The Citadel

Basilica of Sainte-Anne-deBeaupré

Surrounded by nearly 4.6 km of walls and gates, Québec is unique as it’s the only fortified city in North America north of Mexico, home to an array of military and fortification sites. The star-shaped Québec City Citadel is the largest British-built fortress in North America and took 30 years to construct. This structure has been active since 1850 when it was first occupied by British troops and the Canadian artillery. Although this Canadian National Historic Site still functions as a military base, you can participate in a guided tour of the grounds or explore the museum containing a notable collection of military artifacts!

St. Lawrence River Gateway to the Great Lakes and the North American Heartland, the St. Lawrence River holds massive presence in Québec City and has been a part of the area’s economic landscape for over 400 years. Take in breathtaking views while riding across the water on the Québec–Lévis ferry or visit the Promenade Samuel-De Champlain to explore this natural beauty from the shoreline. You can also visit the Aquarium du Québec to discover the river as well as the aquarium’s 10,000 marine animals, which represent more than 300 species!

Located around 22 miles northeast of Québec City, this stunning religious site was built in the small town of SainteAnne-de-Beaupré in 1658; it was later rebuilt in 1920 after a fire. It is North America’s oldest pilgrimage site, with nearly one million visitors a year honoring and searching to benefit from Saint Anne’s miraculous healing powers. The basilica’s exterior is decorated in a neo-Roman style. A golden statue of Saint Anne welcomes you inside where you will find breathtaking mosaics, 240 stained-glass windows and valuable works of art. This religious site is a great place to worship and relax in the countryside of the Côte-de-Beaupré region.

Fontaine de Tourny The Fontaine de Tourny, which sits in front of Québec’s Parliament building, is considered a landmark of the city. Standing close to 7 meters tall and 4 meters wide, it has a powerful presence. A gift from Simons department stores, the fountain was inaugurated on July 3, 2007 in celebration of Québec City’s 400th anniversary; it spent over a century in France however before its inauguration. It was originally created by French sculptor Mathurin Moreau and received a gold medal at the 1855 Paris World’s Fair.
