About Kaohsiung Situated in South Taiwan, Kaohsiung is home to 2.7 million inhabitants, and is second in size to Taipei, the capital city to the north. With its relatively constant warm weather, outdoor activities can be enjoyed practically all year round. Its coastal location gives Kaohsiung magnificent ocean and harbor views such as those from Xinguang Ferry Wharf, True Love Ferry Pier and No.13 Honorary Pier and Fishermen’s Wharf. Boats are also a big part of the city’s tourism; take a ride on the Cijin Ferry or the Love Boat on the Love River to enjoy subtropical exotic surroundings. History lovers will enjoy the Confucian, Yuanheng Buddhist and Cijin Tien Hou temples, the former British Consulate at Dagou, Cihou Fort, Syongjhen North Gate and Cihou Lighthouse among touristic sites. Since its creation in the 17th century, Kaohsiung has grown from a small trading village into the political, economic, transportation, manufacturing, refining, shipbuilding and industrial center of southern Taiwan.

Cultural Notes Located across the Taiwan Strait from China, Taiwan’s population consists mostly of Han Chinese individuals who speak three dialects of Chinese: Taiwanese, Hakka or Mandarin. Traditional Confucian values, including respect for elders, piety and worship, education and hard work, remain strong among the culture of the people. The Taiwanese value harmony and believe in working for the collective good, treating others with respect and dignity. Interactions in Taiwan are a formal process and getting it right can significantly help build your “Guanxi” or personal connections. Greetings are formal, and the oldest person in the group should always be greeted first. Handshakes are the most common form of greetings with foreigners; some Taiwanese look toward

Taiwanese food made with the freshest ingredients right in front of you! Kaohsiung’s most loved and popular night markets include the Guanhua, Liouhe, Rueifeng, Jhongsiao and Singjhong night markets. Each market has its own appeal, whether it’s the affordable prices, range of dishes offered or the friendly atmosphere that welcomes both tourists and locals alike. One of the most popular dishes in the night markets is stinky tofu. You will definitely smell it before you see it, but don’t let the smell put you off, as its surprisingly tasty flavor has converted many skeptical tourists into devoted fans. Made from a brine of fermented milk, vegetables and meat, stinky tofu comes in many forms including deep fried, spicy, soft and stinky tofu shashlik; the latter of which is popular with first-time tasters. There’s no end to the amount of amazing food that can be found in Kaohsiung, and all over Taiwan. It’s possible to spend days or even weeks just sampling all of the special foods that Taiwan has become so famous for. If you’re a foodie, you’ll instantly fall in love with this little island, and be blown away by the quality, richness and taste of the local cuisine.
