This year’s conference brings together our area after the 100th Anniversary of the JCI Movement, in a time where JCI members are inspired to Just Act; a time when we are faced with the pressing challenges of massive youth unemployment, unprecidented migration, and economic crises and unrest in many nations.

Therefore, we need to take advantage of this opportunity to unite to discuss these challenges and develop grassroots solutions, which advance the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Let’s use this time to direct our efforts to accelerate the Peace is Possible campaign.

I believe that peace, in all spaces that we find ourselves, can serve as a foundation for human dignity, liberty and advancement. We therefore have a responsibility to mobilize individuals around the world to take a stand for peace. We can each start by unconditionally respecting fellow human beings and the environment. Together let’s make this conference an extraordinary human adventure.

Delegates arriving to Johannesburg for the conference will fly into O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). The conference is taking place in Sandton, Johannesburg which is the city of arrival for international flights, therefore there will be no need for domestic air travel except for any personal or private travels.

If delegates are interested in flying domestically, South Africa has a number of airlines flying between its major cities as well as to a variety of smaller ones. Flights can be booked online from anywhere in the world.

Explore Johannesburg Apartheid Museum Since its opening in 2001, the Apartheid Museum is dedicated to illustrating apartheid and the 20th century history of South Africa. The museum is the first of its kind as it depicts both the rise and fall of apartheid.

The museum contains a series of 22 exhibitions, which takes its visitors through the emotional journey of racial discrimination and the struggle to overcome it. The museum serves as a sign of hope and showcases how South Africa has prospered in the fight against oppression.

Constitution Hill Dating back to 1892, Constitution Hill is a human rights precinct and a world-class heritage attraction incorporating cultural, historical, artistic, educational and recreational spaces that celebrate South Africa’s ability to build a peaceful democracy. Over time, Constitution Hill has served as both a fort during war and a prison, which infamously housed Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

Today, it exhibits African Art and a museum, which includes the Mandela Cell. It is also home to the South African Constitutional Court.

Lion Park Situated on 500 acres of land, Lion Park is a wildlife conservation enclosure for lions located in the Gauteng province of South Africa. While the park is home to over 80 lions, including the rare white lion, it also showcases over twenty other African wildlife species including hyenas, cheetahs, antelopes, zebras and giraffes. The Lion Park offers stunning close-up views of the animals 360 days a year through a variety of day or night-guided safari tours and serves as both an educational and once in a lifetime opportunity.

Johannesburg Botanical Gardens The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, established in 1969, contain a beautiful mix of both indigenous and exotic fauna across 125 hectares. Its wildlife is surrounded by vast lawns, which overlook the Emmarentia Dam, a popular place to canoe or boat. Visitors also enjoy its special gardens including the Shakespeare Garden, the Rose Garden and the Herb Garden. The gardens also contain a tea pergola and two smaller dams which are home to many aquatic birds.

Cradle of Humankind Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, the Cradle of Humankind contains a vast network of limestone caves most known for its fossils that lie beneath the 47,000 hectares it occupies. The caves hold the fossilized skeletons of hominids (the hominid family includes modern-day humans and their direct ancestors). Overall, nearly 900 fossils have been recovered from at least four different hominid species in the region that date back past 3.5 million years. Visitors to the site can take guided walking tours to view several important aspects of the historic land.

Anglo Boer War Memorial The Anglo Boer War Memorial is located on the South African Museum of Military History grounds in Johannesburg. It was constructed in memory of the soldiers who served and passed with the Rand Regiments in the 1899–1902 Anglo Boer War. The structure was designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and features an ornate angel atop a dome. The pillars list the soldiers who were lost during this conflict and in 2002, the memorial was re-dedicated to recognize all men, women and children of all races and origins that lost their lives in the war.
