Discovering Needs and Delivering Results The first JCI Active Citizen FrameWorkshop was held yesterday and provided an exciting way for delegates to brainstorm new projects. Focusing on the first stage of community development, health and wellness, delegates gathered in the Sky Lounge for some interactive fun using the JCI Active Citizen Framework. Following an ice breaker challenging the participants to think about their needs and how to help each other, the delegates were ready to start learning. Past JCI President Lars Hajslund started with a lively introduction, explaining the workshops’ objectives and motivating participants toward solving community problems with the JCI Active Citizen Framework. Using the road map for creating positive change, delegates discovered ways to address health and wellness through concrete examples and hands-on activities. Since healthy people are fundamental to building a successful society, it is vital that JCI members take action and provide communities a strong base for future development. Special guest speaker Chris Helfrich, Director of the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, elaborated on this point by discussing the effects of malaria on a community. Keeping poor countries in poverty, malaria costs Africa about US $12 billion in lost productivity and consumes 40% of the continent’s public health resources. This is why protecting citizens from malaria is such an important part of creating positive change. After his presentation, participants split up into groups by Area and started to brainstorm a health problem in their own community. Filling out a series of worksheets, members discussed methods of community engagement and how each way would add value to projects. From conducting surveys to hosting a town hall meeting, delegates decided which method was the most beneficial. After creative thinking and constructive conversation, each group presented their project focused on their needs analysis process. The presentations were very informative and the groups showed a strong grasp of the concept, sharing unique, applicable ideas. Following the presentations, attendees watched a video highlighting local JCI projects from Uruguay, Paraguay and Suriname. Seeing these successful projects inspired the participants to take their ideas back to their own communities. With the tools to find the most pressing needs and challenges at home, delegates will return on Wednesday to learn more about taking action to keep the positive change alive, both locally and around the world.
