MESSAGE OF GREETINGS Dear 2018 Conference Delegates and Honored Guests, It is with great honor and excitement that I welcome you to Kagoshima, Japan, the host city of the 2018 JCI Asia-Pacific Conference! Voted Japan’s friendliest city nationwide, Kagoshima is the perfect environment for delegates to gather for a successful conference experience. The 2018 JCI Conference Organizing Committee has been tirelessly working to develop an entertaining and enlightening conference that provides JCI members with the opportunity to network, receive valuable training and share new ideas among other delegates. Through unique conference programs, influential speakers and valuable planning opportunities, delegates will be motivated to think about a new future for Asia and the Pacific region, and take part in a movement leading to united positive change in communities all around the world. While the very active Sakurajima volcano – the symbol and backdrop of Kagoshima – continues to erupt daily across the bay, conference delegates can look forward to being just as active, sharing best practices and inspiring each other to move forward boldly. We will go beyond conversations and take action since Change Begins with Me. I hope this guide helps you plan for your upcoming travels to Kagoshima and that you have a remarkable time exploring this beautiful city. If you need assistance during your stay or have any further questions, the Conference Organizing Committee, the JCI World Headquarters team and I will be available to support you in any way. Thank you for your support and I cannot wait to meet you at the 2018 Asia-Pacific Conference in sunny Kagoshima! Sincerely,

Alexander Tio 2018 JCI Executive Vice President

ABOUT

KAGOSHIMA, JAPAN

Located in the south on Japan’s Kyushu Island, Kagoshima is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture and has been nicknamed the “Naples of the Eastern world” due to its similarly mild climate, palm tree lined streets and active volcano—named Sakurajima.

Telephone Japanese telephone numbers consist of an area code plus the telephone number. It is unnecessary to dial the area code when making a call within any given area code within the country. When

best to keep cash on hand in Japan. Businesses that do take credit cards will often display the logo for the cards they accept; Visa is the most widely accepted, followed by MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club. Post offices and some convenience stores, including 7-Eleven and Japan Post Bank have international ATMs. As with any other destination, avoid withdrawing and carrying large sums of cash. Exercise the same vigilance in terms of security consciousness and discretion as you would elsewhere when using an ATM.

Tipping and Gratuity

Cultural Flair Correct and proper manners are very important in Japanese culture. It is always best to behave in a polite and respectful manner toward those whom you just meet; this should ensure that you avoid any cultural faux pas. When visiting Japanese temples — a popular attraction for tourists — photography is usually permitted on temple grounds, but is forbidden in some temples, so please keep an eye out for appropriate signs.

Tipping is not part of Japanese culture and tips are never expected for services rendered. High-end restaurants and hotels will usually add a 10% service fee to the bill.

Electricity In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 volts and the standard frequency is 50/60 Hz. The power sockets that are used are Type A using two, non-polarized pins, and without a ground prong. Delegates planning to bring electronic devices should invest in adaptors to ensure compatibility with local power supply.

Shiroyama Park Shiroyama Park, overlooking downtown Kagoshima, extends over Mount Shiroyama. With an elevation of 107 meters, the mountain formerly served as the site of a castle fortification, which led to its name; Shiroyama literally means “castle mountain” in Japanese. The park is most famous for its Shiroyama Observatory with spectacular views over downtown Kagoshima, Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima. Impressive views can also be enjoyed from the Satsuma no Yu outdoor hot spring bath at the nearby Shiroyama Hotel Kagoshima.

Southern Satsuma Peninsula Following the busy conference, retreat to the southern part of the Satsuma Peninsula, an hour’s drive south of downtown Kagoshima City, making up the southwestern section of the Kagoshima Prefecture. Named after the former Satsuma feudal domain, the area offers a mixture of hot springs, subtropical natural attractions and cultural sites. Visit Chiran Samurai District to explore houses and gardens dating back about 250 years, explore Flower Park Kagoshima which is made up of half a million plants or relax in Ibusuki with a traditional Japanese hot spring or world-famous hot sand bath.
