave you with my favorite prayer.

Oh yes, the world and all of its trappings came and took away your view of the abundant life. Why would Jesus say, “I came that you would have life, and have it more abundantly”, if it were not true?

Suppose you kept the view of yourself that matches God’s view. Can you imagine going to the mirror and seeing God himself looking back at you? We are His image and likeness. How is it that we can go to the mirror and some of us see absolutely nothing of value?

Could it be that something or someone contaminated your view of yourself?

One of the worst aspects of life is the times when you’re seemingly stuck in a rut and can’t find the EXIT sign. I’ve been there; in more ways than one. A substantially more painful condition is to be in a place or season in life where you feel utterly... lost. I’ve been there, too. Many things that used to make sense and were settled in your heart have been pried open again - and wider than ever! You live with uncertainty, constant second-guessing and all but wishing you could climb back under the cozy covers of what used to be.

Organizing Your Life by Enjoying Simple Living.

When I talk about enjoying simple living, I’m not referring to an easy, padded life devoid of conflict, heart aches, or headaches. I’m referring to less of the conflict that rages because of our own choices, immaturity, and self-inflicted stress.

1) Don’t over-complicate - simplifying your life

2) Don’t try to “do it all” at once.

Remember this, you can make a lot more progress in a small amount of time than you may realize. This is not a race so don’t be so anxious to get ahead.

3) Do today what you need to do today.

When I wake up each day, I ask God to help me do what I need to do today only that will make the most of this day.

4) Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn to trust the process.

It’s acceptable and normal to feel discouraged about how you’re doing and what still needs to be done. The important factor is to never quit. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall as long as the number of times you get back up is equivalent.

5) Focus on managing one area in which you struggle.

Either start with something you can easily overcome or with your biggest

and most pressing challenge; whichever seems do-able to you right now.

As you can handle it, cover other areas.

I’m a multi-tasker and usually tackle more than one task at a time, even in the midst of being overwhelmed. Do what you feel will take you in the right direction.

Simple Action Plan Equip yourself in advance with your plan of action from start to finish. Seeing the complete project plan in your mind or on paper will eliminate road blocks.

Imagine the difference between an actor’s presentation of a script being recited comfortably from memory and a script read for the first time. Beauty and grace flow from the delivered words of the prepared actor.

Organizing your life can be similar.

Understanding and imprinting plans, skills, and techniques into your mind, or at least clearly on paper, will help you learn how to organize your life with the same efficiency and eloquence.

Planning doesn’t require special training. Start with the big picture by figuring out what you want your home, relationships, and life to look like. Then, work your way backwards and fine tune as you work out the details.

What the Bible says about time management is simple: it is to your great advantage. Paul insisted, “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15, 16). All of us have been given resources, and how we organize and spend them determines how well we achieve the plans, goals, and tasks God has given each of us to accomplish.

Time management is really activity management, because activities are what you plug into the day’s time slots. And, those selected activities are the steps toward achieving the most of what God wants you to accomplish for Him.

There are many issues involved in time management, but here we only have time to explain a few key principles. Read on. Success is just around the corner.

Make a List Remember that time management flows out of goal setting (link) and plans. The sharper your goals are, the easier to organize your time. Make a list of everything you need to do to carry out your goals. Break big tasks down into small more manageable tasks.

Estimate how long it will take you to do each item.

This practice of writing down the tasks will remove the frustration of trying to remember everything that you need to do. If you don’t write down your tasks, you are bound to forget some things. Furthermore, you will worry and waste time trying to remember what you forgot, rather than investing that time in creative thinking and focused execution.

Prioritize After you make the list, then prioritize the tasks based on your most important goals. Do first things first. Shove less important tasks down the priority list. Do one item at a time. Your conscious mind can only process one thing at a time, and that means we can only focus on one thing at a time.

If you have multiple projects in front of you that you are trying to do all at once, your attention becomes fractured, and you become panicky. Consequently, pick up one part of the project, focus and finish it, put it aside, and go on to the next. When you get those overwhelmed feelings, it just means you AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2011

The purpose of scheduling activities is to break down a project into discrete tasks, order those tasks in the logical sequence of steps needed to complete the project, and then plot the steps against time or target dates. Allow enough time for each step or task.

Organize your tasks for the day, week, month, year, etc. For example, Esmie and I take two or three days at the first of every year, go off to a place away from distractions, pray, and make our major yearly goals. We get the “big picture” first, and then begin to break the big goals down into monthly and weekly tasks.

Interruptions sometimes crop up, and you cannot completely finish a project because of a deadline imposed by another project, or an emergency. But, the main point is to set aside a block of time, and focus on one task at a time. Additionally, sometimes plans must be changed. Make allowances for interruptions.

Beware of the urgent crowding out the important. Many times people will frantically come to you with a small problem, and take your time away from the important thing you need to do.

Guard against it. Locate time wasters, and avoid them.

Schedules and Deadlines Some type of calendar or day-timer is imperative for time management.

The appointments you make, the deadlines you face, the projects to start, the places you need to be – all of these activities need to be written in a calendar. The calendar, then, becomes your schedule. Schedules are merely plans that specify time periods within which activities are to be accomplished.

Allow enough time for each step or task. Some tasks can be done in parallel, but sometimes one step needs to be finished before the next step can be started. It is helpful to have a large calendar or white board in the office or planning area, and then write down all the necessary scheduled events so all can see. Mark down all the vacations, important events, deadlines, who is assigned what tasks, etc.

Make clear who is to report to whom, when, and how. Don’t give a task to one person, and then give it to another person. The first person will feel humiliated.

• Determine when you will follow up and check how things are going.

Decide what you are going to check.

Put the inspection times in your calendar. People have a tendency to put greater focus and effort on what you inspect rather that what you expect.

Reward for good results, and give correction when needed.

Delegating Responsibilities What the Bible says about delegation can be seen in the case of Jethro advising Moses to divide up the work, select good people to lead and judge the Israelites, yet under Moses’ supervision (Exodus 18:1-27).

Many things can be done by others, which frees up your time to focus on those things that only you, the leader, can do. Here are some guidelines.

• Have your secretary, wife, etc. answer the phone, open the mail, and do the routine matters.

• Give adequate and clear instructions, training, and expectations to the person, and then let them do the work.

Don’t micromanage by looking over their shoulders and telling them how to do every detail.

• Make sure you give the authority to the person to carry out the assignment.

• Guard against the pendulum effect, which is drifting from you doing everything, to complete abdication of knowing what is going on.

The Diary A very helpful tool is to keep a daily, running diary in some sort of tablet.

Write down important thoughts, what you did, people you interacted with, decisions you made, phone numbers, addresses, results from appointments, agreements you made, and opportunities you observed. This gives you a record to go back to when needed. It is your “memory” of important things.

With these insights from what the Bible says about time management, Esmie and I pray that you will achieve even greater things for the cause of Christ. We wish your efficiency to increase, and your stress to decrease – all to the glory of God.

Balance and Stress, Form a Pyramid for a Healthy You Javatis Midgett

Have you ever wondered what brings on stress? According to Encarta Dictionary, the definition of stress is, “the mental, emotional, or physical strain caused, e.g. by anxiety or overwork. It may cause such symptoms as raised blood pressure or depression.” To add to this definition, I believe the lack of work in certain areas of life will also cause stress.

Now, what about balance? According to Encarta Dictionary, balance is, “a state in which various parts form a satisfying and harmonious whole and nothing is out of proportion or unduly emphasized at the expense of the rest.” In my opinion, this is what life is all about.

My philosophy of life follows a pyramid of balance. The pyramid consists of spirituality, health (mental and physical), relationships, vocation, and money. By following this pyramid, I have found that my life has greatly improved. I rarely get stressed; and, when I do, it’s because I’m giving one area more or less time than needed.

There’s priority with this balance pyramid. The priority goes as followed: 1. Spirituality (faith) 2. Health (mental and physical) AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2011

3. Relationships (family and friends) 4. Vocation (work that you are born to do) 5. Money

the proper sleep is a must. If sleep is disrupted constantly, this can affect your overall health. Sleep is when our body revitalizes itself to be ready to go for the next day.

Relationships

Faith Spirituality is first because there’s no worse feeling than not having a purpose to exist. This is the reason we get up in the morning. I’m reminded that we walk by faith. Without faith, the other four areas are pointless.

Health Health consists of our mental and physical capacity. The reason health comes before relationships is because, without it you aren’t able to help those around you. If you are mentally and physically unhealthy, you can destroy your family by being negative or lack the necessary energy to enrich the relationships that surround you.

Also, being physically healthy which includes exercising and eating properly makes you feel better about yourself and those around you. According to an article from www. powertoendstroke.org, “the benefits of eating a well-balanced meal can significantly impact many areas of your life, including weight, energy level and how you sleep.” Getting

There’s nothing more important than people other than your faith and health. Next to your faith and health, there’s nothing more important than people. Everything we do is for people. Without people, nothing else really matters.

The relationships we hone can greatly enhance our wellbeing; whether it’s your spouse, kids, friends, co-workers, or a complete stranger. It’s nearly impossible to accomplish anything without the help of people.

Vocation What we choose to do for a living can make or break our lives. Vocation is the pinnacle of occupations. Vocation is a calling. If we are in the wrong vocation, our balance will always be affected. It’s not to say that we can’t muster through the tribulations to do what we have to; however, when we are performing our calling, the work seems effortless. We are happiest when this occurs.

Money There are only three things we can do with money, spend it, save it, or give it away! By giving this area the proper focus, we can complete our balance. You don’t have to be an expert in this category; just gain the basic knowledge of setting up a budget, spend less than you make, and investing. The beautiful thing about money is it’s a tool that can really enrich your life as well as those around you. However, the opposite holds true if we fall in love with money and use it for the wrong reasons.

The wonderful thing about this pyramid balance is, if followed; you can eliminate a great deal of stress and improve the vital areas in your life.

Warning, if you try to rearrange the order or disregard one of the pillars you will notice an increased amount of stress in your life.

For example, if you place money ahead of family and friends, you will eventually lose them. You will also notice that your spouse will start to nag about quality time in the beginning; if the lack of attention prolongs enough, the nag will eventually lead to separation. All the money in the world won’t make a lonely spouse happy. However, if you implement this balance pyramid in your life and follow it consistently, you will see a drastic improvement in the “whole” you.

The longer you stay on board, the stronger your balance will become. This is not to say you won’t be pulled in one direction or another from time to time, because you will; however, as long as you recognize the problem and get back on board, you will be fine.

If you just found out that you have Diabetes, you probably have a lot of questions and one of those questions might be, what is Diabetes and how am I suppose to manage my life?

The CDC has estimated that 1 out of 3 Americans will have the disease by 2050. Diabetes is a disease that makes it difficult for your body to convert food into energy your cells need to survive and thrive. This results in the sugar, or glucose, in your bloodstream rising to levels higher than normal. Here’s how it works. When you eat, your body breaks down the sugars, starches and other foods into a fuel called glucose, or blood sugar. This sugar then enters the bloodstream where it travels to tissue cells in all parts of the body. The glucose is either used for immediate energy or stored in the liver, muscle or fat for later use. However for this sugar to get into the body’s tissue cells and be used, it needs insulin. Normally, the body senses the rising level of sugar in the blood during digestion. The pancreas, a gland behind the stomach, then releases insulin into the bloodstream.

The insulin enables the sugar to enter the cells, keeping the level of sugar in the blood normal. In people with Diabetes, food is still digested into sugar, but because insulin is absent or too low. Sugar builds up higher than normal levels. This will result in the following symptoms: n

Feeling weak, tired and dizzy

Blurred Vision

n

Excessive Thirst

n

Frequent urination

n

Sudden weight loss

n

Lack of ability to concentrate

n

Increased Hunger

n

n

Heart disease

n

Stroke

n

Nerve damage

n

Sexual problems

To control your blood sugar, keep in at a healthy range and to live with diabetes realistically, you will need to make some life style changes which will require lots of work, dropping some old bad habits and picking up new ones. It is important that you understand and follow these activities:

Avoid a diet high in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol

n

Include plenty of fruits, vegetables and grain in diet

n

Get regular physical exercise (TALK WITH YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER BEFORE STARTING)

n

After getting clearance exercise three times a week for at least 20-30 minutes each time

n

Cope with stress

n

Keep all Health Care provider appointments

n

Talk with someone you trust

n

Keep track and/or log your blood sugar

n

Get your feelings out in the open

Sexual problems

n

n

Listen to music

n

Slow healing of skin infections, cuts, and sores

Keep blood sugar between 80-120 mg/dl before meals

Loss of coordination

Keep blood sugar between 100-140 mg/dl at bedtime

n

Numbness or tingling in the feet or hands

Bring the log to all your appointments

n

Excessive weight gain

n

Get eye exam

n

Visit a podiatrist

n

Work with diabetes educator

Get a glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test at least twice a year

There are three forms of Diabetes, called type 1, type 2 and gestational.

Type 1 is usually diagnosed around the time of puberty and causes the destruction of the insulin producing cells in the pancreas by the body’s own immune systems which means the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to handle the sugar in the bloodstream. With type 2, the pancreas may make insulin, but the body’s cells have trouble using it properly. Gestational Diabetes sometimes affects women who are pregnant but usually goes away after they deliver.

Women who experience gestational diabetes are at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

With all three types of diabetes, the number one factor is to keep your blood sugar under control which makes you feel better. You will have a brighter mood, fewer body aches, better weight maintenance and more consistent blood sugar levels. On the other hand without proper control, diabetes can take a heavy toll on the body and complications can occur such as: n

Blindness

Kidney disease

The efforts you take in keeping your blood sugar in normal range and following the above steps to take care of yourself on a daily basis can greatly improve your life in the long run and will result in fewer complications.

It’s Time for Restoration!

Life “the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally.” –Webster’s Dictionary Life is a topic discussed on any street corner, coffee shop, hair salon, church, or etc. It is discussed as if it’s a drama or a sitcom we all are actors in; with no say so in regards to what happens on a day by day basis. Because many mindsets have been conditioned to be “spectators” and not “participators” in the game called life, many people accept the conditions of their mind, body, and spirit as if it is an inheritance they must maintain and should never change. They do not fully understand that their life is a mere reflection of their own thoughts and choices; and that they have the ability to make changes at any time.

The state of the country is a direct reflection of the thoughts of our leaders. As “spectators” we have chosen to rely on suggested governmental guidelines in regards to what we put in our bodies, what we put in our minds, and what we should ingest spiritually. Controlled by mass media in the form of advertising, subliminal messages, etc., we have become insensitive to our own well-being and no longer know how to listen to our bodies. If we pay close attention to the part within the definition of life that states “the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally,” we will discover that life provides us with the mere AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2011

framework. We need to fill in our lives based on what is within us. How do we do that? It’s best to consult with the original manufacturer of our bodies, minds and spirits - God. Many parents do the best they can providing our children with wisdom and knowledge, food, and the word of God. But we must begin to take responsibility for what we ingest mentally, physically and spiritually to assure our purpose and destinies are fulfilled. If we don’t, we find ourselves imbalanced in our lives and our surroundings will eventually reflect this imbalance through things like: children misbehaving, obesity, sickness and disease, emotional outbursts, loss of energy, etc. How do we become so imbalanced? We lose our alignment with God and thus we need RESTORATION! What does restoration mean? It’s the time in which we simply stop, get off the merry go round of life, and look at all that is going on around us. It’s a time that we stop blaming others and begin to look within ourselves for the answers. It’s a

time for reflection, contemplation and meditation then deciding to change.

Pastor Tim Smoot says we often miss a call from ourselves to restoration. “It’s not that some people have willpower and some don’t. It’s that some people are ready to change and others are not.”

The first step toward change is awareness. The ability to look at the person you really are and not who you think you are. Decide what serves you and begin making changes to those things that do not fit your life well one by one. Acknowledge that you are in the state you are in as a result of people, places, and things you have allowed to fill out the framework in your life. Look at the people surrounding you. They are reflections of you! Pay attention to the quality of food you are eating, the quality of music you are listening to and the quality of materials you are reading or watching. Does it provide you with good health, happiness, peace, love, or joy? If it does not, then it may be toxic and you then need

to begin making changes. Only you can decide the course of your journey. You can make your journey as smooth as you want or as jagged. The choice is yours. Always keep in mind, choice is powerful and Self Mastery is Amazing!

Have you ever wondered if “honesty is really the best policy?” At some point, couples in every romantic relationship have “the talk” where they spill the beans on their pasts. It’s a chance to come clean and get all the skeletons out of the closet. But how much information is truly necessary?

How much truth is too much? For instance does a woman have to be completely honest about every romantic relationship she’s been in?

There is a yes and no answer to this issue. Yes, it can be good to honestly share about the major relationships of your past (usually three to five is average). It can help you to understand each other more by discussing and analyzing past relationships, like: what brought you together with past loves, what caused the separations, and anything in between that you feel will not threaten your current relationship in any way. This will show your mate that you

trust him enough to be upfront with him and that you no longer carry feelings for those you were involved with before him.

You could, and should also talk candidly with your mate about any hurtful relationship experiences you may have had--abuse, rape, or childhood molestation. Don’t hide any of this from him. It wasn’t your fault that someone did such an awful thing to you. Any decent mate

We all hate rejection—even the subtle forms of it that can crop up every day--a broken promise, punishing silence, a sarcastic remark, or a halfhearted peck on the cheek when you were dying for a passionate embrace.

All these can feel like a slap in the face and a brutal assault on your self-esteem. And, of course, when that happens we vow to put our guard up next time. There are dangers that come as a result of the man being silent especially when he has been given dominion and the power to create as well as control his environment. Matthew16:19 states, “That whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” All of heaven is backing you in any decision that you make as a man of God. Yet men remain silent and wonder why things are the way they are in “your” world. All around you people are thriving, they are successful, and they are demanding, decreeing, and commanding things in “their” world to come to pass. You see it happening but still you remain silent and miss out on all of the blessings and favor of God that you could have been experiencing had you not been silent.

There is another peril that is equal to if not greater than being silent and that is being absent; consequently we have the perils of a missing man.

I have been given a wonderful revelation and it is this: “The power to define is the power to fulfill.” How can you become who you are to be if you do not know who you are? One of the greatest woes of our society is that we have a multitude of men who have no idea who they are. How many years have you lost trying to find your way, trying to discover your true identity? Is there anything I can do to make you show up and stay just for me?

Fathers of all nations, colors, races, creeds and religions are leaving their families. Why I ask did you leave me? Was it my eyes, did you think that they looked upon you with shame? Was it my smile, did it make you feel guilty because you knew you would cause me pain? Was it the fear of the future? Did you not realize that I would grow up to be a man some day? And that I did, but a man devoid of understanding; a man unlearned, unsure, and even uncertain of his future because the man I wanted to be walked out on me.

What are the penalties that a man must pay, what are the perils of a man that has never learned the simple act of commitment?

Is GIRL Time Overriding God?

I had a friend with whom I once shared a lot of great activities: Girlz Nite Out, Sunday school class, worship service, brunches, a cozy fire at her place while watching her favorite TV programs and rentals. She had a convertible we drove into Memphis with the wind whipping through our hair, blasting our favorite music, waving at truck drivers. We celebrated her birthday on Beale Street, outdoors, over alligator bites and conversation with the server who had a following on Facebook.

Lauren* was the kind of friend you could never get enough of! We were opposites of each other in many ways but were in similar places spiritually and socially. Fast forward to less than one year later: no more Girlz Nite Out, I no longer darken her doorstep. I watch my own favorite shows and rentals at home and the wind in my hair feels just as liberating in my own car.

What happened to me and my Ace???

Me. I happened. I looked around one day and thought: My friend and I are both single Christian women who use each other to fill a male void in our lives. We could not stand Friday night at home alone and had to have plans all the time. Our antics left us wistfully aware of our aloneness when she dropped me off at home and headed back to her place. At the risk of sounding like I’m saying that a woman can only enjoy certain adventures if she has a man, I’m not. What I am saying is to be sure of the motives behind every relationship in your life.

Is this not the first girlfriend to drop you when a potential mate comes along? You are a bookmark at a page in her life she can come back to if and when things don’t work out with a man. Lauren did it to me more than once. Really, she had left no room at the inn for another significant other. . . and neither had I! If we’re not careful, Girl 58 OIKONOMIA MAGAZINE

Time can override God Time. Our single associations can dictate the tone and direction of other relationships, sometimes starving them for time and nourishment. We overlook the wisdom of married, more mature women who don’t have much time to whip their hair back and forth on the highway.

When life is in balance, there is time to zip around with that BFF and a budding relationship with a man and time for self-improvement, reflection and time to conquer loneliness. Life happens in the here and now; you are not to kill time with whoever happens to be available while waiting for something better to come along.

When I realized my personal life was out of balance, I began to make some changes. Lauren had no clue what I was talking about! Staying home, going out alone sometimes. What???

She just didn’t understand why I no longer jumped when she made plans.

By examining myself, I realized that as friends we were unevenly yoked: when

Lauren could not control others around her, she declared a spiritual defect in their lives. When I said I didn’t want to go out and spend money so often anymore and that I was neglecting my responsibilities at home, she quipped that it doesn’t cost anything to pick up the phone, yet she’d never call. She was a text pro and only picked up the phone when I didn’t text back soon enough, wanting to know where I was and what I was doing and didn’t I get her text.

now enjoy my houseplants and completing those lingering projects around the house. I have not stopped riding on Life’s Highway. Instead I trust the driving to the One who will get me to my destination in perfect balance. *Not this person’s real name

Now ladies, if our girlfriend tells us a man is treating her like this, you can just imagine what we’d have to say to her: Girl, tell him where to go and what to do when he gets there. We’d tell her she is far more precious than rubies and we would shout and feel great about being single! Tell me, do these standards change when we deal with friends? If so, why?

As for Lauren, I’ve learned that if I don’t agree to one more Girlz Nite Out “to catch up” then we don’t communicate at all. I miss her sometimes but I

I want to know what love is. I want to know what it is to relate to myself, my parents, my children, my friends, my beloved and My God in such a way that all becomes intricately and explosively powerful. I want to know the love of relationships that are strong they build a legacy that outlasts time. Have I been a good steward of the relationships in my life? Make a separate list of your talents, gifts, and resources. Once we know what we have, we can now work on using it to increase the quality of our lives. Deadly Sins of Investing:

Don’t make ANY of these investment mistakes...

Far too many people try to take investment matters into their own hands and suffer from - poor performance - it is a deadly wealth killing disease. This often happens from making one or several of these common mistakes:

a) It reaches our target sell price and we want to lock in gains. b) It hits our maximum loss threshold. The investment is sold to minimize losses. c) We simply find a better alternative for our investment dollars. Sometimes when we are fully invested, we sell off a few holdings here or there to free up room for better opportunities.

1. Having too many portfolio holdings. Many people simply believe there is strength in numbers. You hear all the time, - Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. While it is true you should diversify, you should be on the guard against “di-worse-ification” – having too many positions. A portfolio can be diversified having as few as ten holdings. Anything north of 50 positions can simply be too many to keep track of.

d) It makes an unethical or immoral decision that keeps us from wanting to continue to own shares (i.e. they start producing a product or service that violates our faith or they donate money to causes that are not in line with our Christian values).

I once met a Harvard MBA who was a successful CFO for a fish company. He claimed to have all the answers when it came to investing. When I looked at his portfolio, no lie, he owned over 250 different stocks. I asked him how he kept track of all these and his answer was simply “I don’t…” If a Harvard MBA can make this mistake, everyone else could as well.

2. Having no exit strategy or plan to sell if things go wrong. Finding the right investment to buy is only one side of the equation. Many people buy an investment and hold on for too long because of sentimental reasons (they worked there; their parents or grandparents owned it, etc. etc.). Fall in love with people not stocks!

3. Buying what was hot last week. I often see investors have far too much exposure to sectors or investments that have been hot recently (for example basic materials, emerging markets, etc.).

This is a recipe for disaster as markets go through cycles and it often becomes a case of buying high rather than buying low. If a sector or investment has risen rapidly, there is often a high probability of a pullback.

mining ETFs does NOT mean you are diversified! Same goes for owning multiple mutual funds that are buying the same types of companies.

There is a term called correlation.

This simply means that investments that are similar (highly correlated) tend to move in a similar direction. By having too much overlap in a portfolio, you often exposure yourself to more risk than you bargained for.

Instead look to broaden your investment universe by looking for large company stocks, mid and small company stocks, international, emerging market, fixed income, real estate, precious metals, and other commodities to name a few.

5. Having too many extremely small positions. I have seen far too many investors take a shotgun approach to investing. They buy 100 shares here and

there and end up paying too much in fees and commissions. Have a bigger picture approach and utilize a discount broker to minimize your transaction costs.

6. Improper use of inverse ETFs or mutual funds. Inverse holdings (those designed to go up while the market goes down) are extremely volatile securities. Make sure you do not treat these as long-term investments but rather use them sparingly as a short-term hedge. If you utilize this strategy, make sure you monitor frequently and have stop-loss measures in place.

7. Paying too much attention to the news and overacting based on emotions. Let’s face it: we are living in difficult times. Unless you are old enough to remember the Great Depression, chances are these are by far the most economic times you have ever seen.

Do You Know What Your Insurance Needs Are? With the insurance industry being one of the largest and most successful industries in America, it has a major impact on our society because it provides employment for thousands of people; as well as being one of the largest sources of investment funding in the nation. One way insurance companies do this is to take a portion of the monthly insurance premiums we pay and invest that money into the global economy (Stock Market Foreign and Domestic).

So what exactly is insurance and how does it benefit the general public?

Insurance is a form of transferring loss (risk) from one party to another such as from an individual to a company, which in turn spreads the cost of the loss to many individuals since only a small number of people within the large group of people who have the same insurance will suffer a loss at any given time.

name a few. In order to determine what type of insurance and coverage is right for you and your family? The first thing you have to do is take a serious assessment of your current situation with an eye towards the future. For example what if you’re single with no children you may feel as though you don’t have a need for life insurance; however if you plan on getting married and having a family one day now would be a perfect time to purchase life insurance when the cost would be lower allowing you to obtain the amount of coverage you’ll need once you have a family.

As a part of assessing your situation you need to review the benefits that your employer is providing, (if any at all) and are you maximizing what is available to you. Does your job offer health insurance for the entire family, or just you? Now let’s look at your spouse’s employer; do they offer a family plan or just individual coverage? Having looked at both plans which one offers the best

value for your entire family. Why would each spouse pay for coverage at their job if one employer will cover the entire family for less cost and equal or greater value? Here is a point to consider maximize every free and inexpensive benefit your employer offers; however it is still your responsibility to make sure that your family has the proper amount of protection not your employers (they have their families properly protected).

Let’s take a look at some specific types of insurances and how they work and what’s their purpose.

Health insurance is a policy between an insurance company and an individual or their sponsor (e.g. an employer, government program). The policy can be renewable every year, or month as per the terms of the contract. The type and amount of health care coverage provided should be specified in writing as a part of the contract and a copy given to the insured.

Long-term care insurance is insurance most people feel is only for elderly people, nothing can be further from the OIKONOMIA MAGAZINE 67

truth. About 40% of people receiving long-term care are between 18 and 64.

Long-term care insurance is designed to cover the costs of services, which are not covered by traditional health insurance or Medicare. This can include services in your home or a variety of facility and community settings that can offer assistance with Activities of Daily Living such as dressing, bathing, eating, toileting, continence, transferring (getting in and out of a bed or chair), and walking. Long-term care insurance is also an excellent way to protect your assets since these services can quickly deplete the savings of the individual and/or their family.

Home owners insurance is the type of insurance that combines personal insurance protections, including losses occurring to one’s home, its contents, loss of its use (additional living expenses), or loss of other personal possessions of the homeowner, as well as liability insurance for accidents that may happen at the home or at the hands of the homeowner within the policy territory. If you live in a flood zone you need to purchase flood insurance also to protect against flood damage to your home.

Renters insurance is another form of insurance that is purchased by tenants, to protect against stolen or damaged items, and potential liabilities to the living space they are renting.

Car insurance’s primary use is to provide financial protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from a traffic accident and against liability that could also arise from an accident. In most places it is illegal not to have car insurance when driving a motor vehicle on public roads.

There are different types of coverage you can purchase such as No Fault, Liability, Property Damage, Personal Injury Protection (PIP), and Uninsured Motorist Coverage. Make sure you know what is required by the State that you live in and what the minimum requirements are.

In addition life insurance is used to pay for final expenses for the deceased, as well as providing a means for paying off any debt that may have been left behind. All types of life insurance are Term policies in one way or another, some just have added features ( you pay for) which will allow you to accumulate cash, borrow money, or adjust the payment amount.

Level Term is the simplest type of life insurance. A level term life policy is designed to pay a specific lump sum to whoever was designated as beneficiary upon the death of the insured provided the insured dies within the time frame of the policy and policy payments were current.

Whole Life insurance provides protection for the entire life of the insured, it builds cash value which the policy owner can borrow or is entitled to in the event the policy is surrendered. Any unpaid loans will be taken from the death benefit upon the death of the insured.

The cash value usually does not start to grow until the third or fifth year and it grows taxed deferred.

How this type of insurance works is found in Romans 10:8-10(NASB) 8But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

There is no greater insurance policy than that and the true cost of this insurance was paid by Jesus Christ on Calvary, Luke 23:33(NKJV). All that is required of us is to have faith and confess that faith and eternal life in heaven is ours. NOW THAT’S INSURANCE EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE!!!

Universal Life Insurance (Flexible Premium Adjustable Life) is the type of policy where you have the ability to increase or decrease your premium payments (however there is a minimum amount that needs to be paid to keep the policy active). These policies have two parts to them an insurance side and a cash value side. The insurance side is Annual Renewable Term Insurance, and The Cash Account accumulates on a tax-deferred basis each year and either earns a guaranteed interest rate of 3% to 5.5%.

Group Life Insurance is obtained through an insurance company picked by the employer and has a limit to how much coverage is offered with no regard for your family’s needs. This type of policy may only offer coverage while you’re employed; and is probably an ART (ANNUAL Renewable Term) policy you have to renew every year at open enrollment, and the premium may

In times when many are employed in freelance or virtual contracts the question of how to make a budget when you don’t have a regular paycheck, comes up a lot.

The fact is, it is more difficult to set up a budget when you never know how much you are going to make each month – but it still can and should definitely be done. I happen to think it is far more important for those with irregular income to set up a budget because of the quick damage that can be caused if you don’t. You can really get into a mess by having a few prosperous months and assuming that it will stay that way. Yet, when things go back to “normal,” you can’t adjust back to those “normal” spending levels.

How to set it up 1. Get the average of your last 12 months’ earnings - add them up either in a spreadsheet or piece of paper. Once added, divide the total by 12 to get your average monthly earnings for the year. (If you have 24 months of data, you may consider using that). This is the figure that if everything stays the same the next 12 months, you should be able to use to set up your budget.

But, as we all know, things rarely stay the same and even if they did, you could have a few of the low months in a row that could make things quite challenging.

2. Multiply by 0.8 (or less) - So, for added protection and safety, I like to multiply the average monthly earnings by 0.8 (or less for more safety).

If after tweaking your budget and cutting your expenses like crazy, you still can’t live off of the amount you are getting, then multiply it by 0.9, but the higher you go, the higher the chance of things not working out.

3. Open a buffer savings account - This is an account that is going to function a little like an emergency fund, but its sole purpose is to store up the surplus earnings on good months, so that you can pay the bills on the bad months. It can be a savings account or money market account, but it should be money that you can easily access and ideally it would be at the same bank you have your checking account – so you can make quick transfers between the accounts.

4. Try it out - Using our example above, we are going to live off of $772 each month. So assuming January is the same, we would have a $78 surplus ($850-$772) which we would then transfer to our surplus account. The Challenge

The hardest part of all this is being disciplined enough to stick the money into the surplus account and not using

it to buy a new entertainment center. It is so easy to think that after a couple good months, it will always stay that way. But, as they say, the best time to put a new roof on your house is when it is sunny. It is a lot easier filling an account up with money after a good month, than after a bad month.

The Flaw And the truth is, while I think this is the best way to try to budget when you don’t have a regular paycheck, it is far from perfect. I mean in reality it is very unlikely that your earnings are going to be EXACTLY the same as they were 12 months ago. Sometimes things trend upwards or downwards over years.

But, even though it isn’t perfect this is the best way that I know how to budget in situations like this.

Can I Count On You To Be There?

A pivotal point of consideration in a church’s ability to grow is the commitment of the saints or members. While many attend church, only a small portion of members are committed to serve God and the church they attend. This lack of commitment, directly and adversely affects the growth of the church. Things simply cannot be done effectively, when few are doing the work of many.

Christians must be made to understand that they are called to commit themselves to the work of Jesus Christ, and not remain on the sidelines. Jesus commanded all who would call themselves Christians to, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2011

the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:19 (KJV) The church member has a calling to serve. It is not an option. This call to commitment will be difficult to do without love, yet Jesus gave another commandment in John 13:34; the church member is to commit themselves in love to one another; in the same manner in which He has loved them. Unless the membership exhibits love towards each other in the way in which they have been commanded by Jesus, they will not work in love or serve in love. Petty issues will override the members’ commitment, resulting in a negative effect upon the growth of the church. This is extremely important because much of the work that the church is trying to do, is being held hostage by egos, out of control tempers, jealously, envy, gossip, self importance, and pride. All of which, grieves the Holy Spirit who dwells within the believer. This grieving of the Spirit, results in undesirable behaviors of believers, causing others to have no desire to serve with them. When this occurs, a phenomenon known as negative witness comes into play and growth of any respective temple of God is thwarted.

This commitment of the saints carries with it a responsibility to be faithful and obedient to God’s Word. Knowing that Satan is looking for those church members who are not committed in their faith, he seeks to hinder and destroy them through their failure to obey God’s Word.

Church members must be consistently aware that Satan is not pleased with those who would serve God; Satan will challenge them in every aspect of their weaknesses.

Believers must strive diligently to develop a single mind to have peace against the wiles of the enemy (Isaiah 26:3).

It is only through life’s tests that faith is developed and exercised. In having a single mind the believer’s focus is on spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ, no matter what.

The fourth and last activity, which if not adhered to by church members, also will lead to a harmful effect upon church growth. That is, the members’ involvement in the exercising of their spiritual gifts. As stated previously, Jesus gave spiritual gifts to the believer. Spiritual gifts are the supernatural ability imputed to every believer, to accomplish the work that He preordained them to do. Some have been given several of these supernatural gifts; however, every person who has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior has been given at least one of these spiritual gifts.

It is imperative that the believer be instructed in sound doctrine of spiritual gifts, because there are all kinds of doctrines pertaining to spiritual gifts and their use.

Coupled with these varied doctrines are different interpretations of these gifts. If not properly understood a believer (and in some instances leaders) can mis-use these gifts, as well as not have a thorough understanding of whether 76 OIKONOMIA MAGAZINE

A number of members in the church attempt to serve in areas of ministry for which they are not gifted, and as a result, ministries fail to reach their maximum potential for impact. Again, it is not the acceptance of what God has bestowed upon the believer, rather what that believer desires. This is usually prompted by the believer’s desire for recognition, or self fulfillment. The teaching of sound doctrine about spiritual gifts is a must to keep self in check.

There must be personal holiness exhibited from and on behalf of the believer. The church member must have established a personal relationship with the Lord. This personal holiness will be reflected in their spiritual walk. This type of member is keenly aware of the mandate of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and is determined to reflect that awareness in their love for the brethren.

These qualities and characteristics are present when, and wherever that Christian may be found. They are cognizant of their obligation to God, and it is evident by their evangelism, prophetic education, commitment to the Saints, and exercise of their spiritual gifts. It is these kinds of members who are keeping the church afloat. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that examination be made of these four crucial activities by the membership which has such a profound effect upon the success of the ministry. Without membership involvement in these activities, the church will continue to be unfavorably affected.

Before we can understand whom and how we are serving in the development of Kingdom youth, and whether or not we are effectively ministering to them, we must first determine whether we have a youth group or if we are developing a youth ministry. We need to clearly understand what the difference is between a group and a ministry. A ministry is a full service department in the church where those whom the ministry serves can come and get their needs met. A group on the other hand is normally smaller and has less of a holistic approach. In many groups there is less expected and therefore less done and developed. Let me stress here that as I talk about the difference between a group and a ministry, my focus is less on the names given to the entities and more on the mindset and functioning.

What is the difference between a youth group and a youth ministry? The answer is in the words themselves.

On the surface it may seem like they are just words and they do not give or shed light on the function of the entity.

Therefore it is easy to believe improperly that a youth group is the same as a youth ministry. I believe that it is very important to be clear in the naming process. The words you use to describe an entity are often times as important if not more important than the entity you are describing. Business owners spend a lot of time or invest a lot of money in marketing research coming up with just the right name for their business. This is because the name has to embody the feel and focus of the business or organization. The name should indicate what we will experience when we see the name or logo of that business (at least in theory). We know, for instance that Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) means 11 herbs and spices on fried chicken, Wal-Mart means falling prices and the yellow happy face, Target is the red bulls eye, Nike encourages us to just do it, and the list goes on.

Even in the Bible, names were very important.

Names signified where people lived, what the places of worship and remembrance were, and even the names of people were chosen for AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2011

their specific meaning. The same level of thought and prayerful consideration should be taken when trying to develop your youth ministry. Is it designed to minister, serve, evangelize and grow disciples? Is it designed to be more focused on the “seeker” - the student who is looking for Christ? Or is it just more of a club held in the church building? I have seen many of these “club” settings, and while they are great outreach tools, they do not provide a place for students to grow in Christ. It is all about fun and music. Either way you look at it, the name of the youth ministry that God has given you is more than just a name, it has a function. If God

has blessed you with the opportunity to start or lead a youth ministry, you must be able to define its purpose, role and mission. Is it a group or is it a ministry?

(Coming in the next few pages I have a chart to show some of the main differences between a youth group and a youth ministry).

A great way to determine if you are building a youth group or developing a youth ministry is to measure it against its role in following the command or commission given by Jesus in the gospels. That commission is: to make disciples of all nations, to baptize them, to teach them, to preach the good news to

them, and to be with them as He is with us (Matthew 28: 19-20; Mark 16:15-16 NAS). The bottom line is that ministry is not about your great ideas, your great experience, your great graphics and your great music. Ministry is about God and allowing God’s ministering work to be done in the lives of those who are a part of the ministry.

The word “Ministry” is used several times in the Bible; the Greek word is “diakonia”. Diakonia means service. It is also used in the Bible to mean missions, preparations, support, and relief.

This word comes from the Greek word “diakonoj” (Diakonos) which means servant or minister. It is also used in some instances in the Bible to mean deacon. Why is this important? If ministry means to serve or prepare or support, then it already changes the focus for what a youth entity is supposed to be and do. It helps differentiate a ministry from a group. If the name for someone who provides or leads the ministry is translated as servant, minister, or deacon then the context and function of what they do also changes; thereby there is a deeper meaning and calling attached to their role. This is very important when it comes to youth ministry. I have seen and heard of far too many people who are in youth ministry but are just doing it to past the time until they get their “big” break into adult ministry or something else that they 80 OIKONOMIA MAGAZINE

think is more important. Youth ministry like any other ministry should be developed, nurtured and administrated with a deep sense of calling and importance to the work – serving young lives.

Ministry as I believe God intended, as well as what can be gathered from the Greek definitions, means a service or job. A group just meets perhaps because the adults are meeting and something needed to be done with the children. The youth ministry is not a babysitting service nor is it a day care.

I hope getting that off my chest helps others who have also wanted to scream it out loud. The youth ministry is a service that purposely listens to the needs of those who participate, identifies challenge areas individually and as a body, provides a Christ-like atmosphere for sincere communication, dialogue and advice and then offers the opportunity for worship (not just a part in service but how the young people live). The youth ministry is not just a worship service but a meaningful place where young people are impacted for the better and that impact sustains even when they leave. Make no mistake, worship services for students are meaningful, but we must move beyond the idea that the ministry starts and ends with an actual youth worship experience (and that includes the youth explosion). Worship is a part of the service but not the service in total.

This is similar to when your vehicle, be it a car, motorcycle, bike or whatever you use needs to be serviced. There are trained people (servants) who work on it. Once you leave you are able to go further because your vehicle has been properly serviced. Proper service comes from doing business with a quality repair shop; similarly, a proper youth service experience will come from a quality ministry. When it comes to quality service it is really important in life, as well as in ministry, that what is done is done with a sense of excellence. You cannot just do ministry any kind of way or haphazardly. You risk the chance of hurting people and their image of what church is and should be.

I am disheartened with the amount of conversations I have had with people who have had bad church experiences; and because of those experiences they are unwilling to allow church back into their lives. The service we present as God’s servants is critical. We are the legs, feet, and arms of Christ, doing His work and His will; let’s do it with excellence and quality in all ministry areas and definitely in youth ministry.

T he Sound of the Holy Spirit in a Foreign Land Called – and I Answered My name is Janice Robertson Lewis. I was born and raised in a rural very country home in Magnolia, MS. My family still consists of my parents who are devout Christians and married for 65 years and 10 siblings. My parents still reside in the home eight of us were born in.

I am a licensed and ordained Minister living and serving as a fulltime Missionary the last five years in Nairobi, Kenya – East Africa.

Back in 2003, while working in corporate America, I was invited on a vacation to Mombasa, Kenya. As I got off of the plane I could smell Africa. It was about 110 degrees and I could see the heat waves. I was with a friend who had been working with a group that had been doing missions work in Kenya for 10 years.

Something was different. I felt like I had come to a place where I had some belonging. I was taken into one of the poor villages where they had just gotten their first well.

As water is life, the children many orphaned and destitute, were getting clean water for the first time in their lives. They could now have clean water to drink, bathe and for their crops. One of the main things was the outbreaks of cholera were no longer there… After spending the entire day in the village and seeing poverty for the first time in person, this very day my life was changed forever!

Just a few weeks before the trip, while praying, I had asked the Lord to please show me what He wanted from my life and what my true purpose is.

In Mombasa, we traveled to a number of mission projects and I saw what poverty was to the highest degree. I began to think about the great life I had back in America (Florida), the money I had in the money for safari’s and shopping but soon went to the ATM and took money to buy some things for young girls that didn’t even have sanitary supplies but was using a leaf. The school had no pencils. The teachers would cut a pencil in half so two children could have a pencil to write with.

What was supposed to be a vacation turned into a mission. I couldn’t go and enjoy safaris when there were so many orphans that didn’t even have food to eat or a decent place to live.

So in 2006, three years after that Mombasa mission’s trip, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart telling me to walk in the purpose God had assigned for my life.

I gave up a very comfortable life in America. I sold the house actually giving away almost everything I owned. My family and friends became very concerned and thought I was losing my mind. One of my friends asked if I should maybe see a therapist because I was so young and it didn’t seem right that I would give up so much “to move to Africa with all those poor people”. For some reason it never really crossed my mind because I knew without a shadow of a doubt what the Lord had told me to do. I gave up a life out of corporate America and the American dream to live in a third world country that has the most severe cases of poverty, infectious diseases – HIV/AIDS cases, drought, malaria, and so many epidemics in the world.

As I gave up my life in America, I came to Kenya wanting to change the life of every hurting orphan and widow. God began to literally work miracles as even to this very moment.

Coming onto the mission field I was blessed to have sponsorship from a church in Ft. Lauderdale, FL that continues even today but to a limited amount as 86 OIKONOMIA MAGAZINE

not only are there tough times in Africa but also America as well. I also have been so blessed with smaller donors and individuals.

For a number of years, I have had an accountant in America who managed to the penny all monies from my account and all that has been donated. After about three years on the mission field, she told me I had very little money left in my personal bank account.

I had literally put over 90 percent of my savings into projects for the poor. The accountant was in a panic.

Even though she didn’t and still doesn’t understand why I did and do what I do; when God tells you something, just believe it. My faith and trust in God has increased insanely. I began to totally trust God as I so do at this very moment for everything I need to serve Him in Kenya and in missions. I don’t care what it looks like, feel like, I just put all my trust in God knowing that He is going to complete in me what He started. I stand strongly and totally on God’s promises.

Well, in just over five years, God has allowed me to develop projects for orphans and widows in 13 different villages, KAGUNDU, IKUTANI, BISSEL, GATUNDU, NYANZA, KAWANGHARE, MACHAKOS, KITENGALA, KOGELLO, IKUMBANI, NAIROBI, MOMBASA, KISUMU serving over 6,000 people. We have also dug eight wells that have transformed lives. God has allowed all the work projects to be done with a limited amount of money.

I thank God for my listening to the Holy Spirit and being obedient when He chose this purpose for my life. By giving up a very decent life in America, God has made my life so much greater through being a Servant.

“Do I have a Christian responsibility to vote?”

the civil process, that we belong to another kingdom and that we should not get involved in the affairs of this world.

Others believe Christians should be heavily involved in politics and culture and that we have a cultural mandate to rule this world according to God’s principles. Others come out somewhere in the middle. Let’s look at some Biblical principles that might help us answer this question.

Whatever you’re sphere of influence; you have a responsibility to use that influence for God and for good.

A. You are responsible to exert a godly influence. (Matthew 5:13-16, 6:9-10) First of all, you are responsible to exert a godly influence in this world. If you are a parent, you are responsible to raise your children in the Lord. If you are a boss, you are responsible to run your company according to Christian standards. If you are in government, you are 88 OIKONOMIA MAGAZINE

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.”

(Matthew 5:13-16) Light points the way, and salt preserves. We should live in such a way that we point others to God and preserve godliness in a culture that is contaminated by sin. We should seek for God’s will to be done in our homes and in our cities and in our nation. As Jesus instructed us to pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:9-10) So, first of all, you are responsible to exert a godly influence.

B. You are responsible to pray for your leaders. (1 Timothy 2:1-2) Secondly, you are responsible to pray for your leaders. We read in 1 Timothy 2: “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2) The Bible urges you to pray for your leaders and to be thankful for them. We are to pray for those in authority that they will make good decisions so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives, and that we may freely worship God and share the gospel with others.

C. As a voter you share the responsibility of government. (Romans 13:1-5) So, you are responsible to exert a godly influence, you are responsible to AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2011

The word “vote” comes from the Latin “votum,” meaning “will or choice.” Instead of just praying for your leaders to make good and wise choices on your behalf, you are part of the decisionmaking process, and so you are responsible to make good and wise choices on behalf of your nation. And we do that through voting.

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established

by God … Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.” (Romans 13:1-5) Of course in those days there was no such thing as voting.

People lived in monarchies and empires. Your role in government as a Christian was basically to pray for and submit to the ruling authorities. But when you live in a democracy or a republic like we do, things are different. As President Lincoln described our government in the Gettysburg Address in 1863, we are a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” (The Gettysburg Address; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; November 19, 1863) And so as a voter you share in the responsibilities of government.

But as Christians we have a responsibility to be informed on the issues and the candidates, and then to vote accordingly.

As a voter you share the responsibility of government and thus share accountability to God for what takes place in our nation.

And we do that through voting. As theologian Dr. John Frame writes: “…in some cultures (like the ancient Roman, in which the New Testament was written) there is not much that Christians can do, other than pray, to influence political structures and policies. But when they can influence them, they should. In modern democracies, all citizens are ‘lesser magistrates’ by virtue of the ballot box. Christians have an obligation to vote according to God’s standards. And, as they are gifted and called, they should influence others to vote in the same way.”

(John Frame; The Doctrine of the Christian Life, p. 617) Now that does not mean you should just vote willy-nilly or fill in the blanks on a ballot like a multiple choice quiz where you don’t know the answers. You have a responsibility to AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2011

Father, Oh Father... he said, it is me, sprawled before You; rising in Your vision, walking in Your Blessed Assurance, And Lord, Oh Precious Lord...he said, it is me ... wanting, pleading, to do only Your Will, I need not belong to any particular organization or entity to serve my family man.

If I am an excellent steward to my community then I can acknowledge that service may be buying a bag of groceries for the single parent, raking the yard of a disabled vet, keeping my eyes alert for a latch key child. I can change my stewardship in area, if I admit‌‌
